BIOLOGY CATALYST WEDNESDAY, 3/19/14

1. Visit the class website (http://aofscience.weebly.com) and answer the “CATALYST” question(s).

Questions:2. Why can you consider photosynthesis and cellular

respiration as "opposite reactions"? Explain.

3. Where does the energy in an ATP molecule come from?

P3 BIOLOGY AGENDA 3/19/14

1. Catalyst2. Announcements

1. CONGRATULATIONS! This week is REDEMPTION WEEK! Out of the goodness of my heart, you will have this whole week and the weekend to make up any 3rd MP work you missed. (DUE March 25, 2014. If you can’t get this done, there is a strong possibility that there is no hope.)

3. Glycolysis Review4. Cellular Respiration WebQuest5. POSTER TIME!

BIOLOGY GPOINTS

P3: 53 (on time)

P7: 47 (on time, focused)

Your class can earn class points if:everyone in class:

• Comes to class quietly and on time • Stays focused and on task during

class• Leaves classroom neat and

organized• Students are teaching other

students• Majority of class participates• Follows all classroom expectations

and procedures• And more…

Page 4: Biology Catalyst Wednesday, 3/19/14

P3 OBJECTIVES 3/19/14

We will be able to 1. Explain how glucose is broken

down in glycolysis.2. Create a visual aid to help

ourselves remember cellular respiration.

Page 5: Biology Catalyst Wednesday, 3/19/14

EXOTHERMIC VS. ENDOTHERMIC REACTIONS

Exothermic• RELEASES heat to the surroundings (feels hot)

• Creating a chemical bond releases energy in the form of heat

Endothermic • ABSORBS heat from the surroundings (feels cold)

• Breaking a chemical bond requires energy

Page 6: Biology Catalyst Wednesday, 3/19/14

ENTHALPY

• Enthalpy is the amount of heat used or released in a system (chemical reaction) at constant pressure.

• Symbolized by ΔH• Unit is the joule (J)• For exothermic reactions: ΔH is NEGATIVE

• For endothermic reactions: ΔHIs POSITIVE

GLYCOLYSIS

Glycolysis (glyco = sugar; lysis = breaking)

GOAL is to break down glucose into pyruvate molecules.

Page 10: Biology Catalyst Wednesday, 3/19/14

DURING CLASSWORK TIME

1. Stay focused on the assignments you are given.

2. Keep the noise level down.

3. Stay in your seats.4. Ask THREE before you ask

ME.5. You may put earphones on

and listen to music quietly as you do your work. (Pick a playlist and stick with it!)

6. You must make progress at the end of the period.

TASK:

1. Cellular Respiration WebQuest

2. POSTER!

GLYCOLYSIS SUMMARY

• Breaks 1 glucose to 2 pyruvate molecules

• Produces 4 ATPs and 2 NADH

PULSE CHECK

Turn to a partner and discuss the following questions. Be ready to share out.

1. What is the goal of cellular respiration? Glycolysis?

2. How are eating and cellular respiration related?

Page 18: Biology Catalyst Wednesday, 3/19/14

CELLULAR RESPIRATION POSTER TIME!

1. In your PLGs, create a poster with your assigned topic.

2. Everything must be drawn. Pictures CANNOT be printed out.

3. Everyone must be involved. (Researching, editing, coloring, gathering supplies, cutting, gluing, etc.)

4. Be sure to the images and writing can be seen from across the room! These may be helpful during quizzes…

5. You will be graded on level of productivity, neatness, and scientific accuracy.

6. Before you start the poster, show me a rough draft on a regular sized paper.

Page 19: Biology Catalyst Wednesday, 3/19/14

POSTER TOPICS

• ATP• Glycolysis• Pyruvate Oxidation• Fermentation• Krebs Cycle• Electron Transport Chain

NOTE: In your posters, be sure to somehow emphasize the FINAL PRODUCTS of each process.

OBJECTIVES 3/11/14

We will be able to 1. Describe the basic structure of an

atom.2. Explain the difference between an

ionic and covalent bond.3. Explain the importance of chemical

concepts in biology.

ATOMS AND ELEMENTS

• Atoms are the basic unit of matter.

•Nucleus: Contains protons and neutrons

•Electrons: Move around the nucleus

• An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into other substances.

BONDING

• Atoms combine by bonding:•Covalent bonds: Electrons are shared.

• Ionic bonds: Electrons are transferred.

• Molecule: Two or more atoms joined by covalent bonds

• Compound: Substance composed of atoms of two or more different elements

Page 40: Biology Catalyst Wednesday, 3/19/14

COVALENT BONDING = ELECTRONS ARE SHARED

Page 41: Biology Catalyst Wednesday, 3/19/14

IONIC BONDING = ELECTRONS ARE TRANSFERRED

When atoms form ionic bonds, the positively charged atom is attracted to the negatively charged atom.

Page 46: Biology Catalyst Wednesday, 3/19/14

MACROMOLECULES = ESSENTIAL FOR

LIVING

Page 47: Biology Catalyst Wednesday, 3/19/14

CARBOHYDRATES

•All have formula: CnH2nOn

•Classified as •Monosaccharides (one)•Disaccharides (two)•Polysaccharids (many)

•Function in humans: Energy storage

Glucose (monosaccharide)

CELLULAR RESPIRATION RAP/SONG PROJECT

1. Choose your favorite rap song. (If you don’t like rap or hip hop music, you can choose another type of song.)

2. Choose a topic from cellular respiration. (ATP, Glycolysis, Krebs Cycle, or Electron Transport Chain.)

3. Write lyrics that incorporates all the main concepts of the process you chose.

4. You may record yourself singing/rapping the song, make a music video, or perform the song live in class. You MUST provide with a TYPED copy of the lyrics.

5. You will be evaluated on creativity and scientific accuracy.
