It's a great stress reliever that also allows you to get to know many of your neighbors, get an understanding of who lives where, and feel more at home in your surroundings. Smile: It's simple enough, but if you're not in the habit of smiling and giving a friendly hello to the people you encounter in your neighborhood, it's a good habit to start. While not everyone will return the friendliness immediately, it's a quick way to get to know people and build relationships, even if you've lived close for years and haven't really said much to one another. Talk To Your Elders: The more veteran members of the neighborhood often have the inside scoop on the neighborhood. You may be surprised at how much you can learn if you stop to take the time to talk to the sweet old lady at the end of the block. Host A Block Party: If you already know several of your neighbors in a superficially friendly way, you may want to get to know them better and meet the rest by throwing a block party. They're surprisingly fun and easy. Sidewalks in Bay Forest As people start enjoying the spring weather and start moving around a bit more – the issue of sidewalks comes again to our attention. Be a Good NeighborI recently read a good article by Elizabeth Scott, MS on how to be a good neighbor. Here is a short list of her suggestions.

Get Out More: Take a morning or evening walk.

Sidewalks in Bay ForestAs people start enjoying the spring weather and start moving around a bit more – the issue of sidewalks comes again to our attention. As you may have noticed, the Bay Forest Community Association has been making repairs to the sidewalks the Association is responsible for maintaining. Sidewalks in front (or to the side) of your property are the responsibility of the homeowners to maintain. The goal of ensuring maintenance of sidewalks in Bay Forest is focused on safety. As many people take walks in the community – many at dusk or in low light conditions – it is very important they can rely on the sidewalk beneath them being safe.

Ladybug Realtors’ Bay Forest Pets OF tHe MONtH

Our Pet of the Month is Sherri and Jay Watonabe's pet, Himi. He is a Maltese. Sherri and Jay are avid bicycle riders and enjoy riding around the neighborhood. They said all the residents they see are always so friendly and helpful.

It has been great having the 4 legged boys. We have enjoyed them so much for 16-17 years. The older pet of the two is ill at the present and will soon be going to Doggie Heaven. (He didn't feel well enough for a photo today and excused himself.) Himi is being very attentive to him.

Himi decided he wanted a little color in his life so he chose the setting with the beautiful true pink Hibiscus . Their favorite time has been walking in the park with Mom and Dad.

Under our CCRs requirement for homeowners to maintain theirproperty, the Association will from time to time issue a deedrestriction violation notice for a homeowner to repair his/her sidewalk so it is safe. While a sidewalk maintenance issue may be noticed through a normal inspection, the general practice is to respond to a complaint from a homeowner. When a homeowner points out a sidewalk needing repair, the Bay Forest Community Manager will perform an inspection, and if one or more of the conditions below exist, a deed violation will be issued.

1. Significant cracking exists - with cracks greater than one (1) inch. 2. A trip hazard exists where there is a change in vertical level

(from one section to the next) greater than one (1) inch 3. The surface is not stable. 4. And just FYI - repairs that use a top coat or surface patching

are not acceptable.

Mailbox Upgrades – 1 Down – 28 to Go!The first mailbox location in Bay Forest has been upgraded with new boxes and a new pad. There are 29 mailbox locations in

Bay Forest. The upgrade program is a multi-year program based largely on funding availability. We have budgeted to replace six (6) locations this year. If you would like to see the list of when we are targeting specific mailbox locations – visit the Bay Forest Web Site. There is a quick link on the first page. The priority is set based on the condition of the box unit and the concrete pad on which it sits.

Many of the problems with mailbox locations in Bay Forest are due to the concrete pad sinking, cracking, holding water and accumulating dirt/mud. The new pads are larger and have a small curb on the back side so water and mud will be deflected away from the mailbox area.

Putting Your Trash Out for PickupWhen Bay Forest was initially developed (1980s), the City of Houston could not provide trash service to residents across the City. Bay Forest chose to have contractor service and to have twice-a-week back-door trash pick-up. Many homes in our neighborhood could get by with once-a-week pick-up (just one or two persons in the home, for example). But just as many need twice weekly pick-up based on the amount of waste their families generate. So we continue the twice weekly service.

The biggest benefit of back-door pick-up is the positive impact it has on our property values. Many new Bay Forest homeowners comment on how much more attractive they found Bay Forest to be - versus surrounding neighborhoods with curbside pick-up - when they were home shopping.

Over the years the question has come up many times about why Bay Forest does not just opt for City service and save money. The question is brought up and addressed in our annual meetings in October. Based on the feedback of the residents present, the

Neighborhood News

(BFCA continued on page 4)

Page 4: Bay Forest News, May 2013

May 2013 4

Neighborhood Newsoverwhelming feedback received is that Bay Forest residents want to maintain the type of service that historically has been provided – twice-a-week pick-up at the back door.

As you can see – we are paying for the convenience of back door trash pickup but also for the positive aesthetic result of not having trash at the street. That being said, there are exceptions to the back door pick up rule. It is helpful to think of waste as falling into two big categories in order to remember the exceptions.

Both recycling and residential waste will be picked up at the back-door location. Please do not place it at the curb. As a general rule – you should not take a trash or recycling container to the curb. All of the items that require curb pick-up should be prepared in such a way they are removed completely without having to have a container placed or left at the curb.

Green (Yard) Waste and heavy trash is picked up at the curb. Items requiring placement at the curb should be out by 7:00 am on collection days. Do not put items at the curb more than 12 hours before the start of trash pickup (i.e., the previous evening). This includes green (yard) wastes - limbs, bags of grass/leaves. You are responsible for advising your lawn company that it cannot leave bags at the curb unless it is the evening before trash pick-up.

Exercise Trail UpdateThe exercise trail equipment is in place. We are still planning to install a path to connect the stations and provide a nice walking surface around the Bay Forest Park. In addition, there will be instructions placed at each station to give you information on how to use the various stations.

Bay Forest Yard of the MonthAnyone driving around Bay Forest this month can see that the Yard of the Month Committee had a difficult challenge to select only two winning yards. We have so many beautiful, well maintained yards in our neighborhood! However, we did feel there were two that really stood out this month. Congratulations to:

Janardhana and Bharthala Vinta's home at 2314 Sycamore Grove on the South side of Bay Forest is a wonderful example of how hardscaping contributes to a spectacular yard design, and shows just how much can be accomplished with a sloping yard. These beds, retained by dry-fit stone walls, add drama and definition to the Vinta's wide yard. Knock out roses and pink and white Impatiens flank the front walkway focusing attention on their elegant front entry. Even the Vinta's driveway gets a lift with a simple stone and concrete pattern, as it calls attention to the gorgeous flowers behind the house. But back up front, cheerful red Begonias encircle towering Magnolia trees, and also provide pops of color amongst the shrubs in front of the house. At the other end of the yard, blue and white Plumbago anchor a large retained bed full of flowers and lush greenery.

Page 8: Bay Forest News, May 2013

May 2013 8

Bay Forest Yard of the MonthOur winners this month from the North side of Bay Forest are Robert and Wendy Strack at 1906 Park Lodge. Their shady corner lot is awash in cheerful color this month. They have flowers literally surrounding their home. The first thing we noticed was the large bed of pink Snapdragons and Azaleas in the front yard, and the dramatically raised urn overflowing with pink Petunias.

Or maybe your eye might be caught by the Yellow Bells and Blue Plumbago that dress up their long fence wall along the street (we can hardly wait for their Crape Myrtles to bloom!). But whatever first draws your attention to the Strack's lovely yard, don't miss the amazing Azalea topiary trees standing sentry at the front door, or the profusion of pink and purple Petunias that brighten up their driveway.

Please help us! If you see a yard that you feel deserves to be recognized as a Yard of the Month, please send us an email at [email protected] with the address of your nomination. We really appreciate all your suggestions. Also, we are about to start actively recruiting for new Yard of the Month committee members. If you appreciate beautiful yards and think you might enjoy meeting some new neighbors, please consider joining our committee. Send your contact information [email protected].

Blue Marlins are “In the Water!”Swim team has officially started! Congratulations to our new swimmers who have had two weeks to practice and are now official Blue Marlins! All swimmers, both returning members and new, are busy practicing at both pools, after school each day. All are very excited to see each other, as well as meet new friends.

We would like to thank our Blue Marlin parents and teens, who took time from their schedules to help with our “new swimmers” training during the last week of April, as they filled in for our coaches who were wrapping up their college exams. A huge welcome to our new coaches this season, and also to our dedicated returning coaches from previous years!

We will continue with our traditional practice times after school: ages 8 and under will practice from 4:30-5:30; while ages 9-10 will practice from 5:30-6:30. Please note that there will be NO practice on the last day of school, June 6th. Beginning on Monday, June 10th, all practices will shift to a morning schedule during June.

Time Trials are approaching soon! Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 18th. We will have our time trials, along with a mini-meet against the Nassau Bay Nauticats. This is when all swimmers have a chance to participate in a real meet situation, while also clocking swim times for their various swim strokes. These initial race times allow our coaches & staff to place our

Sample sizes will be available for proper fitting, as well as, swim caps, goggles, and more! It’s a fun day and an important kick-off day for our team. This mini-meet will be held at the Middlebrook pool. So, please make sure to attend, if possible.

Bay Forest Mommies’ ClubWelcome to all mothers in the neighborhood! If you have children between the ages of birth to approximately 12, the Mommies' Club might be for you. This group has been ongoing since 1986, and was started to give mothers a break occasionally from all of the responsibilities of being 'on call' all hours of the day and night.

Over the years, it has evolved to be more of a chance to learn from each other and to share experiences and activities with other mothers and their kids. Sometimes, it is just the mothers! Regardless, it has been a great part of Bay Forest for many years, and the mothers of the neighborhood would love to meet you!

Please contact Joy King, at [email protected] for additional information, and to get added to the distribution list. Lots of great information is shared via this distribution list, from which plumbers or house painters to use, to where to take kids to dinner.

Activities will be available this summer for kids and parents. Watch your email inbox.

Bay Forest Gourmet ClubOur last dinner party of the year was on April 27th where we celebrated the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. This was the first Olympics to be held in Latin America and the first to be held in a Spanish-speaking country. The Olympic Torch relay recreated the route taken by Christopher Columbus, travelling from Greece, Italy, and Spain, and then to El Salvador and finally to Mexico. At over 7,000 feet above sea level, the games presented challenges for the athletes especially in track and field. Our celebration was much less demanding; main courses were Tex-Mex Lasagna and Campechana de Mariscos with sides of Mango Cabbage Slaw and Avocado and Lettuce Salad. Starters included Tequila Shrimp and several salsas and dips. Two desserts were served: Chocolate Kahlua Cheese Cake and Flan. Liquid refreshments included Sangria and Margaritas. Pictures from the party will be in next month’s issue. Meanwhile, enjoy the following easy recipe.

Enchilada Dip(Make the day before)

16 oz cream cheese, softened1 10 oz can diced tomatoes with green chilies (Rotel)4 green onions, chopped1 bunch cilantro, trimmed, chopped1 1/2 Tbsp chili powder1 tsp minced garlic1 tsp cumin1 tsp dried oregano1 tsp paprikapinch of cayenne pepper (or pinch of red pepper flakes) to taste3 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cooked, chopped1 1/3 cups shredded Cheddar cheese.

Process the cream cheese, undrained tomatoes, green onions, cilantro, chili powder, garlic, cumin, oregano, paprika, cayenne pepper (or red flakes) in a food processor until mixed.

Spoon into a bowl. Stir in the chicken and Cheddar cheese. Serve with tortilla chips. The flavor is enhanced if the dip is prepared 1 day in advance and stored, covered, in the refrigerator.

NOW IS THE TIME TO GET STARTED ON YOUR CHILD’S COLLEGE PLANNING. CONTACT ME

BEFORE THE SCHOOL YEAR IS OVER.

Some Thoughts And Tips About College Planning This time of year, high school seniors have received their admissions decisions from colleges and universities. For each, the road to this point has been different since the college admissions process is a personal, individualized one. The seniors are proudly proclaiming their allegiances to their newly selected schools. Perhaps they have already placed a college decal on their car window. It is a happy time and they are relieved that the waiting game is over. With graduation and the end of the school year just around the corner, parents of eighth through eleventh grade students begin to wonder when is a good time to get started with college planning. Simply, the answer is now.

College admissions is a fluid, dynamic process with requirements and trends changing yearly. Even if families have already sent a child to college, there is a strong likelihood that things will have changed by the time the next child begins the college admissions process. There is no one resource to obtain all the information about the process or requirements. It takes time to research and to locate reliable and current resources. So, it makes sense to start early to learn what is actually needed and make a timeline or plan. There is much more to it all than it seems. Just like any project, it is best to have a well-defined plan with goals and deadlines as opposed to throwing something together at the last minute hoping for a successful outcome.

As an example of a significant recent change, independent college consultant Diane Overman of Overman College Consulting learned at the annual National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC) conference in Denver this past fall that the Common Application would be revising the application by changing the essay questions and the required length of the essays. Gone is the “topic of your choice” essay. Many of the counselors in attendance initially viewed this change negatively because the free choice essay topic was thought to be an opportunity for students to show their creativity and individuality. However, there will still be five essay topics to choose from and now, the applicants will all be writing about the same five topics. Overman said, “It does, in my opinion, then make it even more important for the applicants to produce quality essays that will stand out and get the admissions representative’s attention.”

If your child is not ready to think about college right now, have them think about these things. Grades beginning in freshman year do count and lay the foundation for the rest of your high school academic record. Summers are opportunities to do more than hang out by the pool or beach. Participation in extracurricular activities is a wonderful way to learn new things, make new friends, and develop leadership, time management and teamwork skills. When the time does come to start college applications, all of these will be important. Knowing that now is priceless.

CCiSD Board calls for School Bond ReferendumThe Clear Creek Independent School District Board of Trustees accepted the Citizens Facility Advisory Committee's recommendation to call for a $367 million bond referendum in order to address CCISD facilities, instructional technology, and co-curricular and extracurricular programs. During the February 25, 2013 general meeting, the school board unanimously voted to call a $367,000,000 bond election for May 11, 2013. Contents of the school bond package were prioritized by a 30-member facility committee consisting of parents, local citizens, business leaders and educators. Over the course of several months, the Citizens Facility Advisory Committee studied a district-wide facility assessment, enrollment projections, and district financial information as well as toured schools. The committee used this information and input from the public to finalize its recommendation. What's included in the Bond? The proposed bond will touch all CCISD schools and eight support facilities in some capacity. The proposed bond will:

What's the tax impact on property owners? The estimated tax increase of this bond is $0.1125. If approved by voters, a homeowner of a median home would see an initial $5.12 increase per month in property taxes with a maximum annual payment of $172.72. A median home in CCISD is $177,400. Homeowners 65 years and older would not see a tax rate increase as their property tax rates are frozen by law.
