A Formidable Team!American Cancer Society and Bentwater

One of the hardest working organizations in Bentwater is a group of people who came together twenty-one years ago to collect money to donate to the American Cancer Society. Twins and long time Bentwater residents, Eva Sewell and Faye Powell are the only two remaining committee members still active with ACS/Bentwater Fundrais-ing effort. This year the two ladies were honored

as “Neighbor of the Year” in honor of the work they have done for many years. Each year the committee plans and organizes many different events that raise money for the Cancer Society. This year the chairperson of the ACS/Bentwater Fundraising effort, “Today a Promise…Tomorrow a Cure” is Kaye Stripling.

One of the biggest events is the ACS Live and Silent Auctions and the Ladies Golf Tournament which was held on April 17 and 18. The Live Auction on April 17 was chaired by Gina McGregor, Connie Smith and Geneva Montgomery. Wine and hors d’oeuvres were provided by Brooks Harris, a Bentwater builder and resident. The high point of the evening was the sale of Phil Patton’s painting “Ben Hogan” done by his wife Ann, who died of endometrial cancer last July. The painting was auc-tioned for $10,000 and was then donated back and re-auctioned for another $4,500. At the auction Phil spoke about his wife, how cancer affects so many people and how we all can never give up trying to find a cure. Another popular painting by Bentwater resident Lesley Spencer, “Pelican on 16”, was painted from a photograph by Dave Clements, also a Bentwater resident.

Auctioneer for the event was Ray Burgess. Also on view were the silent auction items which were available for bidding the next morning before the Ladies Golf Tournament. The ladies were treated to breakfast provided by Ted Lutzenburg, in honor of his wife Karyn. After the golf tournament the ladies enjoyed lunch in the country club at tables that were decorated by Beryl

Korb, Beth Witt and Susan Thacker. The handmade collect-able hummingbirds (the symbol of this year’s tournament) had been purchased by residents in honor, memory or appreciation of someone battling cancer. The sale of items at the live auction brought in $56,700 and the silent auction items were sold for $19,262.

Another big ACS event each year is Bentwater City Limits, a musical revue held at the Country Club over three nights in February. Residents, family and friends enjoyed dinner before being entertained by talented Bentwater residents at a musi-cal revue. This year, the City Limits was organized by Allen Haight, Keith Ann Gearn, Kevin Parsley, Dee Soderman and Michelle Chiste.

There are many other events throughout the year that benefit the ACS/Bentwater Fundraising effort including a Bake Sale chaired by Kathy McBane in the fall, golf lessons by the Golf Pros, a Tennis Tournament chaired by Esther Buri and the Turkey Trot sponsored by the Fitness Center. So far this year, this group has raised about $125,000 for the Cancer Society and over the twenty-one years the group has delivered about $2,000,000 to the American Cancer Society so that one day there will be a cure for this silent killer.

BoatingHow to spend less at the fuel pump

Contributed by Rob Brown, Bentwater Yacht Club Harbormaster

Are you getting the best fuel efficiency out of your boat? The answer is largely in your own hands…on the throttle. Here are a few tips for you to boat green, save gas and enjoy your time on the lake. The first couple of tips are easy to do.

First, regular maintenance on the engine is critical, change the oil and fuel filter annually.

Secondly, pounds = real drag. I am referring to weight. We are all guilty of carrying too much gear, some of which is not used. Please be careful to not remove your safety gear. Fill the fuel tank one-half in summer months.

Next, canvas enclosed T-tops, towers and Biminis’s all create aerodynamic drag, so if you can stand the heat while you have

your hand on the throttle, put them down. Opening your wind-shield can save you up to 3 mph.

Figuring out the best prop pitch and number of blades for your boat motor is a time consuming task but it will save you lots of $. When choosing a propeller, the single most important fac-tor is that the prop will allow the engine to “turn up” to a speed within the band designated by the manufacturer, which are usu-ally within 500 revolutions of absolute top rpm’s. This ensures the life of the engine without bogging it down or letting it over-rev.

The last tip is optimum trim…..this means reducing the wetted surface of the hull by raising the bow. Trim up until the prop ventilates a little (sucks air) then slightly bring it down to be most efficient.

BLO – Bentwater Ladies Organization

Contributed by Charlsie Rogge

Although the 2nd Monday luncheon takes a summer hiatus, a world of activities remain in place for the BLO!It is the middle of summer and most of the Bentwater Ladies Organization members should be enjoying a well-deserved rest from spring activities. Actually, most of the BLO members are working hard this summer babysitting or visiting family members, vacationing in cool places like Montana and Maine, or cruising around the world. It seems Bentwater ladies never truly rest. We can be seen watching our children and grandchildren at Kamp Bentwater, Golf and Tennis camp or just enjoying the life around the pool. Dining In groups are hosting Bar-B-Q’s, tasting wines at the Yacht Club or enjoying an evening by the lake listening to Ezra Charles or some cool jazz over Memorial Day weekend. Behind the scenes the planning continues for our fall and winter activities.

But, before we leave the summer behind, newcomers to Bentwater should mark your calendars for the Newcomers Wine and Cheese party, scheduled for Thursday after-noon, August 25. This party will give you a chance to meet some of your neighbors and get to know the BLO officers and a little more about the community. This is co-sponsored by the Bentwater Ladies Organization, the Bentwater Ambassadors and the Bentwater Property Owners Association. If you are new to Bentwater, please contact one of our Newcomer Committee members, Sherry Coward, 936-647-2268, Lynne Tolles, 936-647-2065, Les Gotsch, 936-597-8163 or Owanna Been, 936-597-9213 or Dawn Cleboski at the POA, 936-597-5532.

At the May BLO luncheon Debby Capps and Linda Gent took reservations for our Louisiana Coushatta Golf and Gambling trip scheduled for October 25-26. Debby reported that she has already filled one bus. We all travel by bus for a leisurely ride to the Coushatta resort located near Kinder, LA. It’s about a three and a half hour ride.

We play bingo on the way over and also coming back to Bentwater.

When we arrive on Tuesday, the non-golfers are dropped off at the casino and the golfers head over to Kosati Pines Golf Club for lunch and a fun tourna-ment. No husbands, pets or kids to take care of, no cooking, no cleaning, no driving, just fun with your gal pals-what could be better? Don’t be left out! If you are interested, contact Denny Capps at 936-597-5134 for more information.

Looking forward to our September meet-ing. It will be on Monday, September 12 at 11:30 at the Yacht Club. Please call the Country Club or register online in early September for the luncheon. The theme is “Remember When… A Musical Feast”. We hope to see lots of new faces at this event. As always, it is never too late to become a member of BLO. Just call Nancy Sappenfield, 936-597-4379 to join.

At a cost of over $170,000 , we have a new driving range at Bentwater! With more and more new members, additional space was needed for our practice area as well as an overall upgrade of the facility. Jared Maerz, Head Golf Professional, is enthusiastic about this wonderful feature.

Driving Range

New Targets

On the former driving range, targets consisted of four flag poles placed on flat ground, at known distances from markers imbed-ded on the practice tee.

The new layout will have four elevated landing areas that will rep-licate actual greens and will have flag poles on them for distance reference. This will give the golfer a much more realistic feel for practice shots. All distances have been measured by laser.

The irrigation system has been modified to ensure water cover-age on the front and back of each practice green, so they should stand out visually, even in drought conditions.

Some members wondered in the past if some practice tees would be placed at the south end of the range. Jared stated that it is no longer being considered because of the length of the range. It is only 288 yards from the south end of the range to the front of the north practice area. This limited distance could create a hazard to users of the north end.

Practice Mats

The practice mats were ripped out and sent to mat heaven. The new ones are state-of-the-art, manufactured by Fiber Built Corp, an industry leader for this product. Actually, Mark Mass-ingale has been using one of them for the past two years and it has held up extremely well.

The other mats were laid out on plain, bare earth with little preparation of the foundation. The new ones have a concrete base or pad with a rubber overlay and are sectioned into four squares. If one of the squares wears out or is damaged, it can be replaced without having to re-do the entire setup. The problem of trying to tee up the ball for driver practice has been resolved by having three methods available for this. There is a plastic tee available, a longer length of simulated grass that will hold a wood tee, and finally, you will be able to place a wood tee in the ground at the mat area.

Food Bank Delivery More EfficientConveniently donate to Montgomery County Food Bank by dropping donations to the POA office! Open Monday thru Friday

Many of you are consistently looking for ways to give to your community and into the lives of those who have hit on hard times. One of the most gracious ways to accomplish that is a regular donation to the Montgomery County Food Bank. Your POA is always looking for ways to assist you in these endeavors and thanks to United Way Volunteer Fred Ziker, we can now improve this area as well.

Fred, a Bentwater resident, is now coming by the POA office twice a week to pick up donations to the food bank and take

them with him on the days he volunteers to work there. This enables us to take in more donations, gives you one central loca-tion to drop off food, and speeds up the delivery process thereby getting food to the needy in a more timely manner.

Hats off and a big, “Whoohaa!!” to Fred Ziker for his spirit of volunteerism and a big, “Thank you so much!” to those of you who donate on a regular basis.

Let’s Keep Bentwater an Animal Friendly Community

General Manager’sMessage

Bentwater POAFriendly, Courteous, HelpfulGeneral ManagerDawn [email protected]

Pets are great to have around. It’s been reported that in some cases, having a pet may lower your stress levels. They’re also loving and fun for the kids and grand-children and some pets even become “family members”. But pets need to be cared for. That means taking the dog for its exercise walk. Here are a couple of very important things you can do to help keep our neighborhoods animal friendly. Some neighborly rules When walking your dog, be sure it’s on a leash whether you are in your front yard,

the street or at the Park in the Meadows. A leash law is in effect in Montgomery County and the Bentwater deed restric-tions also reflect they must be on a leash. The last thing you want to risk is losing that precious part of the family because they weren’t on a safety leash. When your neighbors see your dog on a leash, they know they can trust you to keep it under control. LEASH UP and help keep your neighborhood animal friendly.

Sanitation As you walk your pet...follow up with

pick-up. Take your gloves, plastic bag, scoop, or whatever pick-up system you’ve developed. You may have noticed we have Dog Poop equipment in the Park in the Meadows for your convenience. Everyone wants their kids and grandkids to have a clean place to run and play in the park. Finally, a reminder that our golf courses are not dog walking areas.

Thanks for taking care of your pets so our neighborhoods and park stay clean, safe, happy and animal friendly!

Bentwater is proud of all of you! GO BEARS!

Golf CartsSlow down and smell the roses

You just gotta’ love riding in a golf cart. They’re open air vehicles that get you up close and personal with your surround-ings, putting you in the middle of the weather. They move you along with little noise from the motor and a soft cushiony ride, provided of course you don’t floor it going down hill and aim for every big bump you see. They encourage you to slow down and smell the roses. And that’s a good thing.

Slowing down also keeps you safe. Even though golf carts have four wheels, they can turn over and cause serious injury or worse. Slow it down. Be sure you stop at all the golf cart stop signs, and check the street both ways before you proceed thru the crossing. Stay off the streets as much as possible and use the cart paths.

Remember, a current permit issued by Bentwater Country Club and a driver’s license valid in the state of Texas is required for driving a golf cart in Bentwater.

On a more somber note, several property owners have asked us to let you know about an article in the Houston Chronicle regarding a golf cart fatality in Manvel, TX. A nine-year old boy driving a golf cart, with his sister as a passenger, drove it into a ditch where it overturned, killing the boy and injuring his sister.

One last thing...some people have asked, “Can we have a two-tiered cart fee, one for the carts used on the golf course and one for when the cart is used just for riding to the mailbox or the club?” After a response from our attorneys to this question, it is not feasible due to the deed restrictions.

Ladies Have A New Locker Room

As our community grows and becomes even more socially integrated, it becomes neces-sary to expand and upgrade some of our facilities. Once adequate for a limited number of golfers, the Ladies Locker Room has now been expanded to accommodate a more diverse segment of Bentwater activities. It includes a card room and a comfortable lounge area in addition to the traditional locker and shower areas. Plush sofas and arm chairs along with carpet and furniture give it a nice inviting atmosphere and a place to indulge in social activities with friends and guests.

A new flat screen television, two sets of French doors leading to different areas and a permanent computer desk for entering golf scores are a few of the highlights that stand out. All of these improvements should allow for larger gatherings in the expanded space.

Food and Beverage Service Some of the best news is that there will be a locker room manager on site Tuesday through Saturday, every week, to take care of ordering food and drinks, cleaning and shining shoes and keeping the rooms neat and orderly.

Hot and cold food will be available for all occasions. There will be a special Ladies Locker Room menu with appetizers, soups, salads, and sandwiches. Things are defi-nitely looking up.

Lone Star Monumentand Historical Flag Park

The grand opening of The Lone Star Monument and Historical Flag Park, witnessed by over 2,000 people and loads of dignitaries, was held on Texas Inde-pendence day, April 21st. It opened to the public with extremely positive reviews said President and Bentwater Resident, Dave Clements.

The Park's dedication and unveiling cer-emony was witnessed by an enthusiastic crowd estimated at about 2,000 people.

The Lone Star Freedom Flight, led by Bentwater's own Sam Ward, flew over the park. One of our favorite Bentwater employees, golf starter Ike Hargraves, was selected as one of the flag bearers, carry-ing the Alabama Red Rover Flag. Ike was chosen to carry a flag as he is a veteran of both World War II and The Korean Con-flict, joining at the age of sixteen.

Country Music Legend and Male Vocal-ist of the Year, Clint Black, raised the San Jacinto Liberty Flag. Five Time Grammy winner and Grand Ole Opry star, Marty Stuart, representing the vol-unteers who came to fight for Texas from Mississippi and Tennessee, raised the 1824 Tri-color Flag. Bentwater resident Don Bradshaw's son-in-law, retired Navy Seal Mike Thornton , raised the Coahuila y Tejas Flag. Mike is a recipient of The Congressional Medal Of Honor, having fought in Vietnam.

The Park is located next to Montgomery County Library in Conroe.www.texasflagpark.org

The spring scheduled luncheon and meeting held at the Coun-try Club was called to order by Richard Sikes. Guest Speaker was Stan Furce, Director of the Houston High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, which serves 16 counties and 29 agencies in Southeastern Texas. Stan, a Bentwater Resident, is married

with two daughters and four grandchildren. He has spent many years in the service of our country, both home and abroad, and is very knowledgeable about drug markets around the world. Good job, Stan.

The MOB membership recently installed Mike Thornton, Con-gressional Medal of Honor Recipient, as an Honorary Member.

A reminder - Volunteers are needed for the July 4th Parade Entry for the MOB and for the Picnic in the Park, hosted by the MOB this year.

Activities for the merry month of May, included a golf out-ing to the Austin Area, playing the Forest Creek and Shadow Glen Courses. One of the evening meals was provided by the renowned Gumbo’s Restaurant. All arrangements for this out-ing were provided by MOB member, Jack Visage.

Our May Breakfast Meeting brought Linda Pierce, Board Member of MUD 18, and Kermit Black, Board Member, Lake Conroe Communities Network, LCCN, providing information on the water conservation programs in Bentwater. Much inter-est has been shown.

Greg Smith This Amphibian Is No Frog.A tale about Greg Smith and his buddy, Pappy Gray

Cessna 185 anchored at the dock Greg Smith and his amphibian Greg and his dinner!

Bentwater resident, Greg Smith, needed a Cajun food fix and decided to go at it the hard way. Pappy Gray, also a Bentwater resident, was the co-pilot.

The owner of a Cessna 185 amphibious airplane, Greg cranked her up and departed our Lone Star Airport heading due east for New Orleans where they were to rendezvous with some other float plane enthusiasts. Once joined up, off to the Louisiana bayous they went as a flight of 2 airplanes, both amphibians. Landing on the water at the west edge of Lake Des Allemandes,

they water taxied up a beautifully scenic bayou to an old Cajun restaurant for lunch.

Seeing a small commotion under some ancient moss laden oak trees, an investigation revealed a good sized alligator lying on the grass. Being a fearless sort, Greg decided to wrestle a bit with him and had the animal under control within a few minutes.

All that activity worked up an appetite and so the group repaired to the restaurant and had a meal of…….you guessed it, alligator! A great trip with some exciting memories.

Zelda Johnson

Zelda Mae Mack Johnson, 78, passed away peacefully after a courageous struggle with cancer in Montgomery (Bentwater) Texas.

She is survived by her loving husband Nor-man Johnson, her devoted children David Johnson, Gary Johnson and Jan Gann, and her son-in-law Jeff Gann, as well as her brother, Herbert Laney Mack, her sister-

in-law Rose Mack, and her nieces and nephews Betsy Boeck-man, Carol Cook, Pat Smith, Jill Jarreau, Mitzi Dinecola and Lane Mack.

Born in DeQuincy, Louisiana to Herbert and Mae Mack, she attended elementary and high school there and later McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA. She was a member of the Baptist Church, and married the love of her life, Norman, who shared the same birthday, at age 21. They chose to be married on their common birthday and were active life companions for 57 years.

Later in life, she and Norman decid-ed to move to the Bentwater com-munity on Lake Conroe, where she was very involved and lived until her death. She had many dear friends there and became a member of the Red Hat Soci-ety, or “ladies who lunch”. She also enjoyed many sum-mers in Durango, Colorado where she entertained friends, some of whom were from the Bentwater community, played golf, and simply enjoyed the cooler Colorado climate and brilliant sunshine.

At the end of her life, she was attended by two of her loving nieces, Jill Jarreau and Mitzi Dinecola, who did everything pos-sible to make her transition an easy one. A very special thanks goes out to both of them.

Travel - Bentwater Golf Cruise

Bermuda Golf Group before beginning play at Belmont Hills

A Trip to Bermuda and the Caribbean

Highlights- Barbara Visage’s First Hole-In-One By Gerusa Parks

Our spring Bentwater travel this year featured a cruise to Ber-muda and the Caribbean for a

group of 39 current and former residents, about half of them avid golfers. The cruise aboard Celebrity Summit sailed from San Juan, Puerto Rico and visited the Carib-bean islands of St. Maarten, St. Thomas and Tortola before traveling north for a two-day stop in Bermuda, then returning home via Cape Liberty, New Jersey.

The event offered an abundance of culinary and other entertainment and sightseeing opportunities, but golf was at the top of the list for many couples and individuals. The islands of St. Thomas and Bermuda provided real treats for them. On St. Thomas the golf group played the

famous Mahogany Run course, featur-ing the notorious “Devil’s Triangle”, a series of 3 tortuous holes with challeng-ing terrain and plunging cliffs over the ocean from which only a few escaped unscathed. Then on to Bermuda, where the highlight of the trip occurred: a “Hole-in-One” by Barbara Visage on # 4 of the beautiful Belmont Hills course. Closest-to-the-Pin competition was featured on both golfing days, with Jerry Lowrey and Phyllis Denny winning Out-back Steakhouse gift certificate prizes for their accomplishments. A cocktail party celebration of Barbara’s achievement was provided aboard ship the following eve-ning by Jack and Barbara Visage.

Aided by beautiful weather throughout,

the beach and ocean scenery on all of the islands visited was spectacular, especially those on Bermuda, where visits to the famous Horseshoe Bay Beach and St. George’s Parish were the most popular for many.

Howard and Sally Tinsman, residents of Bentwater since 1996, welcomed their grandson, Marine Sergeant Christopher Tins-man and his wife Maxine, to their home recently. Chris’s par-ents, Mark and Laura Tinsman, who reside in Erie, PA were also visiting Bentwater that week.

Upon graduation from high school in Erie, PA, in 2004, Chris joined the Marines. He completed basic training at Paris Island, and received weapons training in South Carolina. He attended additional schooling at 29 Palms, California and then on to Japan for two years.

While completing a tour of duty in Iraq, he and a fellow Marine each received a helmet liner from Bentwater Resident, Dr. Bob

Meaders, founder of Operation Helmet. Chris is now stationed at the Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, CA training others for duty in Afghanistan.

As Chris and Mark are longtime fans of the National Hotrod Association, the visit was centered on the timing of the spring nationals in nearby Baytown. The weather was perfect and everyone got to see their favorite drivers.

Howard and Sally wanted everyone to have a taste of Texas, so they took them to the Texas Opry Jamboree in Magnolia where they enjoyed barbecue and saw old-fashioned country entertain-ment. They thoroughly were impressed with Bentwater and especially enjoyed boating on Lake Conroe.

Symptoms:• Pain in and around the ear• Tenderness of the jaw• Headaches or neck aches• Clicking, popping or grating sounds when opening the mouth• Pain with chewing

DefinitionTMJ is an acronym for temporomandibular joint disorder. Often an extremely painful condition, it is caused by displace-ment of the cartilage where the lower jaw connects to the skull. This is one of the most commonly used joints in the body. (It moves every time you chew, talk or use your mouth at all.) The displacement creates a painful pressure and stretching of the associated sensory nerves. You might have TMJ if you feel like your jaw is locking or clicking, if you have a problem opening your mouth fully or if you have frequent headaches or pains in your neck. Not all causes are known. Some possible causes or contributing factors are injuries to the jaw area, various forms of arthritis, dental procedures, genetics, hormones, low-level infections, auto-immune diseases, stretching of the jaw as occurs with inserting a breathing tube before surgery, and clenching or grinding of the teeth.

- Chiropractic care works on correcting misaligned or out of place temporomandibular joints and can remove the pressure, reducing pain and improving flexibility and function. To see if chiropractic may be able to help you call (936) (441-9990) today for a complimentary consultation.
