Welcome to Berkshire Theatre Group! We are so glad you are with us, enjoying

this performance at one of our multiple stages. We aim to bring you the best in world-class theater and entertainment, alongside community-based programs and life-enriching educational programs for the youth of Berkshire County.

BTG and the performing arts and educational programs we offer contribute greatly to the rich cultural environment of the Berkshires and help to foster a community where we love to live, work, play, and visit. Our work also contributes to economic development and the success of our future generations, but we cannot do this alone. We need your help!

Your support is crucial to our ability to continue to bring you the productions you have come to expect and appreciate. We thank you for attending our shows, donating to our organization,

and supporting our educational programs, which engage 17,000 students a year. Ticket sales only cover about half the cost of our performances and programs, so we depend heavily upon your generous contributions.

This year we are thrilled to announce the new endowment challenge from the Feigenbaum Foundation to help secure the future of BTG. This $5 million pledge over the next 10 years is designed to inspire others to join in and support the work of BTG. Please consider supporting our annual programing or endowment campaign with a gift.

Most of all, thank you for coming, and please, enjoy the show!

We invite you to join us on our artistic journey. Berkshire Theatre Group’s home is

a center for theatre, education, exploration and celebration! We treasure our relationship with our community and understand our responsibility to open our doors wide so that everyone may enjoy our historic homes. We do not define the scope of our artistic work narrowly, but rather we seek to present all kinds of experiences for you on our stages. Join us for the glory of brilliant musical performances, for a play that aspires to rattle our perception of who we are, for an evening of raucous laughter, for spirited and joyous dancing, and

do join us to meet our youngest artists who are shaping the next generation of creativity.

Please visit, and visit often. Let us know your thoughts and how we can help share our work with you. Join us as members and become part of the creative center of your community. The doors are open–come on in!

With warm appreciation,

Kate MaguireArtistic Director, CEO

Berkshire Theatre Group’s mission is to support wide ranging artistic exploration and acclaimed performances in theatre, dance, music and entertainment. Berkshire Theatre Group’s celebrated five stages

reflect the history of the American theatre; they represent a priceless cultural resource for the community. Our vision is to be a center for creative work that enriches, invigorates and transforms artists and audiences.

Education programs are a fundamental component of Berkshire Theatre Group’s mission to serve our community and the next generation of artists.

Study after study concludes that children who are introduced to the arts at a young age and given a chance to participate are more successful throughout their lives. BTG is proud to provide a multitude of arts outreach opportunities for students throughout the Berkshires and beyond.

BTG PLAYS!

• Has been providing arts programs in Berkshire County schools for over 25 years.

• Includes in-school residency programs, vacation camps, after school classes, touring shows, and the annual community production.

• Currently serves over 17,000 students annually.

THE RICHIE DUPONT AWARD

The Richie duPont Award was started in memory of the talented young actor, Richie duPont, who was a part of the Berkshire Theatre Group community, where he performed in two productions on the Fitzpatrick Main Stage. To honor his memory, the fund was established in 2005 to enable children to pursue their dreams of being on stage and afford them the opportunity to attend one of the BTG PLAYS! camp sessions.

EDUCATION

PERFORMING ARTS FOR SCHOOLS

Affordable school field trips to Berkshire Theatre Group’s theatres allow students to experience diverse, educational and entertaining programs that reinforce classroom curriculum while fostering an understanding of and appreciation for the performing arts.

PERFORMING ARTS FOR SCHOOLS SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Performing Arts for Schools Program is so important to our community that donors have stepped forward to guarantee that all students, regardless of financial situation, have access to this creativity-building resource.

Ruth & Nicholas Boraski established an endowment gift,

the income from which will be used to provide scholarships for student tickets.

Linda O’Connell established a multi-year fund to annually underwrite programming.

Nancy Vale established a charitable remainder trust in the name of her late husband Michael Vale to provide scholarships for student tickets.

SUMMER PERFORMANCE TRAINING APPRENTICE PROGRAM

• Founded in 1929 and boasts past participants such as Katharine Hepburn and Al Pacino.

• Most significant is the program’s daily training, the Suzuki Method of Actor Training, complemented by master classes taught by

visiting theatre professionals with a strong emphasis on movement, vocal technique and ensemble work.

• Apprentices perform on one of our many stages, take classes each day, and assist in a variety of departments.

THE BETSEY McKEARNAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Betsey McKearnan Scholarship Fund is awarded to select apprentices entering BTG’s Training Program each summer.

OUR HISTORY

Berkshire Theatre Group’s mission is to support wide ranging artistic exploration and acclaimed performances in theatre, dance, music and entertainment. Berkshire Theatre Group’s

celebrated five stages reflect the history of the American theatre; they represent a priceless cultural resource for the community. Our vision is to be a center for creative work that enriches, invigorates and transforms artists and audiences. And this is our story…

• In 1887 Stanford White designed and built the Stockbridge Casino. By 1927 the building fell into disrepair.

• In 1903 The Colonial Theatre, designed by J.B. McElfatrick, opened its doors. The Barrymores, Sarah Bernhardt, Eubie Blake, George M. Cohan, Irene Dunne, Al Jolson, Will Rogers,

Ted Shawn, and many others performed on the Colonial stage.

• In 1928 the Stockbridge Casino was moved to its current location and the Berkshire Playhouse was founded by Walter Clark, Daniel Chester French, Dr. Austen Riggs and the New York Tribune’s theater critic Walter Prichard Eaton.

• In 1929 The Berkshire Playhouse launched a theatrical school, which boasts the likes of Jane Wyatt, Katharine Hepburn and James Cagney as its students.

• In 1934 The Colonial Theatre closed due to the depression.

• In 1937 the Colonial reopened, a new marquee, projection room and two retail stores added to the front of the building; it operated primarily as a movie theater.

• In 1951 the Colonial closed again due to the rise of TV and the decline of touring theatrical companies.

• In 1952 the Colonial was put up for auction. Lowest bidder, George Miller, wanted to

save the building rather than demolish it, and thus Miller Art Supply moved in.

• In 1964, the Berkshire Playhouse was reorganized as a non-profit organization and renamed the Berkshire Theatre Festival.

• In 1976 the Berkshire Theatre Festival’s playhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

• In 1994 Friends of the Colonial Theatre Restoration was formed by Bob Boland.

• In 1996 The Unicorn Theatre was reopened after a lengthy renovation and became BTF’s official second stage and a home for new and experimental work.

Page 58: BTG 2014 Program Book

58  | (413) 997-4444

• In 1998 The Colonial Theatre was designated a National Historic Treasure by the Save America’s Treasures Program of the National Park Service and was visited by then First Lady, Hillary Clinton.

• In 2001 The Colonial Theatre was purchased from the Miller Family and in 2004 The Colonial Theatre Association began the process of restoration.

• In 2006 the Colonial reopened after a $21 million restoration. The inaugural performance was a touring production of RENT.

• In 2010 Berkshire Theatre Festival and The Colonial Theatre merged to create Berkshire Theatre Group.

• In 2011 Berkshire Theatre Group built the outdoor Neil Ellenoff Stage, dedicated to family-friendly theatre, and opened The Garage, dedicated to local and regional music.

• In 2013 Berkshire Theatre Festival celebrated its 85th summer season and The Colonial Theatre celebrated its 110th birthday.
