Subject: Girl Inspired 2017 Conference

After a 2 ½ year hiatus, Youth Development Support Services (YDSS) is excited to bring back the

girls leadership conference: Girl Inspired. In partnership with the Sacramento Unified Education

Fund, YDSS applied for and received a mini-grant from local nonprofit, Closing The Gap, to help

put this conference on.

YDSS staff have been mentoring students participating in Women’s Leadership Academy at C.K.

McClatchy High School in order to plan and develop the conference content and structure. The

theme for this year’s conference is “Girl Inspired… It’s Who We Are, It’s What We Do.”

Girl Inspired is a dynamic one-day wellness and leadership conference for 400 students from middle

and high schools. The conference is open to any student who identifies as “female”; transgender and

gender-non conforming students are welcome. The conference is designed to address physical and

social-emotional issues that students who identify as female may face. Areas to be included are:

Healthy Lifestyle; Leadership Development; Self-Expression; Healthy Relationships; College and

Career Readiness; Social Justice and Cultural Identity. The day’s agenda will include a keynote

speaker, entertainment, engaging and interactive workshops, and an opportunity to discuss

sustainability around expanding Women’s Leadership at respective school sites.

Subject: Youth Development Support Services Budget/Grant Update

Youth Development Support Services (YDSS) is over 99% funded by grants and entitlements. Our

largest funding stream consists of state and federal Expanded Learning funds. We use Expanded

Learning dollars to provide before school, after school and summer programming; provide district

level support and programming; and with the most recent budget outline from our federal

government, state funding will be extremely important for us as we continue to serve the students in

our schools. SB78, a bill to increase funding in the After School Education and Safety (ASES)

programs will be heard by several committees in Sacramento in the near future. The success of this

funding increase effort depends on your support and our collective action.

What you can do TODAY:

Senate Education Committee - April 19 o Write a letter: Attached are draft letters that you are encouraged to sign. Nathaniel

will work with each interested Board Member in order to have the letters sent by

Monday, April 10.

o Attend the hearing and register your support: hearing starts at 9:00 a.m., Room 4203.

DATE The Honorable Kevin McCarty Chair, Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance State Capitol Sacramento, CA 95814 RE: Support After School Funding Increase Dear Chairman McCarty: The Sacramento City USD urges the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance to provide $99.2 million in needed funding to the After School Education and Safety (ASES) program in response to the statutory minimum wage increases that have been passed onto these programs. ASES serves more than 400,000 students daily in 4,000 programs. ASES programs provide academic and enrichment opportunities that are essential to closing the opportunity and achievement gap, keep kids safely off of the streets during the prime time for crime by and against children, and offer essential child care for working parents. California-specific research has proven that these programs have a range of positive impacts including improved school attendance, English fluency, academic success, crime prevention, improved health and nutrition, and important social-emotional skill development. They are also cost-effective—with $2 to $9 dollars saved for every $1 invested. These programs provide hundreds of additional learning hours to underserved students. On average, ASES programs operate at schools with over 80% of students qualifying for Free or Reduced Price Meals. Despite increases in the state minimum wage (47%) and cost of living (21%), the state has not increased the budget for ASES since 2006. As a result, ASES programs have been stretched to their breaking point. Most programs surveyed in 2016 have already had to reduce enrichment activities; academic supports, staff hours and/or training, and 29% are very likely to close their doors altogether within the next two years without an increase in the daily rate. Please support children and families across the state by ensuring they can continue to have access to the vital educational resources after school programs provide. Sincerely, NAME Sacramento City USD Board of Education

DATE The Honorable Benjamin Allen Chair, Senate Education Committee State Capitol Sacramento, CA 95814 RE: SB 78 (Leyva): After School Programs: Grant Amounts – SUPPORT AS AMENDED Dear Chairman Allen: The Sacramento City Unified School Board strongly urges the Senate Education Committee to support SB 78 authored by Senator Connie Leyva. This bill would help ensure that California’s most underserved students continue to receive after school programming. SB 78 will provide additional funding to the After School Education and Safety (ASES) program in response to the statutory minimum wage increases that have been passed onto these programs and tie future increases in ASES funding to future increases in the minimum wage. ASES serves more than 400,000 students daily in 4,000 programs. ASES programs provide academic and enrichment opportunities that are essential to closing the opportunity and achievement gap, keep kids safely off of the streets during the prime time for crime, and offer essential child care for working parents. As a result, ASES programs have been stretched to their breaking point. Most programs surveyed have already had to reduce activities; academic supports, staffing, and 29% are likely to close their doors altogether within the next two years without an increase in the daily rate. The state has a responsibility to provide additional funding for state-funded after school programs to keep up with the state mandated minimum wage increases just as the state has done with other state-funded programs such as child care and preschool. We strongly urge an “AYE” vote in favor of SB 78. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, NAME Sacramento City USD Board of Education

Subject: ELA/ELD Instructional Materials Adoption

SCUSD will engage in a K-12 English Language Arts (ELA)/English Language Development (ELD)

instructional materials selection and adoption process during the 2017-2018 school year. The

estimated cost for the instructional materials is 6.5 million dollars. The instructional materials

adoption will take place in accord with the requirements outlined in Board Policy 6161.1. The

process will include the formation of a committee comprised of teachers, site administrators and

district staff, and will include the engagement of parents and stakeholders. District staff will use the

remainder of the 2016-17 school year to prepare for the adoption process which includes soliciting

materials from publishers for consideration in the review and engaging our labor partners to identify
