A Word from the HeadteacherAs a busy term, full of learning and growth draws to an end, we were lucky enough to celebrate with our students past and present last night at our Annual Awards Ceremony.Students and their families were invited to share in each other’s success and collect certificates for their summer exams, both GCSE and A Level. It was lovely to see so many smiling faces as their hard work was recognised formally during the evening. It was also nice to hear from our 2016-17 Year 13 students who are doing so well at their chosen universities.I would like to wish all our students and their families, as well as our hard working staff a pleasant & peaceful Christmas break. We look forward to seeing you all on January 4th.

Mr Luke WestonHeadteacher

Yr 7 DiscoOn the 7th of December, Alice Stead in Yr 13, helped by a group of sixth formers, held a Christmas disco to raise money for St George’s Crypt, a charity that helps homeless individuals in the local area. The night was full of dancing, photo booth silliness and delicious treats - all the Year 7s that came along had a great time dancing the night away. The Macarena was definitely a favourite for the Year 7s and sixth formers alike! When people weren’t enjoying the buns that had been made for the event, they were getting some funky pictures taken in the photo booth. There was also a competition to guess the number of sweets in the jar!The next day, the sixth formers sold the remaining buns and treats in the Hills making sure they raised as much money as possible for their chosen charity. The event made an astonishing £465 and it couldn’t have been done without the help of all the sixth formers involved before, during and after the disco. Thanks to Mrs Dean, Mr Foster, Mr Ashley, Mrs Roberts and Mrs Faunch for coming along to support the event.

Alice would like to pass on a massive thank you to everyone involved, saying,“I am so happy to say I am part of such an amazing school community!”Thanks to Alice and the sixth form team who made this year’s Year 7 disco a great success.

Yr 7 Journalism ClubAt the beginning of term Miss Broaders and Miss Powell decided to start up a

Journalism Club for students in Years 7 & 8. In the group students are able to write articles based on events and people - during October the group wrote pieces looking at Remembrance Day, World War I and World War II.Mrs Broaders said,“The young journalists have been creating some fantastic work since the club started. In November, the group arranged an interview with Mr Weston and the resulting collaborative article makes for interesting reading!”

The group meets every Tuesday after school in G2 with Mrs Broaders why not come along and get involved?

The Wonderful World of WestonDropping books, a love of rocks, “to infinity and beyond”Have you ever wondered, what Mr Weston does on a day to day basis? Well, look no further! We have found out some exclusive facts on our head teacher. After a busy day at school, we went down to the head teacher’s office and asked some questions that you would never ask! Read on to find out what we discovered…What do you enjoy about being a head teacher?Mr Weston said I like the way that I can get involved in lots of different areas of the school. He enjoys his job most in the summer when the kids get their brilliant GCSE results or great A level results and go off to university.

What subject do you teach and where did you start your teaching career?Mr Weston’s teaching career started in Southend which is in glorious Essex and he taught Geography. He told us that his favourite subject at school was Geology. One day he was caught fixing a computer and from then on he was the an IT teacher.

What type of books do you read? Have you got a favourite? He has a couple of books on the go at the same time. Depending on how he is feeling and what he wants to read he chooses between fiction and non-fiction. Every single night without fail Mr Weston reads for half an hour but he had to buy a kindle because he kept dropping books on his head when he fell asleep! His favourite book is The Joy of Essex.

How did you become a head teacher and how could someone become a head teacher? He became a head teacher by working up through the ranks. At Bingley Grammar he has had three jobs: assistant head, deputy head and head teacher. Mr Weston explained that you had to sit exams to achieve headship qualifications which surprised us.If you weren’t a head teacher, what would you be?Can I have loads of money to stay at home and play on my Xbox? questioned Mr Weston, before going on to surprise us by saying he would have loved to have done something in the field of oceanography. He said it would have been a nice easy life doing research at university. How would you describe working at Bingley Grammar?Mr Weston said it’s a great place to work because we have great kids and every day is different. On our way out of his office, we spotted a Buzz Lightyear figure so we couldn’t resist asking why he had it. Surprisingly, Mr Weston is a big Toy Story fan and keeps Buzz (a

Mr Weston with the writing team: Jacob, Sophie and Samuel.

collectable item) in his office! What we enjoyed the most:One of the most interesting things that we found out about Mr Weston was what he would be if he wasn’t a head teacher. It was interesting to find out because it’s something we did not expect and shows us what he is interested in. Mr Weston also said his favourite lesson at school was learning about rocks. He seemed very relaxed talking to us because he talked about his favourite book and took us though the answers in a lot of detail. How it has helped us:It helped because we had so many questions and found out the answers in a lot of detail. It also helped us because he told us some of the things he would do in the future. One of the things he would like to do more is more assemblys - but with so many other teachers and visiting speakers he struggles to get a slot! Fingers crossed he gets one soon!

L&G Everyday Money WorkshopsOn Tuesday 5th December, our Yr 9 and 10 Finance students were visited by the Legal & General Financial Education team. The programme they facilitate is called Everyday Money, designed to teach young people about earning money, spending money and saving money. The students attended the 2.5hr workshops in groups throughout the day The day covered some basic aspects of maths, but mainly focussed on real life choices (e.g. doing their food and basic household goods shopping, checking their payslips etc.) The L&G team used augmented reality activities and competitions to help the students engage, learn and remember the information so that they can make informed decisions now and in the future when it comes to their personal finances. The students learned a lot throughout the workshops which complimented the work they have been doing in their finance lessons – we would like to thank the Legal & General team for giving their time to visit us.To read more about the activities our students took part in visit the school website >>

Leeds Beckett Student VisitAs a result of our ongoing partnership with Leeds Beckett University we were asked to host a Professional Experience Day.Last Friday, 56 students, in the first year of their degree in Educational Studies, were invited to visit Bingley Grammar to look at Transition, the process of managing the movement of pupils between primary and secondary school. The day started with an introduction from Mr Weston, Headteacher, who set the scene by giving an overview of Bingley Grammar. Mr Foster, Head of Key Stage 3, then went on to talk about transition, in particular, the structure and timings of a process which happens over 4 terms. We use a system which ensures all our new intake start with the necessary support in place to help them be the best they can be (Belong, Grow, Succeed). He later talked through the importance of data and assessment information from our feeder schools, explaining how we use it to make sure pupils end up in the correct groups for them both academically and socially.Mr Brown, Student Support Officer, then encouraged the students to think about the emotional/social side of transition and how we as a school can make the whole process as easy and pleasant as possible for our pupils. The Leeds Beckett students all observed a Year 7 lesson and also had a Q&A session with a small group of Year 7s where they were able to ask about personal experiences of the transition process. The day went extremely well and feedback from our visitors was really positive.

Brilliant ClubThe Year 12 Brilliant Club students have been working hard during their one to one sessions with Sarah Ward PhD tutor from the University of Leeds, on their chosen topic in Medicinal Chemistry, looking at new ways to treat the rare cancer Neuroblastoma.Sarah says, “ I have been really enjoying the tutorials so far with both groups and I’ve been really impressed with some of the work I’ve seen so far”The final deadline is approaching fast. We wish them all Good luck with their final assignment. Mrs Williams said,“We are looking forward to their Graduation event in early February at the University of Leeds where we can celebrate their hard work and success.”

Year 9 & 10 Brilliant Club Spring TermCongratulations to all the Year 9 and 10 students who have been selected to take part in The Brilliant Club program next term. It was a hard decision to select the final students as we had some superb rationales (letters written by the students entitled “why I should be selected and how this program will help me in the future”).The students will be attending a launch event early in January at the University of Sheffield. During this day they will meet the PhD tutor who will work with them in small groups.

Geography Field TripsIt has been a busy last few weeks for A-Level Geographers out on field trips.

A beautiful but bitterly cold morning saw 20 Year 12 Geographers walk into Bingley during a double period to find evidence of how Bingley has changed in terms of transport, industry and high street shops for their local place study. Year 13 headed to Leeds to collect primary data for their individual investigations. Some were based in the CBD and Trinity shopping centre looking at impact of regeneration projects whilst others navigated down the Otley Road investigating the changing quality of life, place identity and impact of chain stores in creating clone towns. Our next field trip will be a day trip to Flamborough & Hornsea to look at beach profiles and impact of coastal management.Mrs White

Food Science & NutritionOur Food rooms are always a hive of activity; full of delicious aromas and dishes being created. Here are some photos of a few of the things students in different

year groups have been creating.

Year 10 Main DishesLast week our Year 10 Food and Nutrition students had their first opportunity to create a main dish of their own choice without support. This is in preparation for the 3 hour practical exam they will undertake in Year 11, where they have to make 3 dishes of their own choice showing a certain level of skill.

Year 11 Christmas TreesLast Monday our Year 11 made Christmas Trees using bread dough and Christmas Wreaths.

Year 9 Decorative CheesecakesEarlier this month Mrs Wentling was blown away by the Yr 9s response to their ‘make a decorated cheesecake’ brief! The level of skill shown in the decoration is incredible for students in Year 9.

Christmas BiscuitsOn Thursday 14th December Mrs Wentling held the annual Christmas Cookery Event!

Mrs Wentling and Miss Wilkinson organised the event but Ruby and Mollie in Year 9 lead the event by demonstrating to the group how to make snowmen biscuits.

Ruby and Mollie are both taking GCSE Food and Nutrition and seemed to really enjoy leading and teaching the group, with a little help from Mrs Wentling. All the students (from Years 7 and 8) had lots of fun and one student even asked if we could run the club again this week!

The biscuits were made using a creaming method recipe - Ruby and Mollie taught the group the creaming technique, how to roll icing, how to decorate marshmallows as well as how to assemble their snowmen - each student made 24 festive biscuits to take home and enjoy.

Mrs Wentling would like to congratulate Ruby and Mollie for their mature attitude and thank them for making the event really jolly and fun for the group.

Year Group MessagesYear 7Mrs Roberts and Mrs Faunch would like to say yet another MASSIVE well done to all year 7 for their excellent transition into Bingley Grammar School. Year 7 have had a fabulous first term keeping up with the goal set “We will be known for our kindness and good manners” towards each other. Mrs Roberts and Mrs Faunch wish all year 7 students and their families a happy and well deserved break and a Merry Christmas to all. Year 8All students have had a very good start and have tried their best to achieve the goal set at the start of the term which was for the year to be “known for out respect to one another”. Many of the students have been rewarded for their hard work and achievements through our Christmas Assembly and we hope all students will continue to Belong, Grow and Suceed at Bingley Grammar School. Miss Qayyum has joined the Year 8 team recently and is enjoying getting to know you all. Both of us would like to wish all the students a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing the students again in the New Year for another successful term.

Year 9We had a fantastic rewards assembly this week that recognised the hard work of many of our students. We celebrated achievement in terms of improvement, attendance, engagement with learning and contribution to the life of the form. Mr Brown and I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our students and their parents Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Year 10As a busy Autumn term draws to a close for our Year 10 students, we would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our students and their parents/carers a peaceful and pleasant Christmas break. I have been pleased with the level of engagement our year 10 students have shown during this time and know that they are developing themselves for future successes. Our students have made a really positive start to their GCSE option courses and have continued to make positive progression in the core subject areas. Many have got involved in wider aspects of school life such as sports teams, fund raising and educational workshops with external agencies. We look forward to continuing our pastoral work with this cohort during 2018 and beyond. Finally, we would like to wish you and your families a happy and fulfilling 2018. Mr Martin & Mrs Bradley

Year 11Congratulations to our Year 11 students for maintaining your motivation through what has been a long and at times stressful term. Overall you have been really productive and working hard in class - the end goal is in sight and we are here to support you during this important year. Congratulations to the 130 students who received their Year 11 Progress Hoodies in the rewards assembly this week. It is a testament to their hard work and dedication. Mrs Rawling and Mr Tucker are looking forward to seeing the continued sucess and progress in Yr 11 as students work towards their GCSE exams in May.

Sixth FormWe have had an incredibly busy and successful first term in the sixth form – Year 12 students have been settling into their courses and learning to manage their private study time; Year 13 students continue to mature into independent learners and many have already received university offers. Over 100 university applications have already been processed, with all students receiving individual support and guidance. We wish all our students a healthy, restful holiday and look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and

revitalised in the New Year.

Bright Sparks On Monday 18 December, a special Christmas visitor attended the

Bright Sparks Christmas party! Our staff and students worked really hard to give the children a memorable day with games, party food and of course, a visit from Santa. The Health and Social Care students have been a real credit to our school and parents have commented on how helpful and enthusiastic they have been - week after week their efforts have been praised. Mrs Williams would like to say a big thank you as always to Donna Frankland and Julia Precious for all their hard work and commitment saying,“Bright Sparks is a thriving local community baby and toddler group and provides fabulous real life experience for all our Health and Social Care students in Years 10-13. We are looking forward to another successful year.”

Yr 7 Thompson Court VisitOn Wednesday 13th December, Miss Shah and PGCE student Miss Pugh, took a group of

Year 7 students to visit the residents at Thompson Court Care Home in Crossflatts. At the beginning of the term Miss Shah spoke to her RE classes about how important it is to care for others in our community and a number of Year 7 students said they wanted to do something for the elderly residents in our local area. The group decided to collect gifts for a hamper for the residents of Thompson Court and Poppy offered to bring her guitar and play a few songs. Poppy played and sang and the other students joined in which the residents really enjoyed. The students then spent time talking, listening and sharing stories - the visit went very well and we were warmly received by residents and staff. The day after their visit, Miss Shah received a lovely letter from Shirley at Thompson Court thanking the students for giving their time and the thoughtful hamper to the residents (complete with homemade cookies!)To see more photos and read Thompson Court’s thank you letter visit our school website.
