    Ever since the start 80 years ago, libraries have been theheart of our business. Today, we are proud to call ourselveslibrary people. Libraries and their design are our passionand our mission. With commitment and curiosity,experience and expertise, we create innovative,expressive and functional solutions for the modern library.

    Libraries are changing. Still, books and studies are essential, but you will also nd a vivid environmentlled with cultural exchange, communication and social events. Here, contemplation and re ectionnds its place next to the fast pace of new information technology.

    Working in close co-operation with architects, interior designers, craftsmen and librarians, we provide knowledgeand creativity in our designs and the innovative furniture and accessories needed to turn ideas into reality.

    Built on localcommitmentByens hus is the name of the communitycentre in the small village Jelling. The houseis a good example of local entrepreneurshipand cooperative spirit. The local citizens haveworked together with organizations and themunicipality to start the centre.

    Besides the library, the centre also accommo-dates public service, meeting rooms and a caf.The caf is equipped with its own stage fordifferent performances. Byens hus is truly acultural meeting point, including an art work-shop, a cinema and a small brewery.

    The library is furnished with the Classic SteelShelving System, London end panel and canopy,and built-in Book Big Lighting. There are also

    special-made solutions like the integrated tablesat the ends of the shelving and the roundpicture book browsers in the childrens area.

    The Jelling Runic Stones

    The new library is not the only thing worth seeing when you visit Jelling. Dont missthe opportunity to discover the world famous Jelling runic stones, raised more than1,000 years ago by King Gorm the Old and his son Harald Bluetooth. The runes tellthe story of Denmarks birth and the of cial conversion to Christianity.

    Today, the stones are listed as one of UNESCOs world heritage sites and old HaraldBluetooth and his runic inscriptions have made an impact on communicationtechnology up until this day, as the technology for wireless data transmission,Bluetooth is named after him.

    Plattanin new lightKulturhuset, Stockholms community centrefor culture is located right in the heart of thecity at the main commuter hub and the squareknown as Plattan. The cultural centre isa vibrant meeting-place day and night withthousands of contemporary cultural events

    every year. The library at the centre, a branch of theStockholm Public Library, is no exception. It isplaced in level with the famous square andis consequently named Plattan Library.They focus on Swedish and international

    ction, and have also a special section forbooks on art, design, architecture and fashion.On the same oor, there is a gallery, a cafand a book shop.

    The architecture of the Plattan Library isbuilt around glass. The new entrance and thelarge windows let the light pour in. At the sametime, it creates an open interface to the outsideand offers an appetizing view for all the peoplepassing here everyday.

    The refurbished interiors provide an exciting interplay between shelving and lighting. The collaboration with the Swedish light manufacturer Atelj Lyktanand their state-of-the-art LED overhead lighting, throws new light on theClassic Steel Shelving System, in both straight lines and round shapes.

    Playing with traditionsLa Filoche is the name of a recently opened medialibrary in the Moselle and Madon urban district,in the surroundings of Nancy. The name nowunites the past with the future since it is also thehistorical name of the site.

    The 1,850 sqm large building is the outcome of an ambitious project of urban planning andindustrial rehabilitation. The territory identity iscarefully preserved, and yet clearly modernized asindustrial styled architectural elements are inte-grated to the original faade.

    With its dedicated areas for multimedia and thetoy library, La Filoche media library has a two-levelstructure. The interior design combines woodwith industrial materials. The play areas for

    children are bright and awash with colour, andthe rest of the library is transparent, light andairy. The Classic Steel Shelving System has beenenhanced with multi-coloured acrylic end panels.

    Green light forSindals new oasisThe public library in Sindal is located under thesame roof as the local citizen service. A buildingthat unfortunately had a re incident not longago. Now, the library is happily re-opened,colourful furnished by BCI and the architectDorthe Andersen.

    The new interior design is clearly harmonizedwith its beautiful surroundings. Just as thenature outside, the theme for the interior isgreen. Green details appear around the library,connecting rooms and departments in acontinual green ow throughout the premises. To compliment this green theme, Sindal publiclibrary is equipped with white lacquered ClassicSteel Shelving System and furniture in bright,

    pure colours.

    The campus centreWhen the students of Vestfold University Collegearrived for the autumn term 2010, the newcampus, Campus Bakkenteigen, welcomedthem. The campus gathers all key functions inone place, and, of course, this is also the locationfor the new library.

    The library is essentially designed for learning.The result includes access to the latest informationresources, professional guidance and service.The two-storey building offers attractive architectureand different kinds of learning environments andworkstations for inspiring studies.

    The eastern faade is characterized by large glasssections that make the most out of the daylight andgive a stunning atmosphere inside the building.

    Bauhaus anno 2010The economist, politician and defender of civilrights, Ernest Lluch Martn was born in Vilassarde Mar in 1937. Today, the towns new librarycarries his name: Biblioteca Municipal ErnestLluch i Martn.

    Mrius Quintana, an architect from Barcelonaand the curator of the Mies Van Der RohePavilion since 1999, designed the buildingfor the library. It is signi ed by lightness,transparency, spaciousness and functionality.The Opal Shelving System makes a perfect tto the architecture.

    The law of Scandinavian designThe library at Malms Court of Appeal, MalmHovrtt, takes Scandinavian design to court.The colours are light, the materials are naturaland everything is perfectly functional. A placefor research, reading and re ection.

    The interior solution is designed by WhiteArchitects and consists of several Lammhultspieces and a bespoke made version of theround Classic Steel Shelving System withperforated back panels. Scenes of Malmwere the inspiration for the design of theperforated back panels by White Architects.

    Pioneer inLEDlightingIn October 2008, Eccles Library closed its doorsfor over 18 months to undergo an extensiverefurbishment and restoration programme.

    The library restoration works have resultedin a brighter, more welcoming space for all

    users and visitors. The shelving and furniturespeci ed along with the colours selected havebeen carefully chosen to not only blend in withthe wonderful period features of the buildingbut to also offer the modern ambience that anynew build library would strive to offer. Whethervisitors to the library are on a journey of learning, exploration and discovery, or simplyafter some time out, the newly refurbishedEccles library has got something for everyone.

    Eccles library is also the rst library to bene t from the installationof integrated LEDlighting into the Slimline Shelving System.The lighting was speci ed on the shelving to enhance the lux levelsin the building, but is also an aesthetic design feature.

    Industrial traditionmeets contemporary artIn Oslo, the old Christiania Seilduksfabrikk(canvas factory) by Akerselva River at Grner-lkka has been reconstructed to accommodateKunsthgskolen ( KHiO), the National Academyof the Arts. The buildings are from the late 19thcentury and carry a rich industrial tradition.

    Now, they are transformed into a spectacularvenue for cultural expressions and a completeschool of art.

    The old factory has a total area of 40,000 sqmand the library is an important part. With amix of old and new, the design gives room forcreativity and cares for the history. The library isone of the most modern in Norway and a vitalresource for students and faculty.

    Four libraries lled with visionsManchesters Library Service is undergoing adramatic change. The citys public estates arebeing modernised, refurbished and replacedover a ve-year programme. Four of the projectsin the programme this year include LongsightLibrary, Beswick Library, Brooklands Library, and

    the Central Library.

    After a substantial refurbishment, inside andout, The Longsight Library is set to be a truelandmark library and learning centre. The oldred-bricked building has transformed into sleekglass box ooding with light. It is lled with the

    learning resources, technology and relaxationareas with a caf and even a kitchen for visitors.

    Beswick Library and Brookland Library bothbreak new ground in that they are public librariessharing premises with schools. The buildings are

    state-of-the-art and the concept makes a focalpoint for the communities they serve.

    The iconic Central Library is being beautifullyand sensitively restored from the ground andwill re-open in 2013. In the meantime, the CityLibrary on Deansgate takes its place. In contra-

    diction to the old Central Library, the City Libraryis bright, airy and very colourful. It is an oasisof tranquillity in the bustling city centre.

    All four libraries are equipped with Classic SteelShelving System and specially made key pieces

    of furniture, designed to highlight the currentquick pick collections and encourage browsing.The striking lighting re ects the glossy surfaceon the quick pick furniture. The libraries sharethe same basic concept, but the unique colourthemes and a couple of characteristic detailsgive each library its own identity.

    Designed for completecultural experiencesCentro de Arte, the cultural centre, in Alcobendasis a hub for the plastic arts, music and liberalarts. It is centrally situated right in the citysstreetscape. Fernando Parrilla is the architectbehind the emblematic building, characterizedby its avant-garde faade, organic projections and

    glass sections. The design idiom invites visitorsto enter and listen, observe, participate and learn.

    The media library opens up to an amazing worldof information, books and media technology.Children, adolescents and adults have especiallydesignated areas, but visitors of all ages meetin the space for innovation. A spot to hang out,read a book, browse the web or listen tosome music. The look of this area changeswith the sunlight.

    The versatile furniture among others theOpal Shelving System with end panels of perforated steel follows and strengthens thearchitecture and the buildings philosophy.

    An old building lledwith modern ideasThe new public library for the Taastrup areaoutside Copenhagen is actually the amalgationof three libraries becoming one. The old townhall of Taastrup has been carefully renovatedto a cultural meeting place and media centre.The building with its old traditions now houses

    the former libraries of Blkilde, Rnnevang andTaastrup.

    The architecture meets the demands of amodern library where access to e-books is asimportant as the traditional books. Mobility,

    exibility and interaction has been the leadingmotivation for the project. The result is aninspiring library that brings new life to thetown hall.

    Dubai Public Libraries consist of 8 public libraries distributed throughout the Emirate of Dubai. Mohammed Al Eraidi isdirector of Dubai Public Libraries and has many years of experience within the library and information sector.He has brought best practices from around the world to Dubai such as RFID technology.

    A new level of aestheticsThe public libraries in Dubai are run by DubaiPublic Libraries. Their rst library was esta-blished in 1963 and today they have eight publiclibraries in different places around the Emirateof Dubai. Seven of them offer special childrendepartments. The latest branch, at Al Mankhool

    Street, is an impressive piece of work.

    The design of the Al Mankhool public libraryoffers the latest fashion in functionality andstyle. The premises have several divisions,

    designed to meet the speci c needs of thevisitors. There is the VIP area, a colourfulchildrens department, a multi-purpose hallwith a lot of research resources, and, last butnot least, there is a relaxing lounge area.

    The library is furnished with Opal ShelvingSystem.
