^ young Khamoo g i r l who g i veso encouragement i n h i s C h r i s t i a n l i f e

Morning services were a time of great rejoicing and the sicall groupenthusiastically t r ied to learn the nelddy as well as the words ofsome familiar hymns. After services, I went up to the headman s home.He i s also a former p ro fe ss ing P r shyterian, having received threeyears o f e du catio n in the mission schools. He renounced h is f a i thin order to maintain his position, and his. grown son, who was one of mytravelling companions, is one of the most ardent antagonists of thegospel in the vi l lage . I spoke to the headman a few m in ut es abouttaking a stand fo r Chris t again.emphasizing th at e te rn al values fa r^tweigi any rank or position available in this l ife. As I taught inihai , the headman s son argued and bel i t t led my teaching in Khamoo.Neverthe less , in the course of this message, Gaao, another fine youngman, took a public stand fo r Chris t in the face of r id icule from h isfriends. I then accompanied Gaao to his home where he assembled his

s i s t e r s and we again went through an ins t ruct ion period. At the close, Gaao and his wife and his older brother, Ngern, requestedto be bapt ised, so we s tar ted fo r the r iver bank. Three others who hadpreviously professed fa i th in Christ were baptised at the same time.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was the demolishing of the sp i r i tshelves. Every Khamoo home has a shelf where offerings to th e demons aplaced in the hope of appe^ing them and preventing misfortune. Int ea ch in g th es e t ri be sp eo pl e^ we have t r i ed to emphasize t ha t a cleanbreak must be made and a l l elements of demon-worship must be abandonedbefore an individual can come in to Chris t . Thus, the destruction ofthe demon-shelves becomes an important means of testifying before th ev illage th at the darkness of Satan has been abandoned for the l ight ofJesus Christ . e gathered the dried flowers, leaves, bi ts of paper andcloth which had const i tu ted the offer ings to the demons and one of theyoung men threw them into the r iver. Then we had a season of prayerin the homes of the new bel ievers whe>-e they a l l committed t h e i r l ivesto the almighty hand of Chr i s t . In the afternoon we had another service

for believers in which they partook for the f i r s t time of the Lord ssupper. I t is hard for those of us who have had Christian teachinga ll our l ives to fathom the complete ignorance of these tribespeopleconcerning a l l things Christian, Such things as reverence and quietness during services must be taught pat ient ly, step by step. To th enew missionary, especially, i t is a tr ibulation to conduct a baptismalseryice when the crowd on th e bank hoots and laughS with each baptism.I t is a strain on the spir i t to conduct a communion service amid giggl ing an d whispering o f o nl oo ke rs . I t i s d if f i c ul t to teach a Biblelesson to a group of h i l l t r ibes - fo lk who have never before had to s i tquie:t3y and s t i l l for as long as twenty minutes. Yet we do praise Godfo r the sustaining grace tha t He gives a t such t imes. Persecution inNam Mong i s very seve re and the young people who were baptised thatday spent a sleepless night as t he ir r el at iv es descended upon them, bera t ing them and at tempting to force them to renounce the Chr i s twhom they had Just accepted. Gaao came to me the next morning, Theydid not l e t me sleep at a l l l a s t night, he said, But I am going tostand firm for Christ , Otfeers in the village seem on the verge ofaccept ing . Ban i s a cr iminal who has taken refuge i n t h i s v i l l a g e . Aconvicted murderer, t h i e f and opium addic t , he says, I f God can s t i l lforgive me and deliver me from the opium habit I am ready to give myl i f e to Him, All my l i f e I have t rus ted myself and now I have nopeace. A teenage g i r l asked to be b ap tis ed b ut showed i n s u f f i c i e n tknowledge when questioned. She i s a younger s i s t e r of Ngem and Gaaoso I ins t ructed them to teach her more fu l ly of the way of salvat ionso that she might be baptised as ?oon she has adequate understanding.Dawn, mother young man, sa id , Teacher, I think tha t maybe I would
