MOBILE BROADBAND 3G

THE telecoms industry in the Gulf region is in the throes of change with mobile markets becoming more com-petitive and saturated. As a result the big players are expanding into Africa and Asia Pacific to continue growing, but there is also a need for more domestic capacity to support growth at home in both the mobile and fixed markets.

Members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which consists of

Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are feeling the heat in markets that have become more open and because pen-etration rates are well over 100 per cent.

There were 57 million mobile subscriptions in the GCC at the end of September 2009, a figure that was up 26 per cent from 45 million at the end of September 2008.

Last week, network operator Tata

Communications signed strategic partnership agreements with several of the region’s major telecoms carriers to establish a new cable that will connect the region directly to the world’s major business hubs and city centres via Tata’s global network.

The partners are Bahrain Internet Exchange, Nawras of Oman, Qatar Telecom, Mobily Saudi Arabia and Etisalat of the United Arab Emir-ates, which will each be the exclusive landing party for the TGN Gulf Cable System in their respective geography.

The cable and the relationships with the landing parties will be further developed to provide an extended port-folio of value added services for local and global enterprise customers, Tata said. Using their own cable station, each party will have access to a high speed route to the global market, and will benefit from much needed resilience and diversity to the infrastructure in each country. This capacity will enable expansion in broadband penetration, internet usage and enterprise applica-tions, the consortium said.

THE Dubai World Trade Centre opened its doors today for the 14th annual leading telecoms event for the Middle East region. With over 2,500 pre registered delegates due to attend the GSM>3G Middle East Telco World Summit, the local

telecoms market certainly looks buoyant in the face of the economic adversity that has been gripping the rest of the world for the past year or so, only hitting closer to home more recently.

The event will live up to its ta-gline “Setting the Middle East Telco Agenda” with over 800 registered operator delegates, representing 85 regional carriers. The caliber of attendees is also reflected, with 56 per cent of delegates either operator representatives, C-level executives or upper management, an increase of 15 per cent on last year’s figures.

Saudi Arabia has emerged as one of the region’s mobile powerhouses, with mobile penetration levels of 122 per cent at the end of Septem-ber, and over 35 million subscrib-ers. As a result and due to popular demand, this year’s event includes a full day in the agenda dedicated to Saudi Arabia. The Special Focus Day will take place on day two of the event and will include presentations from STC, Mobily and Zain.

Middle East standing tallAS the rest of the world struggles in the grip of the economic crisis, the Middle East has remained a bastion of growth. Even as Dubai welcomes the telecom industry’s biggest and brightest players, the dust was al-ready settling on a financial setback which shook the local market only days before.

When Dubai World, the country’s main government-backed develop-ment group announced a restructur-ing of its sizeable debt obligations, many expected a day of reckoning. But what took place was effectively a brief market panic followed by a state of calm. At the same time, con-struction on Dubai’s newest crown jewel and the world’s tallest building - the Burj Dubai - standing at more than 800 metres high, was drawing to a close.

Coincidence it may be, but work started on the Burj back in 2004 when Dubai’s confidence was at a peak and business everywhere was booming. So when the tower opens in early

January 2010, it will stand as a symbol of how not just Dubai, but also the Middle East region, has weathered the economic storm and emerged in a new age with a new, perhaps more conservative, outlook.

While the Middle East and Gulf region has benefitted from the liberalisation of markets in many states, through reduced regulations on foreign ownership and invest-ment, which has acted as an incen-tive for foreign and private sector business, it’s fair to say the effects of the economic climate are still being felt. Indeed, the opening focus of the GSM>3G Middle East Telco World Summit is on international expan-sion opportunities for Middle Eastern operators. The participants in the ple-nary session, which include Dr Saad Al Barrack, CEO of Zain and Jamal Jarwan, group chief international investments officer for Etisalat, will investigate how carriers can maxim-ise opportunities for expansion as a result of the economic crisis.

“Since the onset of the recession, investors in telecoms have become more cautious, in stark contrast to the bubble that built up in telecom-

asset prices over the previous few years,” said Matthew Reed, princi-pal analyst for the Middle East at Informa Telecoms & Media. “Egypt pulled plans to offer a second-fixed licence because of the recession, for example. And at a retail level, con-sumers appear to have become more price-conscious - though increasing price competition is a consequence of the debut of new operators in Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, as much as it is due to a change in consumer sentiment.”

Nowhere is local competition more intense than in Saudi Arabia, which is the third largest mobile market in the Middle East, with over 35 mil-lion mobile subscriptions, and the introduction of a third player, Zain, in 2008. Speaking to the Show Daily, Hany Mokhtar, executive manager, business segments, for Mobily, Saudi’s second biggest mobile operator, said: “The impact is really tough on North Africa, Egypt and Levant, yet it is mild when coming to the Gulf region,

yet in all cases, the telecommunica-tions sector is now working from a cost effective perspective rather than a sole solution or business tool, which is being reflected in most of the operators’ ads.”

2009 also saw the launch of the first two MVNOs in the Middle East, which commenced operations in Oman in the second quarter and fuelled competition further. Friendi made its debut in April, and Renna followed shortly after. Both Friendi and Renna are hosted on the net-work of Oman Mobile and have each said that they had attracted more than 50,000 subscriptions within two months of launch.

In order to combat this competitive intensity, there will be much talk at the event on how mobile operators are using Value Added Services (VAS) like music and entertainment-related content, location-based services, and social networking to derive new revenue streams from tech-savvy customers.
