Today we begin Holy Week, the days during which we journey with Jesus on his way of the cross and anticipate his Resurrection on Easter. Today’s liturgy begins with the procession with palms to remind us of Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem.

The events of Jesus’ Passion are proclaimed in their entirety in today’s Liturgy of the Word. Those events will be proclaimed again when we celebrate the liturgies of the Triduum—Holy Thursday’s Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the Good Friday of the Lord’s Passion, and the Easter Vigil. These days are indeed profound and holy.

In Cycle A, we read the Passion of Jesus as found in the Gospel of Matthew on Palm, or Passion, Sunday. (On Good Friday, we will read the Passion of Jesus from the Gospel of John). The story of Jesus’ Passion and death in Matthew’s Gospel focuses particularly on the obedience of Jesus to the will of his Father. As Jesus sends his disciples to prepare for Passover, he indicates that the events to come are the will of the Father (Matthew 26:18). In Jesus’ prayer in the garden, he prays three times to the Father to take away the cup of suffering, but each time, Jesus concludes by affirming his obedience to the Father’s will (Matthew 26:39-44). Even Matthew’s description of Jesus’ death shows Jesus’ obedience to the Father.

Another theme of Matthew’s Gospel is to show Jesus as the fulfillment of Scripture. Throughout the Passion narrative, Matthew cites and alludes to Scripture to show that the events of Jesus’ Passion and death are in accordance with all that was foretold. And if the events were foretold, then God is in control. In addition, Matthew is particularly concerned that the reader does not miss the fact that Jesus is the Suffering Servant of the Old Testament.

Jesus acts in obedience to the Father even in death, so that sins may be forgiven. Matthew makes this clear in the story of the Lord’s Supper. As Jesus blesses the chalice, he says: “. . . for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins.” (Matthew 26:28)

While the Gospels of Matthew and Mark have many parallels in their narrative of the Passion, there are a few details worth noting that are unique to Matthew. Only Matthew indicates the price paid to Judas for betraying Jesus. The story of Judas’s death is also found only in Matthew, as is the detail that Pilate’s wife received a warning in a dream and that Pilate washed his hands of Jesus’ death. Finally, Matthew’s Gospel alone mentions the earthquakes and other phenomena that happened after Jesus’ death.

Matthew places the responsibility for Jesus’ death on the Sanhedrin, the chief priests and elders who were responsible for the Temple. However, the animosity that those Jewish leaders and the Jewish people demonstrate toward Jesus is not to be interpreted in ways that blame the Jewish people for Jesus’ death. Throughout Matthew’s Gospel, the narrative reflects the tension that probably existed between the early Christian community and their Jewish contemporaries. At the Second Vatican Council, the Council Fathers made clear that all sinners share responsibility for the suffering and death of Jesus and that it is wrong to place blame for Jesus’ Passion on the Jewish contemporaries of Jesus or on Jewish people today.

There are many vantage points from which to engage in Jesus’ Passion. In the characters of Matthew’s Gospel, we find reflections of ourselves and the many ways in which we sometimes respond to Jesus. Sometimes we are like Judas, who betrays Jesus and comes to regret it. We are sometimes like Peter, who denies him, or like the disciples, who fell asleep during Jesus’ darkest hour but then act rashly and violently at his arrest. Sometimes we are like Simon, who is pressed into service to help Jesus carry his cross. Sometimes we are like the leaders who fear Jesus or like Pontius Pilate, who washed his hands of the whole affair. Jesus dies so that our sins will be forgiven.

The events of Jesus’ Passion, death, and Resurrection are called the Paschal Mystery. No amount of study will exhaust or explain the depth of love that Jesus showed in offering this sacrifice for us. After we have examined and studied the stories we have received about these events, we are left with one final task—to meditate on these events and on the forgiveness that Jesus’ obedience won for us. AT A TIME WHEN WE ARE MOST

VULNERABLE, EVIL TRIES TO LURE US

INTO DECEPTION

The Diocese of Trenton has issued an alert regarding reports of email and text scams that will use the name of a pastor to solicit funds in the form of gift cards or cash donations. The warning follows a recent report on CBS Philly about parishes in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia being targeted. The email usually begins with a simple “Hi,” but no recipients’ name, and asks for financial help for a worthy cause. The pastor’s name concludes the email. Several pastors in the Diocese of Trenton have already heard from parishioners who received emails or text messages, seemingly from the pastor, asking for donations. The Diocese takes this opportunity to advise parishioners that pastors do not raise money in this manner and to exercise the utmost caution when receiving this type of communication. Some law enforcement in the area urge parishioners to question any email or text that doesn’t come from a person in their contacts. If the person is not known, a parishioner should call the person asking for funds to verify the story. If a pastor’s name is used, parishioners should contact the parish to verify the legitimacy of the appeal. Anyone who feels that they have been the victim of this type of scam is urged to contact their local police department.

God bless us all and protect us. O Mary, Mother of Divine Love, protect and lead us

to the heart of your Son.

FEELING STRESSED DURING

THIS DIFFICULT TIME? These are uncharted waters, and it’s normal to have anxiety and worry. Here are some suggestions on how to maintain your sanity and feel good during this pandemic especially if you are practicing social distancing or working at home:

Don’t forget about the power of prayer. Praying can calm your fears and anxieties when you feel out of control.

Remember to eat as healthy as you can and hydrate! Take your vitamins too.

Don’t forget to get some exercise. You can always go for a walk or review your on-line or TV options for exercise shows.

Spring clean early! It’s time for a good house scrub down anyway. Just make sure to whistle while you work.

Check in with your neighbors. Are they are doing okay? Do you have provisions you could share?

Journal about what you are experiencing. Sometimes just venting is helpful.

It’s okay to laugh. Watch a funny movie or show.

Catch up on your reading with a good book or your kindle.

Tell yourself, even aloud, that “this is not forever”. Our normal way of life will return.

Virtual contact – FaceTime for one or other group activities with dial in connection. Reach out to someone you have been thinking about and reconnect.

Maintain a daily schedule. A consistent routine will go a long way to keeping your stress at bay.

Just think! You can work at home in your PJs or at least your fuzzy slippers!

Don’t forget to spend some time outside. Getting in touch with the nature God gave us can make a huge difference in our moods.

Listen to music. It has been found to lower blood pressure, slow down your pulse, and reduce stress hormones.

“Worrying does not take away tomorrow's troubles; it takes away today's peace.” Anonymous.

RECTORY OFFICE CLOSED The Rectory Office will be closed to public access until further notice. The staff is working remotely; telephone contact is limited to voice mail messages, which will be returned as soon as possible. Please continue to send in your much needed weekly donation envelopes during this temporary closure. They will continue to be posted to your account as usual. Staff can also be reached via e-mail. PRAYER TO ST. VINCENT DE PAUL IN TIME OF ILLNESS

O Saint Vincent de Paul, our father and model, Throughout your life you wished

To imitate Jesus, the missionary and servant. In your time, you confronted

The plague, the illness of the people. Interceded now with the Holy Trinity

On behalf of all the nations on earth visited by the modern scourge. Help the bodies and hearts of all victims.

Strengthen caregivers, be close to all neighbors, and enlighten researchers. Walk with those approaching the portals of death.

As you gave strong and ardent advice to struggle against evil,

So now come to our aid! Teach us how to expose our lives for the weakest among us,

And strengthen us to help them better In fearless perseverance.

With the sole desire of aiding them in their needs, Open our spirits to God’s infinite providence. Let us endow it with his total will for action. Inspire in us, also, obedience to our leaders, As we now place ourselves in their hands,

Confident and fortified with genuine feelings of dedication and zeal For our sisters and brothers.

Amen.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God (Matt 4:4)

Our St. Vincent de Paul Society is still helping our neighbors in need. Please drop off nonperishable food donations in the baskets in the Church. Someone from St. Vincent de Paul will collect the food each day. During this very trying time, we must not forget the less fortunate of our community and how we can be of assistance to them. As always, thank you for your generosity.

In the wise words of St. Vincent de Paul

“To serve the poor is to serve Jesus…… Love the poor. Honor them, my children, as you would honor Christ Himself.”

DAILY REFLECTIONS FOR HOLY WEEK

Monday, April 6 GOD MADE YOU WHOLE AND COMPLETE.

"IN HIS BODY LIVES THE FULLNESS OF DIVINITY,

AND IN HIM YOU TOO FIND YOUR OWN FULFILLMENT." (Colossians 2:9) In the movie "The Wizard of Oz" the characters are living their lives with the belief that something is missing inside them. The Tin man lacks a brain, the Scarecrow a heart, the Cowardly lion lacks courage and Dorothy lacks a sense of belonging, of being connected. Through their journey, and facing their fears, represented by the wicked witch, they come to discover that Oz didn't give them anything they didn't already possess inside themselves. What Oz gave them was the belief. In this life, death and resurrection, Jesus powerfully communicates to us that we are created in the image of the Father, that the Father loves us as we are and that we live with the resurrected power of Christ. This belief says to us, there is nothing we need that we don't already possess. Do you believe the kingdom of God, all your needs are within you?

Tuesday, April 7 GOD HAS BEEN WITH YOU ALL ALONG.

"I WILL BE WITH YOU UNTIL THE END OF TIME." (Matthew 28:20) As we grow in the spiritual life, we become more aware of the existence of invisible realities. Clearly, there are other realities that exist besides the reality you can see, touch and hear with your physical senses. There are the realities of God's presence. This presence is experienced whenever we give our love away or are loved by another. Today, reflect on the various times you have loved another or experienced being loved, and realize it was then, that you met the living God.

Wednesday, April 8 WE ARE CALLED TO BECOME BRAND NEW.

"LO, I AM ABOUT TO CREATE NEW HEAVENS AND A NEW EARTH; THE THINGS OF THE PAST SHALL NOT BE REMEMBERED OR COME TO MIND." (Isaiah 65: 17)

Some people believe that the more you grow spiritually, the more things you have to give up. The belief that the spiritual life is one of discipline and sacrifice is not true. Certainly discipline and sacrifice are part of healthy spirituality, but only to bring about more joy, peace and inner strength. Our problem is we get so used to the familiar, we fear letting go of our attachments will cause deprivation. Jesus calls us to grow and become new. He knows that letting go of the old will result in abundant living.

Holy Thursday, April 9 WE ARE ALL ONE IN CHRIST; THERE ARE NO CATEGORIES.

"AND THERE ARE NO MORE DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN JEW AND GREEK, SLAVE AND FREE, MALE AND FEMALE, BUT ALL OF YOU ARE ONE IN CHRIST JESUS." (Galatians 3:28)

When you think about this passage from Galatians, it becomes painfully clear that prejudice or feeling better than or less than anyone else is totally inconsistent with the gospel of Christ. How can anyone claim to be an authentic disciple and still judge others by the color of their skin or the amount of money they have in their pocket? On this Holy Thursday, when Jesus humbles himself by washing the disciple’s feet, reflect on your perceptions of others who are externally different from you. Realize today that internally, we're all the same. We all want to love and be loved; to know and to be known.

Good Friday, April 10 ARE YOU A PERSON OF PASSION?

"A MAN CAN HAVE NO GREATER LOVE THAN TO LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." (John 15:13) There's no cry more poignant in our literature than Emily's in Thornton Wilder's "Our Town". Recall the sad moment before she returns to her grave on the hill. "Good-by, good-by world. Good-by Grover's Comers, Mama and Papa Good-by to clocks ticking ... and Mama's sunflowers, and food and coffee, and new-ironed dresses and hot baths, and sleeping and waking up. Oh earth, you're too wonderful for anybody to realize you. Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it every minute?" Jesus Christ, He died-so that you might LIVE!

Holy Saturday, April 11 WITH EVERY DEATH THERE IS RESURRECTION.

"THE SON OF MAN IS TO BE HANDED OVER TO MEN AND THEY WILL KILL HIM AND THREE DAYS AFTER HIS DEATH HE WILL RISE." (Mark 9:31-32)

Letting go is an important aspect of the spiritual life. To grow, we may have to let go of an attitude, such as anger or sadness. Sometimes we have to let go of an old familiar way of seeing ourselves. Realize that the dynamic of death and resurrection is always operative in our lives. Learn to be open to the new and release the old, negative ways that get in the way of your growth. Know that God is constantly calling us to become more. He is always seeking to provide opportunities that heal that which has been broken and re-create our lives.

Easter Sunday, April 12 BEHOLD I MAKE ALL THINGS NEW.

"FOR ANYONE WHO IS IN CHRIST, THERE IS A NEW CREATION." (2 Corinthians 5:17) Have you ever seriously asked yourself, "Why did Jesus die on a cross?" Our own personal answer to this question will directly manifest itself through the way we live out our Catholic Christianity. Some people believe Jesus died so we could have religion and go to Mass on Sunday. Some believe he died so the pearly gates could be opened. For those people, Jesus remains at a distance and they live cautiously. For those who believe Jesus died so that we might become brand new people, these people know good news; they know Jesus and his powerful love. So again, "Why did Jesus die on a cross and how does this impact on your life?"
