Welcome to the First edition of the Bulletin for the year! It always with a sense of optimism and enthusiasm that we begin another school year, and this is no different. We will continue to build upon changes we have made to the curriculum, encourage further the development of student voice and provide further opportunities for our staff to hone their skills by introducing our coaching program. This year we will have over 300 students, 66 new Prep students and have 13 classes. We welcome back our old families, and of course especially welcome our new families to our special bilingual school.
Our staff have continued to evolve to meet the needs of our program and we welcome the following teachers to BSPS in 2017: Mr Matt Campbell (Prep/ PE/Sport), Frau Lisa Gillson (Prep / German P-2), Mrs Lucy Derix (Sport /PE), Andreas Ladwig (Language Assistant), Herr Christian Morf (Year 3-4) and Mrs Andrea Dell'Orso (Year 3-4). We also welcome back all our continuing staff and wish them a successful year. In this edition and on our school web you can find all the information you need relating to our 2017 staff organisation and contact details.
Importantly, now is the time for Council Elections over the next few weeks, so we ask for your support and consideration in ensuring that we have an effective and productive 2017 School Council. Details can be found in this edition of the Bulletin.
We wish all the very best also to our student leaders for 2017 (details within) and all our students in living out the 7 Habits, ensuring our school values are constantly being reinforced and developed.
By now all families would have received my welcome letter for 2017, and as I mentioned in it, we as a school will continue to work on developing effective communication channels. Shortly, the 2017 BSPS booklet will be available for all parents, which will give you all the latest information about the processes and procedures of the school. It will also be found on our school website.
I was lucky enough to travel back to Sweden over the break, the long flight, shortened days and temperatures ranging from 5 to minus 15 gave me plenty of time to think and reflect. I had the opportunity to speak to friends, teachers, and other Principals and I found myself constantly comparing. Intercultural awareness hit me between the eyes. I was immersed in languages and I loved it. I left feeling proud in knowing Bayswater South has a world class approach and curriculum program, that provides unique opportunities for our students which should not be under estimated. The challenge for our BSPS staff is to continue to implement it as effectively as we can, and the challenge for our parents is to positively support and join in partnership the educational journey of your child.
All the best for a successful 2017!

Hello, my name is Bronwyn Upton and I am the Bayswater South Primary School Chaplain. I would like to outline for you the role a Chaplain plays within the school community. A Chaplain will-
Provide care and be a friend
Be a 'listening ear' for those who need someone to talk to
Provide pastoral care (encouragement and support)
Help a child sort through a problem or an issue
Run support groups (eg. Friendship programs)
Connect with parents as the need arises
Refer a child to other professionals
Support teachers in class, helping out as needed Matters of faith are only pursued when a person wishes to talk about them Life is not always easy. But knowing that someone is there for you to talk to, to listen, to encourage and to walk alongside you can be very comforting and can help you through difficult situations. My chaplaincy role is about offering care and support to the whole school community. It's about working with students, parents and teachers to assist in meeting the needs that arise in our daily lives. Children today have to deal with some very 'grown up' issues such as family break-up, grief and addictions. Or they may be struggling to make friends or to fit in with their peers. These can be very traumatic for children and could affect their ability to cope with the stresses of daily life. As such it may be beneficial for your child to have someone who they can talk to. This would occur on a purely voluntary basis. If you would prefer that this interaction not happen for your child/ren, please contact the school. Please feel free to call me regarding anything I can help you with. I am available on Mondays and Tuesdays at the school betw een 9am – 2.30pm. Or leave a message anytime and I will call you back. Regards Bronwyn Upton SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

Sick Bay Roster
Its that time of year again when we need to ask for parents who would be willing to volunteer to
change the sheets in the sick bay on a roster system.
All that is required is to change the sheets, take them home to wash and return them to school.
We usually change the sheets on a Friday
The more parents who volunteer, means that you would probably only need to wash the sheets
once or twice a term.
If you are able to help out, please either email myself (Sandy)
at [email protected]. Or drop a note into the office.
Thank you in anticipation.

From Our School Council President
Happy 2017!
A late, but still well meant best wishes for 2017. At the time of this writing our children have already started school and are
already well on their way in getting settled in and sort out their school routines. Although school is of course still very new to all
our current prep students and prep parents. There are so many new developments in their life and so many changes, it will take
a little bit longer to get settled in. But as all other students and parents can vouch for, that will eventually happen too.
Parents who were already at Bayswater South know that at the start of the year that there are many, many, many (and many
more) things that need to be sorted out. Often it is too much to take it all in, there are just too many tasks to do and subse-
quently some things either miss out or don’t deserve the attention they should get. It is exactly for that reason that I am writing
this column as it is of interest to you all to be aware of the upcoming council elections.
As Bayswater South is a public school, parents have an active say in the running of the school through the school council. The
school council is made up by the principal, a staff member, a DEECD member, parents at the school and, if council wishes, a
community member. In all cases, at all the voting, parents at the school should be the majority at the council and therefore
parents have a very strong say in many matters affecting the school.
Each year, half of the council positions taken up by school parents are up for election. Soon there will be the election for 3 new
parents council members. Anyone with a child enrolled at Bayswater South is allowed to stand for school council. No experi-
ence is required and the only real requirement for joining school council as I see it is that you have the best interest at heart for
the school and you would like to participate in making informed (and sometimes difficult) decisions on how our school is run.
I joined council when my daughter started in prep. As an absolute novice to the school system in Australia, I have learned a lot
about what it means to run a school and to run it successfully. I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the school council and I
can happily and truthfully recommend it to everyone to give it a go and participate in the school council. The election process
starts on Monday, February 6, this is your chance to put up your hand and be part of a great team trying to give our children
the best education they can get. Make yourself available and join the council!
Good luck everyone and all the best wishes for 2017!
Frank Drost

Appendix A: School Council Elections – Information for Parents
School Council Elections 2017
What is a school council and what does it do?
All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally formed bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within centrally provided guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.
Who is on the school council?
There are three possible categories of membership:
A mandated elected Parent category. More than one third of the total members must be from this category. Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) employees can be Parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not employed at the school.
A mandated elected DEECD employee category. Members of this category may make up no more than one third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automati-cally one of these members.
An optional Community member category. Its members are appointed by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experiences. DEECD employees are not eligible to be Community members.
The term of office for all members is two years. Half the members must retire each year, creating vacan-cies for the annual school council elections.
Why is Parent membership so important?
Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school.
Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging.
How can you become involved?
The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are only held if more people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant.
In view of this, you might seriously consider
standing for election as a member of the school council
encouraging another person to stand for election.
Do I need special experience to be on school council?
No. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with oth-ers to help shape the school’s future.

What do you need to do to stand for election?
The principal will issue a notice and call for nominations following the commencement of Term 1 each year. All school council elections must be completed by the end of March.
If you decide to stand for election, you can arrange for someone to nominate you as a candidate or you can nom-inate yourself in the Parent category.
DEECD employees whose child is enrolled in a school in which they are not employed are eligible to nominate as parents for the school council where their child is enrolled
Once the nomination form is completed, return it to the principal within the time stated on the notice of elec-tion. You will receive a Nomination Form Receipt in the mail following the receipt of your completed nomination.
If there are more nominations received than there are vacancies on council, a ballot will be conducted during the two weeks after the call for nominations has closed.
Remember
Ask at the school for help if you would like to stand for election and are not sure what to do
Consider standing for election to council this year
Be sure to vote in the elections.
Contact the principal for further information.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE INFORMATION FOR PARENTS Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government’s commitment to breaking the link.

If you hold a valid means tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.
