Biggest Morning Tea

Congratulations to our SRC, Miss Koch and all classes for holding a very special morning tea to raise awareness for cancer research. A big well done to Madhi, who has raised over $500 dollars alone and followed through with a big shave of the head.

The sea of yellow throughout the school no doubt has also played its part also in raising awareness.

Learning Celebrations – final reminder

All families should have received this week a notice regarding the Learning Celebrations. Over the years, we have encouraged student voice to lead the conferences, and this will continue in a group conference format. So a reminder to get your slips in to book yourself a time.

Reports

Next week reports will sent home to inform parents on your child’s progress. Thank you to all our teachers for their time in preparing the reports and of course, to our students for all of their reflections and work completed throughout this semester.

Renovations

Excitingly, a new holiday period will coincide with further renovation works in the lower Year 1-2 classroom area. Painting and the removal of the bag hooks will be on the agenda. The final aspect then will be the laying of carpet and the updating of pin boards.

Have a great weekend

Hello, my name is Bronwyn Upton and I am the Bayswater South Primary School Chaplain. I would like to outline for you the role a Chaplain plays within the school community. A Chaplain will-

Provide care and be a friend

Be a 'listening ear' for those who need someone to talk to

Provide pastoral care (encouragement and support)

Help a child sort through a problem or an issue

Run support groups (eg. Friendship programs)

Connect with parents as the need arises

Refer a child to other professionals

Support teachers in class, helping out as needed Matters of faith are only pursued when a person wishes to talk about them Life is not always easy. But knowing that someone is there for you to talk to, to listen, to encourage and to walk alongside you can be very comforting and can help you through difficult situations. My chaplaincy role is about offering care and support to the whole school community. It's about working with students, parents and teachers to assist in meeting the need s that arise in our daily lives. Children today have to deal with some very 'grown up' issues such as family break-up, grief and addictions. Or they may be struggling to make friends or to fit in with their peers. These can be very traumatic for children and could affect their ability to cope with the stresses of daily life. As such it may be beneficial for your child to have someone who they can talk to. This would occur on a purely voluntary basis. If you would prefer that this interaction not happen for your child/ren, please contact the school. Please feel free to call me regarding anything I can help you with. I am available on Mondays and Tuesdays at the school betw een 9am – 2.30pm. Or leave a message anytime and I will call you back. From Our Wellbeing Captains

Hi! It’s the 2019 well-being captains, Cian and Mia.

This week we are going to talk about ways to improve your mental wellbeing.

Mental health is more than just a diagnosis, it’s your overall physiological well-being.

To keep your mindset positive here are some tips to improve your mental well-being.

1.) Make or buy a positive calendar, a positive calendar is a calendar that gives you positive thoughts at the start of the day. (By Cian)

2.) Open up to someone, by this we mean start a conversation with someone you trust about something that is bothering you. A simple conversation can take a lot off your mind and go a long way. And it’s always nice to have a new perspective on something. (By Cian and Mia)

3.) Set realistic goals for yourself, we all have probably set goals for ourselves but sometimes these goal don’t go to plan or you lose track of what goal you’re actually following, so try to set goals you will actually follow and find strategies to help you keep on track. (By Cian and Mia)

4.) Mindfulness, first we must ask ourselves, what is mindfulness and how can we achieve it? Mindfulness can help you reduce stress and it can make you feel better you can do this anytime anywhere. In order to achieve it we must take a break and breathe. We must achieve a state of mind that keeps us in our happy place. So kind of like meditating. (By Mia)

Don’t forget these tips we have given you, and to eat healthy foods like oranges.

Literacy News

Dear Parents/Carers,

I recently came across this article about ways parents/carers can support their children with developing positive reading habits. It draws on a reading process referred to in the article as the 3 Ps. I think you will find the article both informative and helpful when listening to your child read. It will also make sitting down with your child a special time where you share and enjoy all the wonders that reading books brings.

Tim Aris

Literacy Leader.

Reading Together

How does reading develop?

Reading is about constructing meaning from print. Successful readers use a range of information when reading, including their:

knowledge of how the English language is spoken (structure)

previous experience and understanding of the topic (meaning)

knowledge of the letters and sounds and how they are represented in print (visual information)

Rather than rely on one source of information such as sounding out words, they use their knowledge of language and what they are reading about as well as the print when reading.

Successful readers expect what they read to make sense and are encouraged to predict what is coming up. They correct themselves when something does not make sense.

Get to know the book

When settling down to read together spend time getting to know the book. First:

talk about the cover and the title

say the author and illustrator names

look for the pictures and discuss what the book might be about.

Reading to…, Reading with…, Reading by…

Share books in a variety of ways, reading to the child, reading with the child and reading done by the child.

Depending on the kind of book being read and its degree of difficulty you will need to decide whether it will be read to the child with the child or by the child.

Reading to the child shows how reading works-you are demonstrating what you do when you read and showing that reading is an enjoyable and desirable activity.

Reading with the child occurs when you join in together to share the book. This is very satisfying for the child who gains confidence and see themselves as the reader.

Reading by the child- listening to your child read the book by themselves.

The 3 Ps

When reading is by the child use the 3 Ps -Pause,Prompt, and Praise to help.

Pause is when the child is unsure or hesitates; wait for a few seconds. Allow time for the child to check the pictures and the words to work out the meaning for themselves.

Then give a Prompt. Prompts are suggestions or clues. Encourage the child to have a closer look. Look at the pictures for a clue. Ask questions or give a hint that will leave the child on to the right words. Try: What word might make sense? What would sound right? What letter/s does it start with? If the word makes sense, allow the child to continue reading. If the word doesn’t make sense, encourage the child to have another try then tell the child the word.

Praise or efforts. If the child is still unsure after a try, tell them the word so they don’t lose the meaning of the story. Be positive and encouraging so they will continue to try.

Be careful not to draw the Pause, Prompt and Praise process out so long as to take away from the enjoyment, meaning and understanding of the book.

Doing Deals – Is There A Better Alternative?

Hi Parents, it’s a tricky game you play when you start to do deals with your children to get them to cooperate. For a start, you will need to be prepared to keep raising the stakes with them as they work out that if they delay long enough, Mum or Dad will offer them enticements to win their favours. You will get what you negotiate. Keep doing deals with children often enough and they learn that they too will get what they negotiate.

Sometimes as parents we do this because we just want peace and quiet. This becomes hard work and is very draining. Sometimes it’s the children who do the negotiating. “You want me to go to bed at 8.00pm? Well, I’ll go to bed at 8 if I can have some ice-cream first” may be their deal. It takes a savvy parent to say, “Actually no, that’s not what’s going to happen.” Sometimes we become involved in child initiated deals before we’re even aware of what’s happening. Children can take advantage of busy or tired parents.

Doing deals with your children can be one strategy in your armoury to get cooperation. But it needs to be a strategy of last resort (to use when you’re having visitors over, or when you want a sleep-in on the weekend). It’s not the best first option to use when you want your children to behave well.

Here are 5 alternatives to ‘doing deals’ with your children:

1. Catch them doing the right thing. Make a fuss when your children behave as you want them to. Tell them with a smile on your face that you’re pleased so they understand that you’re happy with their behaviour. Children love to please and respond well to praise.

2. Reward them after you’ve received the behaviour you want. Don’t say, “If you behave well on our shopping trip I’ll buy you something.” This type of incentive has consequences and is tied up with the art of dealing. Instead, on occasion buy your child a small reward to show your appreciation after he or she has behaved well. The order of events makes all the difference!

3. Expect them to behave well. This is more about attitude than strategy. Your expectations are indicated to them by a firm tone of voice and by your demeanour. This will show them that you mean it and that you believe in them and their ability to behave.

4. Let consequences be your friend. Let your actions, or lack of action, do the talking. For example: If your children won ’t pack their toys away, put the toys that are left lying around in a ‘mystery box’ for a time. You may need to hold firm in the face of tantrums when you use this method! Bring them out again when they’ve earned them back by packing up their toys.

5. Focus on you, not them. Want them to go to bed on time? Then start reading their bedtime story at the agreed time whether they are there or not. Resist calls of “that’s not fair,” as not going to bed at the agreed time is not fair on you either! A bedtime routine makes a huge difference too because they soon pick up on the familiarity of habit.

Nothing works all the time, so you will need to have a number of different strategies at your disposal when you want cooperation from your children. Your children need to learn responsibility and that the decisions they make, will always have consequences.
