METHOD OF STARTING-Starting is carried out by means of lightssimilar to Traffic Lights and the "hockey sticks" placed in front of the carwheels are merely false start detectors which operate if the car moves for-ward before the green light shows. A. J. BUTTERWORTH-Archie Butterworth made fastest time ofthe day at last years' Speed Trials, and his most recent successesthis year were at Great Auclem and Blandford. His car is ahome constructed special with a Stcyr engine and has four wheeldrive with a certain amount of Jeep ancestry.

R. D. POORE-Driving his 3.8 litre Alfa Romeo, Dennis Poore isleading for the R.A.C. Hill Climb Championship by a handsomemargin. His magnificent handling of this large car in sprints,hill climbs and races at Goodwood is most impressive.

FORREST LYCETT-This well known enthusiast of 8 litre Bentlevfame recently achieved over 134 m.p.h. in the car he is drivingto-day, when he used the same course and timing arrangementsafter the Goldie Gardner records in Belgium.

E. LLOYD JONES-Ted Lloyd Jones drives the largest enginedspecial in use to-day, being the 21 litre, 635 b.h.p. Rolls RoyceKestrel engined Triangle Special. This is its first attempt atgoing in a straight line for a kilometre and its performance willbe watched with interest.

D. PARKER-Don Parker is the most successful 500 c.c. driver whouses a car of his own making, he has been placed many times thisyear, at home and abroad, and is the present holder of the 500 c.c.record at Brighton.

K. McALPINE-Usually in first three at Brighton when driving theex Bira Maserati, this driver is also well known for his exploits insports car racing, driving a Lea Francis engined Connaught.

J. C. C. MAYERS-Jim Mayers has been a most consistent trier inpost-war sports car racing and he achieved fame recently bywinning the Motor Sport Brooklands Memorial Trophy atGoodwood driving his Lester-MiG.

AWARDS The following Trophies will be presented atthe conclusion of the Meeting.

THE CLUB TROPHY -(to be held for one year) andreplica, for the fastest time of the day made by a car; also £100cash.

THE SIMPSON LEE TROPHY-(to be held for oneyear) and replica for the second fastest nrne of the day made bya car and £SO cash.

THE WALTER EDLIN TROPHY-presented by thelate Walter Edlin, Esq., will be awarded as an annual trophy, toit member of the Brighton & Hove Motor Club driving a four,wheeled C-H who makes the fastest time of day among his Clubmembers.

THE CHATER-LEA TROPHY-for the fastest timemade by a lady driver.

THE FORREST LYCETT TROPHY-for the fastesttime of the day made by a SPOrts Car.

"The Scout" National Soap Box Derby 1950The first National Soap Box Derby was held in 1939. the finals

being run on the famous Brooklands Motor Track. The Soap-boxcars competing to-day are the winners of the semi-final heats held indifferent parts of the country. The cars. all of which are pedal drivenhave been built by the boys themselves without adult help and at aa cost not exceeding £5.

The Competition has been organised by "The Scout", the weeklypaper for Scouts, with the co-operation of the Vaux.hal.l Motor Co. Ltd., whohave most generously provided Trophies for the successful area finalists andTrophies and cash awards for the winners of the Finals. The Scout Shop haspresented Trophies for the Runners-up in the three finals.

There is a prize of £ 1 per mile per hour for the fastest speed put upthis year. This has been offered by Bullanco of South London. At presentthe holder of the record is Chitty-Bang-Bang entered by the 2nd ArnoldGroup of Boy Scouts. Scout Pindar reaching a speed of 20.6 m.p.h. at theMidlands Semi-final at Castle Bromwich on June 24th. That record may bebeaten to-day.

In addition, Vauxhall Motors have provided a Tropby to be presentedto the Group entering the BEST MECHANICALLY CONSTRUCTEDCAR. and another for the Group whose car is BEST IN APPEARANCE.Officials-Organiser and Controller-F.
