Gideon International is an evangelical Christian association founded in 1899 in Wisconsin. The Gideons' primary activity is distributing copies of the Bible free of charge. The association's members focus on distributing complete Bibles, New Testaments, or portions thereof. Our speaker, Greg Williams, is an avid Gideon proponent and an active Gideon with the New Bern chapter. He has travelled the world on their behalf spreading the word through the distribution of bibles, including many trips to the south Pacific, Central Africa and throughout the country of Guyana in South Amer- ica. He has had a career in education, including assistant principal of Have- lock High School, stints as Athletic Director and coach, and principal of New Bern High School. He is a member of First Baptist Church of New Bern, Sunday School teacher and an inspiration to others. Several years ago, an avid fisherman, Greg was in the Neuse River checking his nets when a rare northbound squall line swamped his small fishing boat and pushed it all day across the frosty waters of the Neuse. Greg’s waders kept the waters warmed by his body, allowing him to survive the ordeal. Rescue planes combed the wide, swell-filled waters searching for any small dot in its vast- ness. On the last search pass by the last rescue plane of the day, Greg was mi- raculously spotted and pulled from the frigid waters. That experience has changed his life forever, filling his life since then with innumerable acts of service. He told us of his many trips around the world distributing the Gideon Bibles and working with people of remote locations. The Gideons print the bible in 108 languages and distribute them in 200 different countries. They have an app with 1,500 languages and dialects.
