Introduction

What is FIRST® Tech Challenge?

FIRST Tech Challenge is a student-centered activity that focuses on giving students a unique and stimulating experience. Each year, teams participate in a new Game that requires them to design, build, test, and program autonomous and driver-operated robots that must perform a series of tasks.

The playing field for the Game consists of the FIRST Tech Challenge game pieces set up on a foam-mat surface, surrounded by a metal and polycarbonate Field frame. Each Tournament features Alliances, which are comprised of two teams, competing against one another on the playing field. teams work to overcome obstacles and meet challenges, while learning from, and interacting with their peers and adult Mentors. Students develop a greater appreciation of science and technology and how they might use that knowledge to impact the world around them in a positive manner. They also cultivate life skills such as:

Planning, brainstorming, and creative problem-solving.

Research and technical skills.

Collaboration and teamwork.

Appreciation of differences and respect for the ideas and contributions of others.

FIRST Tech Challenge Core Values Volunteers are integral to the FIRST community. FIRST Tech Challenge relies on Volunteers to run the program at many levels, from managing a region to Mentoring an individual team. Our Affiliate Partners coordinate the program in each region or state. These Affiliate Partners fundraise, run Tournaments, hold workshops and demonstrations, market FIRST Tech Challenge locally, handle public relations, and recruit Volunteers and teams. They are a tremendous resource for Mentors and FIRST would not exist without them.

Gracious Professionalism® - “Doing your best work while treating others with respect and kindess - It’s what makes FIRST, first.”

Gracious Professionalism®

FIRST uses this term to describe our programs’ intent. This is one of the most important concepts that can be taught to a young person who is learning to get along in the work world. At FIRST, team members help other team members, but they also help other teams.

Gracious Professionalism® is not clearly defined for a reason. It can and should mean different things to everyone.

Some possible meanings of Gracious Professionalism® include:

Gracious attitudes and behaviors are win-win.

Gracious folks respect others and let that respect show in their actions.

Professionals possess special knowledge and are trusted by society to use that knowledge responsibly.

Gracious Professionals make a valued contribution in a manner pleasing to others and to themselves.

In the context of FIRST, this means that all teams and participants should:

Learn to be strong competitors, but also treat one another with respect and kindness in the process.

Avoid leaving anyone feeling as if they are excluded or unappreciated.

Knowledge, pride and empathy should be comfortably and genuinely blended.

In the end, Gracious Professionalism® is part of pursuing a meaningful life. When professionals use knowledge in a gracious manner and individuals act with integrity and sensitivity, everyone wins, and society benefits.

Gracious Professionalism® for Volunteers It is a good idea to spend time going over this concept with Volunteers. Provide Volunteers with real-life examples of Gracious Professionalism in practice before, during, and after the event and recognize great Gracious Professionalism when you see it in action!

Youth Protection Program

The purpose of the FIRST® Youth Protection Program (FIRST YPP) is to provide Coaches, Mentors, Volunteers, employees, others working in FIRST programs, team members, parents, and guardians of team members with information, guidelines, and procedures to create safe environments for everyone participating in FIRST programs.

The FIRST YPP sets minimum standards recommended for all FIRST activities. Adults working in FIRST programs must be knowledgeable of the standards set by the FIRST YPP, as well as those set by the school or organization hosting their team.

Youth Protection Expectations and Guidelines Coaches and Mentors are expected to read and follow elements in the FIRST Youth Protection Program guide that are labeled as required are mandatory in the United States and Canada, and may not be waived without the approval of the FIRST Youth Protection Department.

FIRST recommends that the standards set forth in the FIRST Youth Protection Program guide be applied outside of the United States and Canada to the extent possible. At a minimum, local regulations regarding youth protection must be complied with.

What is the FIRST® Tech Challenge Building Teams that Build Robots?

There is more than just camaraderie on FIRST Tech Challenge Teams. Many teams become extended families, with strong, lasting relationships. Students and adults absorb knowledge from each other and grow through a teambuilding and learning process from which everyone benefits. Read this FIRST Tech Challenge blog post about The Importance of Teamwork.

FIRST Tech Challenge teams and their members come from a variety of backgrounds. New teams should not expect to be like every other team, and experienced teams should not expect to be the same from year to year. Each team will have a different set of skills, experience, and ways of doing things. Each member of the team impacts the dynamic and capabilities of the team, so each time a new member joins, the team dynamic will change a little. Take time to get to know each other and find an approach and style that suits the team and its goals.

Teams are encouraged to develop and promote team identity. It helps to unite the team and develop a sense of belonging and group pride. It is also a great way to help Judges, announcers, and audiences to recognize a particular team at a competition. It can also help teams create a “buzz” about what they are doing in their own communities. The goal of this document to help facilitate the growth and formation of these FIRST Tech Challenge teams.

that STEM subjects and problem-solving are not only fun and rewarding, but are proven paths to successful careers and a bright future for us all;

Why Team Building?

Team building is essential in bringing together these student members. When organizing a team, consider team size, diversity, age and skill level, as well as time commitment and scheduling. Remember, teams grow and change as student interests and abilities develop, and as they move through the educational system. Be prepared for roles and responsibilities to shift throughout and between seasons. What a team member was interested in last year might change as they grow confident and look to explore new opportunities. The key is fostering an inclusive learning environment that best allows students to grow and explore, and team building helps do just that.

Teams can be formed in any environment and need not come solely from a school. Organizations such as 4-H Clubs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church youth organizations, home school communities, or a group of interested students are excellent starting points to form FIRST Tech Challenge teams.

Teambuilding is an important skillset to help students be successful in the “real world”.

Students will learn from each other as well as from Mentors and Coaches.

When people are comfortable, they are more willing to take risks and can handle failure better.

Students will develop the ability to network and make connections with others.

A better understanding and appreciation for others is critical in the global world we live in.

Sharing ideas leads to more ideas and greater innovation.

Students will build life-long friendships that brings meaning and value to the work they are doing together.

Tips to remember when creating a Team.

Together Build Relationships. Relationship building is a skill that requires practice like everything in our FIRST Tech Challenge community - from presentation giving, to programming or even soldering, relationship building only improves when you use it. Some examples of relationship building include:

Create Team identity o Motto/cheer o Logo(s) o T-shirts/costumes

Rituals and patterns o Team check-ins o Annual event(s) o Regular social meeting (not just about building

robots!)

Have Fun! o Teambuilding activities: get students to

intermingle and be silly together

Everyone Diversity and Inclusion. Each team consist of individuals who bring a unique point of view of the team and the team’s journey. Celebrating these differences and finding ways to include each team member’s voice is key in creating a team whose team members feel invested. Remember to:

Have a process to ensure equality within the group.

Celebrate all skills and abilities.

Emphasize respect for each other and encourage diversity.

Ensure each person has an equal say in decisions.

Gently curb students with dominant personalities.

Encourage students with softer personalities.

Recruit new members (as long as the team size stays manageable).

Achieves Pushing the boundaries. Being a part of team is being a part of a community that has a common goal. Every member should not only have a role (Team Captain, Marketing Lead, Drive Team, Mechanical Lead, etc.), but should also be encouraged to take on or try out new roles. Consider an apprenticeship system, where the experienced members teach new or interested members the skills of their role. Another option is rotating leads, allowing every member to take on leadership roles annually, bi-annually, or on another method of rotation. Remember:

Every member has a role;

Each role depends on the others; and

Students are encouraged to take on new roles.

Everyone contributes to the Engineering Notebook.

There are opportunities for everyone to shine and be recognized.

More Setting goals and moving forward.

Set team goals both for the group and for the annual competition(s).

Troubleshoot problems right away, but work with the students to solve the issue.

Provide feedback that is positive and constructive.

Gradually release responsibility of the team over to the team.

Have team meetings to discuss the team’s progress and comfort level.

Reach out and give back to the Community and other teams.

Building FIRST Tech Challenge Teams

Start at the first meeting – even before you have the materials. Get the group engaged in an activity (nonrobot-building!).

FIRST teams are MORE THAN ROBOTSSM. Even before receiving all your build materials or the release of the game materials, your team can begin culturing an open, inclusive, and creative environment. Make sure to consider the make-up of your team: the age, diversity, able body, and needs of your team. Are they a completely new group? Do you

Participate. Role modeling is the best way to get the students to participate or to see the value of the activity.

Incorporate robot-building and non-robot-building activities into your group’s routine.

Students learn in a variety of ways, so vary teambuilding activities, too. Have some that are physical, intellectual, creative, etc.

Incorporate student interests. If you have a student who is passionate about soccer, find a way to get the Team to be engaged in soccer for at least one day. Or baking. Or music. Or whatever. Make it about the students, all the students, and not the adults.

Observe who is a natural leader and who is more reserved. As the year progresses, restrict the leaders from talking (or select the one/few person(s) who get to talk) as part of the rules of teambuilding activities – it forces new leaders to develop and for the team to rely on someone they hadn’t before.

As time passes and the team grows close, release responsibility for teambuilding to the team. Have students select and plan teambuilding activities, and have team meetings to address conflicts (as appropriate).

Create space for serious stuff. Adolescence is a turbulent time rife with emotions. Without feeling that you have to be counselors, you can create a team that helps each other through tough times by listening and supporting. Try a weekly/monthly check-in where everyone shares something going great and something they are struggling with. It can be as big or small as the student is comfortable with, but giving them the space to share is what’s important. Maintain an appropriate level of confidentiality.

Role model. Share, play, talk about your interests, fail, etc, but be sure your voice doesn’t dominate. Students naturally look to the adult, so you will have to discourage that by letting there be silence until someone speaks up or by encouraging the students to take charge.

Activities to Create Teams

Any activity that ends in laughter will build a team and bring them closer together, especially if the adults involved participate!

If you need something to fill time, the group is lacking energy, or divisions are being made amongst the group, then try Tag; Charades; Red Rover; Dodgeball; Hangman; Hopscotch; Pictionary; Red-Light, Green-Light; Mother, May I? and many more – you don’t need a fancy activity, and often the fun games kids played when they were younger they still enjoy (even if they complain, deep down they are really having fun).

For new teams, or teams with new members, try these activities (a quick internet search for these types of activities will yield many options to select from):

Name Games – these are best suited for brand new teams or if there are new team members. These are fun activities to help everyone learn each other’s names. You can have a few prepared ahead of time or ask students to suggest ones they know. Mix up the group and keep moving the students around whenever possible so they come into contact with different kids.

Ice breakers – these are also for new teams or if there are a lot of new team members. This is an activity designed to get people sharing a little bit about themselves so they can connect with the other kids.

Problem-solving – Use these throughout the year to build and maintain your team. Getting the students to work together to solve a small problem will help them learn to work together and trust each other. You can start these out being completely unrelated to robot-building, and then as everyone develops the skillset, get them closer to STEM-related problems. Start with simple problems – Sudoku, Tic Tac Toe, or Rebus Puzzles.

Building a team takes time and involves personal risk. To help develop a close team, start by doing “low risk” activities together, then add a dimension of risk once the team is comfortable with “medium risk” activities. For teams that are very comfortable and/or have been together for a while, take the relationships to the next level with “high risk” activities that rely on and help deepen trust.

Low Risk– these are the Name Game and Ice Breaker – style activities. Even a rousing game of “Mother, May I” is low risk in that it asks little of the students physically or emotionally.

Medium Risk– These are activities that involve students getting closer personally and emotionally. They can include Tag or “I Love People” or “The Human Knot.” They might also include sharing more personal details, including fears.

High Risk –These activities are not for new teams, as they generally require a higher level of vulnerability on the part of each member. Activities could include trust falls or rock climbing and sharing might include difficult past experiences.

Coaching Tips

Coaches and Mentors are a team’s greatest resources. Coaches and Mentors should plan to:

Work together and share the workload and spotlight.

Get to know each member of the Team as a person and identify the strengths they bring to the Team.

Support and encourage Team members to try new skills and tasks.

Ask open-ended or leading questions. Try these: o What’s your plan? o What’s another way to achieve this goal? o How can _____ help? o Would you like to try _____? o What have we learned?

The FIRST Tech Challenge Mentor Manual is a great resource to help a new or returning Coach/Mentor. It includes sections on registering a team, funding a team, recruiting for a team, and so much more. It serves as a comprehensive resource to help teams from their Rookie year and beyond.
