David Oscarson Harvest CollectionCollectors reap what this artisan penmaker has sown.

With designs that address func-tion and aesthetics in equalmeasure, David Oscarson’s

eponymous company stands outamong the new wave of artisan penmanufacturers.

Oscarson’s fourth series is the Har-vest Collection, which, unlike somany pen collections, was inspired byneither event nor anniversary, but bythe Zeitgeist. The autumn theme, saysOscarson, alludes to a world climate

in which people have become morecontemplative. “Fall is a time ofreflection for many of us, particularlyin the Northern Hemisphere,” heexplains.“The law of the harvest keepsour feet on the ground.”

The traditional shape of each Har-vest pen’s barrel and its pastoral deco-ration are enhanced by three levels ofguilloche engraving and two colors oftranslucent enamel. These techniquesendow the pen with astonishing

visual depth and brilliant color. But the real joy comes in the writ-

ing. Oscarson emphasizes that his pensare more substantial than celluloidpens.“What most people notice is thatthey are also properly balanced,” heexplains,“and the weight of the barrelis forward-balanced, resulting inextremely comfortable use.”

Fitted with an 18-karat gold nibtipped with iridium, the Harvest isavailable in five colors, most of whichare autumnal hues. The standard ster-ling silver and enamel models ($4,000for rollerballs and $4,200 for fountainpens) will be produced in quantitiesof 88 per color. The collection alsoincludes a limited number of solid18-karat gold pens decorated withvarying amounts of pavé diamonds($42,000 to $75,000). —ken kessler

SEND IN THE CLOWNS

The love affair between Pierrot and Pierrette, two clowns made famous by the commediadell’arte and French pantomime, was the basisfor the David Oscarson Pierrot and Pierrettepen duo. The colorful, modernist-lookingpens are available in rollerball or fountain penmodels in black or white, with each variationlimited to 88 pieces. The design represents achallenging technical feat because it com-bines three levels of Art Deco–style guillocheengraving with five colors of translucent hardenamel that accent the opalescent white oropaque black hard enamel barrels. The foun-tain pens, which are priced at $4,900, arefilled by cartridge, converter, or eyedropper, and each is set with three diamonds: one inthe cap crown, one at the bottom of the bar-rel, and one in the clip. —nancy olson

More than 11 carats of pavé diamonds and more than 1,400 calibrated sapphires totaling 13 carats adorn the one-of-a-kind David Oscarson Celestial (www.davidoscarson.com). The $150,000 foun-tain pen, which Manhattan jeweler Cel-lini (800.235.5464) commissioned and already has sold, is crafted from white gold and, in addition to the gems, features refined guilloche engraving layered with brilliant saffron and translucent white enamel. —n.o.

Pen: Jacques de Molay by david oscarson

✵ On October 13, 1307, Jacques de Molay, the last grand mas-ter of the Poor Knights of Christ and of the Temple of

Solomon, was arrested. Seven years later, after being tortured for a confession that the order committed blasphemous acts—which he later recanted—Molay was burned at the stake, and the Templars were dissolved. Molay’s refusal to damn the order was commemorated 700 years later by David Oscarson, who designed the Jacques de Molay pen—and created only 700. “It reminds you of the Cru sades,” says a Los Angeles–based Robb Report reader with a penchant for historically inspired objects. The sterling-silver, hot-enamel pen ($4,900 for the fountain pen, $4,700 for the roller ball) is decorated with emblems that are associated with the Templars, including an engraving of their seal: two knights on one horse, a reminder of the order’s initial poverty. 636. 458.4345, www.davidoscarson.com
