The Fine Art Department at Sheffield Hallam University is one of the oldest art institutions in the UK, founded in 1843 as the Sheffield School of Art.

Today we are widely regarded as one of the UK's leading centres in Art research. Our staff secured a top rating of 5 in the latest national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) putting us in the top 8 universities for Fine Art in the UK.

A £30 million investment programme is helping us take our vision forward, moving all our activities into the centre of Sheffield’s Cultural Industries Quarter in the city centre. Work is underway on a state of the art new building with Wi-Fi technology and interactive galleries, which will provide a shop window for our innovation and creativity.

We are also investing in our facilities in two other city campus buildings. These will provide brand new art studios and workshops, extensive printmaking facilities, analogue & digital photo studio and darkrooms, video and audio editing suites with video, animation and performance areas. The vision will be completed when our current facilities for art, design and media relocate to the city campus in 2008.
