Wellbeing ~ Al-Anon Family Groups

Support groups for familiesand friends of alcoholics

How do alcoholics affect familiesand friends? Alcoholism is a family disease. The diseaseaffects all those who have a relationship witha problem drinker.

Those of us closest to the alcoholic suffer the most, and those who care the most can easily get caughtup in the behaviour of another person. We react tothe alcoholic's behaviour. We focus on them, what

they do, where they are, how much they drink. We try to control theirdrinking for them. We take on the blame, guilt and shame that reallybelong to the drinker. We can become as addicted to the alcoholic,as the alcoholic is to alcohol. We, too, can become ill.

There is help available from Al-Anon and AlateenThe only requirement for membership in Al-Anon and Alateen is thata person be affected by someone else’s alcoholism or problemdrinking. Some members have a relationship with a drinker who is stillactively drinking, while other drinkers have already achieved sobriety. Some members have chosen to maintain their relationship with thedrinker or past drinker while others have cut ties or moved on.Regardless of their current circumstances, members’ experiences haveresulted in hurt and loss. Their common experiences allow people tocome together for mutual aid and support. In an Al-Anon meeting, members share their own experiences, strength, and hope with eachother, which helps each of them on their individual paths to recovery.

MeetingsMeetings are held locally in Boscombe and Ringwood and are open toanyone affected by another person’s alcoholism or drink problem.Contact Al-Anon’s Head Office to gain details of the local meetings.

another tale of dodgy expense claims submitted byMPs we've chosen to represent us. They're claiming for everything from tap washers torelining the moats of their country estates. They'reclaiming repayments on mortgages that were paidoff two years earlier. What sort of environment dothese people inhabit? In the real world the averageperson looks forward to paying off their mortgagefor years, and can tell you the exact date (andprobably time) they can finally crawl out from underthe millstone that's hung around their neck for aquarter of a century. Should we really expect to berepresented by people who are so rich they don'teven notice when they've paid of a major debt? But perhaps we shouldn't be so surprised that mostMPs have put in dodgy expense claims. Perhaps weshould be more surprised that we expectedanything else of them in the first place. Blair, Brown,Cameron ~ can you imagine any of them doing areal job? A day's real work would kill them (as itwould me, to be perfectly blunt, but I'm not askinganyone to vote for me). And as for the spouse who claimed expenses foradult movies, I don't think we should judge him tooharshly. After all, Sainsbury's now has a shelfspecifically for adult cereals! I've bought a fewpackets myself, hoping a lap dancer might fall out ofthem, but so far no luck:-)

had a fag ~ for anyone who’s tried the patches, inhalersand chewing gums and still finding it impossible to giveup the habit then I’ve discovered another option that maybe able to help you begin a smoke free life ~ the E-Cig.

The day I received my Black Mini Starter Pack I couldn’twait to unwrap it, charge the battery and get puffing ~ yes, puffing! The E-Cig uses cartridges that contain nicotine(available in Nil to High levels) and various flavourings;it produces a vapour that looks like smoke but is primarilymade up of water. The E-Cigs are available in differentstyles and colours ~ some look so much like a cigaretteanyone would be pushed to notice the difference, myBlack Mini is also available in white and pink andresembles a pen rather than a cigarette:-)

From smoking near on 50 fags a day I am now proud tosay I’m a non smoker - I haven’t had a Mayfair since my firstpuff on my Black Mini! My brain still thinks I’m smoking; I still see the ‘smoke’, I’m still puffing and holdingsomething that resembles a cigarette ~ it really isextremely clever! What’s more, when I worked out howmuch I was spending on Mayfair a month compared to myE-Cig I was astounded ~ I’m saving over £300 a month!

We’d been together for 26 years, we wenteverywhere together and from how it started, casual and enjoyable, over the years theintensity of the relationship became such that itbecame overwhelming, I thought we’d alwaysbe together. It came as quite a shock then to my friends and familywhen I announced that we’d parted. “I’ve found anotherdesire” I found myself blurting out, “We’ve grown apartand there’s no way I’m going back”.

It’s Sunday 17th May as I write this, we’ve been apart for6 weeks and 3 days and I can only think of one briefmoment during that time where I’ve wished we weretogether again, other than that, my new partner and Iare extremely happy together. I find myself sleepingeasier, my head’s a lot clearer, life looks a lot brighterand I feel 10 years younger!

You may be thinking I couldn’t have been in love before, that I can never have been totally devoted . . . but you’dbe wrong. My life, 6 weeks and 4 days ago was engulfedby my significant other, we were joined at the hip, for 26years I was totally and utterly reliant on knowing we hada relationship in which, no matter how bad things got,I could rely on them to calm me, soothe me and all inall make life seem easier to cope with.

Thing is, once I found another who could give me all ofthat but without any nasty side effects I just had to go forit . . . goodbye Mayfair . . . hello Electronic Cigarette (E-Cig)!

For any other smokers that find themselves in theposition of not actually able to do anything until they’ve

Then there’s the fact I no longer have that awful smoker’s smellon my clothes and in my hair ~ I didn’t realise how bad thesmell was ~ didn’t realise I smelt at all ~ now that I don’t smokeI can tell when someone walks into a room after having beenoutside to have a quick cigarette ~ it stinks!

That leads me onto another plus point for my E-Cig, I can smokeit anywhere. It is totally legal to smoke in any location andwithin any premises that introduced a ban on tobacco basedcigarettes ~ as the E-Cig can also be used as an addition totobacco based cigarettes ~ use your normal fags as youcurrently do and then use the E-Cigs where you are unableto smoke normal fags due to the smoking ban ~ it’s at thediscretion of the owner of the premises so best to ask beforeyou start puffing on one in your local pub or restaurant:-)

I am so impressed with my E-Cig that I have decided to hostan open evening to share what I know with as many peopleas will listen:-) It’ll give people a chance to sample an E-Cigand ask any questions they may have. Attendees will also beable to order their very own E-cig at a discounted price. It willbe an informal gathering and there’ll be no pressure.

If you are interested in joining in on this evening then pleaseemail me at the address below or call or text my mobile:07718 031048. Once I know there’s some interest I’ll informeveryone of a date and time ~ it’ll be June sometime.

If you are the owner of a pub or restaurant that already hasaccepted the use of Electronic Cigarettes in your premises orif you’d like to know more with a view to promoting the useof them then please contact me ~ I’ll be putting together afree list of pubs, clubs and restaurants in the town that allowthem ~ I also have signs that you can display in your shopwindow ~ for anyone who has had trade affected by thesmoking ban then allowing E-Cigs may just be the answer todrawing business back.

that need it the most? This is a question socialentrepreneur, Cary Lightfoot has been asking andshe thinks she's found the answer in Creative Kids.

The charity was set up this year to provide a range ofchallenging and inspired activities for children andyoung people aged 4 ~ 16. Their objective; to initiate, develop and produce ground breaking programs thatencourage children and young people to explore theircreative potential. The programs on offer includeperformance arts, arts and crafts and outdoor pursuits.

This summer Creative Kids are planning an Arts Tour ofsix holiday clubs in Bournemouth. The week-longprograms will bring local drama & dance practitioners, costume designers, storytellers, puppeteers andtheatrical make-up artists together with local children toinspire them in a series of workshop-led activities thatwill be held together by a Creative Kids Activity Leaderand existing holiday club staff.

Cary enthuses, “For the most part, children attendingholiday clubs come from working families on low-incomes. Without the benefit of 'Working Families Tax

Credits' children could not attend holiday club, let aloneafford to go to a summer arts school. Our projectsimprove opportunities for local children by providingpositive and participatory arts programs that everyonecan afford”.

The Arts Tour is unique in the way Creative Kids areusing existing infrastructures to deliver their artsactivities, thus enabling each provision to make a hugedifference by adding enormous value to the experienceof all those involved.

Another date for your diary is The Creative Kid's Carnivalheld on Saturday 29th August. The charity are organisinga free children's arts festival at Kings Park, Bournemouth~ for more details see the entertainment section onpage 18.

Future plans include an outreach program targetingvulnerable groups such as young offenders, young mumsand young people in care. Additionally Creative Kids holdregular themed Charity Gala Balls as a means to raisefunds and awareness of their work in the community.

Whether you wish to donate your time or money, become a member or find out more about enrollingyour child on the arts tour, please drop into CreativeKids for a chat.

Get GardeningPerennial BeautyThe season for outdoor entertaining is upon us,the time when we can get full benefit from the'outdoor room'. One group of plants, perennials, can help to deliver results that you can be proudof whilst still allowing plenty of deck-chair time.

Perennials are so versatile thatmany will thrive in pots andcontainers on paved patios, balconies and decks.Emerging every spring, theygrow up quickly in the risingtemperatures. By June manyare already flowering, bringing joyful colour to thegarden. As well as beautifulflowers, many have attractivefoliage too. If space is limited,it's important to chooseplants that deliver in morethan one way, or over alonger time frame, resulting inmaximum ornamental value.

Consider Digitalis davisiana, which will give you long stems of pale yellow flowers.Digitalis x mertonensis is a clump forming plant that willyield pinkish buff flowers and reach a height of 90cm. Theknowledgeable staff at Golden Acres will be able to suggestothers that are particularly good for your region.

Perennials do not normally require a lot of care, thoughsome attention will be rewarded with improvedperformance. Tidy up at the end of the flowering season, cut back dead or withered shoots and weed at the sametime. Water in dry spells, though a good mulch willminimise the need for this. Feeding in spring with bonemeal or slow-release fertiliser will ensure a long andhealthy life for your perennials.

The menus through my doorhave always looked basically thesame, the choice of dishes are sameold, same old . . . and as for thequality of the food, well, what shouldbe a relatively healthy option ofvarious vegetables, lean meat andseafood often finds itself swimmingin a fatty sauce which outweighs anyhealthy ingredients.Well, if you’re also in the same mind as Iam ~ tired of the same old, same old . . .then the all new Golden Chef is a must!I had almost given up on finding a localOriental Takeaway that could deliver highquality food . . . that was until I met PeterSim of Golden Chef. Food bites ~ Sun, Surf and SaladsThe Met office has promised us a great Britishsummer. Temperatures could soar. I will believe itwhen I see it! Whatever the weather, our attitudeto cooking changes in the summer. It's fine in the winter to stay inside making stews and soupsand perhaps do a little knitting, but the Great Britishsummertime calls for ''Outside time'', whether it be in ourown back gardens with a barbeque or down at Boscombebeach with a surf board and a picnic lunch. When it comes to mealtimes we want to spend less timein a hot kitchen and more time socialising and having fun. Here are some suggestions for simple and impressivesummer dishes. They can all be prepared ahead and all ofthem would be equally impressive and delicious in plasticcontainers on the beach or on a more exotic buffet table.● Add pomegranate syrup and fresh pomegranate

seeds to shop bought humus. It looks beautiful andboosts the vitamin C and goodness. Serve with flatbreads or wrap up in a tortilla with lots of salad.

● Keep a stock of easy-to-use store cupboard itemson hand. Think Mediterranean with items likeolives, marinated vegetables, and feta cheese in thefridge. They are lovely served with a green saladand topped with balsamic vinaigrette.

● If you have even the tiniest garden space, trygrowing your own salad leaves. It will save youmoney and you can pick as you need.

● If you are cooking pasta for dinner, cook extra andmake a pasta salad the next day.

A Lighter Look on Life

I have the most brilliantDad. Yes I do. He isamazing, understandingand an absolute gem, a realdiamond. An absolute ruby.

So with Father’s Daylooming, the question is,

what do you buy the manly figure that boughtyou sweets and dried your tears when youdidn't win the egg and spoon race?

Socks? Mmm . . . practical, yet not very original.A handkerchief with their initials on . . . very80's darling ~ slightly dated in this day andage though hey, especially if it is not Gucci!

A crate of his favourite beer? Oh yes, now you'retalking. Upon careful observation a few Tetley's ora few cheeky pints of Guiness always go downwell (Why do older men drink "proper" hopslike?). And, if you wanted to push the boat out, crack open the whiskey and settle down for agood old trip down memory lane, back in the daywhen they had a head full of hair and a penchantfor driving Ford Capri's or old style motorbikes.

Watch for the glisten in their eyes and recallthe antics of too many rum 'n' cokes whilsteither jiving the night away or glued to the T.V.embracing James Bond in all his glory.
