Purpose of Policy This Policy sets out the agreed admissions procedures for Bingley Grammar School.
Admissions at age 11• Pupils will be admitted at age 11 without reference
to ability or aptitude. Clear priority will be given to pupils drawn from the School’s Priority Admission Area, which is largely based on the former Bingley UDC of 1974, but which incorporates amendments agreed in consultation with Education Bradford for admissions from Sept 2005. (see notes).
• Where the number of applicants for admission exceeds the number of places available, the following criteria will be applied, in the order set out below, to decide which children to admit.
• Children in public care.
• Children who live within the Priority Admission Area, who have an older brother or sister attending from the same address and who will still be attending the school at the time of admission, ie in Years 7-10. (in area siblings).
• Children who live in the Priority Admissions Area.
• Children who live outside the Priority Admission Area, who have an older brother or sister attending from the same address and who will still be attending the school at the time of admission, ie in Years 7-10. (out of area siblings).
• Children who live outside the School’s Priority Admission Area.
Where demand exceeds places in any one of the above criteria, the distance between home and the main entrance of the school building, measured by a straight line, will be used to decide who is to be given a place, with places being awarded to those living nearest.
These criteria may be overridden and a place offered, where the parents’ preference is based on special medical reasons, deemed essential by an independent professional recommendation from the child’s paediatrician/consultant.
Staff children: The school reserves the right to offer places to the children of permanent staff in “skills shortage areas” in order to attract and retain those staff and benefit the pupils in the school. They will not be included in the total admission number.
A child with a statement of special educational needs which names Bingley Grammar School, will be admitted without reference to the above oversubscription criteria.
Admission Policy for entry into the Sixth Form Year 11 students may proceed into Year 12 where the course entry requirements are met. Full details of these can be found in the Sixth Form Prospectus. Students not currently on roll, who wish to join the sixth form, must complete an application form and return it to the school no later than 5th Sept for admission in that academic year.
Notes• The amended priority area now excludes
Cullingworth and includes East Morton as far west as Swine Lane. This includes properties accessed from Swine Lane in the Waterside Fold development only.
• The terms “sisters” and “brothers” refer to children who reside with the same family at the same address. Foster children and step brothers and sisters living with the same family are included.
• Residence refers to the pupil’s permanent home at the date of admission. Where a child lives with parents with shared responsibility, it is for the parents to determine which address is to be used for the allocation process.
• Any available places following the initial allocation will be given on the basis of the distance from the main entrance of the school to the home, measured in a straight line.
• Pupils will not be admitted above the published admission number for the school unless exceptional circumstances apply.
• If an application for admission has been turned down by the Governors, parents have the right to appeal against this decision. The relevant appeal forms can be obtained by contacting the Admissions Secretary at the School.

Regular and punctual attendance is essential.
Except through illness, no student should be absent from school without the permission of the Headteacher in advance. Any absence is undesirable, because it may severely disrupt the student’s programme of learning and assessment. If absence from school is required, a request must be made in writing to the Attendance Officer and will only be granted in exceptional circumstances.
Parents are requested to notify the School of any absence as soon as possible and to send a note of explanation to the Form Tutor on the pupil’s return. The School will then classify the absence as authorised or not. Pupils should copy up any work they have missed. In the event of possible long illness, work will, where appropriate, be set for the student to complete at home.
The School has an automated system for contacting parents on the first day of a child’s absence, unless notification of the reason for absence has been given in advance.
AttendanceFURTHER DETAILS OF THESE AND ALL SCHOOL POLICIES CAN BE FOUND ON THE SCHOOL WEBSITE
The following documents are available for inspection at the School. Application should be made directly to the Headteacher’s secretary.
• Statutory instruments, articles and other circulars and memoranda sent to the School by the Department for Education and Skills.
• The most recent OFSTED inspection report on the School.
• The schemes of work and syllabi used in the School.
• The most recent annual report to parents made by the Governing Body.
• The Governors’ policy statements.
• The School’s Complaints Procedure.
If a copy of any document is requested a charge may be made to cover the cost.
Parents also have a statutory right to see most records made about students. Records which are exempt from this right include information from a third party, references to institutions of Higher Education and court reports.
The law requires that fifteen days notice should be given by a parent who wishes to access any of the information or records referred to above.

We believe that all students have a right to equal educational opportunities in order to achieve their full potential.
The Learning Support Team, in partnership with parents and other agencies, carefully assess and regularly review the special educational needs of students, developing Individual Educational Plans and providing support where required. Students’ special needs are initially identified during liaison meetings with our feeder schools and transitional programmes are held in the summer term.
Support for students is usually provided within the normal classroom and may include specific advice to subject teachers both directly and through a student’s Individual Educational Plan or one-to-one and small group support from a Support Assistant.
The Learning Support Faculty consists of an experienced and dedicated team who work very closely with students and teaching staff on a daily basis.
The Achievement Centre is integral to our aim of ensuring access to a curriculum appropriate to students’ individual needs.
In the attempt to enable students to acquire knowledge, skills and a responsible attitude and behaviour with regard to sexual activity and relationships, Bingley Grammar School aims to provide a worthwhile educational experience for all its students which will present opportunities:
• to help students to consider the importance of self-restraint, dignity, respect for themselves and for others, acceptance of responsibility, sensitivity towards the needs and views of others, loyalty and fidelity;
• to enable students to recognise the physical, emotional and moral implications, and risks, of certain types of behaviour and to accept that both sexes should behave responsibly in sexual matters;
• to support the personal development and social skills of the students;
• to ensure that students have an understanding of their own and others’ sexuality;
• to enjoy relationships based upon mutual respect and responsibility which are free from abuse and exploitation;
• to provide information and knowledge which will counteract prejudice and ignorance;
• to develop an understanding of risk and to promote strategies for personal safety;
• to enable students to be aware of the sources of help and acquire the skills and confidence to use them.
RE and Collective Worship make an important contribution to a central aim of the School - to promote the spiritual, moral and cultural development of its students. Both RE and Collective Worship seek to prepare students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life in a multi-cultural society.
RE is taught to all students in the School in accordance with the Bradford Agreed Syllabus for RE. The schemes of work are not designed to promote a particular set of religious beliefs, but rather to help students to develop their own personal values and beliefs.
Collective Worship takes the form of formal morning assemblies. These acts of worship are ‘wholly or mainly of a broadly Christian character’, and encourage students to reflect on their own belief and practices.
The School recognises that under the Education Act 1988, parents have the legal right to withdraw their children from RE lessons and Collective Worship on religious grounds.
