Around the World 2004

Eurobib and BCI

Eurobib and BCI are world leaders in library interiors, with over sixty years of experience in the field.

We work with leading architects, designers, and craftspeople to develop furniture and furniture

systems for the library of today and the future.

We take into account a wide variety of new influences.

The library is no longer just a place for books and studies, but a hub for multicultural exchange,

communication, and social events. At the same time the library is a space for contemplation, with room

for individual study and reflection.

Our aspiration is to be on the absolute cutting edge to meet and respond to the needs and

developments of libraries, whether planning the interior of the local school library or designing custom

furniture for a new international research center.

This brochure describes some of our recent projects. We hope it will serve as a source of inspiration.

The library in Haarlemmermeer Floriande represents the very latest in technology, architecture, and interior design, in

which self-service is the central concept.

The building exterior serves as a landmark in a new neighborhood, and its boldness brashly continues inside the

building. Interior designer Aat Vos has used light flows and materials in an innovative way.

BCI´s Opal shelving system has been an important element in this context, where the end panels’ transparency

and neon effect define the entire interior design.

Albertslund Public Library

Albertslund

When the public library in Albertslund was to be renovated, serious moisture

problems were discovered and the municipality took the radical decision to tear

down the old and build a brand new building.

The entire project is light and airy, with daylight and natural ventilation serving

as important factors to create a good indoor environment. The designers chose

materials based on durability, only using materials that age well.

The shelving system is a Hennings Larsens Tegnestue design, based on BCI’s Classic

Steel shelving and finished in a custom colour selected just for Albertslund.

Architect: Frank Drewniak, Henning Larsens Tegnestue. Developer’s project

manager: Christian Johannesson; Niels Dejgaard, municipal librarian.

Kuwanda Media Live is a culture and service centre that houses the public

library, as well as a medical centre, youth centre, and multipurpose hall.

The library is on the top floor to give the greatest contact with the

heavens through the large glass panels, a design based on a Japanese Torii, or

gateway to the temple of the gods.

The study halls are furnished with Index study tables, which feature a

clean design with open end panels to harmonize perfectly with both the

interior and exterior idiom.

Bagnolet Media Library

Bagnolet

Page 12: BCI Library Projects (2004)

Bagnolet is a suburb of Paris with a dynamic library tradition that the new library also lives up to, as interpreted

by Xavier Gonzalez.

The Media Library is located on the ground floor of a multi-dwelling building in an effort to ”bring the books

closer to the people” and it is actually first at dusk that the architectural features of the facility are showcased.

Hundreds of milky white lights hang like clouds behind large picture windows to create a focal point of light

visible from afar. BCI’s Opal shelving system serves as the basis of all storage and display.

Interior designer: Xavier Gonzalez. Developer’s project manager: Dominica Brigaud, head librarian.

Perched on the most beautiful site in all of Kuusankoski, right by the Kymmene River, is the city’s new

public library.

A ceremonial vestibule greets visitors, signaling calm and tranquility before they enter the library.

Large panorama windows face the Kymmene River, enhancing the sense of space and light.

The interior is based on Eurobib’s Gothia shelving system in metal and frosted white glass, which

serves as an extension of the building’s spirit.

Architect: Brunow & Naunula. Interior designer: Laura Mattila. Developer’s project manager:

Petri Liukkonen, head librarian.

Instituto Cervantes

Berlin

Instituto Cervantes, an organization dedicated to promoting Spanish and

Latin American culture, is located on Rosenstraße in Berlin. At the top of

the building, beneath the rafters, is a two-story library.

The Gothia shelving system with its clean design in steel and frosted

white glass, harmonizes with the understated industrial idiom of the

space. In contrast, the shelves are topped off in birch to create a gentle

transition to the rest of the furnishings from Eurobib and BCI, including

Opal desks and Softline counters.

Interior designer: Christina Olofsson Lefèvre, Eurobib. Developer’s

project manager: Cristina Barón Martin.

Ringe Public Library

Ringe

The interplay between old and new is striking in the library in

Ringe. The old library in the former town hall was painstakingly

renovated and also received a modern addition. The classic

book environment has been just as carefully integrated into the

digital environment.

The many rooms are located on several different levels

linked by bridges, stairs, and elevators. Despite this complexity,

all the parts are woven into a cohesive whole, with the Index

shelving system serving as a key component, its characteristic

square end panels providing the entire library with a unified

identity.

Architect: Michael Peterson, Clausen & Weber. Interior

designer: Brian Möinichen Wendin.

Farmington Public Library

Farmington

The library in Farmington, New Mexico, has an active calendar.

The activities are many, offering everything from featured authors

to computer courses. The role of the library as a venue for general

activities has influenced its design and its many multipurpose rooms

satisfy a wide variety of needs.

The library takes maximum advantage of daylight through its

large glass panels, and the bold colour scheme gives the building a

clear personality. BCI’s Opal shelving system with frosted glass end

panels supports the building design’s feeling of light and airiness.

Concertina counters also come from BCI.

Architect: Bill Hidell, Hidell Associates Architects.

A center for inspiration that creates pleasure and the opportunity to learn, experience, and develop

– an intelligent, interactive building with a focus on maximum self-service. This is the mission of

Næstved Public Library.

And the library is undeniably on the absolute cutting edge in terms of both content and design.

The choice of BCI’s Classic Steel shelving system, is a logical consequence of this mission. The modern

idiom combined with superior flexibility is the perfect counterpoint to these visions.

Architect: Jan Amby, Ak83. Interior designer: Brian Möinichen Wendin. Developer’s project

manager: Nanna Dreyer Stryhn, municipal librarian.
