VISIONS ANDREALITY.The art of making the impossible possible.
At the IAA , BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer cruised onto the
press conference podium in a -year-old BMW Roadster,
parking it right alongside the futuristic BMW Vision EfcientDynamics
concept car. Two very different vehicles sharing the same vision. The
hundreds of visitors who ocked to the BMW stand recognised
at a glance the two sports cars common traits of dynamism and
driving pleasure.
The BMW dominated motorsports in the s; an open-top
roadster, it was simply lighter and faster than its competitors. The
BMW Vision EfcientDynamics concept car meanwhile represents
where BMW is heading. Exceptionally light, extremely fast and
surprisingly efcient, it promises to deliver greater dynamism than
concepts from other manufacturers. At the same time, this pioneering
concept car combines compact-level emissions ( grams CO/km) with
the performance of a thoroughbred sports car ( hp, km/h
in . s). No other vehicle today demonstrates so clearly that it is
possible to increase sustainability and driving pleasure at one and the
same time. The concept car is thus impressive proof of the potential
for efciency that BMW EfcientDynamics represents.
The EfcientDynamics package of technologies has already given
BMW a denite edge over its competitors. No other manufacturer
has reduced CO
emissions across their entire eet so sustainably
from to while at the same time making their driving
dynamics so tangibly more enjoyable.

BMW petrol engines.
JOY BRINGS FORTH PERFORMANCE
OUT OF THIN AIR.
Performance, power delivery and high revving distinguish each and every BMW engine.
And all our engines are entirely shaped by the BMW EfcientDynamics philosophy which
aims at generating more power from less fuel.
This goal is achieved in a number of ways: in induction engines, the combustion chamber
is only partially lled with the fuel/air mix, particularly in the partial load range, so the engine
runs even more efciently. Engines featuring High Precision Injection have injectors that are
positioned right next to the spark plugs and inject tiny amounts of petrol into the combustion
chamber up to times in just a fraction of a second. This ultra-precise dosage ensures
optimal combustion, leading to maximum efciency and low emission values. Constant
revisions and innovations mean that these engines will always lead where others follow
in power, in efciency, and in economy. Our very latest contender is BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, which, in the latest six-
cylinder in-line petrol engines combines systems such as a TwinScroll turbocharger,
Valvetronic fully variable valve control and High Precision Injection, again resulting in an
impressive combination of increased power and reduced fuel consumption.
www.bmw.com/petrolengines
With High Precision Injection a small cloud of combustible mixture is injected precisely ontothe spark, in contrast to conventional injection (shown left). The rest of the combustion chamber
is lled primarily with air. The result is tangible: this lean combustion ensures signicantlyreduced consumption.

BMW diesel engines.
EFFICIENCY, DYNAMISM, DIESEL IT HAS TO BE BMW.BMW diesel engines are a pinnacle of engineering achievement. Extremely economical,
extremely powerful and extremely smooth, they are a particularly impressive embodiment of
the BMW EfcientDynamics philosophy, featuring on the one hand aluminium lightweight
construction as standard, and on the other uniting a host of innovative technologies. The latest
generation common rail injection is just one example. Generating up to bar whatever the
engine speed or amount of fuel being injected, the high injection pressure guarantees optimum
and efcient carburetion and combustion. This ultimately means impressively reduced
consumption right alongside BMWs characteristic engine torque, delivering a perceptibleboost to the overall driving experience.
Additionally, multiple pre-injections of minimal amounts of fuel help ensure that the engines run
exceptionally quietly and smoothly. With a particle lter as standard, most BMW diesel engines
already meet EU emission standards.
www.bmw.com/dieselengines
With new-generation common railinjection the amount of fuel required isinjected into the combustion chamber more
precisely and accurately than ever before. So
consumption and emissions are considerably
reduced, while engine performance,
renement and efciency are signicantly
escalated.

AHEAD OF FUTURE ENVIRONMENTAL
REGULATIONS.
BMW engineers not only take responsibility, they are driven by their dedication. For example in the
issue of reducing pollutants, their research has resulted in the development of BMW BluePerformance
technology for new diesel engines. This feature reduces the nitric oxides that every diesel engine
generates to a minimum.
In an additional storage catalytic convertor coated in precious metals including platinum and
palladium, a catalysis is triggered to store pollutants in the system. By running the engine on a
higher proportion of fuel for a short time the nitric oxides can be completely combusted. This means
that the EU emissions standard is already met in several BMW models even though its only due
to come into force in .*

Auto Start/Stop function.
THE FINE ART OFSWITCHING OFF.When the engine is switched off it neither consumes fuel nor produces emissions. A simple
principle that is at the heart of the Auto Start/Stop function, whereby the engine shuts itself
down as soon as the vehicle comes to a standstill and the driver dips the clutch and shifts into
neutral for example at trafc lights or in a jam. The engine restarts as soon as pressure is
reapplied to the clutch.
Especially in urban driving the Auto Start/Stop function makes use of even the briefest pauses to
save fuel. It is tted in almost all BMW four-cylinder engines with six-speed manual transmissions.
www.bmw.com/autostartstop
The Auto Start/Stop function symbol inthe Info Display shows when the engine has
been switched off to save you fuel. The engine
restarts as soon as you press the clutch again.

Air vent control.
JOY MAKES RESISTANCE
FUTILE.
Many athletes nowadays wear skin-tight gear that is designed to reduce drag. And for cars
too, aerodynamics are key to ensuring the vehicles motion is as energy efcient as possible.
Aerodynamic drag can be reduced by the overall shape of the car but also by features such as
the new air vent control, found in many BMW models, which reduces aerodynamic drag
especially at high speeds by closing the air vents in front of the radiator. The function is activated
in response to the driving situation and the temperature of the engine. The engine management
system continuously monitors whether the engine requires cooling air, and opens or closes
the vents accordingly. This has two gratifying effects: a shorter engine warm-up phase and
reduced fuel consumption.
www.bmw.com/airventcontrol
When the air vents are closed, air ows
are directed smoothly along the length of the
car, improving aerodynamics and reducing
consumption.

Intelligent lightweight construction.
LESS WEIGHT.MORE PLEASURE.The amount of weight to be m oved corresponds directly to the amount of energy required to
move it. Ever since the s BMW has incorporated this insight into vehicle construction,
continually rening it. One question that perpetually confronts our engineers is: where exactly
would a reduction in weight make sense and where not? The answer lies in intelligent
lightweight construction. This includes targeted use of ultra-light materials such as aluminium
and magnesium such as in the chassis, or the crankcase of the new six-cylinder in-line engines.
The positive effects of BMWs intelligent lightweight construction are manifest: less fuel
consumption and increased driving dynamics. These developments have also led to a signicant
increase in safety a fact that speaks volumes for the creative innovation that BMW engineers
are capable of. In sum: the weight reduction achieved by intelligent lightweight construction
means youll experience even greater driving pleasure.
www.bmw.com/lightweightconstruction
Ultra-light materials such as aluminium, when intelligently utilised, reduce weight and
fuel consumption.
Brake Energy Regeneration.
FULL OF ENERGY. EVEN WHEN BRAKING.
Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance.
LESS FRICTION.
LESS FUEL CONSUMPTION.
Every time you brake, you release kinetic energy energy which for a long time was not
capitalised upon by vehicle design. Brake Energy Regeneration uses this previously wasted
potential to reclaim electricity from the momentum produced when the driver takes their foot
off the accelerator or brakes. This power is then used to recharge the battery. This intelligent
energy management system frees up the generator and makes permanent running of the
alternator redundant. As a result, fuel consumption is reduced and performance increased
the essence of the BMW EfcientDynamics philosophy.
www.bmw.com/brakeenergyregeneration
While the car is in motion, the tyres are constantly changing shape, using up energy and fuel.
Thats why BMW uses tyres with reduced rolling-resistance. Optimised tyre construction
combined with the use of special materials in the road treads and side walls minimises
deformation, or exing, thereby reducing fuel consumption.
www.bmw.com/tyres
Traditionally the engine supplies the batterywith electrical energy consuming fuel in the
process.
In a BMW the battery is mostly rechargedusing kinetic energy.

Optimum Shift Indicator.
JOY TAKES ITUP A GEAR.Pleasure is always one step ahead. Thats why BMW is always keen to surge ahead in developing
environmentally-friendly technologies. The Optimum Shift Indicator is a prime example. It determines
the optimal moment to change gears and indicates the most appropriate gear in the drivers direct
line of vision. So you can enjoy your drive even m ore, without unnecessarily driving up your fuel
consumption.
As is characteristic of BMW, the system works intelligently for example recognising the powerful
acceleration needed when overtaking and adjusting its recommendations to suit the higher speed.
www.bmw.com/optimumshiftindicator
The Optimum Shift Indicator makes it easyto save fuel: a symbol indicates the most
efcient gear for the current driving situation.
Electric Power Steering.
STEERTOWARD EFFICIENCY.Every turn of the steering wheel requires energy. But why should energy be used when the
wheel isnt turning? Thats why BMW electric p ower steering is only active when its needed.
In contrast to conventional hydraulic steering systems, this BMW solution only uses energy
while an actual steering manoeu vre is underway. W hen the steering wheel is static for example
when driving at high speed along the motorway the electronic motor is inactive.
www.bmw.com/powersteering
. When the steering wheel is static noenergy is expended.

Researching and developing sustainable solutions.
THE BMW CONCEPT.BMW is currently considered a frontrunner
amongst car manufacturers in terms of
dynamism, efciency and sustainability. This
leading position is the result of decades of
research and thousands of inventions. And
nowhere is this achievement more patent than
in the BMW Museum, reopened in . The
ligree skeleton of the BMW Roadster is
mounted in the House of Technology like
a work of art. Designed in , this spectacularconstruction has a load-bearing framework
presciently made entirely of magnesium and
weighing just kilograms. Even then, BMW
saw lightweight construction as a key factor
in ensuring efciency and athleticism.
Many such innovations never come to light, but
at the BMW Museum engineering ingenuity is
given the pre-eminence it deserves. In the House
of the Series visitors come face to face with the
gleaming V engine of the BMW . In , this
engine was revolutionary it was the rst mass-produced engine ever to have a cylinder block
and cylinder heads in lightweight metal. Another
exhibition hall a veritable engineering hall of
fame showcases a series of engines that each
represent the very best of their generation. The
exhibits from the s are particularly strong on
consumption-reducing innovations: saw the
rst four valve six-cylinder in the BMW . CSL,in the rst ever petrol injection system was
introduced, followed a year later by the rst car to
feature an integrated overrun cut-off in the shape ofthe BMW . Si where the electronics took over to
interrupt fuel supply each time the vehicle began to
coast without acceleration.
Now this function is a matter of course. Back
then, however, it was a pioneering achievement
by BMW. On the third platform along in the
museums central wing a very special automobile
awaits: a remarkably early prototype for an
electric vehicle with low environmental impact.
Debuted in , the BMW E anticipated issuesthat are still highly relevant today. One novel
feature on the E was its capability to switch
between electrical power, hybrid drive or
a combustion engine. The only thing that
prevented it from going into serial production
at the time was a battery technology that was
not yet fully perfected, so BMW concentrated
for the time being on producing increasingly
economical combustion engines. The
innovations that followed are still present in
constantly rened form in todays BMW models.
Right next to the BMW Museum
is BMW World, where the range of
vehicles on display demonstrates
BMW engineers achievements
in the elds of sustainability,
efciency and driving pleasure.
Almost every vehicle on show is
the best in its class. No other
manufacturer offers such animpressive combination of low
fuel consumption and superior
driving characteristics. As of
spring , BMW models
emit no more than grams
of CO
per kilometre driven
models come in at under gram s. Over
the last years the BMW Group has managed
to reduce CO
emissions from its vehicles by
more than percent, and a further percent
cut is planned by , to be achieved partly
by implementing electric vehicles. A host
of independent studies have recognised the
ingenuity and foresight that have gone into
BMW EfcientDynamics. The Dow Jones
Sustainability Index has recognised the
achievement ve years in a row. Such gures
are further proof that no other brand is more
sparing with valuable resources. The technologies
behind BMW EfcientDynamics are illustrated
by a wealth of exhibits and animations in
BMW World. Take, for example, the BMW
TwinPower Turbo, the Valvetronic fully variablevalve control for petrol engines, or the remarkable
innovations of Variable Twin Turbo technology for diesel, which all contribute to increasedefciency in combustion engines. The innovative BMW ActiveHybrid drive, already available
in the X and in the Series, is a way forward for the future. It features a system of integrated
combustion and electric engines that are automatically activated as best suits the changing
situation on the road. The p roportion of the total mechanical power produced by each of
the two engines is continuously variable. The two-mode system in the ActiveHybrid X
stands out from conventional hybrid drives by offering not only a considerable reduction in
fuel consumption but also powerful dynamism to make driving that much more enjoyable.
So what will the future bring? As the BMW Vision EfcientDynamics concept car proves,
BMW has many more developments up its sleeve in the elds of EfcientDynamics,
ActiveHybrid, ActiveE and hydrogen technology. With a constant supply of new ideas and
technical breakthroughs, the problems of energy consumption and emissions will one day
be entirely settled. Until then BMW will continue to prove that its easy to embrace new
ways of thinking as long as more economical driving also means more driving pleasure.
Impressive evidence of this is provided by the . million BMW cars with EfcientDynamics
technology that were sold between and spring . Every single car, as well as
programs such as the EfcientDynamics driver training, inspires greater environmental
responsibility and palpably increase driving pleasure. The training teaches drivers how
to get the very best out of the top technologies featured in pioneering BMW vehicles.

BMW ActiveHybrid.
REDUCES EMISSIONS.
INCREASES DRIVING PLEASURE.
One way to achieve a reduction in fuel
consumption and consequently to lower
emissions is hybrid technology. But its
only when this technology is embodied in
a BMW that it also means more driving
pleasure.
In engine development a hybrid is the
combination of two different drive concepts:
usually a combustion engine and an electric
motor. BMWs own hybrid technology, called
BMW ActiveHybrid, adds to this combination
another vital element: sheer driving pleasure.
Attuned precisely to every model, each vehicleconcept is tted with the best suited hybrid
components from our Best of Hybrid
modular system.
In the new BMW ActiveHybrid X BMW has
combined the worlds rst Sports Activity
Coup with fully hybrid technology, promising
an exceptional driving experience with greatly
increased efciency at the same time. It all
centres on a two-mode active transmission
that can intelligently vary the interaction of the
two electric motors and the combustion
engine to suit the vehicles changing speed
and load. The new BMW X ActiveHybrid
always makes best use of the two options at
hand: it can be operated either on %
electric power, or only with power from the
combustion engine, or using a combination
of the two drive forms. Consumption and
emissions are thus reduced by up to %
accompanied by a perceptible boost to the
vehicles dynamism.
A hybrid model of the BMW agship Series
is now also in serial production the
BMW ActiveHybrid . In these models
BMW has achieved a high-level of everyday
practicality combined with a dynamism
unsurpassed by the competition, and an
increase in efciency of up to %. For the
rst time, innovative technologies ensure
that electrical functions such as the air
conditioning are maintained even when
the combustion engine is switched off
(stationary cooling).
So its not surprising that both these hybridmodels ActiveHybrid X and ActiveHybrid
deliver the best consumption values in the
segment. The BMW Concept Series
ActiveHybrid shows just how far-thinking a
pleasure-oriented approach can be. This
concept car can travel even long distances in
electric-only mode, producing no emissions.
A forward-looking energy management
system switches into this mode automatically:
it monitors the navigation route, situational
vehicle data and route prole to calculate the
most effective way to combine the electric
motor and the combustion engine.

ELECTRIFYING
TIMES.
What is project i? We are currently developinga vehicle to meet the specic challenges of therapidly growing megacities. The product itself, however, is only one aspect of our work. Theproject leaves scope for blue-sky thinking to plannew product processes, sales models, vehicleconcepts and mobility packages.
What details about the vehicle are known? Anelectric motor is a great advantage in a citycar: plenty of energy can be regenerated frombraking, and the average distances driven areshort. Customers experiences with the MINI Eshow that an everyday range of km is perceivedas perfectly adequate. And a city-based vehicledenitely needs four seats and a decent-sizedluggage compartment. Additionally, a BMW Groupvehicle has to be top-of-the-range in every aspect:
in the driving experience, in quality, in safety andin networking.
What exactly is meant by networking? A carthat is to be used mainly in cities should ideallyfeature trafc guidance systems and be able tocommunicate with the infrastructure. Its intelligentnavigation system will as a matterof course not onlylocate the nearest available charging station but willalso be able to reserve it foryoure stimated time ofarrival. The driver can check the current battery levelorthe loc ation of the nearest charging station viamobile phone. And it will be possible to activate theheating and airc onditioning systems the same way. With ourBMW Concept ActiveE concept carwehave already shown what this kind of smartphoneapplication could look like.
What kind of EfcientDynamics doesproject i involve? EfcientDynamicsdemonstrates BMWs capacity to meet thechallenges of the future. Its our proof thatreduced consumption does not have to mean aless enjoyable driving experience and the sameapplies to project i.New developments in EfcientDynamics are beingworked on all the time, and we will of course adoptall its suitable technologies in our products too.
Youre driving along, enjoying classic BMW
dynamism and the only thing coming out
the exhaust is steam. In , a whole new
element was added to on-road dynamism. After
decades of intensive research, BMW presented
the worlds rst every-day luxury saloon powered
by water: the BMW Hydrogen . It is built around
a combustion engine that can switch on demand
between petrol mode and hydrogen power.
The hydrogen tank is another typical example
of ne BMW engineering. Designed with
maximum safety in mind, it can withstand
extreme strain and stores the liquid hydrogen
at -C.
www.bmw.com/hydrogen
Are you researching any more new vehicleconcepts? BMW manufactures motorbikes as wellas cars ourhighly innovative cityscooter BMW Cis alreadyout and about. So well also be looking intosimilarconcepts as part ofprojecti.
Lightweight construction is important inelectric vehicles because of the heavybatteries. What is project is approach to theissue? One solution is carbon bre-reinforcedpolymer (CRP) a high-tech material mostly usedtill now in motor racing and in aviation. We arecollaborating with a partner company to developspecial CRP products for the a utomotiveindustry.
Do customers expect BMW-level drivingcharacteristics even in an urban electricvehicle? We know that customers appreciategood driving dynamics and plenty of agility evenin city driving. And these characteristics are partof the BMW brand promise. Customers even ratethe quiet acceleration possible with ourelectric
motoras particularly impressive.
Sustainability is a key consideration inproject i. What aspects are you focussing on?We are examining the issue of sustainability atevery single stage: the supplierchain, production, transport, materials, recycling, sales and logistics. We have the opportunity to recongure the entirelifecycle of the vehicle. For example, how to structurethe manufacturing process with an eye to theefcient use of energy at every stage, and how toavoid particularly energy-intensive processes.
Can you make any predictions about theprice? We do of course have some idea ofwhat a car like this can cost, but its unrealisticto determine a price at this stage. The mostexpensive component is the battery and itsenergy management. And here were just startingout with new technologies where we need tocalculate their prices according to the appropriatequantities.
