President’s MessageOn behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to submit the Heritage BC 2010 Annual Report.

I began my 2009 report by saying it had been the most challenging year in Heritage BC’s history. Unfortunately, 2010 was not much easier.

For Heritage BC, 2010 will be remembered as the year of the “Call to Renew” British Columbia’s heritage program. Our challenge last August to the provincial government to recognize and respond to the crisis in heritage was soon echoed by many voices from across the province. Community heritage groups, professionals and individuals have written to the heritage minister and the premier. They have talked to their MLAs. Municipal councils and community heritage commissions have passed resolutions in support of Heritage BC’s call to action, and forwarded them to the Union of B.C. Municipalities and regional municipal organizations. Heritage BC is extremely encouraged by this wonderful demonstration of support.

So far, the call has not been answered. The rapid-fire changes in provincial ministries, ministers and senior staff that have resulted from the turmoil in B.C. politics have made it more than usually difficult to get a result.

Nonetheless, in the coming year Heritage BC will continue to press for a positive outcome, assured in the knowledge that heritage still matters for our communities and all British Columbians. That belief is founded on the dedication of our members who work for and value our irreplaceable heritage resources.

Executive Director’s MessageThese are not only hard times for heritage in B.C., but a time of change. Change can be unsettling, even threatening, as we let go of the familiar and comfortable. But it is also an opportunity for renewal.

Innovation is often a key to navigating the seas of change. I believe Heritage BC is doing well in that regard, finding better and more efficient ways to meet our goals. For instance, by having staff work out of home offices we have reduced expenses and our carbon footprint.

some change is subtle yet profound. Over the past couple of years we have seen a number of leaders in the heritage field head into retirement. Two or three decades ago, these people were the founders of what grew to become the established heritage movement in B.C. With this changing of the guard, we need to ensure that the resources and opportunities are there for the next generation that will bring fresh ideas and optimism about the future.

We must also offset pessimism about the current situation with a positive and practical plan of action. so while last year we concentrated on our call for the renewal of British Columbia’s heritage program, this year Heritage BC will follow up with a new strategic vision and plan for the years ahead. The annual conferences in Victoria this fall of the Association for Preservation Technology, the International National Trust Organization and the Heritage Canada Foundation may provide just the kind of excite-ment and energy needed to kick-start a new era for heritage conservation in B.C.
