TRANSCRIPT
August 2014
Vol. 70 No. 5
Floyd “Skip” Henke was born in Kansas
City, Missouri.
Skip’s father worked in the construction
industry and due to job opportunities his
family moved many times during his
childhood. Therefore, Skip lived in 26
different homes and attended 14 different
schools going from kindergarten to
graduation from Newport Harbor High
School in Newport Beach, California. Skip
lettered in track, baseball and football while
attending four different high schools.
Following graduation from high school he
enlisted in the United States Navy and
served from 1960 to 66. He graduated with
academic honors from boot camp and at
Aviation Electrician Mates School in
Jacksonville, Florida. He served for six years on active duty as
an aviation electrician and combat aircrew member on a P2V
Neptune Patrol Bomber.
Skip was assigned to V.P. 10 at Naval Air Station Brunswick,
Maine. His flight duty took him around the world to many
assignments including the Cyprus uprising, the Cuban
blockade, the Bay of Pigs invasion, as well as a Vietnam
Veteran.
Skip became a Journeyman Electrician in the International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union 11 Los Angeles
and later worked for the Local Union as a Business
Representative and Business manager for 18 years. He later
retired in 2006 after working for the Los Angeles Building
Trades Council for eleven years.
Skip has been a member of the Santa Clarita Elks Lodge since
joining in 1991, he served as Lecturing
Knight and continued through the Chairs
and became Exalted Ruler in 1998, served
as Lodge Trustee for five years, Ritual
Coach, Chairman of the Past Exalted
Rulers Association and served as several
other Committee Chairmanships. Skip was
elected Honorary Life Member in 2013.
He was recognized by the Metropolitan
District serving as Chairman of Ritual
Contest Committee, Ritual Training
Chairman, Drug Awareness Chairman,
Elks National Foundation chairman,
Auditor to the District Deputy Grand
Exalted Ruler in 2000-2001, District
Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler 2004-2005
and currently serving as District Leader for
the Metropolitan District.
Skip was recognized by the California-Hawaii Elks
Association serving as Association Vice President in
2001-2002, Assistant Tiler 2006-2007, California-Hawaii Elks
Association Board of Trustees 200-2009, Chairman, California-
Hawaii Elks Association Board of Trustees 2009-2010,
California-Hawaii Elks Association Chaplain 2010-2011 and
elected California-Hawaii Elks Association First Vice President
2013-2014.
His dedication to country, community and fraternity is equaled
only by his dedication to and love for his wife, Karen, their four
children, two grandchildren and a spoiled puppy named “Sadie”.
Skip and Karen are also active in the Santa Clarita Roving Elks
Kamper Klub and enjoy get away trips in their motor home.

EXALTED RULERAloha.
Here we are now
four months into
the Elk year, and
already so much
has happened at our
Lodge. It never
ceases to amaze
me the immense
footprint that we, as
a benevolent/patriotic organization, have
made in our community and communities
everywhere. The patriotism we exude to all
our Veterans near and far is second to none. I
see it in everything that we do. Witness our
4th of July Celebration. We raised our
Majestic Garrison Flag once again, with the
families in attendance enjoying the beautiful
day by the pool, with the Keiki reciting the
“pledge of allegiance” and the singing of our
National Anthem. The barbeque was going
full-blast, and there was free watermelon
slices for everyone. What a fun day and what
special way to celebrate Independence Day.
Once again, I am proud to be an Elk and
even prouder to be ER.
The Elks have adopted the credo: “So long
as there are Veterans, the Benevolent and
Protective Order of Elks will never forget
them.” I am blessed to have children that not
only have served our country in the military,
but also have spouses that have served. Being
a veteran myself has made me more proud of
the fact that they want to serve as well. I have
a son and two daughters who have served,
and three sons-in-law serving as well.
I want to share a short personal story. An
event that happened at the Lodge that
touched everyone who witnessed it. My
son-in-law, Carlos, a Navy Chief, had been
on deployment for the last 7 months. My
daughter Reina and 2 granddaughters (12 &
9) were here visiting with us the last 6 weeks
and were trying to fly back to Florida, as his
deployment was scheduled to end, and they
wanted to be home when he arrived. They
were having a great time being here with
family and friends, but missing their daddy
was starting to show. They had a jar loaded
with 247 chocolate kisses (one kiss from Dad
for each day he would be gone) that was
almost empty. It was time to catch a military
hop back to Jacksonville, Florida, just in time
for Dad to come home. However, one week
of trying to get on a MAC flight with no luck
was exhausting.
Then the wonderful call came from my
son-in-law Carlos, telling Reina he was going
to surprise the girls. He was on his way to
Hawaii and to wait for him. Sunday morning
we gathered our family at the Elks for what
they (the girls) thought was a good bye
breakfast. Having the girls stand at the rail in
the dining room to look at the ocean and take
some pictures, Daddy snuck up and hugged
them. What a wonderful surprise, the tears
were really flowing not only from my
granddaughters but everyone in the dining
room watching this precious scene unfold
and then the applause started. It was
wonderful. Thank you Elks for caring, even
in the small ways of showing love, with a big
Mahalo for a veteran and his family. Elks are
about sharing and caring. Thank you for
letting me share this story with you. I get
choked up every time I think about it.
Our Lodge recently made a donation to
the Disabled Veterans Team Hawaii. A
collection of disabled Veterans who
participate in Olympics Style games. They
came back having won 11 medals. Yay! We
also continue to support our Veterans at
Tripler Hospital’s monthly Bingo games.
Please, let’s remember to always thank a
Military person when we see them…it means
so much. Veterans Day is a ways off, but our
Veterans Committee chairman, Mary
Whitworth, a retired Army Colonel, has
already begun work on our November 11,

HOUSE COMMITTEEAloha from your House Committee!
Well, summer is upon us! It’s great to see
our members enjoying themselves and taking
advantage of the Club’s amenities and the
great weather. Your current House
Committee includes Peter Dietrich, Fred
Martinez, Robin Hood-Mapp and John
Carroll.
I just would like to remind our members to
present your membership card to our Front
Desk personnel and to properly sign in your
guests. Only a member of the Lodge may
bring a guest(s). Members are responsible for
your guest while at the Club, and the member
must be present on the premises while the
guest(s) remain on the Club premises.
Due to the heavy usage of the pool area,
please observe the posted pool rules. If you
have any questions, check with the manager
on duty. Pool side tables can not be
“reserved” by having someone placing a
towel on a chair with nobody physically
present.
HOSPITALITY HOST position: The Club
currently employees one part-time
Hospitality Host, which assists our Front
Desk personnel ensuring members and guests
entering the Lodge/Club properly identify
themselves and sign-in during busy periods.
The Host also monitors the pool area to
ensure that the pool rules are being observed
and to answer any questions members/guests
may have. He is not functioning as a life
guard. The Host is under the direction of the
Club’s management staff.
We are looking to bring on two additional
individuals as Hospitality Hosts. It is a
part-time position, limited to 19 hours or less
per week. The pay is $12.50 per hour. This
position is not a “security officer” type
position. Applicants should be a member,
male or female, who has a knowledge of the
Lodge/Club, personable, good people skills
and has the time. If anyone is interested,
please contact Club Manager Ben Dowling or
Assistant Club Manager George Moniz. They
will provide you with a copy of the job
description and conduct the interview.
Your Committee and Club management are
looking forward to providing our members
and guests with an enjoyable summer of
food, beverages and entertainment. The
Lodge and other committees are in the
planning stages for fund-raising events which
should add fun and excitement during the rest
of the Lodge year.
Please enjoy the summer here at our
Lodge/Club. Have fun, but do so in a safe
manner, especially when consuming
alcoholic beverages.

Chairman, House Committee
Lodge member Mr. Thomas Koani was presented an ENF Recognition Certificate for
achieving Honorary Founder Donor status for his contributions meeting and exceeding
$1,000.00 to the Elks National Foundation. Mr. Koani is a 37-year Life Member and a Vietnam
veteran. The presentation was made at a Lodge meeting by Lodge ENF Chairman and Loyal
Knight Andrew Watson.
2014, plans. Watch for more information in
the coming months. And speaking of Bingo,
plans are being made to have a monthly
bingo event, by popular demand.
By the time you read this, I will have
returned from the Grand Lodge Convention
in New Orleans. I am sure to have much to
share with the Lodge members in next
month’s Aloha Elk.
By now, I am sure you are starting to
experience the major efforts your Board
of Directors are making to keep our
membership informed by using social media
and the remaking of our web site. Check it
out: www.elkslodge616.org. Thanks to our
Esteemed Lecturing Knight George “Gibi”
del Barrio, the new web site, by all the
feedback, has been a big hit.

Reminder:
SENIOR FAIR AT 616Aloha Elks! This is a reminder regarding
our Senior Fair lunch and the Elks 616
Hawaiian Singers music program.
Beginning September 24, 2014, and every
4th Wednesday of the months to follow, up
until February 25, 2015, at least one or two
Senior Care Centers will be our honored
lunch guests during the Elks 616 Hawaiian
Singers program. Now in its 47th year,
this program is the longest-running
entertainment and fund raiser for Elks Major
Project. We would like to share some island
music our Seniors remembered during their
early years.
Call me for whom you would like our
Lodge to honor. If you know of someone or
have a family member being cared for by
Adult Foster Care Centers, etc., let me know
so I can arrange with their Activity Directors
or Caregivers to have our Senior family
spend a day with us.
Seating is limited. Make your call soon at
#668-8000 for more information or leave a
message. Remember my fellow members,
“ELKS CARE, ELKS SHARE.”

KUPUNA UPDATEThe cleanup of invasive seaweed in the
ocean waters near the Waikiki Aquarium was
a highly successful community service
event. Kupuna sorted through a half ton of
seaweed that had been gathered from the
ocean and brought ashore to the beach in
front of the Aquarium.
Native Limu along with several baby eel,
shrimp, slugs and a scorpion fish, which had
ben entangled in the seaweed, were culled
and returned to their ocean home. The
invasive seaweed was given to the Zoo to be
composted. The event was filmed and aired
on the 6 o’clock news on Channel 2 and
Channel 4. Olelo filmed the event which will
be shown in a future Kupuna segment.
Participating in the cleanup were were
Kupuna Edna Ellis, Chasmin Sokolosky,
Elaine Chun, Frank & Ululani Young, and
their grandchildren Gisele and Sage, Diane
Conner, Bertha Nahoopii, Hope David, her
daughter Puna, Ann Akina, Carl Reber and
Gloria Yau.
KUPUNA T-SHIRTS
All participating Kupuna were wearing
our new Kupuna T shirts. We’ve sold out of
our first run of Kupuna T-shirts but, due to
the many requests, we will be ordering
additional shirts.
Please pre-order your shirts at the front
desk where you can also sign up for our
August 23 Kualoa Fish Pond Tour. Kupuna
will also be selling our T-Shirts in the
lobby. Check with the front desk for further
information regarding date/time for shirt
sales and pick-up. All profits from Kupuna
sales go to funding Elks charities and
activities.
KUALOA FISH POND TOUR
Come holo holo with the Kupuna on our
field trip to the Kualoa Fish Ponds on

MANAGER’S
SPOTLIGHTAloha Members,
I would like to say Aloha Nui Loa to all the
members and the staff of Lodge 616. Alright.
first things first. Good news. We will be open
July 28, 29, and 30. Because of permit
delays, we at this time will be open and
business as usual on these dates. Now for the
Month of August, we have an assortment of
different types of entertainment arranged for
your enjoyment. Of course we have Bob
Nelson on Wednesdays for you with his open
mike, and on Thursdays we have done
something really unique, we have moved
Kevin Mau’s piano and put it on the dance
floor so all of you who want to dance while
you are enjoying his music can do so. So
please make a note to join Kevin and the Elks
Club on Thursday and be sure to put on your
dancing shoes. Now on Fridays and
Saturdays be sure to check the Entertainment
column because we have a variety of
different bands that will be playing for your
dancing and entertainment enjoyment. We
have Trade Winds with a lot of the old fifties
and sixties music along with Taste of
Harmony again with songs of the sixties and
seventies, and we have thrown in some
country music with a band called Hi Country
and a new group call Rocky Fellers which is
about rock and roll. Of course you need to
watch for our all time favorite person, Tahiti
Rey, on Sunday, August 24.
Now you are all invited to join us in our
Dining Room for dinner and drinks, with
beautiful sunsets. And, of course, there are
fireworks on Fridays. Be sure to ask your
server what the specials are, because Chef
Robert Goya has been working hard every
day to (1) improve on the food as well as (2)
serve you great specials. We also have been
working very hard on the Banquet menu so
that we can provide you with all your needs
at a very fair price and quality food and
service. So please call Mr. George Moniz to
set up your very special Banquet, “Christmas
office parties,” Birthdays, Anniversaries,
Graduations or any other reason you can
think of to hold a party or a Banquet. Now do
not forget we are also going to start utilizing
the big deck upstairs for parties as well, so
things are really getting exciting. Do not
forget to call.
Now to better your service we started
service training and retraining all of our
servers. We have also brought back the
automatic 15% gratuity. Now of course if at
any time you feel the server did not earn that
15% gratuity all you have to do is let the
Manager on duty know and the Manager will
take that gratuity off the check immediately.
Also, please let me inform you that the
Lodge has hired a new towing company. So
please double check to make sure your
parking pass is up-to-date and that it has been
put on your windshield. And if your guests
should bring their own car, that they get a
parking pass. Now the rule states if you park
your car in the Elks parking lot, it is only
while you are using the Elks facilities. Be
sure you do not park your car and leave it and
go somewhere else because “they will tow
it!!!” and we do not want that to happen to
anyone. Please do not tape your sticker to
the window or leave the sticker on your
dashboard, or they will tow it. If you are
parked in a handicap stall, be sure you have
the correct sticker for that as well, or they
will tow it. I hope this is all helpful
information for you to protect your car.
One more story and I will let you go. A
funny thing happened to me on the way to
the pool the other day. A member came up to
me and said he could not find any of the five
towels he brought to the pool. I said “Oh my
gosh, what color are they?” He started to
describe them and I said “Oh, I know where
those towels are! They are up at the front
desk in the lost and found. He was wide-eyed
and asked me how did they end up in the lost
and found? So I explained to him that we
found them on the back of some chairs!!! and
that they had been there for a good fifteen
minutes and no one came around to claim
them. Well, he told me that he had come
earlier this morning and had left them there
to reserve those tables. (Now it is around 10
a.m. when we were having this conversation.)
So the first question I asked him was “What
time did you come this morning ? and he
replied “about 8 a.m.” My next question was
“where did you go after you put those towels
on the chairs?” and he replied “ Oh, I went
home, had breakfast, rested for a while and
just got back.” So I then explained to him
very politely that you cannot come into the
Club, go to the pool and put towels on the
chairs to reserve the tables and then leave
thinking that they are now your tables. If you
come to the pool and sit at a table, you can
have that table till you leave. You cannot
save 2 tables or 3 tables; it is one table per
party, period. We both laughed and he said
he understands and that he promised not to
do that again. Now the moral of that story is,
please do not come to the pool or any other
place in the Club and leave something on the
table and think that that is reserving the table.
If you leave something longer than 15 min-
utes, and then return and the items are
missing, please go to the lost and found and
that is where they will be. Now wasn’t that a
great story?

MAJOR PROJECT:
Part 2 - Our Therapists and the
Services They ProvideIn the July issue of this newsletter, we
answered the frequently asked questions that
members have about the Major Project. In
this issue, we share with you the work that
our therapists do with our children. (You will
receive our Major Project fundraiser in the
mail in August. The previously mentioned
evening event has been rescheduled to
October. Information on that event will be
provided in a future issue of the Aloha Elk
and on our website.)
Through the California Hawaii Elks
Association (CHEA) office, we employ three
speech therapists in Hawaii. Hedley Uetake
and Jocelyn Agra work here on Oahu; Genie
Ruddle works on the Big Island. The number
of children that they work with varies, but on
average they help 20 to 30 children at a time.
Our program has provided services to
children of varying ages throughout the
years; however, we specifically focus on
children between the ages of 3 years old and
kindergarten. It is this “gap” group that we
address because services are not normally
provided to children in this age range when
the early development of a child is so critical.
The children possess various speech
challenges. These include:
* Putting words and sentences together
* Communicating coherently and with
meaning
* Stuttering
* Understanding what is being said to them
* Articulating words
Whatever the specific challenge may be,
the end result is that our children have
extreme difficulty with verbal
communication.
When their difficulties are discovered, they
are referred to our program by various
organizations including the Department of
Education, Kapiolani Hospital, Tripler
Hospital, Easter Seals, Catholic Charities,
the children’s doctors and many other
organizations. After referral and processing,
the child is placed in the care of one of our
therapists.
Our therapists will meet at least weekly
with the child in the presence of their parent
or guardian. This is a key component of our
program: the child’s caregiver must
participate in the child’s therapy because it is
expected that the caregiver will reinforce the
teaching that the child receives. We train
both child and caregiver at the same time.
The meeting never takes place in the office
of the therapist. It usually takes place in the
child’s home or even under a tree in the local
park because our therapists have found the
children to be more receptive to teaching if
they are in a place where they feel at ease.
Our therapists report that it is not unusual for
family members to participate along with the
child in the sessions.
Our therapists requested that I share two
things with you. First, our Major Project
Speech Therapy program works because they
witness first-hand the improvements that
each child makes in conquering their speech
challenges. Secondly, the families are
extremely grateful for the assistance they
receive for their children. The families may
not know who we are or where the funding
comes from. All they know is that someone
opened up their hearts, cared and shared.
Please support our Major Project by
returning your donation to us along with the
drawing tickets.

may not be able to be prioritized exactly as members would prefer (due to cost, permitting, disruption, or other
