DESCRIPTION

S.Khuntia, Ex-Chief Scientist of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Govt. of India at IMMT, Bhubaneswar, India has developed a variety of Innovative Technologies during 1978 to 2012 in areas of Coal combustion, Renewable energy, Drinking water, Agro-machinery, Non-farm technology and Rural technology for industrial & societal development in India. Most of his invented technologies are disseminated/ commercialized extensively to enhance energy efficiency & productivity, reduce of pollution & drudgery and generate employment & improve quality of life to obtain economic, environmental & societal benefits to people of India.

7. Significant contributions:

i) Academic: (1976 – 77) Faculty in National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, teaching undergraduate engineering students and was also associated in an R & D Project on “Prevention of contamination of coal dust in the cooling tower pond” sponsored by Rourkela Steel Plant during year 1976-77 at NIT, Rourkela, Odisha, India.

ii) Industrial: (1977 – 78) Detail engineering design & drawings of following commercial products which were

fabricated and utilized in different projects of OCC Ltd, Govt of Orissa during year 1977-78:

(a) 10 Ton capacity Electric Overhead Travelling Crane. (b) 10 M X 6 M size radial sluice gate for irrigation dam. (c) 50 Ton capacity electric operated hoist, (d) Heavy steel structures for Talcher Power Plant, Govt of Odisha.

iii) Research & Development : (1978 – 2012)

Invention/ Development of 28 numbers of need based products for immediate benefits to industry, society and for the prosperity of common people of India in different fields; such as Coal combustion, Renewable energy, Agro-machineries, Rural technology, Drinking water and Equipment development etc. Most of the products have been commercialized and disseminated in large numbers in different parts of India under many National programme. Details of achievements are mentioned in chapter – II.

1) Pam Davar Basu Award bestowed by Hon’ble Vice-President of India Late K. L. Narayanan during 1994 - for invention of Improved cook stoves for reduction of biomass consumption, smoke, pollution & drudgery of women & children as well as improvement of quality of life of rural people of India.

2) OREDA Award bestowed by Chief Minister of Orissa, Late Biju Pattanaik on Orissa Day, 1st April,1991 - for invention of “Harsha” Multifuel Cook Stove.

3) Rajiv Gandhi Samman on Rajiv Gandhi Urja Diwas, 2006, bestowed by Minister of

Science & Technology, Govt. of Orissa for significant inventions in Renewable energy.

4) IDCOL Award honored by the Chief Secretary, Govt. of Orissa during 1998 - for development of Coal fired Billet reheating continuous furnace for Re-rolling Mill, Hirakud (IDCOL) replacing petroleum furnace oil.

18. Trainings organized for mass production & dissemination of rural technologies:

• More than 500 village potters / artisans, 2000 village youths, NGOs etc, and about 1000 housewives were trained for construction, operation and maintenance of energy efficient improved cook stoves in NPIC programme, sponsored by MNES, Govt. of India.

• More than 1000 farmers, artisans etc were trained for operation & maintenance of various Rural technologies; such as agricultural implements, energy saving devices, non-farm technologies, Cardamom drier, Terafil water filter, improved cook stoves, driers etc. in rural sector.

• More than 50 batches of training rendered to more than 500 entrepreneurs on mass production, use & maintenance of various technologies during transfer of technologies from IMMT to the licensees.

20. Disaster management:

(I) Terafil water filters installed in cyclone & flood affected areas for supply of clean drinking water to the victims through CSIR-IMMT:

(a) During supper cyclone in Orissa: 1500 sets of Terafil water filters were installed cyclone affected areas for supply of drinking water to the victims, 1999-2000.

(b) During Flood in Bihar: 2000 sets of Terafil water filters were installed in affected areas for supply of drinking water to the victims, 2008.

(c) During Cyclone in West Bengal: 2000 sets of Terafil water filters were installed in affected areas for supply of drinking water to the victims, 2008.

(d) During Sever flood of Odisha:

1500 sets of Terafil water filters distributed among flood victims of Odisha for supply of drinking water during September 2011.

(II) 6500 sets of ‘Harsha” multi-fuel community cook stoves installed in Supper cyclone affected areas of Odisha for community cooking of food for the victims, 1999-2000 through MNRE & OREDA.

(III) About 10,000 sets of Terafil water filters installed in Super cyclone &

flood affected areas of Odisha for supply of clean drinking water to the victims, 1999-2000 through UNICEF & OXFAM.

(IV) About 3,000 sets of Terafil water filters installed in flood affected areas

of Andhra Pradesh & Karnataka for supply of clean drinking water to the victims, 2009-10 through ART of LIVING (AOL).

(V) Assisted many Govt. Depts and NGOs for dissemination of improved

cook stoves and Terafil water filters among the victims during emergent situations.

Completed 100 Kg/hr pilot Coal fired Cyclone Furnace was developed; 2,0000C flame temperature achieved from low grade crushed coal (40% ash), ash melted inside furnace, 90% ash removed as molten slag. High temperature ash free gas suitable for MHD power generation and other thermal applications replacing oil by coal.

2. Rectangular-Jet Slurry Pump

Completed- Implemented in high pressure continuous autoclave plant supplied to IMMT, Bhubaneswar by UDHE GMBH, Germany, and in Grain Winnower ( classifier )

Mixing and pumping of solids with liquid at high concentration at any delivery pressure, through a rectangular liquid jet having high aspect ratio. This Slurry Jet Pump replaces conventional centrifugal slurry pump and agitator, and save energy. It is also used as an efficient dredger and classifier.

3. Continuous Billet Reheating Coal fired furnace replacing furnace oil (6 Ton / Hr. capacity, continuous rating)

Completed- Implemented in Hirakud Re-rolling Mill, IDCOL, Govt. of Orissa, Hirakud, Orissa

Low cost down draft high temperature tunnel furnace for continuous reheating of steel billets at 12000c through coal. Replaced petroleum oil and saved more than 50% heating cost for reheating steel billets for rolling in to different sections.

Advanced coal fired furnace sintering chromites ore fines into blocks at 10000 C temperatures, to replace furnace oil and reduce sintering cost.

More than 1.0 Million units improved multi-fuel cook stoves were installed during 1991 to 2005 under many national programme, resulting to saving of 1.0 Million ton of firewood worth of Rs. 100/- crores/ year, Employment generation: 4.0 million man days, reduction of Smoke, pollution & greenhouse gas in households: 1.0 million ton CO2 gas & 0.2 million ton CO gas.

Completed- Propagated under National Programme of Improved Chulha of Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), Govt. of India, OREDA, Govt. of Orissa, Govt. Departments., Agencies, NGO, Panchayati Raj, DRDAs, Forest dept. etc. in the country. Technology is in public domain.

2.0 to 3.0 Million units chulhas implemented during 1991 to 2005, resulting to saving of 2.0 Million tons of firewood worth of Rs.200/-crores/year, Employment generation: 2.0 Million man days, reduction of smoke, pollution, health hazard. Reduction of greenhouse gas: 2.0 million ton CO2 & 0.4 million ton CO gas into environment per year.

9. Multipurpose Bukhari ( Cook stove – cum – Space Heater )

Completed- Disseminated in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Sikkim.

Combined operation of cooking & space heating carried out together without release of smoke & hot gas into living place, saves 70% of firewood and clean heating like electric operated. Suitable for efficient room heating & cooking in cold & hill areas.

Suitable for baking of bread, bun, cake, etc using biomass in smoke free condition, and saves 80% fuel consumption, preheating totally eliminated unlike traditional bakery ovens. 50% processing cost reduced.

Completed- Disseminated in Orissa, Meghalaya, Sikkim and other parts of the country. Technology transferred to many MSMEs & Govt. depts.

Efficient & fast drying of various food materials, grains, spices, fish, meat, vegetables, industrial products etc in a clean and smoke free environment at high thermal efficiency (80%) using biomass as fuel. It replaces electricity & petroleum oil for drying.

Used for efficient threshing of paddy with reduced labour & grain loss, resulting to increasing yield of paddy @ 1.0 lakh ton/year due to minimized grain loss. Completed- Disseminated more than 2,50,000 units of Terafil water filter are in Orissa through OREDA, UNICEF, OXFAM, RWS&S, W&CD, RD, Health, PHE etc of various State Govts, many NGOs, and private consumers. TERAFIL technology is being popularized in many parts of the country in BHARAT NIRMAN YOJANA & JALMANI for purification of iron contaminated water. Technology is being transferred extensively. Technology licensed to 165 entrepreneurs till October 2012.

Low cost household and community water filtration & treatment devices operate without electricity. The filtration media is a porous burnt red clay disc called TERAFIL and produced by micro/ small industries using cheap materials. It purifies highly turbid raw water or iron contaminated ground water into bacteria free, clean & safe drinking water. Various sizes of portable, online & community water filter are developed to mitigate drinking water problem through people’s participation. More than 5.0 million liters/day Terafil purified drinking water being supplied at present.

1. Rural Technology for societal benefits:

• Research & Development undertaken by the undersigned for invention/ development of

need based low cost & efficient technologies in the field of renewable energy, drinking

water, agro-machineries, non-farm sector, artisan technology and equipment

development to enhance energy efficiency & productivity, reduce of pollution & drudgery

and generate employment & improve quality of life to obtain economic, environmental &

societal benefits to people of the country.

• Most of the technologies developed by the undersigned converted to commercial

products, which are produced & marketed by MSMEs through various National

programme of State & Govt of India in different states.

• The undersigned has rendered extensive post R&D trainings & demonstrations on mass

production, use, maintenance and awareness for rapid dissemination of the

technologies. The beneficiaries were policy makers, Govt officials, field engineers &

technicians, entrepreneurs, MSMEs, NGOs, SHGs, artisans, rural youths, farmers,

housewives etc.

• The undersigned has provided necessary scientific & technical supports to different

Ministries of Central & State Govts as member of various committees during extensive

petroleum oil by coal in various metallurgical, chemical & mineral industries to

maximize economy due to increase in cost of furnace oil.

• Novelty of coal fired furnaces are use of lump coal, rapid & complete combustion of fuel

with reduced pollution, easy operation, low cost and suitable for continuous & batch

operation.

• Advanced Jet pump with flat jet developed by the undersigned for solid-liquid mixing &

pumping slurry without rotary parts in desired high pressure & solid concentration. It

replaces conventional slurry pump & agitator in hydraulic transportation & maximizes

economy.
