Visits to exhibitions, museums and galleries, and retail spaces are very important throughout your studies.

Try to visit museums and galleries – there are great ways to engage with museums and galleries online via their websites, if you are unable to visit them in person.

These visits will form an important contextualisation for your practice.

It also makes for a great ‘conversation’ starter in Welcome Week with your peers.

Please purchase these books in advance:

– The Royal School of Needlework Book of Embroidery: A Guide to Essential Stitches, Techniques and Projects RSN series: Search Press (25 May 2018) ISBN-13: 978-1782216063)

This will be your essential ‘go to guide’ during the course.

We also recommend that you build up your awareness of practice within the creative arts sector through online and print journals.

BA (Hons) Hand Embroidery - Welcome Week_2021-22 PINCUSHION Please follow us on Social Media - @rsndegree / @royal-needlework

SUMMER PROJECT 2021

‘A POSTCARD FROM YOUR HOME…PINCUSHION’

As an introduction to developing your practice in hand embroidery we would like you to begin by producing a ‘postcard from your home’ as a PINCUSHION. All works will be exhibited at the RSN Degree apartments and on RSN social media during your autumn term Begin by drawing on location from your home.

Your postcard from home must SHOW the name of your home village / town / city / suburb and depict an image or series of images which you feel represents your home location. This could be a street/ village / town / cityscape. Take photographs to record potential sources of inspiration and use these to produce a series of paper design ideas using a range of experimental approaches

Use these to translate your design through experimental stitch and fabric applique – you can use any combination of materials and any media to create your pincushion. The pincushion can be in any shape or format.

Please ‘personally deliver’ your pincushion with your supporting drawings and design development on your first day at the RSN. We will ask each of you to present your

pincushion to us on the first day of term.
