A special event in Midway last Thursday brought together students from all Boundary schools for the official opening of the Gate-way Learning Circle.

First Nations artist David Seven Deers’ project was several years in the making, and finally realized during a moving ceremony conducted by numerous dignitaries and the artist himself.

Designed to be a learning destination for Boundary students, the installation, set in En-twined Trees Park, is comprised of a massive stone gateway and a highly polished black ra-ven sculpture, encircled by 20 blocks of stone, each featuring a chiselled animal motif.

School District 51’s director of learning Doug Lacey, one of the primary architects of the project, spoke of Seven Deers dedication to the Gateway, which was produced very economically, money wise, but required hun-dreds of hours on the artists part to complete.

Lacey said, “David Seven Deers was in-troduced to me well over a year ago as an aboriginal author and storyteller. He had been speaking to primary classes across the Boundary for several years. This was always done outside, in a circle, around a fire.

with “mother raven” presiding at the head of the circle.

“Over many, many conversations with David this past very busy year, I have truly come to understand the depth of his mantra, ‘everything happens for a reason.’ When our district aborigi-nal education teachers Wanda Hecht and Marilyn Hanson were visiting with David and his family at their mountain property between Greenwood and Midway, their exclamations about one of his small sculptures led to his vision for the Gateway. ‘Everything happens for a reason.’

Lacey continued, “When the Village of Mid-way Mayor Randy Kappes invited David and I to come out here to see this beautiful park as a potential home for heelah (raven), I looked around and could see Boundary Central Second-ary, Midway Elementary, the beautiful hills above us, the entwined trees, the original Midway one-room school right there.

“The winter before David and I met, I had participated in a talking circle with many com-munity aboriginal elders and heard their wish for a physical gathering place like a friendship centre or an identifiable meeting place and for me this Gateway has become a symbolic first step.”

Midway mayor Randy Kappes said the village was extremely honoured to have such an impres-sive artwork installed in its midst, and that resi-dents would derive much pleasure from it in the years to come.

Seven Deers himself spoke in length about his personal journey both as an aboriginal and an artist, and his hopes for the future in relation-ships amongst all Canadians. His installation un-doubtedly represents one huge step in the right direction.

Letters Policy

I could but laugh at Premier Christy Clark’s terrible gaff last week, as she was forced to cancel her proposed International Yoga Day shutdown of Vancouver’s Burrard Bridge due to public uproar.

Not only was her choice of location preposterous, but also the timing, with the premier’s plan effectively sub-ordinating National Aboriginal Day to Inter-national Yoga Day. Throw Father’s Day and Summer Solstice celebrations into the mix, and the premier’s plan seemed not only lack-ing foresight, but also smacked of a publicity stunt, partially aimed at sweetening the rela-tionship between the province and India.

While media pundits have marveled at the degree of public derision concerning the yoga event when compared to the lack of response to much more important matters, it appears that this seemingly minor event may prove more damag-ing to Clark’s political reputation than most of the other reasons for public outcry that appear to have fallen large-ly on deaf ears.

For example, the recent health ministry firings of eight researchers, which resulted in one of them taking their own life, seemed to go largely unnoticed by most of us, as was the government’s refusal to open a public inquiry into the matter.

There are numerous other decisions by Clark’s gov-ernment that should be publicly scrutinized, which will hopefully make the voters think long and hard in the next election. For now, though, to heck with it! Sunday is the longest day of the year and I’m taking my dad fishing!

My foster daughter, along with her three sisters, were recently court-ordered back to their mother, from whose care they were removed over two years ago. I am not going to publicly berate the judge and his decision in the matter, but simply point out that in my experience, the foster system has proven to me what has been reported on many occasions, that it is under-funded and under-staffed.

I would love to hear from other foster parents regard-

ing their own experiences with the Ministry for Children and Family Development (MCFD), so please email me if you’d like to have your say. Incidentally, this custody battle cost taxpayers at least $600,000, and that is a con-servative estimate.

On a much lighter note, the Stanley Cup was present-ed to the Chicago Blackhawks last Monday evening, the third such presentation in the last six years.

While not a “true” dynasty, the Blackhawks have accomplished an impressive feat in this era of sports parity, and in all likelihood they will again be in the mix next season. At the other end of the spectrum, can somebody tell me why such a rich, extremely well-supported franchise like the Toronto Maple Leafs sim-ply cannot get out of the quagmire in which

they have been mired for several decades, an occasional promising season notwithstanding?

The Leafs have everything going for them, at least on the surface, but what is buried beneath the old Maple Leaf Gardens that has placed a curse on the team since 1967, the last time they were Stanley Cup champions? Could it be that the ghost of one Harold Ballard haunts them? He who ran the team for decades in a fashion con-sidered dubious at best, both in the business arena, and the hockey side as well?

Something’s not right when the highest valued hockey team in the world, and one of the premium franchises in all sports, rarely fails to miss the playoffs. Canada’s team, surely, cannot be a bust much longer! Truth be told, I feel bad for the Buds; I’m not a huge hockey fan, but for some reason I always want to see them succeed.

Could be my Southern Ontario background, or per-haps I just feel for losers. Whatever it may be, next sea-son, mark my words, will be different. Mike Babcock will march the team into the playoffs, where they will lose to Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference final. Oh oh, I just heard Harold turning in his grave.

Christy’s yoga day preposterous

It was another wonderful graduation ceremony at the Midway Arena for Bound-ary Central Secondary School grads. The grad class of 2015 came onto the floor in their caps and gowns and left in their fin-est suits and dresses ready to take on the world.

For the grads this is a time to cherish and remember—a once in a lifetime experience that they will look back on with pride. It is the one of life’s biggest milestones. A cer-emony to bid farewell to youth and child-hood and hello to the “real world.”

For parents (and grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, friends and others) it’s a time to look at their son or daughter with pride as they prepare for adulthood.

This grad class has already shown themselves to be a cut above by showing their class and comportment throughout the years.

For many, the next step will be college or university as they decide what to do in the future; some will travel and see the world before embarking on schooling; some will step right into the work force.

One thing is certain, this group is pre-pared and can conquer any of the chal-lenges facing them in the future.

So much for freedom of choiceLetters to the editor

It seems like only yesterday (40-50 years ago) parents were warned that sitting too close to a television set was harmful for children; and only yesterday (60 years ago) U.S. forces, when test-ing atom bombs in the Bikini Atoll, told locals it was for the betterment of humanity (see the film Atomic Café).

In U.S. tests, troops were told to run towards the explosion for radiation was the least of their concerns. Meanwhile North Americans were ad-vised to “duck and cover.”

Three days ago I received a kindly message from FortisBC to get in touch with them—a cour-tesy call. You see, EMF-emitting smart meters are being installed in the Boundary this summer.

Again, it seems like only yesterday (20 years ago) we were being warned of electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) and their affects upon our health.

After many scientific papers and non-industry-funded studies that provide enough research to indicate smart meters are a hazard to health, sup-pliers of electricity seemingly do not wish to listen. See the “International EMF Scientist Appeal to the United Nations,” May 22, 2015 (emfscientist.org/index.php/emf-scientist-appeal ); and “Smart Me-ters: Correcting the Gross Misinformation” (mai-sonsaine.ca/sante-et-securite/electrosmog/smart-meters-correcting-gross-misinformation.html).

Of course, FortisBC will refute the information and did when I wrote them or returned their call. I was sent the FortisBC information package, stat-ing: electricity rates will be less (not true accord-

ing to some), that the analogue meters require replacement due to new Measurement Canada guidelines (also not true—according to others the analogues are fine), will provide customers with more detailed electricity use information, that the emissions (24/7) are minimal (research shows otherwise) and most importantly, will reduce the cost of operating the utility (fewer meter readers etc.).

Health effects of EMFs include sleep disorders, malfunction of the parathyroid gland, electro-hypersensitivity, biochemical changes, demen-tia, decreased memory, male infertility, immune dysfunction, childhood learning and behavioral impairments—and cancer (the World Health Or-ganization has classified EMF-producing wireless devices as possibly cancer-causing).

Like the natives of Bikini Atoll we are being held hostage. Even with protest, the corporation of FortisBC is continuing installations. Customers wishing to opt out of the “turned on” EMF bom-bardment are required to pay extra charges. Don’t get me wrong, I am really grateful for electricity. I just don’t like the idea of being bullied into a situ-ation I personally feel is not good for my health and my privacy.

My concern, as mentioned in the above re-search, is the long-term effect—the consequences for our health and well-being.

Post Script: The contractor for FortisBC was just here, to change the meter. I have refused. Ac-cording to the contractor I have no choice, but I gather I’m allowed to refuse three times, then Fortis will come and, without notice, cut off the service. So much for freedom of choice. It doesn’t seem to exist.

You’re sitting in an office across from a mortgage loans officer. It could be a bank, a credit union, or another lender. You’ve signed all the papers for your mortgage.

Now comes a question that you haven’t thought about, “Would you like to have mortgage insurance?”

“What’s that?” you ask innocently.“If you die, we’ll pay off your mortgage so your spouse or family

doesn’t have to worry about it.”You, like many others, are tempted to respond,

“Where do I sign?”But wait a minute! Think about what you’re paying for before you

sign up.The major difference between a life insurance policy and mortgage

insurance from a lender is control. With a life insurance policy, you decide who the beneficiary will be. With mortgage insurance, the financial institution is the beneficiary and gets all of the death benefit.

Your appointed beneficiary gets to choose how to spend the tax-free death benefit from your life insurance policy. They could pay down the mortgage or other debts, or choose to invest the proceeds rather than pay off a low interest mortgage. These options don’t exist when your mortgage lender controls the proceeds.

Many homeowners don’t realize that mortgage insurance is often what’s called “decreasing term insurance.” The amount you owe on your mortgage goes down as you make payments on the principal. At the same time, the death benefit goes down by the same amount. But

your mortgage insurance premiums stay the same, so you’re actually getting less and less for your money every time you make a mortgage payment.

Here’s another point worth considering. Many homeowners will change mortgage lenders during the time they’re paying off their home, especially if they can get a lower interest rate somewhere else. If you take your mortgage to another company, in most cases, you lose your mortgage insurance and have to apply again at the new company. If you have a life insurance policy to protect your mortgage, and a better rate exists at another lender, you can transfer your mortgage to that company knowing your insurance remains in force. You don’t need to re-apply, and you’re protected from the danger of losing your insurance because of a change in your health.

I recently read an article that pointed to lower premiums as being a good reason to choose mortgage lender insurance over life insurance. It said that it is much cheaper to cover your mortgage with a bank policy rather than an insurance company’s policy. This is not always the case as I see in my line of work. Depending on the policyholder’s age and the amount of coverage, individual life insurance coverage will often come in cheaper than the lenders mortgage insurance.

The final choice is up to you. Weighing your options will help you get the most out of your money and put you in control!

How can I make sure my mortgage gets paid?

Simple democracy at work

e voters in Greenwood, in accordance with the democratic processes in place, have elected the current Greenwood city council to make de-cisions. ey were not appointed.

At times they may be called upon to make very di cult decisions—and hopefully execute them in accordance with the relevant rules and regulations of the day.

I would expect the recent termination of the past CAO to be considered in this category. If they do not make these di cult and accountable decisions, they are abdicating their responsibili-ties.

I personally like our current mayor Ed Smith. I nd him to be easily approachable and avail-able, and think he is capable of being capable. I believe he’s a good person.

Without going into any detail regarding the circulating petition, I think the petitioners are doing what they think and understand they have to do in serving both their agenda and those of the local folks that are supporting what they are attempting to accomplish.

I understand they have close to 200 supporters at the time of this writing. is would con rm to me that they have assembled their facts accurate-ly, that they have been thorough in their research and are con dent in what they are doing.

In due course we will all see how this situation is resolved, as it inevitably will be. My hope is that it can be resolved reasonably amicably and then put to rest.

is is simply democracy at work. We as Ca-nadians have to appreciate that we have this right. Remember Canada Day is July 1.

Alex Larson,Greenwood

Editor, The Times:

As part of Founder’s Day weekend, the inaugural Greenwood Art and Collectibles Show will bring together artists and cra s-people from around the region in a “show and sell” event that organizers hope will become an annual one.

Principle organizer Donna Guenther would like to see the show become as icon-ic as those held in Rock Creek and Castle-gar, both of which are very well attended and pro table for the participants. Guenther outlines the goal of the show as presenting arts and cra s that are unique and, perhaps, a bit more upscale than those found at similar exhibitions.

Featured will be metal artwork, fountains,

butter y displays, antiques and a selection of “hidden treasures.”

Display tables are 10’x10’ and are $15 each. e show takes place on Sunday July 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the McArthur Centre park-ing lot, and those interested in securing a table should c ontact Guenther at 250-445-6325.

Art and collectibles show slated

Collector pieces like these carnival glasses from the 1940’s (already sold) are the types of items that will be featured in the show.

Firefighters receive long-service awardsLong Service Awards presented

Mayor Randy Kappes pre-sented long service awards to two firefighters at the com-mencement of the council meeting. Fire Chief Walter Osellame re-ceived his 25-year long service medallion and his 35-year long-service bar, while Deputy Chief Keith Martin received his 25-year long service medallion.

“British Columbia Long Service Med-als are awarded by the provincial govern-

ment to persons who have completed at least 25 years of paid or volunteer fire service in British Columbia. This is to recognize the dedication and selflessness with which

these individuals have served their com-munity and this province in the protection of life and property.”Ministry of Transportation Update

Dennis Kurylowich, manager of district operations for the Ministry of Transporta-

tion and Infrastructure, provided a detailed update on proposed im-

provements in accident scene safety and procedures, suggesting that a unified dis-patch system should be put in place to ensure all facets of scene management are addressed quickly and efficiently.

He also pointed out that motorists are continuing to ignore temporary speed lim-it signs and asks the public to be more cog-nizant of the importance of slowing down, especially in bad weather.Request for temporary residence

Prospective residents Dorrie Rotondo and Joe Yanisiw requested council’s per-mission to live in their motorhome on

their empty lot during the construction of their house. They stated they would live only occasionally on the property during 2015 to do site preparation work, and that they hoped to have preparation completed by the end of this year.

Council was initially hesitant to grant them permission to proceed with their plans, citing two previous situations in which construction was not completed in a timely fashion and motorhomes re-mained on the lots much longer than promised, but finally agreed to further consider the application.

School District 51 sets 2015-16 budgetSchool District 51 trustees were able

to come up with a budget for 2015-16 after consulting with staff from all dis-trict schools. Board chair Teresa Rezan-soff said that the process to reach the budget went very well.

The budget for next year was ap-proved at the regular board meeting on June 9 at the board office in Grand Forks.

“It comes into effect on July 1,” said Rezansoff. “It was a great budget process this year. We did something a bit differ-ent. We always do consultations, that’s par for the course. These year we went out with three targeted questions.”

Rezansoff said the board linked the budget process to the board’s goals with their achievement contact and educa-tional directions.

“We are linking the learning needs of the students to the direction we take in the school district and how the deci-sions we make in the budget supports all of that—so there’s clear alignment,” she said. “It’s critical that when we make our budget decisions if we see there’s a need for extra teachers, extra education assistants, professional development or whatever it is—it’s driven by the needs of our students.”

Rezansoff said the board has con-sulted with staff from every school and also had public consultation meetings at both ends of the district.

“We asked those same questions at every meeting and we used all of that to steer the direction and make decisions on the budget process,” she said. “We were really pleased with it.”

Rezansoff said the board feels posi-

tive about all the decisions they had to make.

“We were really able to provide full support for all our schools,” she said. “We’re doing a lot of hiring this year. We have a big number of retirements. There will be a lot of new faces at our schools next year.”

Rezansoff said the board had to take money from their contingency fund ($708,130) to balance the budget but emphasizes that there is enough money in that fund to cover it. The contingency fund is money that has been carried for-ward from previous budgets (budgeted prior year surplus appropriation).

Volunteers needed for runThe 35th annual Terry Fox run will

take place on Sept. 20, and organizers are seeking a group of individuals to stage the event in the West Boundary region.

The first run in this area was held in 1991, but the West Boundary has not hosted a run for several years now, and the Terry Fox Foundation is keen to see a return of the race to the area.

In a statement to this newspaper, the foundation said, “Terry Fox has inspired an incredible wave of change over the past 35 years with his legacy contribut-ing to Boundary’s rich history. The first Terry Fox Run in the [West] Boundary was held in 1991 but unfortunately, the tradition has been missing for the past

several years. “As the volunteer run organizer, your

responsibilities will include recruiting committee members, confirming the route, promoting the run, and oversee-ing run day activities. The time com-mitment ranges from two to four hours weekly during the months leading up to the National Run Day, which is on Sun-day, Sept. 20 this year.

“Whether as a couple or individual, the volunteer run organizer will always be assisted by the Terry Fox Foundation in the planning process, and given the resources to make it a success.”

To volunteer or for more informa-tion, please contact Donna White, pro-vincial director of the Terry Fox Foun-dation, British Columbia and Yukon. Phone 1-888-836-9786 or email [email protected].

ENGRAVING

This year’s Kettle River Art Club show was once again an impressive exhibit displaying the work of many talented Boundary artists.

The primary craft encouraged this term at the club was the etching, carving and designing of dried gourds, and the display of these pieces drew lots of attention from visitors at the event held May 30-31.

As a result of the craft’s introduction to the club’s repertoire, new members are anticipated to join next fall. The club is open to all crafts, paint-ing, ceramics, card and box making, quilling, iris folding, knitting and crocheting. The club is al-ways open to suggestions and artisans wishing to share their expertise are encouraged to join.

The turnout for the show was strong, and about 40 visitors left with door prizes, which were donated by local businesses and individuals throughout the Boundary region.

Summer Solstice Dance

Parking Lot Party was fantasticI hope this finds you

all enjoying the sunshine and warm weather we’ve been having. I know I am thankful for the air conditioning unit here at the library and for the village works guys who keep things running smoothly.

Wow! What a fantastic event the Parking Lot Party turned out to be! The vendors were wonderful, the band was jamming and the library sold out of hot dogs and hamburgers. A very BIG thank you to everyone who came out to sup-port the event.

It must be mentioned that Doug and Jolly, their family and McMynn’s Family Foods are huge supporters of the library and because of their generosity and kindness this event was a success.

There are exciting things happening at the li-brary this summer. Madi-son Harpur joins us here at the library as our sum-mer reading club coordi-

nator and library assistant. She promises to bring some fun ideas and activities for the kids of the Boundary. Kicking off the summer kids programs is a performance by the Purple Pirate on July 10 at 2 p.m. at the Midway Community Hall. He’s a fun performer with a message about bul-lying.

The following weekend is going to be a busy one. Mark your calendars: start-ing Saturday, July 18th after the Kettle River Days festivities, registration and check in for the Kettle River Memo-rial Run starts at 3:30 followed by an old

fashioned street dance. There will be a concession and beer gardens as well as live music by Highway 97.

Sunday, July 19 is the Kettle River Memorial Run! Start time is 8 a.m. with awards immediately following the run. You can register online at kettleriverme-morialrun.ca or come into the library to register. Collect pledges for the B.C. Cancer Foundation and help us raise money for the Patient and Emergency Care Fund for Sindi Ahluwalia Hawkins Centre for the Southern Interior.

In the last five years, over $40,000 has been raised for this fund. We are looking for volunteers for this event so if you are able to help out, please contact Nicole at 2504492620 or email [email protected].

Prestigious award for TasakaFormer Greenwood resident Chuck Tasa-

ka’s book My Hometown, My Furusato: Family History of Greenwood-Midway was awarded third place in the B.C. Genealogical Society book awards for 2014. Tasaka was honoured at a special awards ceremony on June 13 in Burnaby.

Born in Midway 70 years ago, Tasaka’s family moved to Greenwood when he was a toddler and he lived there until he graduated from the now-defunct high school.

Upon graduation, Tasaka enrolled at the University of British Columbia, eventually attaining his teaching degree and embarking on a long teaching career on Vancouver Is-land. He currently resides in Nanaimo.

This was his second book about the area, and copies are for sale in the museum. His current locally-based project is the restora-tion of Greenwood’s Ohairi Park, which he hopes to transform into a vibrant monument to the Nikkei people who once lived there.

Tasaka will also serve as guide for a group of Japanese tourists when they visit Green-wood on July 13.
