A POEM ABOUT MY FRIENDSHIPTRUE FRIENDS

© EMILY

Best friends stick together till the end,

They are like a straight line that will not bend.

They trust each other forever,No matter if you're apart you are

together.

They can be your hero and save the day,

They will never leave your side they are here to stay.

They help you up when you fall,Your true friends are best of all.

WHO IS A TRUE FRIEND?

A TRUE FRIEND is someone who……

Accepts you for who you are………………………….TRUE or FALSE

Dares you to do things that might get you in trouble……………TRUE or FALSE

Cares about how you feel…………………………………TRUE or FALSE

Calls only when he or she needs something………..TRUE or FALSE

Shows you respect……………….TRUE or FALSE

WHAT IS…. RESPECT ?

Treating the other person the way that you would like to be treated.

How can we show respect to others?

• Don’t say anything that you don’t want said to you.

• No Teasing

• No Gossiping behind someone’s back (they always find out).

• Be open to others ideas

• Don’t be critical (No one’s ideas are dumb).

TRUST AND RESPECT IN TEAM-BUILDING

Trust and Respect are important components of a friendship and an effective working environment. It is hard to have respect for one

another if you first do not have trust in one another.

HOW CAN YOU BUILD TRUST?

Get to know people as individuals

Find something in common

Communication – Speaking and LISTENING are important!

It is the way we learn about others; how we are different and how we are the same!

TEAM-BUILDING

YOUR TEAM IS LIKE A FAMILY!!!

Everyone has a unique skill to bring to the family

COMMUNICATION IS KEY!!

WORKING TOGETHER

• Find out what is important to one another.

• In Team-Building: Someone might be good at doing research. Someone else might be good at creating PowerPoints. Someone else might like to do the typing of the report. Someone else might like to be the spokesperson who

presents the findings.

WHAT DO WE DO IF CONFLICT HAPPENS??(Whether it is in a friendship, with a family member, or a member of

your team).

I-STATEMENTS…..

Start by identifying your feelings- mad, sad, frustrated, etc.

I feel …

State the reason you feel this way or what happened that led you to those feelings.

When …

Try to identify the reason the person’s action led to those feelings for you.

Because…

Let the person know what you want instead.

I would like…

EXAMPLES

I feel frustrated when you borrow my IPOD without asking because I feel disrespected. I would like you to ask next

time.

I feel mad when you make fun of me, even if it is only teasing, because you are supposed to be my friend. I would like if

you would treat me with respect.

I feel sad when you say that my answers are dumb because it was only a suggestion. I would like if you would be open to all suggestions and we can pick the best ones as a group.

SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT WHEN MAKING FRIENDS AND BUILDING A TEAM

• Invite someone new into your group…….whether it be at lunch or classroom. Is there someone at your lunch table that you don’t normally talk to? Invite them into the conversation….Ask them what kinds of things they like to do after school; Ask them where they went to school previously; or What teachers do they have?

• Ask if you can join a group. I know that it is difficult, but sometimes it works, and if not, you can think…at least you tried; and give yourself a pat on the back.

• Complement one another: I like your shirt; Those are cute shoes; “Good answer!!”…., I like your idea…..

• Be a good listener: Try to show genuine interest in what they are saying, in what they like to do, ASK QUESTIONS!! Everyone appreciates having someone interested in their thoughts and what they value.

• Get involved in Activities (Activity Fair Flyer). This is a good way to get to know people with similar interests.

• BE YOURSELF!!!! Genuine Friends Will Like You For Who You Are!!!!

• Good Friendships Take Time!!! If you don’t succeed on the first attempt – just keep trying.

PRACTICE

Find a Partner next to you, preferably someone you don’t know very well.

Take a minute to find something that you have in common with them….Ask what they like to do after school, what hobbies they like, favorite food, who’s their favorite teacher……

Practice an “I – Statement” (Worksheet)

Example: You saw your friends walking to Seven-Eleven and they did not ask you to come.

You’re in a group activity and one of your teammates said that your idea was dumb.
