Board Candidate Recruitment Process An important responsibility of Walking Mountains Directors and Advisory Directors is to identify and assist in the recruitment of new Board Members. Once new candidates are identified, the Governance Committee is responsible for vetting and presenting potential Board candidates to the full Board for consideration. In order to engage the full Board in this important responsibility, the Governance Committee has identified the following process for Board candidate recruitment. All Board members are asked to identify qualified candidates to the Governance Committee. Board candidates should be willing to contribute their wealth, wisdom, work and wallop and meet the criteria outlined in the Walking Mountains Board Director and Advisory Director Job Descriptions. The Governance Committee will compile an on-going list of candidates with input from the entire Board and present this list regularly to the full Board for feedback. Feedback about all candidates should be presented confidentially to members of the Governance Committee. Once a candidate has been vetted and deemed qualified, the Board member who suggested the candidate, or a member of the Governance Committee, will ensure the candidate is familiar with Walking Mountains mission and programs as needed by inviting them to participate in upcoming educational programs and special events. A campus tour, observing a school program or summer science camp, and meeting with staff, is also an option to further a candidate’s education and interest. If the candidate has clearly expressed interest in Board service or seems inclined to serve, the lead Board or Governance Committee member should consult with the Governance Committee Chair to strategize the most effective invitation process. Often a meeting or lunch is scheduled with the candidate to extend an invitation by the Executive Director and or Board Chair. An invitation is best framed as an exploratory process, making clear that the candidate has been identified by our Governance Committee and Board and we welcome her or him to get to become more familiar with our organization. A casual meeting with select Board members can also be arranged for the candidate for this purpose. If the candidate declines the invitation, information will be gathered to understand their reasons. Based on this information, the candidate may or may not be approached again in the future for Board service. If the candidate accepts the invitation, their name will be included in an upcoming, electronic Board ballot. A Board orientation will be conducted with all new Board members.

AnimportantresponsibilityofWalkingMountainsDirectorsandAdvisoryDirectorsistoidentifyandassistintherecruitmentofnewBoardMembers.Oncenewcandidatesareidentified,theGovernanceCommitteeisresponsibleforvettingandpresentingpotentialBoardcandidatestothefullBoardforconsideration.InordertoengagethefullBoardinthisimportantresponsibility,theGovernanceCommitteehasidentifiedthefollowingprocessforBoardcandidaterecruitment.

• AllBoardmembersareaskedtoidentifyqualifiedcandidatestotheGovernanceCommittee.Boardcandidatesshouldbewillingtocontributetheirwealth,wisdom,workandwallopandmeetthecriteriaoutlinedintheWalkingMountainsBoardDirectorandAdvisoryDirectorJobDescriptions.

• TheGovernanceCommitteewillcompileanon-goinglistofcandidateswithinputfromtheentireBoardandpresentthislistregularlytothefullBoardforfeedback.FeedbackaboutallcandidatesshouldbepresentedconfidentiallytomembersoftheGovernanceCommittee.

• Onceacandidatehasbeenvettedanddeemedqualified,theBoardmemberwhosuggestedthecandidate,oramemberoftheGovernanceCommittee,willensurethecandidateisfamiliarwithWalkingMountainsmissionandprogramsasneededbyinvitingthemtoparticipateinupcomingeducationalprogramsandspecialevents.Acampustour,observingaschoolprogramorsummersciencecamp,andmeetingwithstaff,isalsoanoptiontofurtheracandidate’seducationandinterest.

• IfthecandidatehasclearlyexpressedinterestinBoardserviceorseemsinclinedtoserve,theleadBoardorGovernanceCommitteemembershouldconsultwiththeGovernanceCommitteeChairtostrategizethemosteffectiveinvitationprocess.OftenameetingorlunchisscheduledwiththecandidatetoextendaninvitationbytheExecutiveDirectorandorBoardChair.

• Aninvitationisbestframedasanexploratoryprocess,makingclearthatthecandidatehasbeenidentifiedbyourGovernanceCommitteeandBoardandwewelcomeherorhimtogettobecomemorefamiliarwithourorganization.AcasualmeetingwithselectBoardmemberscanalsobearrangedforthecandidateforthispurpose.

• Ifthecandidatedeclinestheinvitation,informationwillbegatheredtounderstandtheirreasons.Basedonthisinformation,thecandidatemayormaynotbeapproachedagaininthefutureforBoardservice.

• Ifthecandidateacceptstheinvitation,theirnamewillbeincludedinanupcoming,electronicBoardballot.

• ABoardorientationwillbeconductedwithallnewBoardmembers.
