Dear Parents Staff and Students
Parent Opinion Survey
It is that time of the year again when the staff students and parents complete surveys and the results are instrumental in making further improvements to our great school All families should have re-ceived this week a reminder through your email inviting you to complete the survey If you have not already done so please tell us what you think and as we would love to know We would love to hear what you are grateful for and happy about the school and what needs improving
Importantly the results are read and considered by the school and our parent satisfaction levels are compared to other schools This comparison aspect is not well known by our community but prospec-tive parents refer to it so this is an important consideration when filling out your survey Recently our response rate was at 40 families which we would like to see improve Therefore for the other 200 odd families out there I encourage you to take the time to complete the survey as your voice matters
Dadrsquos Night
One of the best nights of the year is happening soon so for all our fantastic Year 1 and 2 dads book in August 16th Get ready for some quality time with your child through a variety of activities and pizza The positive vibe and the appreciation on the faces of the children is wonderful to see All most wel-come

From Our School Chaplain
Unique Beauty Within
Hi Parents children are inclined to use characteristics to describe their attributes which arenrsquot always affirming The danger with this is that it may cause them to hold onto this description and allow it to shape who they become (ldquoIrsquom the smart dumb fat cute funny favoured sporty the ADHD child in the familyrdquo) Of course children are the sum of many parts but their view of the world is prejudiced when young They are often good observers but are not always good at correctly interpreting what others say So when they are told by others that they are smart dumb fat etc or just reminded through the way that we treat them (by giving responsibility to responsible children and withholding it from children who struggle with it) they start to form their I belongrsquo statement That is I belong in my family because I am the smart child the problem child or the helpful child
A childrsquos view of who they are will be developed by the time they reach adolescence Pre-adolescence is a time when children are trying to work out who they are and how they belong to the various groups they are a part of And of course their family is the first group they belong to So their place in their family impacts on how they belong in other groups in a big way Thatrsquos why their birth order and family group is so powerful in shaping who they become The trick is not to let them stay focused on one attribute Yes a child may struggle at school compared to their siblings but heshe may also be tolerant generous sporty funny and a whole bunch of other characteristics Not focusing on one particular characteristic isnrsquot always easy but is necessary if they are to develop a healthy view of who they are
But how to get this notion across to children is one of the many challenges we have as parents Start this in your home by not labelling any of your children yourself Such as the funny one the smart one the ADHD kid or the family clown Then treat them uniquely because thatrsquos exactly what they are Focus on their strengths and weaknesses in a balanced way not making a big deal of any of their characteristics Many parents make the mistake of raising their children all the same This often doesnrsquot work because all children lsquotickrsquo differently and so require different strategies of parenting So instead treat them in a way that helps them to respond to you in a positive manner Play to their strengths and donrsquot focus on what they canrsquot do See them as whole people not as labels or as children playing particular roles This holds true for special needs children too See past the disorder and focus on the whole child and all of hisher abilities interests and quirks Treat them as you want them to be not as who they appear to be Want your children to be responsible Then give himher responsibility (for their toys packing their school lunch feeding the cat) and allow them to mess up and experience what not being responsible feels like Look ahead realistically at how you want your children to be (friendly smart studious well-mannered) and start to see them this way
If you have children who define themselves in one or two words then help them look past the surface to reveal the full splendour of their individual beauty and see what other unique gems lie beneath their single-minded way of thinking Help them to see the full potential they have within and grow into well-balanced individuals

Hello my name is Bronwyn Upton and I am the Bayswater South Primary School Chaplain I would like to outline for you the role a Chaplain plays within the school community A Chaplain will-
Provide care and be a friend
Be a listening ear for those who need someone to talk to
Provide pastoral care (encouragement and support)
Help a child sort through a problem or an issue
Run support groups (eg Friendship programs)
Connect with parents as the need arises
Refer a child to other professionals
Support teachers in class helping out as needed Matters of faith are only pursued when a person wishes to talk about them Life is not always easy But knowing that someone is there for you to talk to to listen to encourage and to walk alongside you can be very comforting and can help you through difficult situations My chaplaincy role is about offering care and support to the whole school community Its about working with students parents and teachers to assist in meeting the need s that arise in our daily lives Children today have to deal with some very grown up issues such as family break-up grief and addictions Or they may be struggling to make friends or to fit in with their peers These can be very traumatic for children and could affect their ability to cope with the stresses of daily life As such it may be beneficial for your child to have someone who they can talk to This would occur on a purely voluntary basis If you would prefer that this interaction not happen for your children please contact the school Please feel free to call me regarding anything I can help you with I am available on Mondays and Tuesdays at the school betw een 9am ndash 230pm Or leave a message anytime and I will call you back Regards Bronwyn Upton SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

Provide care and be a friend
Be a listening ear for those who need someone to talk to
Provide pastoral care (encouragement and support)
Help a child sort through a problem or an issue
Run support groups (eg Friendship programs)
