SYNOPSIS

“Bedrooms”isanevocativedramaaboutthewallsthatseparatepeople,theheartbreakandinfidelitythatareoftentheresultandtheredemptionthatispossiblewhenwechoosetospeakthetruthandtearthosewallsdown.

Auniquecollaborationamongacollectiveofindependentfilmmakers,“Bedrooms”istoldinfourdistinctstoriessetinfourbedrooms.

Inonestory,MoonBloodgood(“TerminatorSalvation”)andJordanBelfi(“Entourage”)playahusbandandwifeatthecriticalturningpointoftheiryoungrelationship.Inanother,JulieBenz(“Dexter”)andXanderBerkeley(“Terminator2:JudgmentDay”)areahusbandandwifedesperatelytryingtorecoverfrominfidelity,whileJesseGarcia(“Quinceañera”)playsapizzadeliveryboywhounwittinglybecomesthecatalystfortheultimateresolutionoftheirmaritalconflict.

Inthethirdstory,DeeWallace(“E.T.:TheExtra‐Terrestrial”)andBarryBostwick(“SpinCity”)playaretiredcouplecomingtotheendofalongandunusualextra‐maritalaffair.Andinthelaststory,SarahClarke(“Twilight”)playsarecentlydivorcedmotheroftenyearoldtwinswhodecidetocreatetheirownseparatespacesintheroomtheysharebybuildingawalloutofalltheirtoys.

“Bedrooms”isacomic,sweetandgutwrenchingexplorationofhumanrelationships,theirmyriadcomplicationsandthedailychoicewefacetoeithermakethemworkortomoveon.

FILMMAKERS’STATEMENT

WhenYoussefDelaracalledagatheringoffilmmakerfriendsandcolleaguestopresentoneofhis“crazy”newideas,Iarrivedreadytoplaytheskeptic,mytraditionalroleinourcreativecollaborationsincetheearlydaysofourfirstseriousshortfilm,“Air.”Youssef’sideawassimple.Designafilmprojectthatwillattractawellknowncastbutthatcanalsobeshotonamicro‐budgetwithoutsacrificingproductionvalue.Withtherightteamworkingtogetherontherightproject,hebelievedwecoulddoitinafractionofthetimeitnormallytakestomountacredible,commerciallyviablefilm. Weconcludedthatthekeystoattachinggreatcasttoamicro‐budgetfeaturewastogivethemgreatwritingandcharactersbutaskthemeachtocommitaveryshortamountoftimetotheproduction.Withthisinmind,werealizedthatthebestwaytoaccomplishthiswastobuildthefilmfrommultiple,independentnarrativesthatcouldsomehowbethreadedtogetherintoonethematicallycohesivestory.Thiswouldallowustodividethecreativeworkamongacollectiveofwriters,directorsandeventuallyactors,allworkingsidebysideonwhatwereeffectivelyfourshortfilms,whileusingtheeconomiesofscaleofafeaturefilmproductiontomaximizeeachindividualstory’sproductionvalue.Thisprocessofsimultaneousdeconstructionandreconstructionwasagreatinnovationintheory,butnoneofushadeveractuallydoneit. Weknewitwouldhavetostartwithascriptwhichwastobewrittenbyfourwritersworkingseparately.Tofacilitatetheprocessandtomakesureweendedupwithstoriesthatwereindividuallyoriginalbutcollectivelycoherent,weestablishedcertainnarrativeparametersthefourwriterswouldberequiredtoadheretoincraftingtheirscripts.Onthecreativeside,wewantedstorieswithacommon universaltheme,onethatartistsandaudienceshavealwaysandwillalways,relateto.Ontheproductionside,wewantedstoriesthatwereintimateandcontained,inordertolimitthenumberoflocationsandactorsandhelpustoconcentrateourresourcesasmuchaspossible.Thefinalparameterswerethese: each scriptwouldbeapproximately20‐25pageslong, eachwouldbesetinoneandonlyonelocation,abedroom,andeachwouldhavenomorethantwomajorcharactersandoneminorcharacter.Usingthisbasicframeworkwearrivedatafinalscriptthatfarexceededevenourmostoptimisticexpectations,onethatwasthematicallyrich,dramaticallycompellingand,aswewouldlaterdiscover,easilyattractedanincrediblecast. Withourscriptinplace,wesetouttoattachcastandraisefinancing.Toourpleasantsurprise,theproduction,drivenbyasuperbscript,felltogetherveryquickly.Withinthreemonthsoffinalizingthescript,withtheenthusiasticinvolvementofagrowingteamofproducers,financiersandcreativecollaboratorswewereabletoraisethefunds,mounttheproductionandultimatelybring“Bedrooms”tolife.

Youssef’sinitialhypothesisthatagroupofdedicatedindependentfilmmakersworkingcollectivelyandpassionatelycouldproduceahighquality,lowcostfeaturefilm,fromconcepttofinaldeliverywasprovedrightandturnedeventhebiggestskepticintoabeliever.

XanderBerkeley(Harry)–BerkeleywasborninBrooklyn,NewYork.BerkeleywenttoHampshireCollegeandworkedinthetheatreswithinitsfive‐collegesystem.BerkeleyworkedintheRegionalandRepertoryTheatersinadditiontoOffBroadwaywhilelivinginNewYork.Despiteaclassicallytrainedtheaterbackground,hewasincreasinglydrawntothesubtletiesoffilmacting.AplaywrittenbyReynoldsPricecalled"EarlyDark"hadsuchacinematicfeeltoit,thatanagentsawtheactingpotentialinBerkeleyandencouragedhimtomakethemoveoutwest.

SarahClarke(Janet)–ClarkewasborninSt.Louis,MissouriandattendedIndianaUniversity,whereshestudiedFineArtsandItalian.ClarkefirstbecameinterestedinactingwhilestudyingabroadduringhersenioryearinBologna,Italy.UponreturningtotheUnitedStates,shebeganstudyingarchitecturalphotography.Shereceivedfreeactinglessonsinreturnfortakingphotographsofaculturalartscenter,andshestudiedactingatCircleintheSquareTheatreSchool,AxisTheaterCompany,andTheWillowCabinTheatreCompany.

Clarkebeganheractingcareerwithanappearanceina1999award‐winningcommercialforVolkswagen.Shefollowedthiswitharoleinthe2000shortfilm“Pasdedeux”andreceivedanOutstandingPerformanceawardattheBrooklynFilmFestival.Clarke'scareersoonblossomedwithminorroles,includingfilms“AllAboutGeorge”in2000and“TheAccidentin2001”,aswellastelevisionshowssuchas“Ed”and“SexandtheCity”.

In2001,ClarkeauditionedfortheroleofCTUagentNinaMyerson“24”.Shewontheroleonthedaythatfilmingbegan.Thewardrobedepartmentdidn'thavetimetofither,soshehadtowearherownoutfitfortheentireseasonoffilming.Inherthreeseasonswiththeshow,Clarkewasfeaturedinatotalof36episodes.ClarkewonaGoldenSatelliteAwardforBestPerformancebyanActressinaSupportingRoleinaDramaSeriesforthisrole.Clarke’sothernotabletelevisionrolesincludeaseriesregularroleon“TrustMe”alongsideEricMcCormackandThomasCavanagh,andguestroleson“House”and“Life”.
