Hello there.

Spring and sunshine are finally here, and it’s a great time to be at the beach. Some of the events the Island is famous for are finally getting closer on the cal-endar. The Mullet Toss at Flora-Bama draws in thousands each year to the Gulf Coast, and the concert series at the Wharf kicks off with Jimmy Buffet and a crowd full of parrotheads. If you’re on a mission to get fit, there are plenty of local marathons that invite all run-ners to come participate, but if you’re wanting to relax just grab a beach chair and head down to any of the beautiful beaches along the coast. There are many new establish-ments opening at the beach such as the The Hot Spot at The Wharf, and with all of the local music and grub, it’s hard to find time to get bored on this Island.

DIVING the lulu

by patricia WuestScubaDiving.com

Divemasters John Rice and Cheynne Milan are as excited as two Alabama football fans who have just been told that the Crimson Tide has rolled to its 16th national championship.

“I was on the first trip we took cus-tomers to the LuLu,” Rice says. “I had opening-day jitters. I probably have about 80 dives on her, and there’s always something surprising to see. I can’t wait to dive it today.”

“I got to see it right after the day it was put down,” Milan chimes in. “We get to see it grow.”

Despite the gray skies, their enthu-siasm is contagious. We’re aboard the 46-foot Down Under and have just pulled out from SanRoc Cay Marina in Orange Beach, Alabama. Down Under also puts divers on the Oris-kany of Pensacola, Florida. Rice loves that wreck, too, “but I love the LuLu’s

shallow depth and the shorter trip to get to it,” he says of our 90-minute ride. “She’s just a great all-around dive.”

With the 888-foot Mighty O in 200 feet of water — the flight deck is at 145 — Alabama dive operators wanted to sink a ship that was less daunting to open-water divers. They got what they hoped for in LuLu, a 271-foot, steel-hulled former coastal freighter originally named Yokamu. Purpose-sunk on May 26, 2013, LuLu sits upright on a 115-foot sand bot-tom; its picturesque wheelhouse tops out at a rec-diver-friendly 60 feet.

“Orange Beach is my home, and I’m proud when I hear divers talk about their experience on LuLu,” says Vince Lucido, president of the Alabama Gulf Coast Reef and Restora-tion Foundation. The foundation, the state of Alabama, the cities of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, Baldwin County Commissioners and private

investor Mac McAleer were instru-mental in raising and donating the $500,000 necessary for successfully sinking the ship 17 nautical miles off Perdido Pass.

A sprinkly rain has started, but the seas are calm on the October morn-ing we make our dives. On the ride out, as divers and crew settle into conversations, I ask Rice about the dive profile. “We’ll tie up to the bow,” he says. “On your first dive, you can start inside the cargo hold, but on your second, you’ll want to head to the wheelhouse where there are lots of levels to explore.”

Chandra Wright, a former attor-ney who is now the nature tourism specialist at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism, is making the dive with us. “Having played a part in sinking the LuLu, she’ll always have a special place in my heart,” Wright tells me. “I walked that ship from bow to stern while she was topside, and

6 Beachin’ April 2015 GulfVisitorGuide.com

Page 7: Beachin' (April 2015)

now I have the privilege of seeing her grow as a dive site with new marine life on each trip. She’s getting tons of snapper of all sorts.”

Wright is not just whistling Dixie. After tying up, we drop down and find the wreck smothered in schools of fish. On our way to the wheel-house, we pop into the cargo hold, which is in about 90 feet of water, and measures 200 feet long and 28 feet deep. We watch a moon jellyfish get-ting gobbled up by a bunch of young snapper; once the feasting is done, we make our way to the wheelhouse. Each time we glide over the top of the wheelhouse, it’s like finning though a mini baitball. Fish part like a beaded curtain, and then regroup behind us. Snappers galore swirl around us. A sizable number of juvenile tropi-cals like fairy basslets are hugging the superstructure. You can easily explore both the superstructure and the bow on a single dive, but we’ve spent enough time deeper on the cargo-hold deck that we’re pushing our dive profile. Reluctantly, we leave the fish fest.

We stick to Rice’s recommendation and spend the second dive circum-navigating the wheelhouse, which is a delightful mix of structure and fish aquarium. In addition to all the schooling fish, the top deck hosts a village of arrow crabs. I miss the oc-topus that several divers watch disap-pear into its lair. The wheelhouse has many levels and places to explore, inside and out, so even with a full boat, you can avoid bunching up. It’s a great place to practice your wide-angle underwater photography; make sure your dive buddy poses next to the Alabama-shaped dive flag painted on the back of the wheelhouse. The art is not as bright as it was when LuLu was first put down, but it’s still discernible.

beyond luluAlabama is home to one of the

largest artificial-reef programs in the world, with more than 17,000 reefs covering 1,200 square miles. There are hundreds of barges, army tanks from the Vietnam War era, oil rigs and limestone reef pyramids off its coast.

Typical among the sites visited by Orange Beach dive-charter compa-nies is 3 Mile Barge, named for its location three miles south of Perdido Pass. This inshore artificial reef lies in just 37 feet of water. Although it lacks the drama of LuLu, the barge provides structure for small sea fans. “If you’ve got keen eyesight, you might see a flamingo tongue hiding in the branches,” Chandra Wright says.

“There’s an abundance of fish species, from juveniles to adults, so be prepared to spend your surface interval debating your buddy on fish ID.” Indeed, the variety of fish in Alabama waters rivals the Caribbean — amberjack, Atlantic spadefish, queen angelfish, spotted drum, gag grouper and red snapper were among the fish we saw.

With 32 miles of gorgeous stretches of white sand and clear waters, and a delightfully fun wreck to explore, Orange Beach and Gulf Shores are poised to become hot spots for Southeast divers. And LuLu is just the beginning: The state plans to establish more nearshore snorkeling opportunities and will sink another ship by 2016. “Though no agreements have been made yet, we’re looking at another vessel now,” says Lucido.

Now that we’re ’Bama wreck-diving fans, we can’t wait for it to become reality — and help celebrate its sinking.

A dIVInG ITInerArYday 1: Rent tanks from Down under Dive Shop and make a shore dive on the Perdido Pass Jetties at Alabama Point. After the dive, check in at the Fairfield inn & Suites Orange Beach (starting at $99 per night, depending on season). Book a 90-minute sunset dolphin cruise with Cetacean Cruises for $15 per person. Then eat dinner at Nolan’s Restaurant & Lounge on Gulf Shores Parkway in Gulf Shores.

day 2: After making a two-tank morning dive on LuLu, plan lunch at the laid-back marina bar and grill Tacky Jack’s. You can’t go wrong when you can get shrimp every way (peel-’em-yourself, firecracker, pickled and in a salad). Just before sunset, dive the Whiskey Wreck, approximately 150 yards from the public beach. Make late-evening dinner reservations at Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina. This is casual, open-air dining with a view of the water or gardens, and the fish tacos rock.

day 3: Eat brunch at the Brick & Spoon restaurant on Canal Road in Orange Beach for inventive Cajun- and Creole-inspired dishes. Then make a relaxing afternoon dive on 3 Mile Barge, or schedule a zip-lining, paddle-boarding or kayaking excursion with Gulf Adventure Center at Gulf State Park.

FLORA-BAMA TO HOST THE “Greatest Beach Party on the Gulf Coast”

by destiny brown [email protected]

Held during the last full weekend in April, the Interstate Mullet Toss at The Flora-Bama has grown to be one of the most renowned events hosted by “America’s last road-house.”

This year marks the 31st year the Flora-Bama, has hosted the event and the Flora-Bama shows us that the mullet is not just a bad haircut.

During the course of the weekend (Thursday through Sunday), 30,000 will people pass through the doors of the Flora-Bama.

The actual mullet toss involves tossing one of the fish from a 10-foot circle in Florida across the state line into Alabama. This year’s event will feature local celebrities tossing out a few fish at noon, each day (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).

“It costs $15 to throw a mullet,” Jenifer Surface-Ivey, marketing director for the Flora-Bama said. “But you get a T-shirt and over the course of the weekend we give over $20,000 to local charities.”

The cost of each fish flung will go to local youth charities, including local school education and prevention program from the Community Drug & Alcohol Council, Inc. (CDAC) which offers programs, community support and collabora-tion to address drug and alcohol abuse, tobacco, mental health issues and violence both in the home and on our streets.

Not everyone has to toss a mullet at the event. The weekend-long beach party will include plenty of activities, great music and awesome food from the Bama.

“I always suggest you watch the toss,” Surface-Ivey said. “It’s always very entertaining. We always have live music inside on all of the stages. There is also a bikini contest and a hot body contest that the guys can enter.”

The venue will also have drink specials and food specials.

“Mostly it’s just beautiful weather so come out and hang out on the beach and it’ll be perfect,” Sur-face-Ivey said. “Come expe-rience it. It’s a bucket list event.”

If you bought a 2015 membership card, it’s good for free admission to the Mullet Toss.

Local duo releases new albumSugarcane Jane

18 Beachin’ April 2015 GulfVisitorGuide.com

Page 19: Beachin' (April 2015)

Sugarcane Jane, the Alabama Gulf Coast-based duo, will release their new studio album, Dirt Road's End — an album they conceived and co-produced

with legendary Americana/Roots singer-songwriter Buzz Cason.

The album will be released via Cason’s Arena Record-ings / eOne Entertainment on April 28.

Sugarcane Jane has amassed an extremely loyal fol-lowing. Anthony and Savana Lee Crawford purvey what they proudly call “Organic Music at its Finest.” Rich, homegrown and natural, their brand of Americana draws from a deep well of roots influences, interwoven with inflections of gospel, country, jazz and rock.

Both virtuosos in their own right, Anthony is a song-writer who plays acoustic guitar, mandolin and a bass drum or stomp box (which he plays while strumming his six-string) and Savana Lee deftly dances between rhythm guitar, tambourine and snare drum.

Multi-instrumentalist Anthony Crawford is known in most circles as a sideman to the stars. During the course of the past 25 years, he has performed with Neil Young, Sonny James, Steve Winwood, Dwight Yoakam, Vince Gill, Rosanne Cash and Rodney Cromwell, and has written or co-written songs recorded by Kenny Rogers, Steve Win-wood, Pegi Young, Lee Greenwood and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, to name a few.

Yet, even with his history of working with heavy-weights, Crawford feels Sugarcane Jane — his musical venture with multi-instrumentalist wife Savana Lee Crawford, is his life’s calling.

Recorded on analog two-inch tape on the classic Otari MTR-90 tape machine at Buzz Cason's Creative Workshop in Nashville, this fast-paced, high-energy album traverses a range of moods and stories.

“Home Nights,” co-written with Cason in a small toolshed while the two were working on solo songs for Anthony, is sweet, simple and sumptuous with a South-ern groove.

Autobiographical opener “The Ballad Of Sugarcane Jane” traces the couple’s journey from their time in Nash-ville, where they met working together in a studio, to their subsequent romance and marriage. Their story is woven into the fabric of this rocking cut, featuring Anthony’s driving guitar work.

“Heartbreak Road” is a fan favorite steaming with Bluegrass spirit and rock ‘n’ roll energy. On the New Orleans-inspired “Louisiana,” Sugarcane Jane break out their ability to “scat” with the best of jazz singers.

The Cason-penned “Not Just Another Truck Song” is a tongue-in-cheek number showcasing the band’s humorous side. The album closes with the inspiring gospel-tinged “Glory Bound” (co-written by Anthony and Cason), which was previously recorded by the Oak Ridge Boys.

“The release of this album is kind of like watching your baby grow up and move out of the house,” Savana says. “These songs are such a part of us and are the very essence of Sugarcane Jane. We are so excited to see them reach a broader audience.”

If you haven’t gotten to know Sugarcane Jane yet, Dirt Road's End is a great way to make their acquaintance.

Weather is always a determining factor whether or not you can fish. So what do you do on those not-so-good weather days?

There are several options such as boat or trailer mainte-nance, getting tackle ready, watching fishing videos or a host of other time-killing activities. A better option is to drag out the kayak.

There are many advantages to fishing out of a kayak. Stealth for instance. Slipping up on any targeted prey, whether hunting or fishing, is vital for success. Try easing up on a school of feeding specks with your 200 HP engine on a 22-foot boat in three-foot deep water. Then drop an anchor with a 20-foot chain or slip in totally undetected, cast your favorite bait and start putting fish in the boat before they even know you are there. That’s kayak fishing.

Who needs a boat ramp? The beach, a grassy bank or a friend’s backyard on the water is sufficient. A kayak enables you to fish places you would never dream of getting your boat. This opens up another world.

What about operating cost? How about zero vs. three mpg at $4 a gallon, yearly maintenance costing between $700-$1,000 or more, replacing tires, keeping lights working, insurance and on and on. And best of all, your spouse loves it when you save money, yet you still get to fish.

There are a variety of styles and brands of kayaks to choose from, too many to mention in a short article. Go to your local kayak dealer to shop, research the topic on You-tube, or find a friend and pick his brain.

Do I want a paddle kind or a pedal kind? Your preference. Both will work. I personally have a 12-foot Hobie Outback which uses a Mirage drive (foot pedal for propulsion) instead of paddles. This allows hands free fishing except for occasionally putting your hand on the handle to move the rudder. I also use a dolly made to fit the Hobie to pull it to the launch site from my trailer.

When choosing a kayak, the paddle type will be far less expensive if that is an issue. You can spend $200 up to sev-eral thousand, depending of what you want.

YouTube is an excellent way to learn how to rig your boat for fishing. Most anything on your big boat can be adapted to your kayak except in a smaller version. Rod holders are important and brackets can easily be installed if they are not already supplied.

An anchor system is also handy. Some have a pulley system on the side allowing the anchor to be put out in the front or rear of the boat which will position the kayak better in windy conditions. An anchor option is a simple alumi-num rod about 6-foot long pushed thru a scupper hole in the kayak floor. This serves as a poor man’s power pole.

Another excellent feature is a fish/depth finder. Once again, Youtube will give you a variety of ideas. I have a color unit mounted on a swivel located arm’s reach from my rud-der handle. I used marine goop to glue the transducer to the floor and put the small battery in a waterproof plastic utility field box.

I attached a cigarette lighter type plug to the box with the other end on the power cord which makes the battery por-

table for charging it in the house. Keep the weight of your kayak in mind when rigging along with how you will transport the boat. My Outback weighs about 70 lbs. empty vs. a Hobie ProAn-gler 14-foot weighing about 130 pounds, a little heavy to put on your car by yourself.

Some kayaks are set up for fishing, providing holes for rods and tackle storage. I shopped the Internet for a more comfortable seat and liked the 2bmotion.com site. The seat was adjustable and provided lots of tackle storage.

Any bait you choose depending on your targeted fish can be used in the kayak, just like your big boat. My favorite bait and with the most success has been using two rods, trolling a MirroLure. They come in a variety of sizes, colors, sinking or floating.

So far, we have caught bull reds, specks, catfish, bream, large mouth bass, skipjacks and Spanish mackerel. You won’t believe the excitement when you hook a 30-inch bull red on light tackle and get pulled around the lake.

Pick an ice chest that will fit behind your seat. Remember, secure everything so that when you accidentally turn over, they won’t get lost. With that being said, always wear your lifejacket.

Now that I have purchased my kayak and have it all rigged out to fish, how do I get it to the water and where do I go? First let’s look at transporting options.

Choose from car racks (weight being an issue), bed of a pickup truck (may need an extension mounted to your trailer hitch), or a trailer. I chose the trailer.

Harbor Freight has a “trailer in a box” that you can as-semble yourself. It comes complete with tires. Spare tire not included. I added treated two-by-fours mounted from side to side thus allowing me to carry two kayaks at a time on a four-by-eight trailer. Strap the kayak down with tie-down straps. I’ve pulled mine from Alabama to Mississippi with no trouble at all.

Baldwin County has provided several launch sites for kayaks and canoes. Graham Creek has a really nice one. Another is off County Road 20 toward Elberta. Little Lagoon offers a launch site off Fort Morgan Road (Highway 180) in Gulf Shores.

Other good areas are Fish River, Magnolia River, Noltie Creek, Fort Morgan, Dixie Bar (be careful if you have an out-going tide ... may wind up in Cancun). Shelby Lake in Gulf State Park has been really good. The Internet shows maps of kayak/canoe trails all over Alabama. It’s a great sport with little effort or expense to keep you busy on rainy, windy, cold day.

Remember, take a kid fishing, obey the rules and get home safe. Any day on the water is fun and catching fish is always a bonus.

Albert Einstein once said, “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who no longer pauses to wonder, and stand in rapt awe, is as good as dead.”

Lisa Laraway came to us from New Or-leans filled with anticipation, excitement and dreams. It was in New Orleans, “Land of Dreams,” where she attended Catholic schools for 16 years. She has four brothers and three stepsisters and most of her fam-ily still lives in New Orleans.

While at Dominican High School, she got a job working with Hilton Hotel in food and beverage on weekends and nights af-ter school. After high school, she attended LSU but continued to work with Hilton hotels. After completing her first year, she decided to take a year off to go live in New York City to just experience life, and to see “what was out there.”

She returned to Baton Rouge at the end of the year and went back to LSU. Not looking for a handout, she also re-turned to work part time at the Hilton. Part time meant 40 hours a week in order to pay for her college, transportation, apartment and any and all of her other needs.

After a couple years of school, she was still not sure what field of study she would pursue. Hilton offered her a position with them in Washington, D.C., two blocks from the White House, and she jumped at it. She stayed in Washington for six years and moved from the area of food and beverage to front office operations then sales, catering and convention services.

She was in charge of special events for President Reagan, who was in office at the time. She had a security clearance which allowed her to be responsible for various functions for heads of state that were given at the White House.

After six years in Washington, she returned to Louisiana and completed her undergraduate degree at Loyola Universi-ty. Restarting school, she decided to follow a longtime dream of becoming a large animal medicine vet and she graduated with a degree in pre-veterinary medicine/biochemistry.

While in school, she worked as a vet tech, and volun-teered at Audubon Zoo where she learned to work as a sea lion trainer.

While in school, she met a gentleman and they were mar-ried. Lisa had just gotten her undergrad degree and was try-ing to decide if she wanted to continue to vet school or work at the zoo when her husband at the time was transferred to Atlanta. They settled on Lake Lanier Island. Unfortunately, the Atlanta zoo was a two-hour commute, so she went back to work at Lake Lanier Island Resort.

Finally, she was able to transfer back to New Orleans when a position as a trainer opened up at the zoo. She did shows for the public with birds of prey and also worked with more than 300 children training them to be Junior Keepers.

Her job ended the day Hurricane Katrina hit the zoo, and the entire city shut down. Only essential positions at the zoo were kept. As we all know, the hurricane brought massive

destruction to the area, in-cluding her home which was destroyed.

As the hurricane passed and the enormity of the devastation set in, back in New Orleans she and a few friends formed a nonprofit organization called The Beacon of Hope. They started cleaning up where needed, and took charge of working volunteers.

New Orleans City Park had an enor-mous amount of damage and city officials were looking for someone to help with their mess. They had heard about the work Lisa was doing and offered her a job as a project manager to assist with the recov-ery of City Park, which had $43 million in damage.

During a period of four years she worked with 30,000 vol-unteers, and raised more than $1 million in donations for the volunteer projects. She was promoted after the second year to director, and one of her responsibilities was the com-plete renovation and rebuilding of the old Carousel Gardens Amusement Park from the ground up.

While at City Park the stress of life the last several years caused her and her husband to part ways. She is now en-gaged and very happy with her fiancé who is a strength and conditioning coach working with football and various other sports. Looking for a change of venue, a position opened up as the southwest district superintendent for Alabama State Parks, which included Gulf State Park. Lisa applied, and was hired in April 2012.

Her fiancé’, who is originally from Alabama, also had a chance to move this way, and did. The position also required that the superintendent manage park law enforcement. Lisa went to the Police Academy as part of her training and is now a state law enforcement officer for the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources where all park rangers are law enforcement officials.

At Gulf State Park, their rangers also work as facility man-agers including the pier, campground, pavilion, picnic area and trails. There are five other parks in Lisa’s (southwest) dis-trict which include Meaher, Frank Jackson, Florala, Bladon Springs and Chickasaw.

One of her favorite people is Patti Hall, curator of the zoo whom, like herself, doesn’t know the term, “it can’t be done.” Lisa was appointed to the board of directors and is very ex-cited for the opportunity. She truly admires the previous di-rector, Hugh Branyon, and says he’s an icon. She says she has big shoes to fill, and believes she can do it.

She’s been nominated to be in the Sirens Mardi Gras group and she’s planning some big events in the park for this new year. On her email she quotes, “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning how to dance in the rain.”

How fortunate Gulf Shores is to have her on the Island, and how lucky am I to be able to call Lisa my friend.

Capt. Mark asks, ‘Who’s on the Island?’

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

It was a beau ful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and ge ng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot.

We have both been very dissa sfi ed with the last few a empts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into considera on our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother.

The traffi c was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beau ful.

Pam, my friend, went fi rst since I was a li le chicken a er the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He fi rst looked at her face shape and explained that there are fi ve face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, a er that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condi on her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right.

So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condi oning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of mo on, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was fi nished! She was so happy and she could not believe the diff erence in her hair.

Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made diff erent to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condi oners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condi on our hair the same.

Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. A er we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condi oning my hair had ever had.

While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. A er shampooing and before condi oning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pu ng any condi oner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it fi rst then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave

the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more.

A er she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line

of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bo le. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are defi nitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!Anthony’s salon is at 23175 Perdido Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach & their phone

number is 251.974.1514.

One wouldn’t guess that some of the most talented singers and songwriters on the Gulf Coast are being summoned to a house on the bay to record a live podcast. But each week, a new musician is sitting in front of the mic, surrounded by studio equipment and recording from Live at Dave’s.

The idea began with the admiration of local talent.

“After listening to a number of podcasts, Ben Jerkins, a member of our crew, thought it would be fun to record the great variety of musical talent on the Gulf Coast,” Johnny Mullen, crew member for Live at Dave’s said. “As the idea started to take shape, we decided on a weekly format and we’ve been at it since.”

Most of the crew members are musicians themselves. The name “Live at Dave’s” began with many nights of open jams at Dave McDonald’s house.

“Many of the crew are musicians and would play together in Dave and

Cindy’s living room,” Mullen said. “Dave would record us with

his phone and call it ‘Live at Dave’s.’ The name carried over to this project.”

Each week, a different lo-cal artist takes the “stage” at Live at Dave’s. The podcasts

are released on Mondays via soundcloud.com and showcase

musicians from around the Gulf

Coast. The artists are asked to per-

form three to five songs with interviews between songs.

“The first few artists were chosen because they were close friends of the Live at Dave’s family,” Mullen said. “Recently, artists have been asking to perform which has made the process much easier.”

The crew consists of Henry Bateman, Dave and Cindy McDonald, Ben Jerkins, Beth Childs, Jackie “Ho” Cole, Johnny Mullen and Hundred Dollar Car (the house band).

“Mobilizing is the next big step we have planned,” Mul-len said. “To make that happen we need to upgrade our equipment. Sponsorships could really help fast-forward our efforts to record from anywhere.”

From combined reports

John Fogerty’s highly anticipated worldwide “1969” tour is pleased to announce additional U.S. dates.

The tour begins in Memphis on May 2, but will make a stop in Orange Beach at The Amphitheater at The Wharf on Friday, May 8. Tickets are on sale now and range from $31 to $75.50.

The tour will continue to the East Coast with stops in North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina be-fore heading south to Florida with shows in St. Augustine, Tampa and West Palm Beach.

Fogerty’s “1969” continues throughout May, June and July with a previously announced show at the iconic Hollywood Bowl, scheduled for July 15.

Additional summer dates will be announced shortly, with the U.S. portion of the “1969” tour set to conclude in August.

Fogerty adds to a stellar spring-summer lineup at The Wharf that includes classic 1970s rockers Boston and Kansas. The groups will play a Friday night show on May 1 will cost between $32 and $92.

The blockbuster Jimmy Buffett show is set for April 24 and on Feb. 27 tickets to his show with the Coral Reefer Band sold out in 90 minutes. Tickets were $145.25, $124.50, $104.10 and $62.95.

Tickets for Eric Church’s June 12 “The Outsiders World Tour” range from $73.75 to $43.75, plus service charges. The opening act hasn’t been announced yet.

Earlier this year it was announced that the Beach Boys and America will play a show at the Amphitheater as well. The beach music icons are coming to The Wharf Amphitheater on Memorial Day weekend and 1970s hit-making duo America will open the show.

That show will be on Saturday, May 23 of the holiday weekend. Tickets are $68 or $28.

Shows already announced for The Wharf this year are pop country duo Florida-Georgia Line on Saturday, March 23, and rocking Dave Matthews Band on Tuesday, June 2.

Florida-Georgia Line tickets are already on sale and prices are $72 or $41, including convenience fees. The duo also played The Wharf in March of 2014 opening three consecutive nights for Jason Aldean on March 13, 14 and 15.

Dave Matthews tickets are now on sale and cost $95 or $84. Matthews last played in Orange Beach at The Wharf in July 2013 and has also played at the Hangout Music Fest in Gulf Shores in 2012.

The “1969” world tour began in November with a cross-country trek of Canada. Seventeen shows in all, many of which sold out, and the crowds were screaming for more.

Fogerty’s “1969” tour was named one of the Top 20 Global Concert Tours of 2014 by Pollstar. Praise for Fo-gerty’s delivery, as well as for his exceptionally talented band, came from the Hamilton Spectator, stating: “… this band that Fogerty is fronting now is probably better than that little four-piece garage band known as Creedence Clearwater Revival.”

Fogerty’s music, his lyrics and his voice resounded through an amazing and never duplicated release of three separate albums with Creedence Clearwater Revival (Bayou Country, Green River, and Willy and the Poor Boys). In that year — 1969 — Fogerty gave the nation, even the world, an emotional and intellectual marker forever burned within our collective psyche. Now, in his 69th year, Fogerty is calling us back, to reinvigorate those ties that bind us, with his upcoming “1969” world tour.

Fogerty has also been hard at work on his first autobi-ography, which is now set for release this fall.

Patrons of live music and great food are invited to come in and welcome one of Orange Beach’s newest venues, The Hot Spot.

Located at The Wharf in the old Ginny Lane’s building, the Hot Spot brings a different kind of at-titude to the entertainment district.

Island Times Daiquiri Bar owner, Bobby Graves thought of opening the new establishment when he overheard his customers at Daiquiri Bar discuss what they wanted in a restaurant/bar.

“We sat there and always listened to how we didn’t have food at the Daiquiri Bar, and you always hear people saying what they want in a bar and what they want in food,” Graves said. “So finally, I opened my mouth and decided to have food that no one else is doing.”

Built to host live music and large crowds, The Hot Spot also offers an extensive menu that’s a little dif-ferent than what the area is used to. The menu offers plenty of variety, but there are many menu items that have a Cajun flare.

“I wanted things from back home in Louisiana,” Graves said. “Like the roast beef poboy and the

shrimp dishes and the thincut catfish.”All of these items are offered on the menu as well as

burgers, a variety of wings with different sauces and entrees like shrimp ‘n grits. Appetizers range from Conecuh sausage bites to pretzels to BBQ shrimp to shrimp wontons and much more.

The restaurant also makes its own sauces from honey mustard to Parmesan garlic butter pretzel dip to Wild Bill’s wing sauce and more. The restaurant also offers a breakfast menu all day until close.

“The food is great and everything we have is the best,” Graves said. “We’ve turned into a fun place. With the records on the wall, the guitars, the beer wa-terfall, TV’s playing music videos everywhere. We’re an entertainment place with great food.”

As for live music, Graves plans on bringing all acts to the venue. From regional acts to local artists, de-pending on the night.

Currently, The Hot Spot plans to have live bands Thursday thorough Saturday, but plans on expanding to seven days a week. The Hot Spot also plans to host the second annual Gulf Coast Songwriter Shootout later this year.

“Right now we’re taking our training wheels off and learning what things we need to do,” Graves said. “We don’t want to get that reputation of waiting too long for food or our food not being good. Where the future goes depends on how everything goes right now, we’ll let the customer dictate it to us.”
