“I think initially the main thing that attracted us to Long Elms was the fact that nobody really knows that it’s here,” says John. “I’ve lived in the area for over twenty-five years, and until it came up for sale I hadn’t a clue that the house was tucked away in this lovely location; it’s wonderfully secluded, incredibly peaceful and yet everything that we could possibly want or need is practically on the doorstep.”

The pretty house has the appearance of a classic and traditional thatched cottage that wouldn’t look out of place on the cover of a box of delicious clotted cream fudge, however surprisingly the interior is light and airy with all the principle rooms situated to expose the majestic views and the best of the natural sunlight.

The reception hall offers a warm and welcoming introduction to the home with a roaring log fire set in a full height stone chimney breast with oak beam mantle, slate hearth and log storage, with sand stone flooring and underfloor heating which is continued throughout the ground floor. The open-plan kitchen/living/dining room is such a pleasant room and it is clear to see that the family spend a lot of time here, with plenty of room for a large dining room and comfortable lounging furniture. The wall to wall box bay window with French doors that lead onto the terrace connects the home with the gardens perfectly.

The kitchen is fitted with traditional wall, base and display units with built-in shelving, basket storage and wine rack. With china Bosh and Aga which sits snuggly with in the alcove.

The lounge has the pleasure of windows to the front and rear, Adams style fireplace and two sets of double doors leading into the sun lounge. This charming room is spacious, semi-circular shaped with wall to wall windows and French doors leading onto the gardens with the countryside beyond, it is bathed in natural sunlight and offers a peaceful retreat. step inside

Also, to the ground floor there is a home office which is set up with ample power points and internet connection, there is an external stable door to the front which would be ideal for someone who works from home but doesn’t want work to have an impact on family life, keeping business and pleasure separate. The spacious utility room also doubles as a hobby room with ample space, shelving and storage as well as laundry appliances. The cloakroom adds a touch of glamour with attractive tiles and quality fixtures.

The master bedroom has the pleasure of a partially vaulted ceiling and doors that lead onto a semi-circular balcony which has plenty of room for a table and chairs or comfortable sun lounging furniture, it is positioned to enjoy the views and the fresh country air and provides the perfect place for morning coffee or a delightful nightcap.

The master bedroom also has the pleasure of dressing and vanity area, built-in wardrobes and a sumptuous en suite bathroom with free standing Victorian style bath, his and hers vanity units and separate shower cubicle. Long Elm is a beautiful thatched cottage that occupies a prime location on the edge of the village of Bishopston. “When

we bought the house it was derelict,” says John.

“The roof was full of holes and the garden had

effectively grown into the house, but it was

obvious that it had great potential. It took us

almost three years to complete the renovations,

but it’s now a really lovely family home that has

been built to modern standards, but which lies

beneath the skin of the original cottage.”

“The part of the house to which we all seem to naturally gravitate is the lovely kitchen, dining and living area,” says Maria, “it’s the real hub of our home. One end

is almost completely glazed so the room is wonderfully light and

bright, and French doors lead straight out onto a paved terrace,

which is a really pleasant place to sit out or entertain friends.” “I

also love the more formal lounge,” adds John, “it’s a great place to

escape to if you want a bit of peace and quiet.”

“We altered the construction of the house from timber to brick and stone,” continues John, “so it’s now much more solid and very well insulated,

and we have also changed the layout of the house to make it more conducive to

modern living.”

“I think the main thing that I shall miss about living here is the setting,” says John, “you can stand out in the garden and enjoy the views in total silence, it’s wonderfully peaceful, and yet if you need a pint of milk or a loaf of bread it’s just a short stroll to the convenience store.
