    After the revolution, the new government of the United States decided to create a federal tax on liquors and spirits. People started making their own to try to get around the taxes. At this point, a bad year of crops led to a good year for whiskey. The people that madfeeding their families. When Revenuers tried to collect the tax, they were attacked, even tarred and feathered.

    Whiskey makers took over Pittsburgh to start the Whiskey Rebellion. George Washington called for a gathering of militiamen. 13,000 troops came to fight the whiskey makers and ended up capturing their leaders, and ending the fight.

    This is when moonshiners started to really come alive. They could make the alcohol quick and it was more potent than whiskey and didnt take as long since it didnt have to age in the barrels.

    During the early 1900s, some states, like Kansas, began passing laws to ban alcohol sales and consumption, starting the Temperance Movement. This was the start of Prohibition. No legal alcohol was available at this time. The demand for moonshine skyrocketeddemands. They started to make sugar based and watered down product to increase their profits.

    Runners and bootleggers were the people that delivered the moonshine. They would soup up their vehicles so they could easily slip away from law enforcement trying to catch them. This lead to informal races between them to see who could go the fastest.
