The Kiwi hero says he can now head home to New Zealand for the next points round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series, the ITM 400 in Hamilton, full of confidence, believing this year presents his best chance to repeat his Pukekohe success since his last win there in 2005. “I am very pleased with the work that’s happened this weekend, we made a lot of progress with the Castrol EDGE Commodore and I feel like I’m in very good shape heading to Hamilton – the best shape I’ve been in, in years,” Murphy said. Being a non-championship round, the Grand Prix presents a valuable opportunity to test under competition conditions without the pressure of championship points being offered, enabling teams to try new setups and, in Murphy’s case, gain experience with new cars – which is not possible at points races. A four-time winner of his ‘home’ round in New Zealand when it was previously held at Pukekohe, Murphy was quickest ‘out of the box’ during Thursday’s practice, then provisionally qualified the Castrol EDGE Commodore third before a mistake in Friday’s Top 10 Shootout placed him tenth on the grid. After finishing tenth in Friday night’s race, Murphy was handed a 10 second penalty for jumping the start which pushed him back to 20th for the following night’s race. He and Paul Morris Motorsports’ team- mate Russell Ingall moved forward in the pack but a brake issue with Ingall’s car saw him sensationally rear-end the Castrol EDGE Commodore and push it off track, Murphy recovering to finish 18th. For Sunday’s final race, Murphy wasagain pushed off the circuit in a first lapmelee and dropped to near last, but the12-time series round winner showed histrue class and stormed through the field tofinish a very good ninth at the end of the 13laps – the drive impressing many tracksideobservers.

just what we can do with it,” he said.“I wasn’t pleased with our early

race results, the first two races weredisappointing – all started by me jumpingthe start in Race 1 and receiving a penalty

– but we made a number of extremely goodchanges and got a result with car balance.

“We are coming away from Melbourne witha lot of good information and we take a lot of positives out of the weekend.

“As I said earlier, I’m feeling confidentabout Hamilton and the Castrol EDGE teamis in good shape. A good result there is agreat way to get the championship on trackfor our team.
