HACK & BACK April, 2018

The season has now come to an end. Playoffs will conclude this week followed by our Annual General Meeting on Thursday, April 5th. It has been a good year here at the Fergus Curling Club and we hope to see everyone back again next season.

The Fergus Little Rocks held a “bring a friend day” which saw 37 young people out on the ice. Neil, Calum, Katrina, and Team Laitar did an amazing job keeping them all busy and they had a blast. Hopefully we will see some of them come out next year.

The Little Rocks held their Banquet on Sunday, March 25th where, after games of “Curling in the Dark” and other fun games, awards were handed out and a delicious Spaghetti Supper was enjoyed by the curlers and their parents. A huge thank you to Carl Gray for preparing the wonderful meal!

Most Improved: Aiden Grant

A special thank you to all the parents, grandparents and siblings who came out every week to watch and encourage the young players. Also to Team Laitar who assisted Neil and Calum, Katrina and Dawna every Sunday to ensure the kids were getting the best of instruction while having a whole lot of fun.

We will miss Teaghan, Hanna and Katie as they are off to University in the Fall. We wish them every success.

Memories: From Our Little Rock Olympics a few years back!!

This year, winning the Wilkin Bonspiel!

Teaghan forwarded the following message:

As many of you may know three quarters of the Laitar team will be moving on to University next year and for that reason our team is saying (hopefully not permanently) goodbye to the Fergus Curling Club. This club and the members within it have given us the support we've needed throughout the years to grow to who we are today.

For myself, Teaghan Laitar, I've grown up around the Fergus club. Starting at Little Rocks, moving my way to juniors, becoming a Little Rocks coach and eventually playing in adult leagues. The Gordon girls, Hanna and Kayla, quickly joined me and they too made their mark here at the club as they made their way through the leagues as well. And lastly, we were lucky enough to find Kaitie Taylor who became an instant fixture in our team. Looking back now there is no other set of girls I would have rather have played with. We have been lucky enough to stay together and enjoy not only the game we play but who we play it with. And there is no other club we would have loved to play at more. This club and its members have supported us in more ways than we can count. From Andy and Bonnie making sure we each get the ice time we need to all of our coaches along the way. We'd like to send some special shout outs to Dean Dunbar, Lynda Waterhouse, Stephanie Mathews and of course Neil Miller. Countless member have shared their wisdom with us throughout the years and believe me, we do remember and take it to heart. This club was amazingly supportive of us as a young team and as individuals when we came to adult leagues. So thank you to the Fergus Curling Club and to so many individuals for helping us along in our journey. Teaghan Laitar

Another member of Team Laitar, Katie Taylor, will be off to University as well. Katie was employed at Goldline in Mississauga and has sent us the following message:

Working at Goldline has given me the opportunity to meet many curlers. I was lucky enough to meet Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris the day before they left for the Olympics this past February.

It was exciting to meet them, especially as they went on to win the mixed doubles gold medal. These, along with other elite curlers have made my curling experience so far a very unforgettable one. However, there’s nothing more memorable than my time at the Fergus Curling Club and being a part of Team Laitar. Since joining this team I’ve become very aware of the deep ties and support of the Fergus Curling Club. I am very grateful for how welcoming all the members of the FCC have been since I joined in 2015. I hope to see many of you again when I return from University.

Katie Taylor.

A TOAST TO THE PIPERS! LET THE GAMES BEGIN…..

Bill Taylor Memorial Bonspiel - April 7, 2018. This is the 34th year for the bonspiel. A real

fun day! All proceeds from this event go to the Lung Association in memory of Bill. Chris does a lot of planning for this bonspiel and it never disappoints. This year, try wheelchair curling! It is VERY DIFFICULT. The photo shows where rocks ended up. The balloons were the target. Buy a rock/take a shot!

On Sunday, April 8th some of the Little Rockers and their siblings and parents took to the ice and had a fabulous time! Afterwards they had their hot chocolate and cookies and said goodbye to

the curling rink for another year. How do you know when the season is over?
