OBJECTIVES

At the end of this courseparticipants should be able to demonstrate:

How to assess the collapsed victim. How to perform chest compression and

rescue breathing. How to place an unconscious breathing

victim in the recovery position.

BACKGROUND

Approximately 700,000 cardiac arrests per year in Europe

Survival to hospital discharge presently approximately 5-10%

Bystander CPR vital intervention before arrival of emergency services

Early resuscitation and prompt defibrillation (within 1-2 minutes) can result in >60% survival

Shake shoulders gently

Ask “Are you all right?”

If he responds

• Leave as you find him.

• Find out what is wrong.

• Reassess regularly.

CHECK BREATHING

Look, listen and feel for NORMAL breathing

Do not confuse agonal breathing with NORMAL breathing

Page 12: Basic Life Support Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

AGONAL BREATHING

Occurs shortly after the heart stops in up to 40% of cardiac arrests

Described as barely, heavy, noisy or gasping breathing

Recognise as a sign of cardiac arrest

ChokingCauses for a Blocked Airway (Choking) #1 reason: Tongue#2 reason: Elevated Blood Alcohol#3 reason: Dentures#4 reason: Poorly Chewed Food

If someone is coughing, leave the person alone. Do not perform the Heimlich maneuver on them until you are positive they are choking. Ask the person if they can talk. A really easy and obvious way you can tell someone is choking is when they have their two hands wrapped around their neck.

Heimlich ManeuverTo perform the Heimlich maneuver you must put

your two hands together while you are wrapped around the choking victim. Put your hands about where the persons belly button is, and then thrust up with your hands.
