A trained, equipped and engaged board of directors can mean the difference between effectiveness and failure for nonprofit organizations. For more than twenty-five years, HandsOn Jacksonville has mobilized, equipped and placed leaders as interns on area nonprofit boards. Blueprint for Leadership was launched in 1988 as Project Blueprint in response to a Kellogg Foundation study which indicated a startling disparity between the percentage of income given by minorities to nonprofit organizations and the representation of minorities on governing boards of the same organizations. to The program originally identified, recruited, trained and placed minority professionals on nonprofit boards. The program experienced such tremendous success that in 1997 it evolved to Blueprint for Leadership, a program that reflects the full diversity of our Northeast Florida population. Since the program’s inception, nearly 900 people have graduated from Blueprint for Leadership and have interned on more than 50 local nonprofit boards of directors.

2014 Cohort Project

The 2014 Blueprint for Leadership cohort chose River Region Human Services as the recipient of their service project.

For more than 40 years, River Region Human Services has been rebuilding families and restoring communities. One program provides housing for women in recovery and their children. While they receive funding cover housing and therapy, there often isn’t enough to supply the personal touches that make the housing feel homey and welcoming.

The Blueprint cohort tackled three common areas shared by families, doing thorough room renovations that included cleaning, painting and furnishing - and they provided books and toys geared to afford moms the opportunity to engage, connect and play with their children. In addition, they renovated the outdoor areas to add furniture for adults and kids, gazebos, plants, a shade canopy and more. They even brought a hose and sprinkler for the kids to enjoy playing in during hot summer days.

To raise funds for their project, the cohort held a yard sale and reached out to local businesses. They raised nearly $8,000.00 in cash and in-kind donations to benefit River Region Human Services.

Renee Harden, Associate Vice-President of Co-occurring Services could not be happier. She said this infusion of love and support will boost morale and bring energy and hope to the residents on the difficult road to recovery by making their living quarters feel less institutional and more like a home.
