Hello there.

Summer is finally upon us and that means the summer vacationers are here for their annual visit and local businesses are the best they’ve been all year. The condos are booked, the beaches are filled and the restaurant lines are long, but they’re definitely worth the wait. People travel from all over to get some of the famous Gulf Coast seafood or to lounge on the white sands of our beaches. Summer is defi-nitely a great time to be visiting or living on the Gulf Coast and it’s hard to find time to be bored. Check out some of the beach’s live local music, or if you’re more of the adventurous type, take a flight on Beach Flight Aviation at the Jack Edwards Airport. Events like the Sunset Festi-val at The Wharf on Thursday nights and the fun beach activities that happen daily at Tacky Jacks are sure to keep the whole family entertained all summer.

Take a flight on the beach with a pilot guided aircraftBy Destiny [email protected]

For those on the adventurous side who are looking for a new experience this sum-mer, Beach Flight Aviation invites flight

goers to join them on a guided tour in the sky. Beach Flight is a flight school out of Jack Edwards Airport that gives one-on-one lessons on flying a sport, ultra light, recreational air-craft over some of the highlights of beautiful Baldwin County.

Gary Berdeaux, owner and in-structor of Beach Flight Aviation, began flying more than 25 years ago and specializes in the aircraft that he promotes.

These aircraft look different that your typical airplane or hang glider. Each aircraft has two seats with a motor behind it. These have been named weight shifter control aircraft by the AFA, but those who pilot these refer to them as “trikes.”

“Another nickname people have given them are “motorcycles in the sky,” Berdeaux said. “It's like a motorcycle because you can travel long distances and have a lot of fun on them. You just don't want to take

them into bad weatherAll of the flights are guided by Berdeaux or his co-

instructor, Tony Castillo, also an experienced pilot.“I am really pleased that Tony is helping me

provide plenty of good instruction,” Berdeaux said.

The aircraft used at Beach Flight Aviation is factory built and made by P and M Aviation in the United

Kingdom. The company has made these aircrafts for more than 30 years

and have more than 4,000 aircraft worldwide. This particular manufacturer has most of the

speed, cross country distance and more awards internationally.

“They have flown these craft around the globe, over Mount Everest and they are the fastest, most sophisti-cated type of this aircraft there is,” Berdeaux said.

As for safety, each aircraft goes through a routine inspection by a certified aircraft mechanic after every few trips.

The “trikes” are one of two types of aircraft besides the helicopter than can go below 500 feet to the ground.

“These can fly low and slow enough that if someone’s cooking a steak on the grill, you could smell it and tell what kind of steak it is,” Berdeaux said.

PHOTOS SUBMITTED BY BEACH FLIGHT AVIATION

6 Beachin’ June 2015 GulfVisitorGuide.com

Berdeaux warns that no one should feel intimated and look at the flight as an instruction session with a test.

“These flights are meant to be fun,” Berdeaux said. “We primarily go over the beach, but we can also go north to the sod fields and then on to Fairhope. It's a pretty area over there, but most folks want to see the beach.”

The flights range in time and distance, and premium flights are offered for those wanting to travel a longer distance.

“We pretty much fly from the end of Ono Island to the east all the way to the end of Fort Morgan,” Berdeaux said. “But, we'll hop over on our premium hour and a half and we'll go over to Dauphin Island in Mobile and some of the beaches there. Panoramic doesn't even describe it. Everywhere you look is like ‘Wow, look at that.’”

As for age limits, there is no upper limit.“You get a lot of older people who want to have a little

fun,” Berdeaux said. “We love what we do and we have a lot of passion for it, but we would never sacrifice safety or flying conditions that aren't safe.”

In less than a year, Beach Flight Aviation has risen the third highest rated attraction on Tripadvisor.

“There are two philosophies,” Berdeaux said. “Some people like to buy things and some people like to buy experiences. It’s about having a unique experience and something you don’t do every day that's significant enough to stick around in your memory for a while.”

In addition to his passion for flight, Berdeaux is also a graphic design artist and photographer. He owns part of the tourist attraction, “Diamond Taverns,” a show cave in Kentucky.

“It's a unique experience to live or travel here and we provide access to these experiences in a very profes-sional safe and dedicated manner,” Berdeaux said.

Off the beaten path, but not too far, is the new addition of camping to the Backcountry Trail on the Cotton Bayou Trail in Orange Beach ...

backcountry

camping

By John [email protected]

Off the beaten path, but not too far, is the new addition of camping to the Backcountry Trail on the Cotton Bayou Trail in Orange Beach.

“It’s just a cool little walk in the dunes,” Phillip West, coastal resources director for Orange Beach, said. “And this environment to me just looks like the southwestern U.S. You almost feel like you’re somewhere in Arizona, the stubby pines and everything.”

A stroll, or bike ride, would be in order. These three new tents set up in a sandy dunes area near the intersection of Cotton Bayou Trail and Catman Road are accessible only by foot or pedal.

The theme is rustic wood with real timber used to frame the porches and the woodsy feel. Officials are playing on the western theme for the new attraction.

“It’s going to be called the Outpost,” Gulf State Park Su-perintendent Lisa Laraway said. “There are three canopy tents up on a wooden platform. They have four cots that will be in each one of them. You can rent them all together or rent them separately. We decided to name them something western so one’s called the Duke, one the Bonanza and one the Alamo.”

The cots, known as the Big Boy, are made by the same company that makes the tents and each can hold 1,100 pounds. Four chairs are also provided with each tent as well as firewood.

It’s a bit primitive, besides the walk/bike option. There is well water on the site, but it hasn’t been approved for drinking.

“We have well water pumped and there’s a sink in there and it’s just for cleaning stuff,” Laraway said. “We’re going to build a huge picnic table with a pergola over the top of it. The whole concept is to get these rented and have a central meeting place.

“Each one will have their own little fireplace, but then we’re going to create a big middle section where people can come in.”

Modern bathrooms are three tenths of a mile away at the Catman Road and Rosemary Dunes Trail intersection and showers are 1.8 miles away in the campground.

“We’re working on outside toilets for men and women but the water table is causing concern,” Laraway said.

Solar panels will provide for lights, once installed, the hope is the power can be used for charging cellphones and running a fan.

The hope is the $50-per-night tents will bring in some much needed cash for the Backcountry Trail Foundation. And if these are successful other similar sites may be devel-oped including treehouse camping.

“We have such a diversity of eco-systems, we want people to be able to stay inside the ridge and the wilderness area, the sandy area of the dunes and we’re looking at trying to put some on Little Lake but there are some logistical issues,” Laraway said. “The treehouses we’re hoping to maybe put on the ridge to where it would look over the area toward the campground.

“It’s probably a funding issue. We’re looking for fundrais-ers we can do like races and other things. We need more funding for the trail.”

Cool nights and mild days make this the perfect time of year to pitch a tent and enjoy the best of what nature has to offer. There's no better place to camp than on the Alabama Gulf Coast, and we've got some great spots to visit.

Gulf State Park20115 State Highway 135, Gulf Shores251-948-7275At the Gulf State Park campground, enjoy the swimming pool, tennis courts, modern bath-houses, laundry facilities and two playgrounds. In addition, you'll also find a Nature Center and plenty of trails for biking, hiking and new discoveries.

Southport Campground108 Waterway W Blvd, Gulf Shores251-968-6220Southport Campground is located on the Intra-coastal Waterway in Gulf Shores, just minutes from public beaches, din-ing and attractions. The campground offers two clubrooms with kitchen facilities, as well as a coin-operated laundry and restrooms with showers.

Gulf Coast RV Park5584 Co Rd 6, Gulf Shores251-968-6494At Gulf Coast RV Park, you're only five miles from the Gulf of Mexico and 300 yards from the Bon Secour River. The park of-fers campers paved roads, laundry facilities and a recreation room.

Before you go ...• Check the rules of the campground you select.

You'll need to know in advance if parks are pet friendly. In addition, ask what types of cooking facilities are available, such as grills.

• Determine if the campsite can accommodate both a sleeping tent and a screened tent where you can relax and have meals.

• Plan your meals in advance. Nothing smells better on a cool morning than breakfast on a camp stove. Lunch may be light, with sandwiches, chips and cookies, and you may want to plan a dinner and night on the town at least once to give the cook a break.

• Check out your camping gear before you leave to avoid any unpleasant surprises of missing or damaged items.

• Bring along a few inside-the-tent activities such as games, cards or books.

Camping can be a fun bonding experience for a fam-ily. A night spent under the stars and away from the electronics may be just the ticket this season.

Excitement is all around for a great day of fishing with your bud-dies. The boat is full of fuel, new line on your favorite reels, the weather forecast is actually correct with one-foot or less waves and here we go.

Our target fish is cobia, also known as ling or lemon fish. These curious fish travel through our Ala-bama Gulf Coast area starting in the spring, migrating from Florida to Texas, but many hang around all summer.

This gives us yet another great near shore species to target. If one of these monsters is hooked and brought to the boat still a little green, better have a big bat ready. If gaffed, they will literally tear up a boat unless you get its attention rather quickly.

It’s probably best to have a big net handy rather than a bat because they will be calmer and confined on the deck and you can make sure it’s a legal size, which is 33-inches minimum fork length and 2 per person.

There are two excellent IPhone apps that I use to keep up with the ever changing regulations of all the fish lim-its and seasons. One is “Fish Rules”, which automati-cally determines your GPS location. This app applies to state regulations.

The other app is “GFCregs”. This gives all pertinent information for federal waters. I was made aware of the difference when I was checking sheepshead information on the GFC app and it showed there was no limit, which I was quite sure to be incorrect. After a little investigation, I was informed that GFC app was for Federal regulations. Good to know. Ignorance is no excuse if checked by of-ficials.

(Just a note regarding what to keep or not keep: red drum, which we know as bull reds, are not allowed to be kept in federal waters, only state waters. Not knowing the rules could land you in big trouble.)

Our plan was to get live bait, run out to some anchored offshore ships looking for cobia. If you don’t learn any-thing else from this article, you must always have a plan B. Murphy’s Law is also on the water so be prepared for anything.

To catch some live bait, we tied up to a pier, put on Sabiki rigs, tipped with squid or salted shrimp and caught croaker, sweet trout, grunts and pinfish. Then we headed offshore. Don’t forget to stop around some of the channel markers to catch some hardtails which make great bait.

Upon arriving at 5 a.m., foreign ships anchored near the farewell buoy, we started fishing. I like to free line live bait and other guys were fishing deep or just trolling around the ship. Cobia wouldn’t touch artificial jigs, but

when offered a live croaker: game on.

After not catching many, we de-cided to go for plan B. We decided to run to a few offshore rigs since cobia like to hang around structure. Upon arriving, all we could catch was red snapper, which of course was not in season, but made some great photos.

After thoroughly fishing several offshore rigs, we decided to head back to Dixey Bar near Ft. Morgan. The tide would be changing soon which usually made for some good fishing for bull reds, jacks or sharks. At this point, anything to pull the line would be nice.

About 2 p.m., the tide slowly began to change so we gave our re-maining bait to a friend who was just starting to fish and we loaded the boat.

A disappointing trip? Not at all. A beautiful day on the water with friends, arriving back safely and no boat trouble, well maybe a little, we realized how blessed we really are and catching fish is always a bonus.

The point is, have a plan B if plan A doesn’t work. Weather turning bad, target fish not biting or a host of other things can require you to be flexible, so take differ-ent type rods and tackle so you can adapt as needed.

Life is a lot like fishing. Things don’t always go like we plan, but I believe there is a God that has a plan for our lives. Take a little time and find out what it is. Happiness will surely follow.

Remember, take a kid fishing, obey the rules and get home safe. Any day on the water is fun and catching fish is always a bonus.

Born in Detroit, Steve Kazman is both an artist and a musician when it comes to food. His dad who was “old school tough” Detroit cop, loved to cook, and his mom let him.

His mom worked for General Motors for 36 years. They divorced when Steve was 13. Steve would watch his dad cook dinner in the late afternoons, and Steve would help when he could. He loved the close-ness he felt to his dad as they “painted” together, and the appreciation of the rest of the family from the delight of a well pre-pared meal.

Steve played some baseball and basketball in school, and was quite popular and well liked. Steve learned from his parents to respect others, and to have a good work ethic, traits which he practices today.

Steve says he could write a book on “Ten thousand excuses why someone was late for work.” He says since he’s been the boss, he’s heard them all.

Through years of working at Morton’s Steakhous, Ruth Chris and as a consultant, he kept hearing about the beaches of Alabama.

He packed up and came to check them out. He took a bartender job at the Outrigger, and worked three days a week for some pocket change, and to be part of the social structure of the beach. Then came the hurricane, and blew the restaurant away.

He knew Bob Baumhower of The Compleat Angler, Wings, Aloha Hospi-talities, as well as hav-ing met at various so-cial and professional

functions. Bob offered him a job as Director of Culinary. Steve worked at the Beach Club for a while, and while there, met and dated one of the waitresses who is a beau-tiful Korean lady.

Eventually, they married, and now have four beauti-ful children, all boys. Steve, still looking for his groove, rented the kitchen at the American Legion, and cooked and has served meals there for the past six years. He had quite a following and filled the halls at lunch as well as

on Friday nights and holidays.

He also o p e r a t e d his own ca-tering business (still has it) called Four Brothers, but like things are and supporting a family, it was now time for more. Steve wanted his own restaurant where he made the rules and owned his business.

Looking around for a restaurant up for rent, they happened on the building now known as The Diner. The build-ing had been Big Daddy’s last, and before that, a

Polynesian, a Chinese, and a Mexican restaurant. They fell in love with it, and though the building had

a bad track record, Steve saw the potential. It seats 225 patrons, has a large meeting room, and a comfortable bar. Steve’s attitude is to provide locals with good food at a good price. The concept was for the business man and woman to have a good home-cooked meal.

They’re not into selling T-shirts and coffee mugs, but just good food. Their biggest crowd is for lunch. Steve says he wants to be known for providing good food, good service, good price, a clean restaurant with an appealing atmosphere. Steve enjoys coming out into the restaurant, and meeting the customers.

He enjoys the personal touch that gives him, as well as the customer. He stops at each table and thanks them for coming into the restaurant.

The restaurant was ready in December 2014 but be-cause they were operating the restaurant at the Legion, they waited till February 2015 to open so as not to com-pete with the Legion. The Diner does continue the tradi-tion of Steaks on Friday, and Prime Ribs on Tuesday.

He’s building his business “one table at a time.” Steve puts in 16 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Steve is a Chamber member, and now that he’s on the right track, he’s planning on being more active. Every year at Thanksgiving he provides free food for about 400 people. Steve says that’s his way of giving back to the community. At Christmas time they pick their favorite charity (last year was Mary’s Shelter), and bring them Christmas dinners, as well as gifts.

Steve is a credit to the Island, and a really good per-son who’s happy to be On the Island. We’re proud to have him and his family on the Island, and I’m proud to be able to call him my friend.

Capt. Mark asks, ‘Who’s on the Island?’

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

It was a beau ful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and ge ng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot.

We have both been very dissa s ed with the last few a empts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into considera on our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother.

The traffi c was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beau ful.

Pam, my friend, went rst since I was a li le chicken a er the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He rst looked at her face shape and explained that there are ve face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, a er that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condi on her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right.

So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condi oning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of mo on, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was nished! She was so happy and she could not believe the diff erence in her hair.

Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made diff erent to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condi oners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condi on our hair the same.

Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. A er we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condi oning my hair had ever had.

While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. A er shampooing and before condi oning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pu ng any condi oner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it rst then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave

the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more.

A er she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line

of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Pirate's Cove hosts High Hopes 4 AutismBy Destiny [email protected]

The Annual High Hopes 4 Autism FUNraiser brings plenty of community support and donations to the founda-tion every year. With raffles, silent auctions and donations from more than 200 local businesses, the event is growing larger as it reaches its ninth year.

Founded in 2009, High Hopes 4 Autism specializes in applied behavior analysis (ABA) concentrating on lan-guage development and social behavior. Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention, often referred to as ABA therapy is scientifically proven to be the most effective intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders and other Developmental Delays.

“We accept children up to 4 years old and will work

with them until they are ready to be independent learners,” said Rachael Mueller, founder of High Hopes.

This is the ninth year the fundraising-event has been at Pirate's Cove.

“We began raising money for a place similar to this and then we got enough endurance and support and education that we opened one locally, which was always the goal,” Mueller said.

Each year, the event has a draw down for a Jeep. Tickets are $10 and have been sold out before the event in the past two years. The tickets for the draw down also include admission to the event and can be purchased at Pirate's Cove, online and from local volunteers.

“This year we're raffling off a 160 Yeti cooler and we have a silent auction with more than 200 local businesses donating. It's very huge,” Mueller said.

All proceeds from the FUNraiser will go to High Hopes located in Elberta.

“I think it's a special event to have because we highlight what autism is, it's a community project,” Mueller said. “Everything that is raised stays local. It's local people raising local funds with a local program. There isn’t really anything like it in the area.”

Shindig on the Sand gives back to Gulf Coast musiciansBy Destiny [email protected]

Shindig on the Sand celebrates its third year at the fa-mous Flora-Bama on the line. Three days of music on the beach with more than 150 local musicians at “America's Last Roadhouse,” draws thousands of music lovers in each year.

The idea of Shindig in the Sand began with the Flora-Bama's desire to help out the Gulf Coast musicians, who were such a staple to the Flora-Bama family and the Gulf Coast music scene. The Flora-Bama partnered with American Family Care to establish the Gulf Coast Musi-cian Assistance Fund.

“The fund is to help our beloved Gulf Coast musicians get health care,” said Jenifer Surface-Ivey, marketing di-rector for the Flora-Bama. “Each year, we've put at least $5,000 into it so if a Gulf Coast musician needs to go get a check-up or if they're sick and need to get treated, they need to go to an American Family Care.”

There are 14 American Family Care clinics around the Gulf Coast.

“Flora-Bama will pay for half of that visit and American

Family Care will cover the rest and the musician only has to pay the $25 co-pay.”

This year, the Flora-Bama plans to take it back a notch from last year's event by keeping it local and holding back from the big name headliners.

“This year, we're bringing it back to only our Gulf Coast musicians,” Surface-Ivey said.

There are a few thousand attendees expected at the event for each day. All three stages inside the Flora-Bama, the Flora-Bama Yacht Club Stage and the beach stage will have music all day beginning at 2 p.m.

“They're will be a few thousand each day that come listen to music and have a good time

and hopefully help raise the money for our fund,” Surface-Ivey said.

“We hope to keep this event at Flora-Bama for many years to come.”

In-house boat concert returns to Robinson Island

Rockin’ on the waterAt high noon, the largest floating concert of the year will

kick-off on Bird Island. Gumbo Key invites all music lov-ers and boat enthusiasts to come out for an afternoon of live music on the blue waters of Perdido Pass. The floating musical venue will host musical talents throughout the afternoon.

This year, there will be per-formances by Wes Loper Band, Roddie Romero and The Hub City All-Stars.

Music enthusiast, Mac McAleer, brings a day of sun, fun and live entertainment to the Island. Whether you’re on Ala-bama’s beaches for vacation, sporting event or even a beach convention, Gumbo Key is a unique, can’t-miss event.

The inaugural concert in 2014 brought in 400 boats and more than 1,000 people to enjoy the sounds of live Southern music. Local acts including the Wes Loper Band, Kyle and Karl, Ryan Balthorp, Jon Cook and Lee Yankie entertained concertgoers from tropically decorated barges. Local bands will again headline the 2015 event.

Those attending in 2014 listened from in the water and aboard their boats. Gumbo Key was marked with a ring

of Noodle floats and a 16-foot flag.McAleer declared himself mayor of Gumbo Key for the

day. The event scored high marks for not leaving behind any trash that might hurt the fragile

ecosystem of the area. How do you attend? Find a boat! Ride with a friend or split the cost

of renting a boat with a group.According to concert orga-

nizers and attendees, Gumbo Key isn’t so much a place as it is a state of mind. Be on the

lookout for more updates as the concert nears.

Gumbo Key etiquette:Keep your trash out of the splash (and off the islands).

Please don’t leave footprints in the interior sand dunes and areas enclosed by fencing. Those are impor-tant nesting spots for blue herons and others, and we don’t want to disturb them.

Please obey no-motor and no-wake zones and idle or raise your motor when navigating shallow waters. Take special care in seagrass beds, which serve as habitats for many beloved creatures, such as shrimp, crabs, fish, birds, manatees, and sea turtles. Please avoid damaging these habitats!

Have a good time, boat responsibly, respect each other and respect our islands.

During the months of May to October, we share our Alabama beaches with visitors of a different sort: the nesting sea turtle.

In 2014, nearly 7,000 of our underwater friends were hatched along the shores from Dauphin Island and Fort Morgan to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. During these perilous few months for sea turtles and their nests, the Share the Beach program urges residents and visitors alike to help Mother Nature by being aware of our nest-ing neighbors.

There are three types of sea turtles that make the Alabama Gulf Coast a nursery for their eggs: loggerhead, Kemps ridley and green. Loggerheads are the most com-mon found on Alabama’s shoreline.

Kemps ridley turtles are rare on Alabama’s beaches and you’ll only find a couple nesting on the Alabama

Gulf Coast each year. While loggerheads nest and hatch at night, Kemps ridleys are daytime nesters. It’s even rarer to find a green sea turtle nesting on Alabama’s coastline. In 2014, a green sea turtle attempted to nest, but was de-terred by beach chairs and umbrellas. Kemps ridleys are listed as endangered, while the loggerheads and greens are a cause for concern due to over-harvesting, as well as being caught in fishing and shrimping nets, loss of suit-able nesting habitat, ingestion of marine debris and boat strikes. All three species are protected under the Federal Endangered Species Act.

Sea turtles nest in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach from May to October. Female turtles return to lay their eggs near the same beach where they hatched. Incubation periods for turtle eggs range from 48 to 75 days, depending on the temperature of the beach. Cooler weather means a longer incubation period. Temperature also determines the gen-der of the hatchlings, with warmer temperatures produc-

38 Beachin’ June 2015 GulfVisitorGuide.com

ing females and cooler tempera-tures producing males.

T h e r e c a n also be tempera-ture differences in the nest it-self. Hatchlings emerge from the nests and make a frenzied race toward the Gulf of Mexico.

S h a r e t h e Beach volun-teers are trained to locate turtle crawls indicating where nests are located. When a nest is found, volunteers stake and mark the area so it will remain undisturbed. Some volunteers return as nest sitters while others mitigate artificial light pollution by digging trenches between the nest and water or build-ing silt fences.

One goal of Share the Beach volunteers is to get the hatchlings out to the relative safety of open water. In addition, Share the Beach also promotes awareness and conservation of sea turtles through public education and outreach.

5 easy ways allow you to be sea turtle-friendly and help ensure the longevity of our underwater friends.

1 Do not disturb sea turtle nests marked on the beach. It is a Federal offense to disturb either nests or sea turtles.

2 Minimize outdoor lighting as much as possible and don’t use flash cameras on the beach during nesting season. Turn off balcony lights and close curtains and blinds to keep light from shining on the beach. When walking the beach or sand crabbing at night, use red flashlights or red flashlight covers.

3 Don’t leave your beach gear – such as umbrellas, tents, chairs and coolers – on the beach at night. These items can discourage or injure a sea turtle from nesting. In addition, clear your trash when you leave the beach. Your trash could cause the death of a sea turtle if she ingests the garbage. You should also fill in any holes that were dug. Holes can injure both turtles and people.

4 If you see a sea turtle on the beach at night, leave it alone. No photos, please. Female sea turtles may not nest if dis-turbed. And, remember, it’s a federal offense to disturb these nesting neighbors.

5 Adopt a nest. Funds raised through the Adopt a Nest program are used to purchase new equipment, as well as provide education to the public.

If you spot a sea turtle during your beach time and you don’t see Share the Beach volunteers nearby in green T-shirts, notify the Share the Beach program at 866-Sea-Turtle.
