Cara is specifically looking to appoint a passionate, innovative and knowledgeable

Finance Director to provide effective strategic leadership in achieving the targets

set in its ambitious strategic plan 2019-2021.

About Cara

We are a national organisation providing a collaborative and partnership platform

to enhance sport and physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities.

In Cara we believe that people, irrespective of the nature of their disabilities, should

have access to lifelong opportunities to participate in sports and physical activities

of their choice.

Our strategy, which was launched in January 2019, provides a route map to guide

and focus our work over a three year period. It outlines a clear commitment to

working in collaboration with national and local partners to make active and

healthy lifestyles possible for people with disabilities, while ensuring the voice and needs

of people with disabilities is placed at the forefront of all our decisions and actions.

Cara, a company limited by guarantee, was established in 2007 with the support

of Sport Ireland and the Institute of Technology Tralee to coordinate and

support the Local Sports Partnership Sports Inclusion Disability Programme.

Over the last 12 years, Cara’s remit has broadened into a leading role identified in

supporting both the National Sports Policy 2018-2027 and Sport Ireland Policy

on Participation in Sport by People with Disabilities.

Cara is responsible for grass roots engagement through direct engagement and support of the Local Sports Partnerships and network of Sports Inclusion Disability Officers.

There is also a strong emphasis on education and training, and a commitment to supporting and equipping the whole sector in increasing awareness and opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sport and physical activity across Ireland.

1. Provide strategic leadership and support in the development and delivery of enhanced opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sport and physical activity of their choice.

2. Represent the needs of people with disabilities in relation to their experiences in sport and physical activity, while also developing their awareness of the benefits and opportunities to participate.

3. Enhance the quality of sport and physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities.

4. Build effective organisation capabilities to enable Cara respond to present and future needs through open, transparent and accountable operations.

In 2019, Cara continued to build on its successes by:

In 2019, Cara successfully added 244 signees from clubs, centres, organisations

and disability services to the Sport Inclusion Disability Charter. The charter

is a national campaign to highlight the experiences and needs of people with

disabilities in participating in sport and physical activity across Ireland.

Continuing to support and strengthen the capacity of the Local Sports

Partnerships and network of Sports Inclusion Disability Officers to further

develop locally led plans and long term sustainable physical activity programmes

for people with disabilities.

Engaging with and supporting 38 National Governing Bodies of Sport to impact on

increased participation opportunities for people with disabilities within their sport.

Delivering 111 Inclusive Training Workshops to 1,822 participants through

a network of tutors, building capacity through Disability Inclusion Training,

Inclusive Fitness Training, Autism in Sport and Inclusive Adventure Activities

Training.

37 Campers and 3 LITs from 17 different counties all across Ireland attended

Camp Abilities for a week of sports, activities, fun and games.

Facilitating the National Seminar for Inclusion, an annual flagship event,

where over 220 delegates across 113 organisation attended.

The Board consists of:

• Ten Directors drawn from a variety of backgrounds based on their skill sets,

knowledge, and experience.

• A Chair elected by the Board, a Vice-Chairperson, and a company Secretary,

elected at AGM.

• Sub-committees to be appointed: Audit and Risk, Nominations and

Remunerations.

• Additional Special Advisors designated to serve as appropriate and required.

• Providing efficient and effective strategic leadership of Cara.

• Upholding and working towards the vision, mission, values and objectives of Cara and ensuring the organisation continues to work towards these.

• Support the organisation to identify and develop diversified income streams through fundraising, commercial income and business partnerships.

• Acting in the interests of Cara at all time in relation to assets, property, statutory obligations and management requirements as outlined in the Board Handbook.

• Agreeing a schedule of matters specifically reserved for major decision-making by the Board.

• Ensuring Cara complies with relevant legal requirements.

• Promoting prudent and effective management of organisational resources (financial and human).

• Ensuring there are strategies and policies in place that will support the objectives of Cara.

• Developing and monitoring effective risk management strategies for Cara.

• Developing and monitoring internal systems that are transparent and accountable to stakeholders.

• At all times, acting with integrity and upholding the interests of the organisation.

• Championing the work of Cara and acting as a spokesperson for Cara, where relevant.

The role of finance director will have the additional responsibility of ‘Chair of the Finance & Risk Sub-Committee’ and will:

• Provide strategic financial direction to support the Board in meeting its strategic goals.• Assist the Board in identifying, understanding and managing its financial risks.• Ensure the organisation is financially robust and sustainable.• Ensure the organisation is fully compliant in its statutory and regulatory obligations.• Ensure the organisation achieves high standards of financial governance.• To be an authorised signatory of the company.

• Candidates to have at least 5 years financial management

experience. It is desirable for candidates to have

accountancy experience.

• Evidence of success, within or outside of the

sport sector, in a Charity, Corporate, Education,

Military, or Professional Services environment.

• Evidence of the ability to act with

professionalism and probity, and with a strong

philosophy of equity, inclusion and diversity.

• Evidence of leading in a change environment.

• Experience on other Boards or management where

strategic planning was part of the role.

• Credibility in and knowledge of the Irish sporting and/or

disability sectors.

• Awareness and understanding of issues facing sports organisations at domestic

and/or international level.

• Legal and Corporate Governance experience would be beneficial.

FINANCE DIRECTOR - BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Recruitment Pack

This position is voluntary, unpaid, very rewarding and will involve a commitment of

approximately 20 days p.a. (inclusive of Board and sub-committee meetings,

performance reviews and external representation).

The terms of office is 4 years with a second term (subject to Board approval) of 4 years.

All reasonable expenses incurred during the fulfillment of duty will be reimbursed in

line with Cara’s Finance and Administration Policy.
