Edrina Gets the Job Done... RIGHT!

“As a single man I needed help to update my house in a cost effective manner. Also, needless to say, it didn't show very well. I really appreciated Edrina taking the

bull by the horns and finding good contractors to do the job at a fair price.

I didn't have the time to supervise all the changes needed.

Thank goodness for Edrina. Edrina is the first realtor I have ever felt deserved her commission. Her hard work

found me a buyer who paid a fair price AND gave me the time to transition to my new house that was being built. Perfect!!

I MADE THE RIGHT DECISION... I HOPE YOUR FAMILY DOES ALSO.”

repair if necessary. Our goal is to insure that our sidewalks are safe for all pedestrians to traverse. We constantly ask folks why they walk or run in the streets vs the sidewalks and their response usually points to the condition of the sidewalks. Under our CCRs requirement for a homeowner to maintain their property, the Association will from time to time issue a deed restriction violation notice for a homeowner to repair their sidewalk so it is safe. While a sidewalk maintenance issue may be observed and noted by our BFCA Manager, we also receive complaints from members of our community who are walking on them and want to express their concerns. Once notified, the Bay Forest Community Manager will inspect and if one or more of the conditions below exist, a deed violation will be issued. 1. Significant cracking exists - with cracks greater than one

(1) inch. 2. A trip hazard exists where there is a change in vertical level

(from one section to the next) greater than one (1) inch 3. The surface is not stable. 4. And just FYI - repairs that use a top coat or surface patching

are not acceptable.

So just to recap – 1. The maintenance of the sidewalks is the Property Owner’s

responsibility – not the City of Houston and not the Community Association.

2. This is a real safety issue, and a real liability issue – just recently a homeowner tripped on an uneven sidewalk – fell and broke her hand.

3. Do your own sidewalk inspection and take action for the safety of others and before you receive a deed violation notice or worse an injury claim, or law suit.

4. If you notice a sidewalk that is in bad condition – please send a note to our community manager.

Be a Good Neighbor As summer is upon us and more folks are walking and spending time at the parks and pool – we have an opportunity to continue the legacy of Bay Forest being a great place to call home. I recently read a good article by Elizabeth Scott, MS on how to be a good neighbor. Here is a short list of her suggestions. • Get Out More: Take a morning or evening walk. It's a great

stress reliever that also allows you to get to know many of your neighbors, get an understanding of who lives where, and feel more at home in your surroundings.

• Smile: It's simple enough, but if you're not in the habit of smiling and giving a friendly hello to the people you encounter in your neighborhood, it's a good habit to start. While not everyone will return the friendliness immediately, it's a quick way to get to know people and build relationships, even if you've lived close for years and haven't really said much to one another.

Neighborhood News• Talk to Your Elders: The more veteran members of

the neighborhood often have the inside scoop on the neighborhood. You may be surprised at how much you can learn if you stop to take the time to talk to the sweet old lady at the end of the block.

Updates on Assessments I just want to give you an update on the payment of our Annual Assessments. There are still four (4) homes that have not paid their annual assessments. Of course –the other side of the coin – 832 homes paid their assessments. The Board has sent numerous emails – letters – certified letters to homeowners who do not pay. Of course that takes time away from other community priorities. In addition – personal visits by our community manager and board members were made or were attempted, to encourage homeowners to make their payments. Our by-laws require your board to collect all fees. We have now passed the point that our efforts alone will obtain the desired results. These files have now been turned over to the community attorneys for collection. So instead of paying just the assessments they will now be paying the attorney and all collections fees. Fourth of July We are planning another great July 4th at the park and pool. The activities will be similar to years past – bike parade and a community wide cook-out at the pool. You will be receiving an email with the specifics as we get closer. However – one teaser – we are catering barbeque this year! Construction Update For those of you who have visited the pool or the Bay Forest Pool Park – you have seen we are getting much closer to completing the addition to the pool pavilion. The storage facility is filling up and the Bay Forest Management office is coming together. Of course – we are waiting again for the city to perform the final inspection so they can give the go ahead to CenterPoint to connect the electricity. Once all is finished we will host an open house so everyone can visit and see the outcome of a multi-year effort. Fence Committee Update The fence committee continues to meet. We continue to have informational discussions with fence contractors. These have been very valuable as a team is now pulling together a Request for Proposals/Quotes (RFP/Q) to enable us to choose the builder of our fence. You may see some additional activity around the fence in the next few weeks as representatives from Coastal Testing will be boring holes to complete soil testing. Soil tests are required to enable the fence to be designed to stand up to our soil types and weather conditions. They will only be working on the outside of the fence.

Bay Forest Yard of the MonthDear Readers,This is one of those times when I wish I could declare every yard in Bay Forest as Yard of the Month! With all the recent rain we’ve had, just about every yard is looking lush, and green, and gorgeous. But never fear, the Yard of the Month committee was able to select two amazing yards that we felt were the best of the best. Both of these yards were nominated by neighbors, just like you, so if there is a yard that you feel should be showcased, please send the address to [email protected].

This month, our congratulations for a ‘Yard Well Done’ go to the Thomas family at 15118 Greenleaf and the Mejia family at 15503 Lake Lodge. Both yards are wonderful examples of how to use shrubbery and other greens to create interest and texture, The formal Lake Lodge yard is very elegant with it’s carefully sculpted shapes and crisp stonework. The yard on Greenleaf has a more relaxed feel. They have bird baths and bird houses sprinkled throughout their flower beds which provide a whimsical, colorful touch that I’m sure the birds just love too. Thank you both for all your hard work to create and maintain your beautiful landscapes.

If you know of a yard that you feel should be Yard of the Month, please let us know! Send an email with the address to [email protected] and we will gladly consider it. We are always looking to expand our committee, so if you appreciate a beautiful yard (and obviously you do because you’re reading this) please join our committee. Send an email with your name and contact info to [email protected].

Bay Forest Mommies’ ClubPlan to attend the 4th of July Bike Parade and show your spirit by decorating your bike. The Mommies’ Club will provide support for this event in the form of ice cold lemonade and snacks for after the parade for all those who attend. Also, if you are on our e-mail distribution list, look for details on the annual Pool Party and Ice Cream Social to be held in July. Again, if you are interested in more information about any event please join our e-mail distribution list by contacting Sandra Espinosa at the following e-mail: [email protected]. By joining the e-mail distribution list, you will be among the first to hear about every opportunity to do fun things that occur during the summer. Sometimes there are impromptu swim gatherings, movie events, or trips to Kemah and/or Galveston with the kids. You are welcome to join us for any event. Hope to see you this summer!

July 4th Annual Bike Parade and Pool Festivities The Fourth of July is just around the corner. The Bay Forest twenty–plus year tradition of celebrating this holiday continues in 2016. Come over for the early morning bike parade followed by a cookout and games in the pool!

Once again this year we will have prizes for the best decorated bike or trike. We will start at 8:30 am with the tire pump to insure all tires are ready to go. At 9:00 am the Little Kiddo Parade will start on the ½ mile route. At 9:20 am the Big Kid/Adult Parade will begin on the 1 ½ mile route. Come out and help celebrate our Nation’s Birthday.

The parades will be followed by fun, games, prizes and a cookout inside the pool pavilion.

Bay Forest Gourmet ClubOur last small party of the year celebrated the national dance of Argentina–the tango. The tango originated in the barrios of Buenos Aires and Montevideo during the late 1880s and soon became popular around the world. Today, you can walk down the main street of Buenos Aires and see couples dancing passionately to tango music. The main course naturally included Argentinean flank steak with a chimichurri sauce and accompanied by a Malbec. For starters we had empanadas de carne and onion bites with a white sangria. With the main course, rosemary and garlic new potatoes and roasted cherry tomatoes were served. To end the meal, we enjoyed dulce de leche dark chocolate brownies topped with vanilla ice cream. Here is the recipe for the onion bites

ONION BITESIngredients:• 1 medium onion, quartered lengthwise

and thinly slivered crosswise• 8 Tbs. mayonnaise• Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste• 8 thin slices white bread, crusts removed• 4 Tbs. freshly grated Parmesan cheese Directions:1. Preheat the oven to 3502. Mix the onion with 6 tablespoons of the mayonnaise and salt

and pepper to taste. Set aside3. Spread 4 slices of bread on one side with the remaining

mayonnaise. Cut these into quarters.4. Cut the remaining 4 slices of bread into quarters and spread

each square evenly with the onion mixture. Top with the reserved bread squares, mayonnaise side up. Place these on a lightly greased baking sheet and sprinkle the tops generously with Parmesan cheese.

5. Bake until lightly golden and slightly puffy, about 15 minutes. Makes 16 bites (You can buy the bread already for filling with the crusts removed)From CDKitchen.com

The first week was the mini meet held specifically for our swimmers 10 & under. The second was our first sanctioned meet of the season held right here at the Bay Forest Pool! They fought hard but were unable to secure a victory. Better luck next week Marlins!

Of the swimmers able to swim the past couple of meets, all had noteworthy races, from our first time swimmers, to our seasoned Blue Marlins, and some who even made their champ and reserve times this weekend. The swimmers’ cheering for their teammates was prominent throughout each meet. What a joy it is to see such positive team spirit and good sportsmanship! It was also exciting to see the generous parent participation, not to mention the many smiles as they watched their children swim. The success of Blue Marlins depends upon the participation of parents and families working various shifts like: timing, concessions, stroke and turn judging. This cooperation makes our team successful! Greetings from TLC!As the unofficial start to summer, Memorial Day is a great rea-son to get outdoors. Whether you BBQ, have a pool party or just soak up some rays, it’s important to keep your pet’s safety in mind at all times. To prevent any summer mishaps, we’ve put together some tips to help protect your best friend..• Pet ID tags are a must! • Is your pet's microchip registered? • Make sure to provide ample shade • Provide plenty of clean water• Skip the sprays - sunscreen & bug repellant can be toxic

to pets• Party smart - popular BBQ foods can be especially toxic to

pets: raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate, and avocado.

Animal Disaster Preparedness During the lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, many animals were displaced and many lives were lost as a result of people not evacuating because they did not want to leave their pets. Here are ways you can be better prepared in the event of an emergency:1. Ensure that your pet wears a collar with a rabies tag at all

times. 2. Consult your veterinarian about permanent identification,

such as microchipping.3. If your pet is microchipped, verify your contact information

is up-to-date in a national registry.4. Assemble a pet emergency kit with a leash, harness and 1

week supply of food.5. If you evacuate, take your pet with you. Have a safe place

to take your pet, such as a pet friendly hotel, pet kennel or veterinary facility.

Suspected Vehicle Burglary SuspectsConstable Phil Sandlin from Harris County Constable Precinct 8

For the past several months, the Clear Lake area has seen an increase in vehicle burglaries that have occurred as parents drop their children off at day care facilities. Often, parents have left valuables in their vehicles and have returned a short time later only to find they have become a victim of a burglary.

This happens in a matter of a minute or two. As a result of this, we have been conducting some surveillance of various locations in an attempt to catch the criminals responsible. This morning, Deputies were conducting this type of surveillance in the 15500 block of El Camino Real near St. Bernadette Catholic Church. The Deputies observed a black Lincoln sedan enter the parking lot, circle and then park between two unoccupied vehicles. We believe the occupants either spotted the Deputies or were otherwise spooked and they quickly fled the parking lot. The Deputies were able to follow the vehicle and it eventually pulled into the Food Town grocery store in the 500 block of El Dorado. There, the occupants were questioned and the driver was arrested on 2 open felony warrants for Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle and Evading Arrest as well as for lying to the Deputies about his identity (Fail to ID/Fugitive). He was ultimately identified as 29 year old Dushun Daniels of Houston. Both the driver and his female passenger have extensive criminal histories including arrests for burglaries, thefts and credit card crimes among other criminal activity. They do not reside in the Clear Lake area and Deputies found binoculars along with a loaded 9mm pistol magazine in the vehicle. We believe the pair may be responsible for several open cases in this region and the information is being shared with our law enforcement partners in hopes of linking them to other cases as well.

I would just like to remind you again to please be aware of your surroundings and do not leave valuables in your vehicles, even if you only step away for a short time. These types of predators strike very quickly and have proven to be difficult to apprehend. If you have any information that may help in this case, please contact us and share it with us.

School Supply Drive! Now through the end of the school year, the CLHS School Supply Club will be collecting used school supplies to help students in need. Many students in our district and around the country can’t buy the basic school supplies they need, but you can help some of these students and their teachers by donating used supplies that you will no longer need next year.

Donations can be dropped off in collection boxes near the front office and around the school, and they will be given to students in other CCISD schools and teachers working for Teach for

America. All donated supplies, from pencils to notebooks, help relieve a huge burden for these students and teachers, so thank you for donating supplies to make a difference in a student’s life!
