Are You In Your 20s or 30s? Let’s Get Together for Lent
MONDAYS DURING LENT AT 7:00 P.M. IN THE PARISH CENTER LIBRARY
Come join us on Monday evenings for Lectio Divina, (literally divine reading). Through
a process of reading, reflection, response and contemplation, we can develop a
closer relationship with God by reflecting prayerfully on His words. Through this
encounter with the living word and through our gathering for faith sharing, food and
fellowship we also develop spiritual relationships with one another.

Life and Dignity of the Human Person
CRS Rice Bowl: Week 1
Catholic Social Teaching inspires and guides how we are to live and
work in the world. In this principle, Life and Dignity of the Human Person,
Jesus Reminds us that we are all made in God’s image and likeness.
That means that every human being has a special value and a purpose.
We need to care for each other so we can be the people God calls us
to be.
This week we encounter Norma’s Story of Hope.
Read more of her story at www.crsricebowl.org/stories-of-hope/week-1
For young families in the mountains of Guatemala, raising a baby can
be hard and putting food on the table is a daily challenge. Norma
found help at a CRS-sponsored program that teaches young mothers
how to raise healthy children, grow nutritious food in small gardens and
manage a healthy diet. See page 5 for a meatless recipe from
Guatemala to include in your Lenten meal plan.
Respect Life: From Parents’ Lips
At a recent funeral Mass the celebrant,
before beginning the Our Father, asked
rhetorically how we learned this divinely instituted prayer. Answering
himself, he said: “Not from books or like sources. No, we learned it from
our parents.” His point is important for that’s how it must be with life
issues.
Our cultural elites prize abortion, physician assisted suicide, self-
determination of sexual identity, deconstruction of marriage, a myriad
other forms of radical personal autonomy and, now, even infanticide for
children born alive after a failed abortion. They do this through
legislation, judicial fiat, political action, song, dance, art, movies,
television programming, mainline press, management of social media,
classroom curricula and countless other means.
These ubiquitous currents pull at our children daily. They are
prescriptions for unhappiness and alienation from the God who made
and loves them. When our children don’t realize this, they are at high risk
of becoming, unconsciously, disciples of the secular culture.
If they are to hear and admire the counter-cultural Gospel of Jesus
Christ on life issues, expressed through his Church, it must be from their
parents’ lips. If not from there, from where?
Speaking up for life to our children during the next forty days would be a
worthy Lenten discipline.
“Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the
desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and
when they were over he was hungry.” (Gospel of Luke 4:1-2)
Here we stand, at the beginning of our own personal journey into our own personal desert.
Here we stand, as an assembly — the assembly that was called on Ash Wednesday, (Joel
2, 2-18)at the beginning of our collective journey into an encounter with Christ.
Take this moment to look over the terrain. What do you see directly in front of you, on either side, behind you?
Turn around. What is behind you? Does your path look clear ahead or is it full of obstacles? Who is walking
along with you or are you on your own, or just feel on your own?
Take this moment to take stock of your life. What baggage are you carrying? What is going to way you down
that you need to leave behind? What resources do you have inside that will sustain you?
As I’m writing I’m visualizing this scene of me standing at the beginning of a path leading out into a desert.
I’ve never been in an actual desert, but I’ve seen pictures and they frighten me. They may be beautiful in their
starkness, but it is not the beauty that I’m accustomed to having grown up in the Midwest. I look ahead and
see dry land, no shelter for protection. I’m aware of the scarcity of food and drink and I’m not sure that I want
to set out into this unknown territory.
I think of Jesus and the temptations we read about this Sunday: the temptation to rely on power to produce
his physical nourishment; the temptation of power and glory; the temptation to put the Lord to the test. I see
my own struggles in the temptations placed before Jesus.
I see my own struggle to look for nourishment in food that does not truly satisfy or nourish my body or soul. I see
my own temptation to want the power and the glory that the world offers. I see my own temptation to put the
Lord to the test when I fall into the trick of calling on God as if he were my personal magician.
I see our collective struggles as a community of believers who oftentimes forget to take the nourishment
offered to us in the Eucharist, who look to our jobs, our financial accounts, our social standing/popularity for
security; the tendency to think we somehow “deserve” for God to keep us from the dangers of the world.
We are armed with our faith as Jesus was. We are armed with the Word of God as Jesus was. We are armed
with the gifts of the Spirit as Jesus was. Will we stand firm and rely on them in our struggle?

Through A Catholic Lens: A
Film Festival for Lent Sunday, 12:15—3:00 p.m. OR
Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. to Noon
In the Parish Center
Films can tell us so much about ourselves and our
world. Watching films within the context of our
faith and in conversation with others can lead us
to challenge and strengthen our faith, to explore
what Church teaching has to say to our culture
and to our ways of life, and to open our minds,
eyes, and hearts to new ways of thinking … and
it’s fun!
Week 1: Chocolat (2000, PG13)
THIS Sunday or Wednesday, March 13
Starring: Juliet Binoche, Judi Dench,
Alfred Molina & Johnnie Depp
Director: Lasse Halström
“We can’t go around measuring our goodness by
what we don’t do, by what we deny ourselves, by
what we resist and who we exclude. I think we’ve
got to measure goodness by what we embrace,
what we create, and who we include.”
Do you agree? Disagree? This movie should start
some good conversation about morality, Church
traditions, Lenten disciplines and their purpose,
and what this season of Lent means in the life of
the Church.

RCIA UPDATE: Rite of Sending – Rite of Election
Today, Cardinal Cupich will welcome those sent by their parish together with their godparents and sponsors in
what is known as the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion. The Rite of Sending, here at St.
Mary at our 11 a.m. Mass, offers our parish community an opportunity to acknowledge the spiritual progress
the catechumens and candidates have made, to express our approval of their election or recognition, and to
send them forth to our Cardinal Archbishop with assurance of our parish’s care and support.
For those who have been baptized, they are already among the elect in Christ. These individuals, also known
as candidates, are “called to continuing conversion,” and thus their intention to be fully initiated and share in
the Eucharist is recognized. This Rite of the Call to Continuing Conversion also takes place before the Bishop.
Together with the Elect, these catechumens and candidates are thereby moved by this Rite into a period of
intense spiritual preparation.
During these coming weeks of Lent, let us pray for our catechumens, Darrell Krueger, Monique and Steven
Speight and for our candidates, Kyle Adams, Cheryl and Andy Phillips and Tricia Robison. Let us ask the Lord
for them and for ourselves, to be renewed by one another’s efforts so that together we may come to share
the joys of Easter.
Peace in Christ, Deacon Dennis
