Items roll in for auction fundraiser

With a month to go before our fundraising auction, items to put under the hammer are steadily rolling in. So far we’ve received art works, sports memorabilia, clothing, plants, recreation gear and lots of vouchers for meals, accommodation, travel, tourist attractions, recreation activities and various services. Mentors who have made a difference: real-life experiences

Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne’s memorable mentor: My father was both a mentor and a role model to me. While he died six years ago, he is still very real in my life and means a lot to me. Why he meant so much to me: Dad simply gave me a secure family environment in which to grow up. He was always supportive of me and my two brothers, supporting us in all our endeavours, and was always there for us and available to give advice.

Memorable mentor of SBS Bank Nelson manager Cam Haring:

I have had a number of people who have had a positive effect on my life. My parents encouraged me and promoted the value of tertiary education. My grand-father taught me the value of doing something right the first time and paying attention to detail. I remember a sign in his garage above his woodworking bench which read: ``Use your head... It’s the little things that count.’’ My mentors gave me the self-belief that I could achieve whatever I set out to do. I have always tried to take every opportunity and be the best at what I do, which is the direct result of those mentors.

Become a mentor – and make a real difference to a young person’s life...

Becoming a ``Big Brother” or a ``Big Sister’’

could be one of the most rewarding and

enjoyable things you’ll ever do.

It’s not hard; all you have to do is spend an

hour or two a week with a young person doing

the kinds of things you both enjoy. Like flying a

kite. Or kicking a ball around in the park. Or

even walking your dog.

You’ll probably even find it’s fun, and at the

same time you’ll be making a real difference to

your young person.

So what are you waiting for?
