More mentors step up – but more men needed
Kia ora. Welcome to our first newsletter for 2012.
Last year was a tremendously busy year for us, with a 40% growth in the number of mentors – 140 matches were ‘served’ in the region. Currently we have 112 mentors matched with young people. However, we still have a waiting list of 48 young people, 36 of whom are boys. Most of these boys are still at primary school and lack a positive male role model in their life. So we’re actively looking for men who can provide some one-on-one support, encouragement and fun for these young boys. The only skill a mentor needs is to be themselves. An hour or two a week can change a young person’s life. If this sounds like you or someone you know please give us a call on 03 545 9864 or email [email protected]
Check out our Facebook page and keep up-to-date with what’s happening. You can “like” the site and receive regular updates. Or visit our website at http://www.bigbrothersbigsisters.org.nz/local/nelson/ Best wishes from the team at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson.

Trolley racers get ready for derby day A horde of lean mean machines will whizz down Nelson’s
Collingwood Street on Saturday March 17 for the annual
Robertson’s Trolley Derby.
The derby provides a chance for inventive trolley-builders to
test out their masterpieces by roaring down the street as
fast as they can.
The derby is always a fun and thrilling spectacle and Big
Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson is fortunate to again be the
associated charity for the event.
So if you’re not taking part in the derby yourself, you might
want to head down to have a look at the action. There will
be entertainment and food stalls at the event and this year
for the first time there will also be a ``have a go’’ area for
kids who want to try out a few trolleys.
More information on the event can be found at the Nelson
Trolley Club’s website www.nelsontrolleyclub.co.nz
The derby kicks off at 10am and runs to about 4pm. Racing
takes place in the upper end of Collingwood Street.

Become a mentor today – and make a real difference to a young person’s life... Becoming a ``Big Brother” or a ``Big Sister’’ could be one of the most rewarding and enjoyable things you’ll ever
do.
It’s not hard; all you have to do is spend an hour or two a week with a young person doing the kinds of things you
both enjoy. Like flying a kite. Or kicking a ball around in the park. Or even walking your dog.
You’ll probably even find it’s fun, and at the same time you’ll be making a real difference to your young person.
So what are you waiting for? Contact Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson today:

A real-life fire engine and fire hose were big drawcards at our annual
BBQ breakfast at Tahunanui Beach in January. Nelson firefighters were kept
busy showing young people and mentors how to operate a fire hose and the
hose spray proved to be irresistible for some young people looking for an
opportunity to cool off in the hot summer sun.
