Discover Local Cemeteries at Brook-side’s Very Grave Indeed ProgramBALLSTON SPA - Brookside, home of the Saratoga County Historical Society, invites you to learn about local historic cemeteries at Very Grave Indeed on Sunday, October 27 from 2-4 pm. This workshop will introduce participants to the many facets of historic cemeteries and the stories and resources they offer. Presenters will share information on causes of death, fu-neral and burial customs of the 19th century, gravestone clean-ing methods and materials, and using information gleaned from cemeteries to research family trees and local history. A variety of relevant materials and historic objects will be available for viewing. Participants will travel to a nearby cemetery for the latter part of the class to see a gravestone cleaning demonstra-tion and take a tour of interesting and unusual memorials. The cost of this program is $15 per person ($10 for SCHS mem-bers). Pre-registration is requested by October 24 for this popu-lar class. Please contact Anne Clothier at 885-4000 or [email protected] for more information or to register.

Five Tips for Haunting Your House this Halloween(StatePoint) Americans spent close to $8 billion on Halloween last year, according to the Na-tional Retail Federation. With scary celebrations getting bigger every year, becoming the best-decorated house on the block may seem diffi cult -- but it’s easy if you have insider tips and tricks.
“Giving your home a spooky look for Halloween can make or break your trick-or-treaters’ night,” says Larry Kirchner, publisher of Hauntworld.com and owner and operator of the world’s number-one rated haunted house, “The Darkness”.
Kirchner, who has been building and operating Halloween amusement attractions for 25 years, has some tips for turning your home into a spooky haunted house:
• Create a cemetery: “Haunting” your yard sets the tone for your whole haunted house. One of the easiest, most fun, yet eeriest things you can do is turn the space into a graveyard. Let your grass grow long, add a gothic fence and a zombie or two popping up through the ground and make
your own tombstone or coffi n to complete the look.
Start by getting pink or blue foam from the hardware store. Cut the foam into the shape of a tombstone and then coat it with light plaster, thin con-crete or other textured materi-al found at the hardware or art supply store. Finally, paint it gray, and use a hotwire knife to carve in RIP and a name.
To make a coffi n, use 1x6 pine boards and 2x2s nailed together into a box. Paint the outside and then get creative with your theme. For a Victo-rian vampire style coffi n, line the interior with velvet cur-tains. For a deserted Old West theme, use jute or burlap on the inside.
• Spin cobwebs: Achieve that old, abandoned, dusty look inside, or create creepiness outside, by spinning your
own cobwebs. Most haunted house supply websites sell cobweb glue guns that use air to spray thin strands of glue. You can create any size cobweb over fake birds, china cabinets or even trees.
• Creepify your windows: Add a red light to the bottom of the windows, and hang torn black curtains to make the windows look creepy when they`re lit. Hang boards across the outside to give the house an abandoned look.
• Add eerie effects: Play spooky sounds on a ste-reo outside or through open windows. You can fi nd great Halloween soundtracks online. For a dramatic effect, use a fog machine to make the house look otherworldly. You can rent or pur-chase fog machines at most party stores.
• Break out some black birds: Dollar stores of-ten sell black birds, which you can make fright-ening by gluing scraps of gray fabric to their feathers and buttons over their eyes. Hang them in the yard or throughout the house with black gauze or spider webs from the party store.
This Halloween, get spookily creative. Go beyond a simple Jack-O-Lantern and haunt your whole house.

Celebrating Halloween and Fall Affordably(StatePoint) With the beginning of autumn comes time to deco-rate your home for Halloween and harvest, stock the pantry with heartier foods and spruce up your wardrobe with seasonal fashions.
Transitioning into fall can be easy by staying on a budget and the shopping experts at Dollar General are sharing ways to cel-ebrate fall affordably:
• Make a picnic: There’s no better way to celebrate the season than with a picnic at a local park as the leaves change colors, complete with hazelnut cocoa spread and jelly sandwiches,
turkey wraps and fresh fall ap-ples. Be sure to pack plenty of reusable plates and silverware available in rustic fall colors too. It’s an affordable way for the whole family to enjoy the weekend outdoors.
• Halloween: Welcome trick-or-treaters with festive yard signs and decorations. Save on all your Halloween cel-ebrations by stocking up on candy, chocolates, treats and more from national and private brands. Throw a festive and low-cost Halloween party with
simple costumes and spooky décor by fi nding your supplies at a discount store such as Dollar General. Great free party recipe ideas for dips and snack mixes can also be found online.
• Highlight your home: Be inspired by the spectacular natural colors of the season and accent your home with the latest fall trends and harvest décor items. Greet your guests with hospi-tality with a fall wreath and accent your kitchen with new owl-themed housewares. Plus, as the temperatures drop, make your home cozier with throw blankets and area rugs. Candles in seasonal scents are another great fall addition.
• Get dressed: Enjoying the season means you’ll need new items in your wardrobe to stay comfortable, warm and fashion-able. Don’t spend a fortune ramping up your family’s wardrobe with sweaters, knit shirts, jeggings and skinny jeans. A discount retailer will have all the same styles for less, including outer-
wear and shape wear designed for cooler weather, so you can stay active all season.
• Eat well: Warm up the family with hearty meals made from inexpensive ingredients. Name brands can be pricey, so opt for private store brands such as Clover Valley Soup. For main dish-es, think about hot entrees that can feed the whole family easily.

BrodyBrody is a playful, funny and sweet boy. He’s friendly to dogs and people, big &
small although we don’t know how he’d do with feline housemates. Brody is a 4 year old neutered Cocker Spaniel who’s up to
date on vaccinations. He may prefer a home with older kids as he can be a little chatty/anxious, at first, in new situations. He will
also be looking for a companion who can be home with him, take him along, or send him to a doggy daycare as he reportedly suffers
from separation anxiety and does not do well left alone.

Sabrina is a 9-year old Shepherd/Hound mixed beauty! She’s spayed and up to date on shots. She’s very low key and gentle.
Sabrina would be great either as an only pet or with another dog, but she does not
get along with cats. Sabrina would be a free adoption to a qualified senior citizen in our
senior to senior program.

Ben and Cody are adorable 3-4 month old kittens who were formerly stray babies. They are now safe, warm and used to indoor life!
They are looking for their forever homes and since they’re sibling best friends, we’d love

Benefit Concert For Keepmasonmoving.Org CAPITAL DISTRICT - Performers, businesses, and volunteers from across the region have banded together to host a benefit concert for Keep Mason Moving, a new local organization dedicated to helping children with terminal illness, at the Put-nam Den in Saratoga Springs on Sunday October 13th, 2013 from 1:00pm – 7:00pm. Less than three months ago, Keep Ma-son Moving was nothing more than a vision to support Ma-son Devine, a local six year old boy diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. In less than two weeks, the Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs will be hosting the first of many fundraisers to support the organization’s mission to help children with ter-minal illness and their families focus on the quality of time they have together. Leading the charge are several local performers, businesses, and a team of dedicated supporters. The event will feature local musicians, food from many area restaurants, and a day filled with indoor and outdoor activities for children of all ages. The $25 admission to the event includes a Keep Ma-son Moving wristband, delicious food, 6+ hours of music, and activities for children. Children under 13 enter free with paid adult admission. Community Emergency Corps & Toys for TotsBALLSTON SPA - During this upcoming holiday season Com-munity Emergency Corps of Ballston Spa will again be an of-ficial drop off point for donations for the Toys for Tots program sponsored by the United States Marine Corps. This campaign has reached out and assisted needy and deserving children all around the capital region for over 45 years. Without this won-derful program, children in our communities would not have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays the way they deserve. With these trying times and the recession still looming over this holiday season, we are in an even bigger need of support from our Capital Region community. We have already started to re-ceive donations and will be accepting toys at our station at 78 Thompson St., Ballston Spa, NY until December 15th. You can drop them off anytime, days or evenings. If we are not at the building due to answering emergency calls, we hope you will return at another time with your contribution. As a reminder, toys collected in this area are redistributed right back into this area to those in need. For further information or if you have any questions, feel free to contact Ray Otten, Executive Director of CEC, at 885-1478.

Since this is the time of year when it makes the most sense to apply lime to your lawn, I think a little reminder is in order. Why is this the best time? To cause the pH correction you’re looking for, lime takes at least 3 months. If you test your soil and apply lime in the spring, you won’t see any benefi t until the very end of the season. If you make your application now, the lime will have all winter to react with the soil and you’ll start out the growing season next year with nice, sweet soil.
During my years in garden retailing, I’ve noticed a reluctance among residential turf specialists (you who care for the lawn) to pay attention to soil pH. Many folks are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on lawn food and moss controls but will dig in their heels when asked to spend a couple of bucks on a simple soil pH test kit. Go fi gure. I guess it sounds too “compli-cated and scientifi c” or something. We’re not talking hours of research in a laboratory here, just a thimble full of soil, one test tube and some distilled water.
The benefi ts of properly adjusting the pH of the soil and the benefi ts of limestone itself are far reaching. I could carry on for pages about nutrients in the soil (or from the fertilizer you pay good money for) being “bound up” and unavailable to plants because of acidic soil. I could write reams on how the microorganisms that “feed” your lawn die off in soils with a low pH. I could rant and rave about how important calcium and magnesium (from limestone) are in forma-tion of plant fi ber or how osmosis (the ability of plant to draw moisture from the soil) is impeded in acidic soil. Let’s just say, its VERY important.
Here’s the deal. There’s a tendency for soil to gradually become acidic over time. Decomposing organic matter (grass clippings in the case of your lawn), fertilizer and acid rain all contribute to acidifi cation of the soil. In heavier soils like clay, this happens very slowly. In looser soils like sand, acidifi cation occurs more rapidly. The more fertilizer and organic matter you apply to your lawn or garden, the more often you should check the pH. Different plants prefer different pH levels. Most vegetables grow best in slightly acidic soil (pH 6.5 to 6.8) while your lawn will be healthier if the soil is neutral (pH 7).
Every once in a while I run into someone who’s heard that lime is good for the lawn and they’ll ask, “I’ve got an average size lawn and I’ve never limed it. How much lime should I apply?” To the uninformed, this seems like a reasonable question. To me, it’s like asking your mechanic, ”I have a mid-sized sedan. How much oil do I need to add?” There’s no way your mechanic could answer unless you allowed him/her to look at the dipstick. The inexpensive soil pH test kit is your “dipstick” to determine how much lime you need to apply for healthy plant growth. If I’m asked, “I have 10,000 sq. ft. of lawn and the pH is 6.0. How much lime should I apply?” I can then say that you need 10-40 lb. bags of pelletized lime to bring your soil’s pH up to the pH of 7.0 that it should have. Of course, you may not need to ask since the information is provided in the pH test kit. Unlike fertilizer applications, you won’t need to apply lime every year. Usually every 3 to 5 years, maybe even longer depending on the type of soil you have.
Another benefi t of checking and properly adjusting the pH of the soil in your lawn is the control of moss. I’m not telling you that lime applications will kill moss if it’s already established itself in your lawn but if you’d paid attention to the soil’s pH all along you probably wouldn’t have a moss problem to begin with. Moss won’t take hold and thrive unless the soil is acidic. Once it gets established, moss causes the soil in the area it’s growing to become acidic even faster; creating an environment that allows it to spread quickly. The net effect is that the moss kills off the grass by making the soil too acidic and then fi lls in the bare area that’s left. The whole situation can be avoided by checking and adjusting the soil’s pH regularly. Remember, too much lime will make the soil too alkaline for the grass to thrive so more isn’t better. The bottom line is this: you can spend a few bucks for a pH test kit and you’ll end up using less lawn food and have a healthier, more disease and drought resistant lawn while spending less. PH test kits are one of the best lawn care bargains going. Thanks for the read.

Pete Bardunias, President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County
Tech Valley Jobs Are Available For Dedicated Workers
As the manufacturing and high tech resurgence con-tinues here in southern Saratoga County and neigh-boring areas, companies are seeking employees with a strong work ethic, technical skills or the willingness to train, and a desire to help our emerging companies be-come tomorrow’s industry leaders. Opportunities exist in manufacturing, agriculture, retail, finance, health care, and many other professions. Business owners and hiring managers sometimes have expressed their frustrations at the difficulty in finding qualified and/or dedicated workers out of the many applicants they receive. If you fit the above criteria, then now is the time to explore the possibilities. The Town of Malta is hosting a Career Expo & Job Fair, Thursday Oct 24 at the Malta Community Center from 12:30-4:30PM. The event will feature ex-hibitors who are looking to hire, plus several seminars, on-going events to critique resumes, stage mock interviews, discuss small business start-ups, and more. There will also be two speed networking events so attendees can polish their commu-nications skills and try out so-called “elevator speeches.” The Malta Career Expo & Job Fair is sponsored by the Town of Malta, The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County, the Ballston Journal, and Bryant & Stratton College, in partnership with the NYS Department of Labor Employment and Training. Job seekers should bring
their resume and wear business attire. For more informa-tion please call 518-899-4411. Unable to attend the Expo? Our Chamber’s membership includes staffing agencies who can help match candidates with available jobs, and the Chamber is always willing to accept a resume from someone and pass it along. Job seekers are welcome at our monthly networking mixers too, where you might just meet a future employer or find an available service that might help you obtain more skills or present yourself better as a candidate when opportunities arise. Call us at 518-371-7748 or visit www.southernsaratoga.org for more infor-mation.
