A Note FromJeanne’s Journal
In 2009, Belmont Villagecommissioned nationallyrecognized photographer ThomasSanders to create photographicportraits of our residents who areveterans. Ever since then, thesephotos and a piece of eachveteran’s story have been proudlydisplayed in our American HeroesGallery, located on the secondfloor at our community.
In June of this year, we onceagain commissioned ThomasSanders to return to ourcommunities and update ourAmerican Heroes Gallery. ThomasSanders is a Los Angeles-basedphotographer who embarked on apersonal mission more than nineyears ago to capture and preservethe images and stories of WorldWar II veterans. He has sincephotographed over one thousandveterans.
In 2010, Welcome Bookspublished a collection of ThomasSanders’ photos of WWII Veteranscalled The Last Good War: TheFaces and Voices of WWII. Whenthe book was first published, Ihad the honor of giving my father(a WWII Veteran) a copy ofThomas’ autographed book. I willnever forget my dad’soverwhelming emotionalresponse to the photographs
contained in the book. Like somany other veterans I have met,my dad didn’t view himself as ahero; but I do. As we flippedthrough the pages of the booktogether and through tear-stainedeyes, my dad shared stories ofboyhood friends who hadsacrificed their lives by fighting sobravely to defend our country. Mydad never spoke of his warexperience and clearly thiscollection of photographs hadevoked deep rooted memoriesfor him.
If you were unable to attend theceremony and unveilingcelebration this past month, Iinvite you to come and visit ourGallery at any time. On behalf ofBelmont Village, we thank ourVeterans for their sacrifices andservice. Without a doubt you willalways be forever more, ourAmerican Heroes.
THE LAST GOOD WARby Thomas Sanders

COLORECTAL CANCER: Mostcolon and rectal cancers arise frombenign growths called polyps.Screening can catch polyps beforethey turn into cancer. Adults over50 should be screened regularly.Four options exist for screening:Fecal occult blood testing (FOBT),annually: This is a simple testwhich is performed at home. Itinvolves taking samples fromthree consecutive bowelmovements. Flexiblesigmoidoscopy is done every 5years. A sigmoidoscope is aflexible tube with a tiny cameraon the end, which a doctor canuse to examine the inside of therectum and lower part of thecolon. This test can be performedright in the doctor’s office.Colonoscopy is done every tenyears. Colonoscopy uses a tinycamera to examine the entirecolon. This procedure will take
only half an hour but will requireanesthesia. Double ContrastBarium Enema is done every 5years. It involves drinking aspecial substance which makes acolon more visible on an X-ray.
BREAST CANCER: Women over40 should have a mammogramevery one to two years. Amammogram is a simple X-raytest designed to rule out breastcancer. It involves gentlyflattening the breast on an X-rayplate and then taking a quickradiograph. A 10 minute examthat could save your life.

The two testscommonly used are PSA BloodTest and Digital Rectal Exam.
