MISSION STATEMENT
ONE BILLION PEOPLE ACROSS THE WORLD LACK ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS*. EACH DAY, MORE THAN 36,000 PEOPLE DIE PREVENTABLE DEATHS. WITHOUT ADDRESSING POVERTY AND POOR HEALTH, WE CANNOT BREAK THIS CYCLE OF SUFFERING. UNIVERSITY STUDENTS HAVE THE PASSION AND ENERGY TO HELP TACKLE THIS CHALLENGE. GLOBEMED AIMS TO MEET THIS CHALLENGE BY ENGAGING AND TRAINING STUDENTS TO WORK WITH GRASSROOTS ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS THE WORLD TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF THE IMPOVERISHED. BY PARTNERING STUDENTS AND COMMUNITIES TO COMBAT POVERTY AND POOR HEALTH, WE IMPROVE THE LIVES OF THOUSANDS OF IMPOVERISHED PEOPLE ACROSS THE WORLD TODAY AND SHAPE TOMORROW’S LEADERS ACROSS ALL PROFESSIONS WHO WILL SHARE A DEEP COMMITMENT TO HEALTH EQUITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE.

ABOUT US GlobeMed at Boston College
GlobeMed at Boston College was selected as a new chapter in the Summer of 2010. Due to changes in the Student Programs Office, the chapter has had trouble becoming an official club, but is fighting to become recognized. We formed our partnership in the fall of 2010 with an organization known as CCC-UNSCH which works with elderly adult health out of Ayacucho, Peru. In the summer of 2011, four members of the chapter will go meet our partner for the first time. Although unrecognized this year, GlobeMed at Boston College managed to find a dedicated group of 33 students who raised over $2,000 for our partner.!

KEY FACT: 28.3% of the population over age 15 is illiterate.!
[About CCC-UNSCH]
FOUNDED IN 1977
CCC-UNSCH was founded in 1977 in order to provide better healthcare to the elderly population in the area. In the fall of 2010, GlobeMed at Boston College was partnered with this amazing organization, and we have been working with them to start a series of projects. These projects this year will include incoming generating programs, as well as planting a garden for their nutrition program.!!
[WORKS IN AYACUCHO, PERU]
POPULATION: 151,019 Centro de Capacitacion de Campesino de la Universidad Nacional San Cristobal de Huamanga Ayacucho (CCC-UNSCH) is based in the Ayacucho area, the capital city of the Huamanga province of Peru. During the 1980s this region underwent conflict when a communist party known as the Shining Path tried to oppose the government. In terrorist acts, men, women, and children were killed, and this caused a long term post traumatic stress syndrome in many of the people. Many of the people of this region can gain access to general healthcare for free, but specialty healthcare costs money. Most of the time the people cannot afford specialists, or the medication they prescribe, so diseases will go untreated.!!

[Why nutrition and income generation?]!The nutrition program is crucial to the health of the individuals involved in this program. With a small garden, members of the community will be able to obtain fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as sell the surplus. With the income generating project, members of the community will be given sewing machines to create different items which they can sell at the market. With this money, the people can improve their lifestyle, breaking the cycle of poverty and disease.!
Supporting several income-generating projects for the impoverished elderly in Ayacucho, Peru.!
!In 2010-2011 we funded two projects with our partner. The first project was buying seeds so that the community could farm and
have crops to eat, as well as sell any surplus. This impacted over 60 older adults in the community, and will give them food to eat
after the upcoming harvest. !!
The second project we funded was an income generation project. Here we bought spools of yarn as well as sewing machines so that
the artisans of the town could make products to sell at market. This project impacted over 70 older adults in the community,
almost all of which previously did not have jobs.!

Since 2010, GlobeMed at Boston College has raised a total of over $2,000 to support CCC-UNSCH's nutrition program, and income generation project in
Ayacucho, Peru.!
GLOBALHEALTHU
globalhealthU at Boston College was important to our group formation this past year. As a new chapter, we were able to use globalhealthU discussions to get to know each other better while simultaneously exchanging important ideas. One topic which was key to our understanding of our partner was the issue of conflict and health. Since our partner is situated in an area with a history of political strife, we were able to better empathize with their situation after discussing the effects this conflict has on the people's health and economy. Another key lesson, learned during the LGBT and health segment, was that many health issues are related to discrimination and vulnerability in general, and are not inherently related to a person's sexual orientation. After having such passionate conversation within our group, we are excited to expand our discussion to the greater Boston College community in the upcoming year.!

Being our first year, we thought it would be crucial to create a tight-knit community, in which everyone felt comfortable sharing their ideas. Some of the retreats were focused around preparing dinner as a group, scavenger hunts, and other group game activities. Through these activities, the chapter learned to work together, and many friendships were formed. !

Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students make a positive impact in the community by working alongside their partner organization

We became accustomed to the lifestyle they live, and the challenges they face every day. With this knowledge, we are able to better fund raise for specific projects. Also, we helped to plant a garden in the community, which everyone can gain fresh fruits and vegetables from. !

WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE
GLOBEMED AT BOSTON COLLEGE joined 31 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 3rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2011, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an open-ended, thought provoking question relating to social justice. !!OUR QUESTION: Our responsibility as students is ________.!!BEHIND THE SCENES: Our chapter chose to ask this question hoping to make students understand that although they are in fact only students, they do have a responsibility in striving for social justice. We hoped that framing the question like this, students would understand that they can have an impact.!!MORE WDSJ ACTION -----------------------------------!!GUERILLA MARKETING: Students posted facts about social justice on blackboards throughout campus.!!!

OUR FUTURE
For the upcoming 2011-2012 year, GlobeMed at Boston College is hoping to expand its fundraising goals for our partner. One of our partners is a group of talented artisans, and we hope to set up a website, as well as a table in the local dining hall, in order to sell the goods they are producing. Aside from fundraising, we hope to get a few big speakers in global health to come to campus and address the student body.!
“Being a part of GlobeMed at Boston College let me realize that even a small student-run group can make an impact on a much larger level. I felt very connected to the chapter because of our common goal to help support our partner organization, CCC-UNSCH, and the new friendships I made over the past year reflect that. In addition, the discussions we had last semester opened my eyes to health issues that many people often overlook, ranging from LGBT health discrimination to insufficient malaria research funding. Many of these topics allowed me to view my own life in a different light and have strengthened my desire to become a medical professional.” !
