New Year's here, Christmas cheer is gone but not forgotTime to start afresh and give the New Year all you've gotEat less, drink less, don't get mad, don't do things that makes folk sadLearn a language, ride a bike, don’t forget the things you like.Exercise your mind and heart, introduce yourself to art.Learn to knit or take up whist, anyone can make a list. But then comes the troubled bit, when we strive to stick to it!Every year many people will make a list similar to the one on the front of this month's magazine. It's easy in hindsight to see things we have been doing wrong or badly and we like to start a new year with the intention of doing things better than perhaps we did them in the past. Alternatively we may decide to challenge our abilities by trying something new or different or learning a new skill. Unfortunately it is all too easy to make the list and fail to carry out any of the things on it, so it's tempting not to even try. But if you do decide to make a list don’t forget this one!.................

Cotton Community Circle Café and ClubMany of you enjoy coming to the Saturday Café held at Cotton Village Hall. Every six weeks or

so, it provides a warm, welcoming and delicious way to spend a Saturday morning.Behind the scenes, there is a small group of dedicated people – a small Committee of like-minded individuals, keeping a watchful eye on how the Saturday Cafés and Tuesday Clubs are run. (Did

you know we are a voluntary, non-profit-making organisation, and during 2015/16 we gave away £464.00 to local charities and good causes? - Not bad for a small group!)

We are now actively recruiting new Committee members to help us carry on and take us forward. So, if you would like to try us out and could commit to three evening meetings per year, and help

at the Café from time to time, we would love to hear from you. Please think about this and, if you would like to learn more, have a word with -

Dear Friends,Many of you will now be aware that Andy and Liz Mellen, who run the very successful Wyverstone Community Café, are reducing their Café dates to once a month.A group of villagers thought that this would be a sad loss

to the community and have decided to start a new café to be known as The Village Café. Generally this will be on the 1st

Saturday of the month: starting on the 4th March 2017. Like the Community Café, The Village Café will be open from 10.00am – 12.30 and will use the same format that Andy and Liz have followed for many years. The Village Café will be a non-profit making venture for our village, therefore, its primary purpose will be the raising funds for the Wyverstone Village Hall and The Friends of St. George’s and secondly to make a donation to at least one other organisation. All monies to be distributed annually. The committee for The Village Café is Steve and Jan Axton, Pam and Graham Desmond and Helen and Guy Whitelaw. If you feel you are able to help with this new venture, even if it’s only occasionally, please contact Helen or Guy on 781508.We look forward to welcoming you at The Village Café and please refer to the Parish Magazine for future dates. -The Village Cafe Committee

If you want a warm job on a bright day and collect compost, whether a heap or compost bins, give them a complete turning over. It will help to produce good quality compost for the coming season. If they look too dry in the centre give them a bucket of water, this helps the process.I've picked a dry day and I've just been over my lawn with a fork, to increase drainage. Depress your fork about three-quarters of the way into the lawn and just give a little rocking motion backwards and forwards as the fork comes out of the lawn. Whilst doing this job I'm always looking for any dips or depressions in the lawn and making up a mixture of horticultural sharp sand, peat and humus, mix it well in a wheel barrow and spread it around. Finishing off by sweeping the mixture into the lawn with a besom broom.Don't forget to have a look around your garden and see if any leaves have swirled into corners and pick up any twigs and debris that may have fallen down.If you've planted any new trees they will need support immediately. Also look at any other trees or standard roses which may also need staking. If you plant a new fruit tree put the stake into the ground before you fill in the hole. Random staking, knocked into the ground after the fruit tree has been planted, can cause quite a lot of damage to the root system. There is debate as to which is the better method for support stakes.  One method is an upright stake securing the fruit tree at the top and the second method is to drive a stake into the ground at 45 degrees, securing the fruit tree about one third up from the soil. If you use this second method make sure the stake is facing towards the direction of the prevailing winds. If you haven't already done it give your gardening tools the once over, keep them sharp and clean. I always give mine a slight spray of WD40 and a wipe over with a clean cloth.I had a walk around my garden the other day, when the weather wasn't too bad and noticed the tips of some of the bulbs  planted last September were showing their new growth so I raked some soil over their tops just to cover them up as the bad weather is yet to come along. Cold winds and frost could cause damage to these tender young tips.

With the noticeable increase in both the volume and speed of vehicles through Bacton, I feel that it is time that action was taken to slow down the speeders. The road through the village has become something of a “Rat Run” since the roundabouts were built at Tot Hill but it would appear that no action has been taken other than the somewhat ineffectual illuminating sign at the Scout Hut.Other villages around us such as Wyverstone, which suffer from far less traffic flow, have 30 signs painted in the road and have Community Speed Awareness groups using speed guns. I have contacted Mid Suffolk Council to point out the danger caused by the lack

of a footpath under the railway bridge at the top of Pound Hill and was informed that they were aware of this but “the cost of engineering work to straighten out the road is too high” I guess they are waiting for someone to be injured or killed before taking any action. I believe that a footpath could easily be provided by narrowing the road and installing traffic lights to control traffic flow, this might also help to reduce the number of vehicles through Bacton, help prevent the over-height vehicle strikes on the bridge and allow the removal of the unattractive low bridge “Graffiti”. I would be prepared to join a Community Speed Awareness group if one is formed in Bacton.

Save time and money when buying your heating oilIf you are one of over 46,000 households in Suffolk which is off the mains gas network, you could be saving money on your oil heating bill thanks to a local social enterprise.Community Action Suffolk (CAS) runs a community buying scheme which has purchased over 2.1 million litres of oil in the last year. In this time, households saved an average of £60, higher volume users such as community groups have saved £100 and rural businesses have saved £321.Despite recent record falls in oil prices, the scheme’s members have still made a collective saving of over £70,000 in the past year, as heating oil is purchased in bulk.Oil deliveries are then planned to provide an environmental benefit, with one oil tanker making a single trip to several members, rather than numerous single trips to the same area. Not only is the tanker’s fuel consumption reduced, but so is the heavy traffic through rural villages.Natalie Lomas, Resources Officer at CAS, said:“Our members simply like the low prices that we get for them. Since the scheme started, our prices have been consistently lower than the average prices our members would have paid independently.“Members also appreciate the ease of the scheme, as they do not have the hassle of phoning around suppliers for quotes.“We take orders from our members across Essex, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire and place bulk orders twice a month. We can also organise individual orders for members who miss a deadline, or find that they are running short.”Members are not required to place orders online in order to benefit from savings, as is often the way with similar schemes. This is one way in which the scheme prides itself with customer service. One regular customer recently commented:“Once again I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and your colleagues for organising and providing this service, which continues to offer significant savings on heating oil purchases as well as proving to be very efficient in its operation and delivery, thank you.”As well as heating oil, the scheme also supplies members with Fuel Additive, Red Diesel, Gas Oil and LPG. Membership starts from just £20 per year and members have the option of placing orders via the website, by email, post or telephone.

To become a member or for more information visit www.communitybuying.org.uk or call 01473 345355 for a membership pack to be sent to you.

Our Christmas meeting on December 5th was an unusual one in many respects. First of all it was to be a self-generated 'Christmas Party' with no speaker to do a talk. Also neither our outgoing president, Angela Cook, nor her successor, Barbara Evans were available to run the meeting. This being so it was time for vice presidents Rosy Black and myself (Amanda Manley) to step into the breach. However, our presidents had both done a lot of preparation so that Rosy and I could step in with the minimum of work.Angela had prepared a Quiz and a ‘Build a Snowman’ Craft Activity. She had made up packs for 7 teams so there was nothing to do but hand them round and give basic instructions.Rosy began the meeting with a little bit of ‘business’ and then went straight into a short cookery demonstration to make a Lime torte. The table bent a little while she was vigorously crushing the ginger biscuits for the base but everything went according to plan and people were soon asking for the recipe to try out themselves at home.

In true ‘Blue Peter’ fashion Rosy had made one earlier for us all to taste during refreshments, together with food that members had brought along to enjoy. The Quiz was given out before refreshments and marked afterwards and the winning table was that of Angela Jenner, Rose Graham, Angela Elmer and Norma Lambert. Then it was time to clear away in order to grapple with bin bags, newspaper, garden fleece and other bits and pieces in an attempt to fulfil Angela Cook’s ambition for a roomful of life-sized Snowmen. However, no-one managed to make one quite that large but great fun was had by all and everyone was invited to vote for the winner. Unfortunately the result was a tie between two tables but we had only one prize. As one of the winning tables had also won the Quiz, the craft prize was awarded to the other. This was Pat Hall, Pat Last, Nolly Curwen and Pearl Cardy. The meeting was rounded off with a rousing rendition of ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’ complete with picture cards, followed by a few well known Carols and we all left in a real Christmas Party mood.We are sorry that quite a few members missed out on the fun - unfortunately, it was a very cold and somewhat foggy night, but we hope they are all well and that we will see them in February at our first meeting of 2017.

2016 POPPY APPEALWell what a result, due to the generosity of the people in our three villages last year's total has already been exceeded!   So far we have collected £2825.68, this was raised from house to house collections, boxes at village businesses, coffee morning, bring

and buy, whist drive, church collections etc. Many, many thanks to all who helped the local branch of RBL to achieve this magnificent result - you all know who you are!

Wyverstone Carpet Bowls Club Needs You !!!Wyverstone Carpet Bowls Club held its AGM on 21st September 2016, which only nine members attended. The Chairlady, Julia Hurley, welcomed those present, and announced her resignation as Chairlady, and also from the club itself. A subsequent Extraordinary Meeting took place on 15th November 2016, which the remaining 8 members attended, when the viability

of the club was discussed. A majority vote of 7-1 decided that the club would continue to the end of 2016, and a further assessment will be made at the start of 2017. There is a need to attract more new members if the club is to continue. It would be a great pity if the club was to become un-viable, especially as we purchased a new mat in January 2015, at the request of members. We have weekly “roll-up” practice sessions, when members enjoy the game and the social atmosphere of the club, and, if we can get some new members, we would play Friendly Matches with other local Suffolk clubs during the winter months. We really do feel that this club is a very important part of village life, not just for Wyverstone, but for the surrounding villages as well. We currently have members from Wyverstone, Bacton, Gislingham and Finningham, and would welcome new members from these and other villages too. Members of all ages are welcome, and our practice nights are every Wednesday evening, throughout the year, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in Wyverstone Village Hall. Please do come along and join us – dress is casual, no special shoes are required, and all equipment is provided. Once you have learnt the game, you’ll be hooked! The survival of this local club depends on YOU!!For further details, contact our Secretary, Janice on 01449 781263 or visit our entry under Clubs & Associations on the local website -www.onesuffolk.co.uk/bactonandwyverstone

CHERNOBYL CHILDRENS LIFELINE MID SUFFOLK LINK

In November we held a Ginormous Jumble Sale which lasted approximately 3 hours with the majority of items selling between  20-50 pence and in that time we raised almost 900.00 - what a fantastic result! There were stalls inside and out of Creeting St Mary Jubilee Village Hall and people queuing long before opening time waiting to get in.

It has to be said that although the Sale was only for three hours there were many many more hours spent in preparation, collecting and storing the donations and sorting them into categories. A really big shout out to thank  Angela Osborn and Heather Dickinson who have been working so hard for months in advance to prepare for this event.

A big thank you also to those helpers who came along on the day and donated their time to help process all the sales, we could not have done this without you all.

We are now looking towards the summer group visit and would appeal to anyone interested in hosting to get in touch now as we have to start processing the invitation to the authorities in Belarus by January 2017. The children will be with us for four weeks from 2nd to 30th July. All that is needed is a minimum of a mattress to sleep on and a loving home with people who care, Financial circumstances are immaterial. Age is not a barrier - single parents considered, Families may or may not still have their own children at home. Hosts are able to follow their own occupation/interests as the children meet daily Mon-Fri 8.30 to 4.30 and helpers are on hand to collect or look after children at other times if needed.

We are also asking for donations of good quality second hand clothing for the summer group for age range 7 to 11 years. The children arrive with only the clothes they are wearing so both summer and winter clothes are appreciated.

For further information about our program or to donate clothes for the children please email or call me and I will be happy to provide further details

We are very aware that there are now more Charitable causes than ever all needing support. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supports us, you may think you only do a little but without you we could not survive.

Wishing you all very Merry Christmas and may 2017 bring you everything you wish for.

From Bacton Rectory....Another Christmas has passed – did you visit one of the local churches? Please let us know what you thought if you did – it always good to know how a service may have inspired you in some way. There is a link on the home page of our website to tell us about your experience.

And now, a new year has begun – with many resolutions made (and perhaps several already failed?). The beginning of a year gives many a sense of hope and expectation – that somehow things will get better.

This time last year we were awaiting a date – a date to be interviewed for the position of ministering here in the Bacton Benefice; it is amazing how the time has gone so quickly, and how much has changed in the past 6 months since we came here.

Something new for this year is a short service called ‘Afternoon Praise’ – it is at St Mary’s Bacton, and is at 4pm on the 3rd Sunday of the month. Perhaps you recall having to sit through boring sermons and stodgy hymns – well now there is another possibility; with this short gathering (around 30/40 minutes) where there will be plenty to do (and we will have tea / coffee / squash and cake afterwards).

There is a full page advert for Afternoon Praise in this month’s magazine; it has all the dates on. You can also download a poster of the dates from the web site (www.bactonbenefice.net).

Another new event each month (4th Sunday at St George’s Wyverstone) is ‘New Songs in Worship’; an informal time to learn some of the hymns we don’t know so well; there are plenty of new ones to learn, and perhaps even remind ourselves of some older ones we have forgotten were there!

What do you hope for this year? – our hope is that as a Christian presence in our villages, the churches have something to contribute.

With every blessing for the New Year

Val and David
