Three days of peace, love and music

More than six stages will be set up along the Gulf Shores public beach for the 2015 Hangout Music Festival. If you’re into music, the beach and a good time, be sure to get your ticket early so you don’t miss out on the fun in the sun.

The sixth annual Hangout Music Festival comes on the heels of an announcement that it will be around for another ten years. National festival

music heavyweight Goldenvoice will be on board to help run the shows.

“From the beginning, the Hangout Music Festival's main priority has been to create an incredible fan ex-perience,” Hangout founder Shaul Zislin said. “With our recently announced partnership with Goldenvoice, who produces top festivals including Coachella, we have found a partner that shares our vision in both fan experience and music programming. This partnership offers an exciting opportunity for the overall enhance-ment of Hangout.”

Hangout Music Festival is the first and only festival of its kind. The festival’s extraordinary beach backdrop and sandy walkways make Hangout Music Festival the premiere destination for music fans.

This year the festival will be May 15 through 17 and will feature headliners Foo Fighters, Zac Brown Band, Beck, My Morning Jacket, Skrillex, Paramore, Foster The People, Spoon and more than 70 bands on the beautiful white sandy beaches of Gulf Shores.

Food offerings include fresh local seafood offerings prepared by renowned regional chefs in the Alabama Gulf Seafood Courtyard.

Sunset Festival brings a part of Key West to The WharfSet to rival Mallory Square in Key West, Fla. with

their nightly Sunset Celebration, the local restau-rateurs and tenants at The Wharf in Orange Beach

have created a weekly Sunset Festival that will cater to crowds of all ages.

Every Thursday night, the Wharf, along with Aloha Hospitality and other sponsors, have partnered to-gether to create an atmosphere of fun and entertainment with live music, street performers, drink specials and games for the whole family.

The Sunset Festival was created with a “flip flops welcome” kind of vibe. Bob Baumhower, CEO of Aloha Hospitality says “There’s no better combination of en-tertainment, good eatin’, natural beauty and amazing facilities than what we have to offer here at The Wharf with the Sunset Festival.” The Thursday night Sunset Festivals are going to draw vacationers from all over the nation. Top regional bands such as Sugarcane Jane, the Modern Eldorados, Vibe Irie and many other poplar acts are scheduled to highlight this year’s Sunset Festival.

Professional street performers straight out of Key West, South Beach and New Orleans will also be on site entertaining folks with their tight-roping dog acts, fire breathers, jugglers, magicians, face-painting clowns, sword swallowers and more. There will also be the Spectra Laser Light Show that fills the sky with vibrant colors and sounds every night.

All of the participating restaurants and cafés will be providing food and drink specials for the Sunset Festival guests to include the ever popular piña coladas, bush-wackers and daiquiris of all kinds. The Hot Spot, Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill, Ginny Lane, The Cigar Bar, Compleat Angler, Bimini Bob’s and Baumhower’s at the Beach are just a few of the contributing partners to offer Sunset Festival discounts as well as hosting their own live music acts. Come on out and watch the dolphins play and encounter this family friendly, Sunset Festival that’s destined to create lifelong memories for the entire family.

Bimini Bob’s Raw and Rum Bar will be the focal point for the Sunset Festival. Located directly behind the Mar-lin Circle on Main Street at The Wharf, this dockside

one-of-a-kind out-door Boat Bar fea-tures high quality rum cocktails and frozen dai-

quiris, raw oysters and local pee l - and -eat shrimp. This is where all the action will be this summer with

live music coming from all directions, cool coastal breezes and a Bahamian, relaxed atmosphere that everyone looks for while on vacation.

For the biggest entertainment on the coast, look no further than The Wharf in Orange Beach. Located along the gorgeous Intracoastal Waterway, you can enjoy spec-tacular sunsets from the dockside marina, locally owned boutiques and fashionable retail shops and superior dining options can all be found at this all-inclusive enter-tainment district. The Wharf is also home to a state-of-the-art Carmike Cinemas movie theater, as well as the South's tallest Ferris wheel. The whole family can enjoy dolphin and sunset cruises, mini golf and zip lining at Sharky’s Family Adventure Park, laser tag at Arena The Next Level and dockside games such hermit crab racing, ring toss and cornhole at Bimini Bob’s and Baumhower’s at the Beach. The Amphitheater at The Wharf is also set to showcase some of the top musical acts the Gulf Coast will see this spring and summer. Concerts such as Dave Matthews, Boston, Eric Church and The Steve Miller Band will headline this year’s concert series.

The energetic and electrifying summer season is right around the corner and The Wharf will be “the place to be” this summer. You don’t want to miss out on all the Key West style shenanigans and fun.

What kind of fish screams out drag on the first run, has teeth like a bar-racuda, cuts line like slicing through a stick of butter, snaps at your feet like it wants to eat you alive if you’re lucky enough to land it? What kind of fish would most likely jump into the boat if given a chance, yet makes decent table fare? The king mackerel, sometimes called kingfish.

These long, streamline pelagic coastal migratory fish start showing up around the Alabama State Pier in mid-March and hang around our coastal waters till early fall. They seem to arrive when the water tem-perature reaches near 70 degrees, but don’t mind our hot summer temps either.

Juvenile kings are often confused with their cousin, Spanish mackerel. The two main things to look for are the lateral lines and dorsal fins. The kings lateral black line dips significantly about midway down the side. The Spanish lateral line gradually tapers downward instead of a sharp drop.

The dorsal fin on the king is a light grayish to white, whereas the Spanish dorsal fin is black. The juvenile king and Spanish will probably display bright yellow spots, which lends itself to much of the confusion. The king will lose its yellow spots as it reaches adulthood.

Be aware of size and bag limits. Alabama’s recreational size limit for kings is 24-inches minimum fork length and bag limit of two per person per day. Spanish size limit is 12 inches minimum fork length and 15 bag limit per person per day. There is no closed season for either fish.

Actually keeping a king on the line once it strikes your bait can be somewhat of a challenge. When using live bait, they will often strike short to kill the fish which will cause a missed catch. Because of this, it pays to attach a short piece of wire to the main hook with a small stinger treble hook.

A variety of baits will work. Live pogies, croaker, pin-fish, blue runners, frozen cigar minnows along with ar-tificial baits such stretch 25 or 30, different size spoons with or without a No. 2 – No. 3 planer, or anything that flashes to attract their attention.

Don’t be surprised if you see one launch itself about 10 feet in the air like a rocket. Look for birds feeding on bait fish in open water or around the gas rigs in the Gulf.

A variety of fishing methods will yield success, but keep in mind that a wire leader with any type bait is es-sential. Try slow trolling live bait or drifting with the cur-rent around the rigs where bait fish gather. Try different speeds or even different color baits. You will sometimes spot a school much deeper than your bait can reach, so add lead weights as needed or better yet, use a down-

rigger to get the bait to the desired depth. The downrigger can be used for both live or artificial baits.

Have several leader rigs made ahead of time. You’re sure to lose some tackle since the kings are often schooling fish and some will cut the line ahead of your bait.

Be cautious about using shiny lead sinkers. Organize your leaders in Zip-loc bags to avoid tangles. When the action is hot, you don’t want to spend valuable time re-rigging tackle.

Another effective method is to tie directly to the gas rig and chum with cut pogies or other bait, or a chum bag or chum churn. Tie up on the down-current side of the rig, and drift live baits back in the chum slick about six feet under a large cork or balloon. It’s easier to gaff your catch but be sure it’s a legal size. Watch out for those

sharp teeth. It’s always good to have a first aid kit and peroxide on board in case of an accident. Trying to land a king using a net usually creates havoc and could ruin a good net. You can always land the fish by grabbing the tail.

Cleaning your catch is quite simple. The smaller ones are easy to filet since they have no scales. The larger fish make good steaks. Using a sharp knife, score each side making pieces about one and a half inches wide then chop the bone using a meat cleaver. This makes a nice round steak to cook on the grill. Try cutting out the four circular pieces of meat from the steak, wrapping them in bacon then frying or grilling.

How about canning your catch?Pack the circular pieces in a sterilized pint jar.Add one teaspoon salt and seal the jar. Pressure cook for 1 1/2 hours. The fish makes its own liquid and will keep for a long

time in the cabinet. Good to use for salads or fish cakes. When the king meat is cooked on the grill or fried, it turns a beautiful white color. King mackerel is also good to smoke. Experiment to see what is your preference and as with most any fish, removing the bloodline makes for better tasting fish.

Remember, take a kid fishing, obey the rules and get home safe. Any day on the water is fun, and catching fish is always a bonus.

Hugh Davis, branch manager of Han-cock Bank, was born in 1953 in Buford, S.C. His dad was a drill instructor on Par-ris Island with the Marine Corps.

After a short time there, his dad was transferred to Marine Headquarters in Virginia where the family would live for the next four years. His dad, of whom he is immensely proud, had received a field commission, and had to return to school for special training.

A celebrity of sorts, he had been with Edson’s Raiders in WWII, and had earned a Purple Heart in combat in Korea. From Washington they moved to Hawaii for three years, then to Camp Pendleton, Ca-lif. From there his dad was sent to Japan (he was provost marshal for the Marine Corps in southern Japan and Vietnam). Vietnam was heat-ing up so the family had to stay behind in Hialeah, Fla., with an uncle.

Next to San Diego and when his dad retired, they moved to Tallahassee, Fla. Hugh graduated high school with hon-ors in 1971. While in school, he got jobs as an engraver, and also worked part time in the FSU computer department.

He was accepted into the University of Florida where he started out as a zoology major. He ended up with a BS in chemistry and then studied biochemical research on the neurotransmitter dopamine on the dung fungus Phycomy-ces blakesleeanus.

Hugh married his college girlfriend, Donna, and they had four children. Meantime, his mom had started a tro-phy business, and she wanted his help. Hugh went home, and worked in the business with his mom.

He stayed, eventually running the business after his mom retired for another 25 years. After his parents passed away, he eventually sold the business. Hugh then got di-vorced, and his life changed. A couple years after being di-vorced, Hugh met Maryellen. She was an attorney working with Hugh’s attorney. She had been involved in the Shoney discrimination lawsuit, and other interesting cases. Within a year, they were married.

During the initial years following the sale of his tro-

phy shop in Tallahassee, Hugh still had a store in Thomasville, Ga., a com-mercial property busi-ness, he owned a wood shop, opened a Well’s Cargo equipment trailer business and ran the Big Bend Saltwater Classic. He also designed and built satellite communica-tions trailers with Skybase Communica-tions.

Hugh was involved in building some special trailers for FEMA and USAF. Af-ter a couple years, Hugh wanted to move on. One day Mark Simpson whom Hugh had known in business from the 80s, and was managing Hancock Bank in Florida, asked Hugh to come to work for them in

sales. He asked Hugh to be branch manager in a local bank in Tallahassee to help them figure out what was necessary to improve their market share.

The second year he was there, he received the 2010 Top Performing Branch award which he proudly displays in his office. Hancock then offered Hugh the job of branch manager in Gulf Shores, and he, after talking to Maryel-len, accepted. They love the area and its Small Town, Big Beach attitude.

Hugh’s passion is motorcycles. He’s recently hooked up with a group of professional men called the Coastal Motor-cycle Riders. The club members are riders from Mobile, the Gulf Coast, Pensacola, Milton and other nearby areas. The rides are fun, therapeutic and there is all the camaraderie you could ever want.

He could retire but has no desire to do so. He enjoys running the Hancock Bank branch. It has four walls and is retail and he understands it. The bank has a great crew, and a great tradition going back to 1899 of making sure the customers are the first concern. They work as a team and it works out well for everyone.

Hugh told me that most of what he had done in his life, he did because other people had asked him to do some-thing. He had gotten into the trophy business because his mom had asked him to help her run the business.

It was very successful, but after he sold it, he was asked to run the Big Bend Saltwater Classic fishing tournament. His friend Alan Richardson had approached him about be-ing the tournament director. He ran it for nine years.

He came to work the bank when his friend and former banker Mark Simpson called him and asked him to run a special project. He was asked to do work with early satel-lite communications and he did. Though he believed in those words he preached, “Life is too short to chase other people’s dreams,” Hugh himself never followed them.

Hugh is a remarkable gentleman and 100 percent pure class. He is intelligent, articulate, compassionate and a good listener. He’s an asset to the island. Not only is the Island fortunate to have him here, but I’m fortunate to be able to call him a friend.

Capt. Mark asks, ‘Who’s on the Island?’

MARK ROBINSON

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

It was a beau ful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and ge ng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot.

We have both been very dissa sfi ed with the last few a empts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into considera on our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother.

The traffi c was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beau ful.

Pam, my friend, went fi rst since I was a li le chicken a er the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He fi rst looked at her face shape and explained that there are fi ve face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, a er that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condi on her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right.

So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condi oning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of mo on, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was fi nished! She was so happy and she could not believe the diff erence in her hair.

Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made diff erent to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condi oners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condi on our hair the same.

Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. A er we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condi oning my hair had ever had.

While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. A er shampooing and before condi oning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pu ng any condi oner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it fi rst then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave

the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more.

A er she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line

of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bo le. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are defi nitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!Anthony’s salon is at 23175 Perdido Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach & their phone

number is 251.974.1514.

Happy Harbor On the Line to become Flora-Bama additionBy John Mullen [email protected]

The well-known Flora-Bama Lounge and Package Store will be buying the Happy Harbor location on the line adjacent to several other businesses operated by the club.

Happy Harbor fronts Ole River and is directly east of the Flora-Bama Yacht Club, also on Ole River.

Pat McClellan, a part owner of the Flora-Bama for 30 years, confirmed the sale.

He said the business there now has permission to build docks and tentative plans are to put docks between the Yacht Club on the east and Flora-Bama Watersports on the west. A boardwalk connecting the three may also be built in the future, McClellan said.

“We can run it all together there and we think that will work out real well for our restaurants and other properties,” McClellan said.

The addition will make six businesses in the state line area. On the Gulf side is the world-famous roadhouse and on the north side of the road is the Flora-Bama liquor store.

The Harbor location sits between the Flora-Bama Yacht Club and Flora-Bama Watersports which rents boats, jet skis, has fishing charter boats and other water related rentals.

McClellan said the group also has an interest in the Rib Shack which is on the north side of the beach road east of the Waffle House.

The Flora-Bama also owns a house on virtually the same piece of property, sometimes used by musicians, known as the "River House."

“Congratulations to the Flora-Bama,” Don McGill of Happy Harbor on the Line said. “I’m thinking it will help their parking situation quite a bit.”

Harbor officials blew it out one last time with three members of the local band, known to have tons of followers, Hundred Dollar Car, who played on the last day before the Harbor closed. Those members are Chris Bryant, Clay Connor and Johnny Mullen.

“The bottom line is the Flora-Bama is taking over this prop-erty and that’s about it,” McGill said. “The paperwork is going to be signed tomorrow and I just spoke with them a little bit. They didn’t really have any immediate plans as to what it’s going to be. It’ll be part of the Flora-Bama.”

The Happy Harbor Pizzeria and Creamery will remain with-in the Harbor fold. It is located on the far east of the property on the north side of Perdido Beach Boulevard or beach road.

Happy Harbor also operates "The Mothership" on Marina Road and a pizzeria on County Road 4 near Oyster Bay. It pre-viously owned a bar and restaurant near that location as well, but it was recently taken over by Beau Gregory and renamed Beau's Place.

“There will be oyster shucking stations along with a great selection of draft beer,” one of four co-owners Cam Price said. “Crawfish, lots of raw oysters, char-grilled oysters, peel-and-eat shrimp. Things that are fun to eat. We’re going to have a great craft beer selection. We’re going to put in a bunch of walk-in coolers down here, one keg cooler that will feed draft beer into the bar here and into the bar upstairs.”

Patrons can order food at stations both upstairs and down-stairs, much like at the roadhouse on the beach.

Inside upstairs will one big bar room with two full bars serving libations.

John McInnis III and Pat McClellan are two of the Flora-Bamas owners.

Collegiate sand volleyball tournament readies for NCAA recognition

Locals and beach guests are encouraged to pack the stands at the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Champion-ships. NCAA officials will be in town for this year's events as 2015 is the last year before the championships become NCAA-sanctioned.

“Attendance at this year's team and pair championships is more important than ever as our friends at the NCAA will be watching how the city of Gulf Shores, Sports Commission, The Hangout and the Gulf Coast Region Vol-leyball Association partner to deliver an elite collegiate tournament on our beaches,” says Beth Gendler, vice president of sales for the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Sports Commission. “We need locals and visitors to come out and support these athletes and our area as we vie for consideration for the NCAA-sanctioned championship to stay on our beaches.”

AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer says with more than 50 schools sponsoring sand programs around the country, competition is at its best and will bring a whole new level of rivalry to Alabama's beaches.

“The collegiate sand volleyball field is intensely competitive this spring,” says DeBoer. "Upsets hap-pen every weekend, and this year's eight-team field will be the strongest ever. The top collegiate teams battling it out on the world-class beach at Gulf Shores will be an event you won't want to miss."

In conjunction with the AVCA championships, the Gulf Coast Region of USA Volleyball will host a Junior Club and Open Division Beach Volleyball Tournament on Saturday and Sunday (May 1-2), and an adult tournament will also take place on that Saturday. The association is a region of USA Volleyball, the national governing body for sand volleyball in the U.S., and is comprised of club teams from across the nation aspiring to reach the Olympic level. Beachgoers are encouraged to cheer on these youth and adult athletes as they strive to win the series title.

“The Gulf Coast Region plays a huge part in organiz-ing and hosting the AVCA tournament, and everyone involved with the sand championships is very excited that the NCAA has recognized sand volleyball as a sport,” says Shawn Weaver, co-director, board member and coach for the Gulf Coast Region of USA Volleyball. “This only means more available scholarships for our female athletes and more opportunities to play at the next level. Also, the NCAA brings more funding to continue to host the best championships for these players.”

In addition to soaking up the sun courtside, fans and families can enjoy the "Volleyball Village" complete with

food, drink and sports vendors that will accompany the tournament.

CBS Sports is set to capture the action throughout the weekend for television audiences and will air the AVCA championships at a later date.

The Flying Harpoon name is no stranger to the Island. The Gulf Shores based restaurant has a reputa-tion of giving the locals and visitors

exactly what they came to the beach for:

great local entertainment and even better local food.

The idea of opening a second loca-tion came up when owners Neil and Nancy Farina realized the supply and demand of their first location.

“We were doing good in Gulf Shores so this opportunity came up and we decided to go for it and open something up in Orange Beach, “

said Neil Farina. “And it's different. We were hearing a lot of people from Orange Beach didn't want to make the haul to Gulf Shores and the opportunity was too good to turn down.”

Though both venues have a pub-like atmosphere, the Flying Harpoon 2 has an ad-dition that the first location lacked.

“The big thing that's dif-ferent over here is the oyster bar,” Farina said. “We have fresh raw oysters at the oyster bar downstairs seven days a week.”

Another big difference in the restaurant is the amount

of space allowed for customers. “There's also a lot more room and

a lot more tables,” Farina said. “The Flying Harpoon 2 caters a little more towards family and is more like a restaurant."

As for specials, the restaurant changes up their specials depending on what's fresh and available.

“We do different specials and kind of fly by the seat of our pants,” Farina said. “We come up with our stuff by

38 Beachin’ May 2015 GulfVisitorGuide.com

Page 39: Beachin' (May 2015)

seeing what's available and we make our specials accordingly.”

Much like the first location, The Flying Harpoon offers fresh, in-house ingredients and recipes.

“For example, if we do potato skins, we will do our own fresh potato skins,” Farina said. “All of the shrimp is peeled fresh. We get only local sea-food and the shrimp are peeled and deveined here rather than coming like that from the vendor. We also make our own breading for the shrimp.”

The Flying Harpoon 2 has also had some good feedback from their New Orleans style Po-boys, which use bread straight from New Orleans.

The Flying Harpoon 2 currently hosts live music Friday and Saturday and soon to be Sunday afternoon. Besides the live music, there is also a foosball table and a pool table.

Service Industry Night is Sunday through Wednesday night and offers food, app and drink specials from 10 p.m.-2 a.m.

For more information, visit the Fly-ing Harpoon 2 on Facebook.

Local FlavorsMoe’s Original BBQ opens Foley location

By Jay [email protected]

Diners in south Baldwin County now have another option while looking for a place to feast. Moe’s Original BBQ has opened its newest location in

Foley at 20733 Miflin Rd. — in a building located beside Wolf Bay Lodge and the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermen’s Market.

Russell Bush, manager of the Foley location, said he and his staff are excited that the doors are finally open for business.

“It’s been a long time coming, so we are definitely pumped for this,” Bush said. “It’s good to have another location opening and its good to be doing it in a place where there is nothing like this.”

The location for the new restaurant is conveniently located in a growing part of Foley.

“With the Fisherman’s Market next to us and everything that’s growing up on this side of town, it makes for a great place for people to come and enjoy a good meal,” Bush said. “I think this is a special time for Foley, and we’re obviously excited to be a part of it.”

“We already have a few on staff, and we are definitely looking for more people to be cashiers, bartenders and kitchen staff,” he said.

The Foley location is the 37th Moe’s Original BBQ restaurant across the country and the 15th in Alabama.

The company has locations in Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Maine, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Tennessee.
