It’s not uncommon for Bentwater resi-dents to offer acts of kindness to their neighbors: we pull in each others’ trash cans, keep an eye on our neighbors’ homes while they are on vacation and simply smile and wave as they pass by.
While we try to be good neighbors, we may be falling short in one area.
Pet owners often say their pets are just like children. So, here’s a question to ponder:
Did you, or have you, ever allowed your children to yell loudly and continuously outside, day after day? The answer is most likely “no”. So let’s remember, even if we can somehow “tune-out” our dogs when they continuously bark, our neigh-bors probably cannot.
In May, 2012, Bentwater POA Board of Trustees adopted the following policy to
address the issue of stray dogs and dog barking in Bentwater.
Please review the policy and keep in mind, it was put into place just to help us ensure we are doing all we can to be good neigh-bors and to help keep man’s best friend from becoming a nuisance. After all, we love our pets; we just need to make sure they are showing love to our neighbors.
ANIMAL CONTROL POLICY No owner shall permit any dog, cat or other domestic pet under his ownership or control to be left unattended outside such owner’s lot or allow such animal to engage in loud howling or barking, crying or whining or to conduct itself in such a manner so as to disturb the comfort and repose of any person inside the subdivision. Such pets must be housed inside the residence during the period of time the owner or person responsible for such pet is absent.

friendsAntiqueBentwater residents Debra and Tom Riley celebrated their thir-tieth wedding anniversary in the Privee room on a recent West-ern European cruise. Joining them in celebrating were Linda and John Prince, and Mary and Charles Peterson.
Privee is a small, intimate dining room found on Oceania Cruises' Marina. It has one large table seating no more than 10 guests. The room is glamorously decorated with Ferrari Red carpeting, oversized white baby crocodile throne chairs, ornate Baroque millwork, and flanked by backlit onyx-clad walls. It certainly doesn't look like any of the other dining venues on other cruise ships. At the center of the room is a custom-made white marble table, inset with a red marble accent. The room is illuminated by a white Venini glass chandelier. The Privee is on the rear of the ship with floor to ceiling ocean views.
Privee has a seven-course gourmet dinner and a staff of 15 people. The Riley’s met with Marina's Executive Chef beforehand to discuss the menu for their event. They chose an Italian theme for the dinner. The cruise line also provided a Mille Feuille Crêpe cake appropriately decorated for the occasion. A beautiful sunset provided the finishing touches for a memorable occasion.

Anniversary Cruise
Antique Friends recently had a fascinating visit to Fernland Historical Park in Montgom-ery arranged by Donna Shepherd.
We were met by the handsome
and most knowledgeable Jack Shepherd, (Donna’s husband’s uncle), who has been curator at Fernland for more than three years. Jack and his wife, Susan, have been involved in moving and restoring the log cabins and old houses in conjunction with the original owners, Carroll and Mae Tharp. The Tharps had collected houses and antiques over a 50 year period and put them on their property of 70 acres off Honea-Egypt Road. The Tharps donated it all to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. When SHSU decided it only wanted one cabin, administrators made a deal with the City of Montgomery that
if the city would move that one cabin to Huntsville they would give Montgomery all the others, and the rest is history!
Our tour started at the Arnold-Simon-ton House, built in 1845. This is the oldest house in the city of Montgomery and on the National Register of Historic Places. The house had no kitchen, no bathroom and no closets and was con-sidered a mansion.
The Hulon House was our next stop. This is an example of a Civil War-era plantation house with a typical Texas dog-trot floor plan. The house is beauti-fully furnished with items from the Civil War and Reconstruction Era.
Two cabins, one the Jardine family built in 1830, and the other built by the Crane family in 1867, certainly took you back in time and helped you visualize the hardships and trials these families must have faced every day. The cabins
were furnished with authentic antiques and furniture, and Mr. Shepherd had some interesting stories to go along with different items. As some of you may know, the Shepherds once had an antique business at the corner of Hwy. 105 and Hwy. 149; He has a vast knowl-edge of antiques and history.
Memory Park is located to one side of the buildings and is beautifully land-scaped with flowers, greenery, a waterfall, statues and a handprint wall. This was a nice surprise as most of us didn't know it was there.
We stopped close by to have lunch at Ransom's and then shopped at some of our favorite spots like the Garrett House and Hotsie-Totsie Boutique.
This day we learned history plays such an important part in our lives and that our connective link is through our stories of the past and present.
The bell tower and caldron.

Bentwater resident Annette Young discovered a love for painting as an adult, but often draws from childhood memories to bring a piece of canvas to life.Young’s formal art training began with Esther Cheat-man's Studio in the Heights of Houston. She furthered the development of painting in oils and water colors at Lone Star College, Sam Houston State University, Judy Crowe Studio in Tomball, Texas, and various watercolor studios in the Cham-pion Forrest Area of Houston.
“Some of the principles of art such as unity, balance, rhythm and proportion, combined with the elements of art, such as space, color, shape, and value were the most important lessons in my first oil painting class. I have always tried to apply this information in creation of my art. Throughout the years I experienced phases of different techniques in different mediums from oil paintings to watercolor
paintings, applying washes and negative space,” said Young.
Young enjoys giving her paintings to organizations for fundraisers, such as the Parents as Teachers Program of Schul-enburg, Texas, and St. Mary's Annual Bazaar. “The money raised through my paintings really sets the bar that an
Annette Young
individual not only is contributing for a worthy cause but appreciates my work,” said Young. “My most cherished accom-plishment is to communicate what I have learned to several of the lady residents here in Bentwater.”
Young is currently a member of the Bren-ham Art League.

Spring has sprung! What beautiful landscaping in our community. THIS IS THE LIFE!OF BENTWATER
The BCA is once again providing data on its website (www.bentwatercivic.com) that will help you evaluate your 2013 prop-erty taxes. No matter what your ability to pay property taxes may be, it makes no sense that anyone should pay more than is fair and right. Each of us will receive our Property Appraisal Value – which is used to determine the property taxes we pay – from the Montgomery County Appraisal District (MCAD) in early May. The question will be: Is the value fair and right, and if not, should I appeal the value to the MCAD?
We all have our own stories regarding our dealings with the MCAD, both good and bad. We may not like and/or agree with the appraisal process used by the MCAD, but we’re not likely to change it and we need to be armed with data that will allow us to work within their process. The process used by MCAD to determine appraisal values is based on the same concepts used every day in real estate to establish fair market value. The MCAD compares your property against recent home sales (“comps”) in Bentwater and makes appropriate adjustments to establish what should be the fair market value (referred to as Appraisal Value) of your property. The concept is a good one, but it can be flawed by the fact that the MCAD has divided Bentwater into 65 separate, distinguishable “neighborhoods” or real estate markets. This often leads to difficulties in the selec-
tion of comps in a given neighborhood, such as not enough comps and/or comps that are not recent and/or comps that are not appropriate. This unfortunately can lead to inappropriate and overinflated appraisal values. You may even find that you and your neighbor have substantially different appraisals as a result of being in different neighborhoods.
The BCA attempts to arm you with the information needed to work within the MCAD appraisal process. For each of the neighborhoods in Bentwater, we provide the proposed 2013 Appraisals for all homes, along with any resales (comps) in the last three years. With this data in hand, you can first decide if your appraisal stands-out versus other appraisals in your neighborhood.
The BCA will be holding a Tax Seminar on April 30 at 7 p.m. at the Yacht Club to discuss these and other ideas that should help you tackle your taxes. One last piece of advice: You may find that MCAD has determined to keep your appraisal at the same value as last year. Don’t be too satisfied; the value still may not be fair for what’s going on in the neighborhood. Always approach your appraisal as being too high and satisfy yourself that it is fair. Go to the BCA website and find out what’s going on in your neighborhood.

BLOBentwaterLadies Organization
A recent BLO luncheon featured a style show with fashions provided by Hotsie Totsie of Montgomery, owned by Bentwater residents Cathy Wilson and Selinda Simpson. The clothes and acces-sories were modeled by many of BLO’s past presidents. BLO is celebrating its 20th year in Bentwater! What a treat to mark this anniversary with so many of the ladies who worked hard to make the BLO successful, and we are all very grate-ful for their contribution.
Many exciting events are on the horizon:
On April 8, BLO will be treated to a delicious food demonstration by Fortino Godinez of Hubbell and Hudson. Don’t miss it! If you are new to Bentwater you may join us with a special reserved seat. Just call Anne Davis at 713-826-0509 or Carla Cook at 936-597-9238. As chairs of the Newcomers committee they are
eager to meet you and acquaint you with our organization. Membership in the BLO is a great way to meet new people.
BLO recently celebrated with a Go Tex-an theme luncheon. Ladies wore western wear while enjoying a program of western dancing by Laura Balmaceda of Affinity Ballroom in The Woodlands.
Looking ahead, the Businesswomen of Bentwater luncheon will be May 14 fea-turing Susan Fruit, author and interior decorator. This is one of the favorite luncheons of the year as Bentwater ladies who own businesses have the opportunity to share information about their products and services. If you are a businesswoman of Bentwater and would like your busi-ness to sponsor a table please e-mail Debby Capps at [email protected].
BLO activities are always in full swing.
-The Art to Lunch group viewed the Pra-do exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and then dined at Phillipe on Post Oak.
-The dining groups: Casual Dining-in, Casual Dining-out and Gourmet are get-ting together.
-Plans are now being made for the BLO annual gambling and golf bus trip to L’Auberge du Lac Casino in Lake Charles, LA. The trip is scheduled for October 23 and 24. It may seem like a long way off, but reservations are already being taken at the BLO luncheons or by e-mailing Ann Pittman at [email protected] or Annette Young at [email protected]. It is a fun event with the ladies playing bingo on the bus from Bentwater to Louisiana and back again. Upon arrival, some of the ladies enjoy a game of golf while the rest just hit the casino.

Music to make you smile and laugh – A Bentwater Tradition
Bentwater City Limits lit up the Yacht Club three amazing nights in a row, per-forming hit songs of the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's and even a few fun 80's tunes! The group of 40 beautiful Bentwater voices took the crowd from Big Band to Rock and Roll, to the Beach Boys and the Bea-tles. Residents had so much fun, several got up to dance the night away. The songs brought back fun memories for many in the crowd, creating laughter at the tables. The live band concert was designed to give Bentwater residents a wonderful evening
of food and fellowship and to raise money for The American Cancer Society.
Many residents commented on the amaz-ing job done by the director, the very tal-ented Keith Ann Gearn.
If you are interested in becoming a part of the Bentwater City Limits Singers, or want more information, contact Keith Ann by email at [email protected].

The Texas Forest Service is reporting a loss of nearly a half billion trees due to the drought that started in 2011. Unfortu-nately Bentwater residents are seeing first hand the effects of the drought on what used to be green in our community. The POA is currently working to remove the dead trees from the common areas.
The POA is doing what it can to identify dead trees on property owner sites as well, so we can notify the residents. We ask that homeowners be patient throughout this process and lend a hand if possible. If you spot a dead tree that may be dangerous to others, please let us know the location.
There are several ways to check your trees for drought symptoms, according to the Texas Forest Service. The tips of leaves will brown or burn, and whole leaves will brown but not fall off the tree. That’s a bad sign during the summer months.
You can also check the small twigs at the end of branches. As much as 20 percent
Dead TreesHelp Us Keep Bentwater Beautiful
of a tree’s “food” is manufactured in these twigs. Pull one off and scratch it. If there’s a green layer beneath the exterior, the tree is alive even if its leaves are brown.
If there’s not a green layer, check twigs higher up. If they are not green, chances are the tree is dead.
The only way to save dying trees is to water them. Sprinkler systems generally only wet the top inch or two of lawns, but trees need water to reach 6 to 8 inches below ground.
A good test of this is to try sticking a screwdriver into the ground. If it will penetrate 6 inches deep the trees are probably getting enough water. If it will not, they’re probably not getting the water they need.
For more information on how to deter-mine if your tree is dead or alive, visit the Texas Forest Service website at texasfor-estservice.tamu.edu.

garden club
The Bentwater Garden Club gathered at the Country Club for their first meeting of 2013 to enjoy lunch and a panel discussion program. The three panelists consisted of Bentwater residents with expertise in various gardening areas: Abe McCoy and Can-dice Frazier are Master Gardeners and work extensively with the Montgomery County Extension Service; Charles Caillouet is an avid gardener and knows a lot about trees as well as other plants.
Members were encouraged to bring questions, gardening prob-lems and suggestions and were rewarded with sound advice and valuable answers. The topics included soil preparation and test-ing, pruning techniques and timing, various turf types, trees, and shrubs. The panel challenged the group with a quiz about plants and rewarded the winners with plants selected for our area.
One particular question and answer brought lots of smiles: “What is one of the greatest crimes committed in Bentwater? Answer: the dreaded Crape Murder!” Crape murder refers to the prac-tice of chopping off the top of crepe myrtle branches – leaving unsightly knobs to form at the growth line. The panel emphasized using plants that are well-adapted to our area, such as the Texas Super Stars line of products. Another resource for plant informa-tion is the Montgomery County Master Gardeners website:http://www.mcmgatexas.org
Five lucky ladies won door prizes. Amy Hammett, Sue Hel-terbran, Lynn Guilbault, Gerry Titus and Sherrie Waggoner received small potted plants ready to plant now.
Spring is a favorite season for gardeners and the Bentwater Garden Club has planned an active schedule this year. In March their program featured a guest speaker specializing in water gardening. April will bring the ever-popular field trip. And in May, the final meeting before the summer break, mem-bers will have the opportunity to tour the home gardens of their Bentwater neighbors.
Membership dues for the Bentwater Garden Club are only $15.00 per year and new members are always welcome. Contact Pat Edwards at 936-449-6139 or [email protected] for more information.

Dear Property Owner:
When you decided to call Bentwater home, you did so because you knew it would offer the quality of life you wanted and a community with picturesque beauty, complete with the state-of-the art facilities, beautiful golf courses and friendly neighbors.
Keeping Bentwater beautiful is not something that magically happens; it is due to the hard work of our amazing employ-ees and you, responsible homeowners, who fulfill your roles in caring for your part in the Bentwater masterpiece. In other words… it takes a village.
Each role is significant, and if left incomplete or forgotten, bears a burden to others and a negative reflection on all. It is impor-
tant that you ensure your area of responsibility is consistent with the beauty and the deed restrictions of Bentwater.
As removal of trash, debris and recycled materials from your residence promotes beauty, the timely return of the containers to storage outside of public and neighbors’ view further contributes to your responsibility to the whole. In the event you are unable to return your container in a timely fashion, coordinate this beautification role with others who can assist you. Be a good neighbor; offer the same service to someone else.
While your guests are able to enjoy and share in life in Bentwater, it is vital that all vehicles inside our gates display the appropriate decal or authorized pass on the dashboard throughout the dura-tion of their Bentwater stay. Vehicles not correctly marked will be assumed to be not authorized and trespassing into our communi-ty. Please remind your guests of this policy, maintain your vehicles with the appropriate decal and contact us in the event you notice a vehicle that is not clearly authorized to be in our community.
If your vehicle decal is worn and needs replacing, come see us and we will be happy to place a new one on your windshield.
Keeping the streets clearly open overnight assists in safety, health and beauty of all those who drive, walk or reside in Bentwater. Vehicles with decals should never be parked in the street overnight.
In the event you are contacted for your assistance in maintain-ing the beauty of Bentwater by fulfilling your responsibilities, please note that others receive that notification as well. Our notification letters contain information that we are required to provide you. We are here to help support you in your role of keeping Bentwater a masterpiece by informing you of problems you may not even be aware of.
Remember, this is your home, your neighborhood, your Bentwa-ter. It takes a village; we are in this together to create the best of Bentwater Life.
Best Regards, Dawn M. Cleboski
Bentwater resident Alexandra Hicks is not just another pretty face. She’s a woman on a mission to help other ladies go from “rolling out of bed” to “runway ready” and feel they are worth it.
Hicks recently opened Goddess Hair and Makeup Salon in Conroe, but it’s not your typical highlights and blow dry shop. Sure, Goddess Salon offers what the other salons do, but it also specializes in hair and skin care for people dealing with cancer and other illnesses that may cause unwanted effects on their outer appearances.
Hicks is currently undergoing treatment for skin cancer; she was also treated for another form of cancer in 2000.
“During that time I started losing my hair, and that was hard. Then I started buying wigs and it really made me feel better. That time in my life led to a strong passion for hair alternatives: wigs, half wigs… the options are amazing,” said Hicks.
Goddess Salon is bringing these endless options to clients in a private, personal way.
Brianna Gorman (stylist), and Alexandra Hicks (owner)
“We offer private booths where you can come in, have your makeup done, be fitted for a wig and not have to do it while everyone is watching,” said Hicks. “We’re not just offering pri-vacy, but VIP treatment.”
Goddess Salon is also offering etiquette classes and birthday parties, and the latest trends in hair accessories.
Hicks is not a licensed hair stylist, so when she decided to open a new salon, she knew she needed to team up with the best people to help her fulfill her vision. She didn’t have to go far to find Brianna Gorman, another Bentwater resident.
“When she asked me to join her in opening this salon, it was a ‘no brainer’. Making people feel better is so important to me,” said Gorman.
And they believe it is important to show… there’s a goddess in every woman.
Because there’s a goddess in every woman

Have you ever ordered pizza at night and the delivery guy had a hard time finding your house? That’s a minor inconvenience. But imagine if you need-ed emergency care and the ambulance driver had the same problem. That is an obstacle that could turn into a life or death situation.
How easy is your house to find?
The Architectural Control Committee of the Bentwater POA adopted a House Number Policy Resolution in May, 2012 that states approved homesites in
Bentwater must be accompanied by an application to place a house number on the home that is clear and visible from the street day and night and must be installed prior to occupancy.
Please make sure your house number is large enough to see in the daytime hours and is clear and visible from the street at night.
To view samples of approved house number options please stop by the POA office Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bentwater is doing a fantastic job with recycling efforts! Waste Management has reported that residents here in Bent-water collected 919,775 pounds of recycle trash in 2012. That's an average of 536 pounds per home and represents 28% of all trash collected within MUD 18. Our average recycle weight is 60% higher than the community we were compared to in a recent benchmarking study.
In 2012 Waste Management did two cart counts in Bentwater. We averaged about 900 carts being placed on the curb for recycle pickup, a little more than 50% of total households. Considering we have many weekenders as well as residents who only put out the recycle cart when it gets full, our current level of participation is reasonable. However, we can strive for even greater participation. While many residents support recycling, some resi-dents may not realize all the items that
can be recycled. Your January bill includ-ed a handy reference flyer that included all the items that can be recycled. Some recycling reminders:
• Acceptable Items: juice boxes, glass bottles and jars, tin/steel cans (including large coffee cans), metal 2 feet or less in length, paper board, magazines, alumi-num cans, 12" x 12" card board, news-paper, junk mail and plastic with codes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7. The top of the yellow lid has a table of acceptable items to serve as a handy quick reference guide.
• Unacceptable Items: Wire, wood, foil, plastic wrap, plastic bags and Styrofoam. (Note: flexible bags can be recycled at most grocery stores, including Kroger and HEB.)
Many residents have found that they save money by purchasing far fewer garbage bags than they bought prior to recycling.

How Are We Doing with Recycling?
MUD 18 –
We should be very proud of our commu-nity. Keep up the great work!
As announced in previous reports from MUD 18, the 2012 tax rate was reduced from $0.43 to $0.38 per $100 of assessed value. Your tax bill is calculated partly by the tax rate and also by the certified assessed value of your home as of January 1, 2012, determined by the Montgomery County Appraisal District (MCAD). In some cases the assessed value is lowered from the
previous year; other cases it is increased. So in comparing your total taxes due in 2012 compared to 2011, you should consider changes to both factors. An interesting point for comparison is the change in the average MUD 18 tax bill. In 2011, the average tax bill was $1,852. In 2012, the average is $1,666. The 2012 tax bill was due in January. Late payments will incur fees.
How Does Your MUD Tax Bill Compare?
MUD 18 – Taxes
Due to the large area and topography of Bentwater, our com-munity requires the use of sewer pump (lift) stations. There are currently 26 lift stations in Bentwater. After the power outage experienced during Hurricane Ike, MUD 18 Board members authorized a study to prioritize those lift stations which are most at risk during long term power outages. This study is updated annually to take into consideration any new development. At the present time, thirteen lift stations are equipped with gas genera-tors. By the beginning of the 2013 hurricane season, there will be a total of 15 generators installed to provide power at the most vulnerable stations. This will enable the operator to use the Dis-trict's portable diesel generator to avoid problems at the remain-ing lift stations. The District's 5 year plan will continue to be updated as need is identified and funding is available.
Additional Gas Generators to be Installed Prior to Hurricane Season.

Spotlight on Bentwater Residents Ray and Karen SolcherBy Lee Rushing, Senior PastorNorth Shore Church
North ShoreChurch
“What did you see?” said the deaf son to his dad. “I saw deaf children.” After a trip to Chile in 2002 with his son, Bentwater resident Ray Solcher and his son founded Hearing Aid for Latin America (“HALA”) to take the gift of hearing to underprivi-leged children and young adults.
Due to insufficient medical care, the incidence of deafness in Latin America is very high. Resources to help are severely lim-ited, if they exist at all. In the past ten years, HALA has now tested and fitted more than 6,000 hearing aids on mostly chil-dren and young adults.
Ray and Karen Solcher are proud residents of Bentwater, and are members at North Shore Church located just outside the Bentwater West Gate. HALA is working in partnership with North Shore Church. Their inspiration for HALA comes from what they call the “Hearing Smile.” Their reward is the look of happiness and amazement when a child hears for the first time. Please check out their website at www.latinhearing.org.
New opportunities for helping more children hear for the first time are developing, with one that is very unique to HALA.
Trips to the Dominican Republic and Western Samoa are being explored at this time. HALA has recently received a request from the US Navy to provide hearing aids on a Mercy Ship traveling to Western Samoa in late May 2013.
When they go to a location, they take everything needed to test hearing, make impressions, form ear molds and fit aids. They look for and train local help who can continue the necessary ongoing service needed with giving batteries, fixing tubes on aids, and trading broken aids for working one.
HALA will take any used hearing aids in any condition. If they cannot be fixed, they have a partnership with a foundation that trades them for working aids. If you have some used hear-ing aids and batteries that you would like to donate to HALA, please contact Ray and Karen Solcher at [email protected]. You may also contact North Shore Church, and schedule a time to drop off your hearing aids.
God is using Bentwater residents like Ray and Karen Solcher to make a difference in the world by helping many others to hear for the first time … and making the world a better place to live.

Ann and Michael BeckThe Becks, like many others in the oil business that traveled the world before settling in Bentwater (also know as Heaven – Level One), have grandchildren nearby. Their two sons and four grandsons live in the Champions Spring area and Fall Creek. An Exxon family, they lived abroad in Jakarta, Indonesia and Papua, New Guinea as well as in the states: in Denver, CO and Washington D. C. They are looking forward to meeting every-one and enjoying the beauty and serenity of Bentwater.
Relocating to Bentwater from Austin, TX where they spent seven and a half years, the Zellers have also lived in San Pan-cho and Rincon de Guayabitos, Mexico and Spring, TX. He is retired from Kroger Food Stores after 42 years. Louise and John met when they both worked at Kroger. She later owned a Hallmark store in Houston. Welcome to Bentwater!

What an interesting couple. They both are pilots; she is flying for United Air-lines while he is flying for Delta Airlines. But this is not their first time to be in the pilot’s seat. She flew C-141s while he flew KC135s , both for the U. S. Air Force. Join us in our appreciation for their service to our country!
They are also new empty-nesters as their four children (these are busy parents, folks) are currently living and learning

Whew, no wonder they are looking forward to spending their downtime on the golf course and tennis courts in Bentwater. Let’s welcome this ener-getic couple!

North Shore Republican Women began the new year with sev-eral activities. A wine and cheese party was held at the home of Carolyn Jones, and Alice Sweeney opened her home for a brunch. Back in the day…a system that was low on Freon would get a charge of R22 until it leaked out again. Now with the rising cost and limited
supply of R22-consider nding and xing the leak or replace with the new R410A refrigerant.
The Bentwater Montgomery County United Way Leadership Committee sincerely thanks the people of Bentwater for their generosity in the recently concluded 2012 United Way fundrais-ing campaign.
The campaign kicked off last September and pledges were accepted through March of this year.
“As of the February 25 deadline for this issue of Bentwater Life, Bentwater residents had pledged nearly 96 percent of the 2012 campaign goal of $147,000 with more than four weeks of counting remaining,” 2012 Campaign Chairperson Patti Mennes reported. “Bentwater has once again shown the com-munity that it cares for others.”
“Every dollar contributed in Bentwater,” Mennes added, “will help Montgomery County United Way achieve its goals, such as helping lift local people out of poverty, providing access to afford-able and quality healthcare for those in need, making short-term assistance available to people facing emergency crises, and helping prevent and treat alcohol and drug abuse.”

It’s that time of year again when we see our landscape coming to life and we begin making plans to keep it alive and well. The major factor in keeping our landscape in good shape is irrigation and this requires using a lot of our precious water.
up to 50% - in the irrigation operation. There are many things that can be done to conserve irrigation water, including types of landscape, but let’s concentrate on the irrigation process itself.
It is important to do a regular maintenance check – once each month - on your irrigation system. Turn on your sprinklers dur-ing daylight hours to inspect the system for missing, broken, clogged or misaligned sprinkler heads. Make sure heads are not watering the concrete and are reaching areas you want.
The biggest dilemma we all face is deciding “when” and “how much” to water our landscape. It was demonstrated during the Water Wise program that properly applying no more than 1-inch of water per week is enough irrigation to maintain a healthy landscape during the summer months. In the spring and fall, it requires less irrigation. The real issue is how we effectively get that 1-inch of water to the roots of our plants and lawns. The worst thing you can do is water often with short time cycles; this will result in significant evaporation and a plant root system starving for water near the surface of the soil. The only way to get a deeper, healthier root system is to use longer watering cycles that give the water a chance to soak in.
To learn more about the Water Wise program and get some good tips on conserving water, go to the Bentwater Civic Association website (www.bentwatercivic.com ) and the MUD 18 website (www.mcmud18.com ).
Unlike many Texans, we live in a community that has plenty of water supplies, so it’s difficult to convince folks to conserve. There are a couple of good reasons to be Water Wise. First, it’s the right thing to do. We draw our water from aquifers and it’s a fact that we are using that water faster than it is being replaced. In essence, we are using water that belongs to future generations. Secondly, we have an opportunity to demonstrate to our larger Lake Conroe community that conserving water is achievable and easy to do. With the Woodlands and the City of Conroe beginning to withdraw water from Lake Conroe for up to 30% of their needs starting in 2016, it’s difficult to envision how the lake can maintain its current state. We can only hope that the larger community wises up and begins conserving water. So yes, we have lots of water in Bentwater, but there are plenty of good reasons to be Water Wise in using it.
We have studied how homeowners use water in Bentwater (in the Water Wise program) and it’s clear that irrigation consumes 2/3 of our water, and it’s also clear that we waste a lot of water –
Make sure all sprinkler heads are working properly

greaterA lower level of indebtedness can trans-late into real-life savings for many of us. If you’ve lowered your debt payments noticeably — what should you do with this “found” money?
Of course, you could spend it on mate-rial objects, which, in some cases, may make your life more pleasant today. But you’d probably be better off by devoting your financial resources to your goals for tomorrow, such as college for your chil-dren and, eventually, a comfortable retire-ment lifestyle for yourself.
Consequently, you may want to consider these suggestions:
Increase your contributions to your retire-ment plan. Try to put more money into your employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b). Your contributions are typically made with pretax dollars, so the more you invest, the
lower debt levels mean
lower your taxable income. Plus, your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis.
Fully fund your IRA. You can put in up to $5,000 per year (as of 2012) to a tra-ditional or Roth IRA, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. A traditional IRA grows tax-deferred, while a Roth IRA can grow tax-free, provided you meet certain conditions.
Fill in “gaps” in your financial strategy. For example, do you have sufficient life insur-ance and disability income insurance? Or can you add some investments that can help diversify your overall portfolio? While diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss, it can help reduce the effects of volatility on your holdings.
Build an emergency fund. It’s a good idea to build an emergency fund con-taining six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses. Without such a fund, you may be forced to dip into long-term invest-
ments to pay for unexpected costs, such as a large bill from the doctor or a major car repair. Keep the money in a liquid, low-risk account.
Establish a 529 plan. If you have chil-dren or grandchildren whom you would like to help get through college, you might want to contribute to a 529 plan. Your earnings grow tax-free, provided withdrawals are used for qualified higher education expenses. Plus, your contribu-tions may be deductible from your state taxes. (Be aware, though, that withdraw-als used for purposes other than qualified education expenses may be subject to fed-eral and state taxes, plus a 10% penalty.)
Reducing your debt level can remove some stress from your life. And you’ll gain even more benefits from debt reduction by using your savings to speed your progress toward your important financial goals.

INvESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES
In the past few years, Americans have done a pretty good job of whittling down their debt load. If you’re in this group, you may now have a chance to use your lower level of indebtedness to your advantage — by investing for the future.
