Meeting Minutes

The reading of the August meeting minutes were emailed to all members, so we dispensed with reading of minutes.

Santa Birnbaum is our new member. Ann McCauley has discontinued her membership.

Carol Patton reported 13 members are going on the retreat Oct. 3-6. We have room for additional, but the cut off date is today. Carol will be sending emails to those signed up with details of time, etc.

Debbie will be at the retreat to help anyone who wants to work on modern quilts. Nancy said the first clue for the mystery bed runner will be given on Oct. 11. There are only 3 clues for this runner. Susan showed a sample of the table runner to be taught in Oct. Supply list will be in the Big Cypress Whisper. Lynn reported charity donations by the chapter for 3rd quarter total at $2,093 and year to date total at $5,083. Way to go ladies! Karla said she & Dottie had taken supplies to the teachers at Wildwood Elementary School & asked if we were still interested in doing this as a group. Suggestion was made to do something for Valentines’ Day. Dottie will email a suggested supply list & we can bring in items for a gift basket for the teachers.

Flo reported on the 2 most recent flights, one being “Flightless”. Thank you notes from veterans were read. Quilts are still needed for the upcoming “Flightless” flight. A group plans to work on these at the all-day sew this coming Thursday, Sept 29, 9am to 9pm, at Manatee Rec Ctr. We will have a share a salad lunch and decide on dinner menu at that time. Bob Evans Restaurant is holding a benefit event on Oct. 18 from 6am to 9pm. 15% of sales will go to Honor Flight. Honor Flight will celebrate their 5th anniversary with a volunteer thank you day on Oct 15 from 11am to 2pm at Wildwood Community Center. Anyone who has made a quilt for Honor Flight is invited.

Meeting Minutes

We sang to Diane Clemons, Susan Simone & Dottie Myers as they were given treats.

Grand Oaks sent a letter regarding their Festival of Trees to be held 11/26 thru 12/3 from 4 to 8pm each day. Proceeds will go to charity.

Flo said the Oct 25 business meeting will start at 12:30 SHARP. We will have a discussion then paper ballot vote to decide on increasing/not increasing our maximum membership from 60 to 80. Problem of absentees was discussed. If you cannot be at this meeting you can write your discussion/vote and have someone read it at the meeting. We will also have a speaker here to talk about Project Linus.

Jeannie reported the guild is looking for nominees for Secretary and Vice-President. If you know of someone who you think would be good, contact the committee and they will talk to that individual.

Sarah went over upcoming programs/classes – Oct 5 animal portrait quilting, Oct 10 animal portrait quilting, & Oct 19 paper piecing. She also asked for volunteers to help host the Oct 4 guild meeting. Judy reviewed Presidents’ meeting information. Our chapter is also asked to help with the Sunday sew at Sterling Heights Rec Ctr during Oct. If you were not at today’s meeting and want to help, call Sarah Dudak.

In other Informations from the Guild

In order to facilitate the collection of 2107 Showcase Quilt Entry Forms, we are extending the due date from September 27 to October 4, the date of our next coordinators’ meeting and our monthly guild meeting.

November 1st: “Mini Fiber Art Gallery – Post Card Quilts” with Karol Kusmaul . She will share her collection and experience from years of exchanging quilted postcards with artists from all over the world. Many of these small pieces are of gallery quality. Some of the exchanges were themed, and you will see a wide variety of techniques, materials, and concepts. You will be inspired by these quick little master works. November 2nd: “Places to Go/Going Places” with Karol Kusmaul . She will bring samples of her freestyle landscape work, and discuss and demonstrate her processes. Students will layout a landscape scene, using light, medium and dark prints of only two colors. Critique and discussion of composition, shading, color and depth will follow. Students will be shown the ladder stitch for appliquéing the shapes to the batting with embroidery thread. Rohan at 9:30 P.M. – 3:30 P.M. Price $50.00 –registration fee Lunch will not be provided. Members’ Highlights: Selina Kidney

I've been living full time here in the Villages for 19 months. I've been a member of Big Cypress for a bit over a year. I heard about our guild and the opening that was available from Linda Hungerford who I met though our quilt blogs while I still lived in Jersey.

I came to The Villages from NJ. There I was a member of the Molly Pitcher Quilt guild for over 15 years. I have been machine sewing since I was about 5. My mom would let me attempt to sew numbers on tea towels. I started sewing clothes in high school and for a period of time I was a Home Economics major.

My first quilts were made by hand quilting around the designs on patterned children's sheets or cross stitch on gingham. I advanced to actual quilting when I found my first local quilt store. There I learned to piece and applique by hand in addition to the hand quilting. About that time I joined the guild and participated in their Charity program where I found my quilting niche. Speed is what hooked me. Back in the day the chairperson of the guilds Charity program explained to the group that the Children we were helping needed quilty hugs not perfect points and matching seams. I took her at her word and never looked back. To this day perfect means very little to me. My Speedy quilting for Charity is wonderful and very fulfilling.

Over the years I have gotten much better at matching seams and close to perfect points but still, I truly don't care. I have been able to complete 6 - 9 quilts for various charities each year. I also do small quilting things for friends and family mainly because they all already have quilts. I love small quick quilty projects like placemats, baskets and totes. I do love retirement and the time it gives me to quilt and time to be involved with this guild and its wonderful membership.

I enjoy working with everyone and continue to learn something new on a meeting by meeting basis. Thank you one and all for sharing your friendship and your talent.

Cook Books: “Cooking in Paradise” There are approximately 125 cookbooks remaining to be sold (from a total of 1100 published). No money will be returned to the Chapters (from presales) or donated to Shepherd's Lighthouse until ALL books are sold. Shepherd's Lighthouse will be completing the second phase of their extensive remodeling this fall (September/October) – and this is our target date to finish selling the remaining cookbooks

Check your Christmas list, upcoming family occasions, and quilting friends up north – wouldn't they like a cookbook? Cookbooks also make wonderful hostess gifts. Cost of a cookbook is $20. As an extra incentive, we will mail cookbooks to snowbirds free of shipping charges!

Binding: To ensure your binding goes on smoothly run a row of stitching around the edge of the quilt to hold all three layers together before you attach it.

9 Unique Quilt Binding Tips & Tricks By Carrie Sisk

Almost every quilter is going to create binding for quilt projects, unless they pay someone else to do it. The thought may have crossed your mind at some point. But, as always, Fons & Porter is here to help and so are our loyal quilting friends. Below are 9 great quilt binding tips submitted to Fons & Porter by quilters like you! See if there’s anything here that makes you go, “Well, that makes sense! Why didn’t I think of that?”

Tip #1 – The Right Width

Sometimes I need to change the width of my binding depending on the thickness of the batting and fabric in a quilt. I make sample bindings so I can audition them to find which size I need before cutting binding for the quilt. The widths are marked on the samples. ~ Alice Miller Marcellus, MI

Tip #2 – Flannel Binding

This is a fun way to finish flannel quilts for children. Cut straight binding strips 2″ or 2½” wide. Sew to the back of one side of the quilt with right sides together. Turn binding to the front and stitch through all the layers, covering the binding stitching line (I use a serpentine stitch). Clip the binding to make fringe and repeat for remaining sides. ~ Elaine Pelton Sandpoint, ID

Tip #3 – Binding Aid

After I cut and press my binding, I lay it flat, and fold it into 8″ – 12″ increments in a back and forth motion. Then I slip a large rubber band on each end. When I sew the binding on the quilt, I can release as much binding as I need.

Tip #4 – Decorative Binding

When it came time to bind a quilt I was making for a friend, and I realized I didn’t have any matching fabric left, I used a ready-made binding. I used a decorative machine

Tip #5 – Binding Roll

Make your binding strip as usual. Rather than pressing the long strip in half to form the double binding, fold it and wind it jellyroll style (not tight, but tight enough for a compact roll). Place a pin at the end to secure the roll and set aside until you are ready to bind the quilt. Before you start to sew the binding on the quilt, drop the roll (intact) into a Ziploc sandwich bag. Take the pin out and unwind about 6-8 inches (enough to reach the outside of the bag) and zip the bag up to the binding strip. Holding the end, let the bag drop to the floor beside your feet . As you sew the binding will unroll by itself inside the bag – not all over your work table or getting tangled up on the floor. This eliminates pressing, as well as tangling, therefore saving time.

Tip #6 – Appliquéd Bias Strips

For beautifully curved and flat bias strips, steam press approximate curves before applying. I use metal bias bars to prepare my strips, but this method works with any type of bias.

Tip #7 – Easy Folding Bias

When making folded binding, I always have a hard time keeping it from slipping off the ironing board as I press it. To solve this problem, I pin a small strip of cloth to the pointed end of the board, leaving enough space for the flat, unpressed width of the binding to pass through. On the other end of the board, I pin another small strip of cloth, leaving enough space for the folded part of the binding to pass through. I can press the binding while the fabric strips hold it all in place until I reach the end.

Tip #8 – Binding Dispenser

When I make my binding for a quilt, I wrap it around a tube that I have saved from kitchen plastic wrap (it is heavier than a toilet tissue or paper towel tube). Then I put the tube inside an empty Kleenex tissue box so that I can roll it out through the slit. That way the binding stays wrapped around the tube and it dispenses easily through the slit as I sew it onto the quilt.

Tip #9 – Tangle Free Binding

To keep my binding from falling on the floor as I am sewing it on, I put it in a plastic grocery bag. I pull one handle of the bag through the other and then slip the loop on my right arm. The bag is lightweight and now I don’t step on the binding strip.
